[Original Photographs]: Los Angeles Male Nudes

[Los Angeles, California. circa 1990-2008]. A compelling assemblage of about 275 snapshots of men, naked or scantily clad, displaying various states of excitement and attitudes, the bulk of which were taken in the mid-00's by an independent gay photographer based in Atwater Village, Los Angeles. Most are 4" x 6" color or black and white prints (about a quarter or more are black and white), including several smaller and a few larger sizes, and a few made as postcards. Many have the photographer's studio ink stamp or name and address stamp on the back: "E.M.A. Studio Calif. Artist," "Ed M. Andrews," or "E.M.A. Photography." All are near fine.An unambiguous and varied collection of portraits of mostly Hispanic or white men from Los Angeles, gay and straight (including gang members), made for private distribution and retained by the photographer, Ed Andrews. The images feature several candid snaps of nude men both outdoors and indoors, relaxed and recumbent, and occasionally erect. Also included are "art shots": images of young men entwined with antlers or wearing various costumes, usually with their members partially revealed or poking through a fold. Also included are close up shots of notable male anatomy: "Salvadorian -- 2 inch over hang -- most fine ever seen on a guy."Several dozen photographs are identified by Andrews with the occasional comment: "Ray, with hard on," "This, one of my best models -- Joey 1980's"; "Arab boy -- 24 yrs"; and "Ernie my Salvadorian friend -- 1 of my early art shots." A few have more fulsome comments written on the back: "Young gang member, 19 I had to service to get him to pose for me -- also had to pay him, but he is sort of cute, when he's not trying to push his dick in your face for sucking; Edwardo -- a real boxer in life -- just won his last fight a few weeks ago -- very hairy bush as you can see."The collection contains one autograph card with a mounted print from 2008, that reveals a little more information about Andrews: "Dear Ron, Enclosed are a few snaps when Andre and I were in Rio, last June (before I discovered I had cancer in July) -- The Rio guys are Hot! -- I'm enclosing a few other pictures of Hawaiians (Do not return Rio photos) on the Island. The one in a 'Hulu' skirt is a waiter, who 'models' on the side ... Pls. return the three at your convenience ..."An uncommonly frank collection of vernacular images, documenting the hidden lives of many gay and straight Hispanic immigrants and gay men in Atwater Village, before it became one of L.A.'s hippest neighborhoods. .

Domestic Science: Idioms and Pop-up Icons

Berkeley: Flying Fish Press, 1990. Paperback. Near Fine. Paperback. Number 62 of 150 copies. Numbered and signed by the author. A striking early production from Julie Chen's highly regarded Flying Fish Press. As with many of her early works, in which she collaborated with other artists, this piece was made with one of Julie's former teachers, Nance O'Banion. O'Banion taught papermaking at the California College of Arts and Crafts. Inspired by O'Banion's art, Julie asked her to collaborate on an artists' book with her. They spent a year working on this complex production, creating a sculptural work with five pop-ups and four foldout pages to explore the nature of their subjects. It is a two-sided book that can be read in circular fashion, or can be unfolded to reveal a display piece over eight feet long. Letterpress printed in 12 poiny Gill Sans on Fabriano's Rosapina paper. The illustrations were cut in linoleum by O'Banion. Sandy Tilcock produced the boxes. In near fine condition. ARTISTSBKS/111915.

Spongia ... adversus aspergines Hutteni. [colophon: Basel, Johann Froben, October 1523].  With: (2) ERASMUS, Desiderius. Catalogus novus omnium lucubrationu[m] ... cum censuris, & digestione singularum in suos tomos. Basel, Johann Froben, September 1524. The first work lacking the final leaf with the 1523 or October 1523 colophon and same woodcut device as the second work. 2 works in volume. 8vo (17.5 x 12 cm). Contemporary panel-stamped calf, each board with the same panel stamp (94/95 x 61 mm) in a double frame of quadruple fillets. The panel stamp is divided into an upper and lower half by a band of 4 rectangles containing three dogs and a wild boar, each half with grape vines winding around 8 smaller animals in 2 rows (the 16 of the 2 halves together including a wild boar, a squirrel, dogs, owls, other birds, wyverns -- or at least some sort of 2-legged dragon-like creatures -- and perhaps a deer and a hare). .

Ad 1: Adams E837; Van der Haeghen, Bibl. Erasmiana, p. 177; ad 2: Van der Haeghen, p. 27; VD16, E2124 (& E2123?); for the binding's panel stamp: Fogelmark, pp. 32-43 & plates VI-VII and XXX. Binding: a splendid and well preserved panel stamp appears in a very clear impression on each board of the present binding. It is the well known "de profundis panel", discussed at length in Staffan Fogelmark, Flemish and related panel-stamped bindings (New York 1990), pp. 32-43, illustrated with examples on plates VI-VII and XXX. He distinguishes 8 variants believed to represent different castings deriving from a single mould. The present version shows no nail marks and is very crisp and clear, suggesting it is an early impression of one of the earliest castings. Ad 1: October 1523 edition of Eramsus's Spongia. After a turbulent life the protestant humanist, poet, and fiery polemist Ulrich Hutten (1488-1523) fled to Switzerland in 1522 where he expected Erasmus to welcome him. In fact, Erasmus received him with an icy distance. Hutten reacted, as could be expected, with a defamatory pamphlet: his Expostulatio cum Erasmo, answered by Erasmus with his Spongia.Ad 2: Second edition, revised and expanded, of Erasmus's additions to and annotations on his own works. With owner's name and manuscript note. Ad 1 lacking the final leaf h4 with only the colophon and Froben's woodcut device. In good condition, with a few small marginal worm holes in the first 3 leaves and occasional marginal stains. Binding expertly restored along the extremities of the spin, ties lacking. The panel stamps themselves show a small stain on the front and some tiny abrasions on the back, but are otherwise fine..
