        VISHNU CREW STEWS VINDALOO ANEW

[New York: Purgatory Pie Press, 1990. Aluminum and paper construction, contained in 16mm film canister (24 cm diameter), with printed labels on and inside the upper lid. Fine. Copy #35 of an edition planned to consist of 74 copies. Signed by Bartalos, and by Dikko Faust and Esther K. Smith, principals of the press. The construction contains four accordion-fold booklets, letterpress printed on handmade, Khadi jute paper. Each is bound between aluminum covers, which are die-cut into the profile shapes of a cat, duck, crocodile and man's head. They're attached with nuts and bolts to a circular, revolving disk, hinged to a die-cut figure, in an allusion to multi-headed conceptions of Hindu deities. The whole, when folded, is then inserted into the felt-lined film canister, calculated as an ode to Bollywood. "I was in India on this trip with my college roommate, and I was really struck by the industrialization and the modernization of India, juxtaposed with the traditional aspects of it ... It's such an extrasensory experience being in India, and I wanted to express that in this book. ... Each of the heads tell a story and how the industrialization is changing India very, very fast" - the author/artist quoted in the context of an interview. The publisher's current website and catalogue indicate the work is "temporarily unavailable" at the publication price of $2500.

Blinds & Shutters (Signed by Francis Bacon et al.)

Genesis / Hedley 1990 - A limited edition of 5000 copies, of which this is copy 3504; all copies are signed by project originator Bill Wyman and a random selection from the 93 contributors (no two copies are the same), in this instance: Francis Bacon, Billy Al Bengston, Jo Bergman, Peter Blake, Adam Cooper, Terry Doran, Gerard Malanga, Earl McGrath, Colin Self and Dean Stockwell (11 in total). With the exception of the few copies signed by Andy Warhol, those signed by Bacon are the most sought-after of all. A beautiful (and mammoth) production, and perhaps the finest book on the 1960s ‘scene’. Tall, thick folio, featuring Michael Cooper's photographs (best known for shooting the album covers for the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and the Rolling Stones' Their Satanic Majesties Request – he was friends with both bands) and a variety of accounts and reminiscences of the period. Forewords by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards; introduction by Terry Southern. A Fine copy, bound in three-quarter black leather and yellow buckram, resembling a Kodak film container - the yellow buckram shows a little shelfwear to its extremities. Laid into a complete, and Very Good, black-and-yellow solander box, showing some rubbing to the edges and darkening to the yellow colouring; shutter window with an original photograph bound in. Superb. All orders are sent very carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and sturdy cardboard. Shipped free within the United Kingdom; a very large and heavy item that will incur additional shipping (to cost) outside the UK. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Goslarer Evangeliar. Die heiligen Texte der Christenheit

      - Coedition mit der Stadt Goslar. Graz 1990. Insgesamt 30 biblische Szenen, durchgehend Goldinitialen. Einband: Leder. Alle Blätter sind dem Original entsprechend randbeschnitten. Kommentarband: Graz 19 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Love Seeds": Ivory micro-engraving.

China Small case (14.5 cm, 5.6").. [ca. 1990?] Classical Chinese poetry in calligraphed format: This tiny rectangle of ivory (only about 4mm tall) is impossibly delicately etched with both the Chinese original and Fletcher's English translation of Wang Wei's Tang Dynasty-era poem "Xiang Si" (given here as "Love Seeds"). The xiang si bean (Abrus precatorius) is a Chinese symbol of love and longing; its small, shiny, red seeds were used as tokens of love, hence the reference in this poem: "The red bean grows in southern lands / With spring its slender tendrils twine / Gather for me some more, I pray / Of fond remembrance 'tis the sign." Additionally, both the Chinese and English texts are presented on a folded slip of paper, with additional commentary in Chinese characters only. The ivory is mounted within a black frame affixed to a small square of gold paper, on red velvet, and contained in a beautiful, eminently displayable case covered in olive-green silk with a woven Asian-inspired knotwork pattern in bronze and blue, decorated with a Chinese-printed label on the front cover. The case closes with a fabric loop and white-painted wooden toggle. Box as above, showing the faintest hint of rubbing to one corner, overall in excellent condition. Small compartment beneath presentation window seems to indicate a long slender item was at one point laid in, but it is difficult to say what that might have been.

We hope and pray your surgery will be 100%. You are in the best of hands. With all our love and admiration. Jerry Ford""In 1975, Pearl Bailey was named a Special Assistant to President Ford and a member of the United States Delegation to the United Nations. She frequently attended dinners at the Ford White House as a guest and entertainer. Bailey and her husband, jazz drummer Louis Bellson, had even spent a night at the Ford White House! She campaigned for President Ford in 1976.In 1988, President Ronald Reagan presented Pearl Bailey with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He announced: ""And the citation for Pearl Bailey Bellson: Pearl? As a girl, Pearl Bailey began singing in her father's church in Virginia and kept singing all the way to Broadway and into America's heart. Among the preeminent American entertainers of this century, she has dazzled audiences all over the world. She has also served the Nation as a Special Adviser to the United States Mission to the United Nations. And America loves Pearl Bailey, for her songs and for her soul."" Two months after Ford wrote this letter to Pearl Bailey, in July, she underwent the knee surgery - referred to by Ford in this letter - to replace her arthritic left knee with a metal and plastic joint. She left the hospital July 30th, walking with a cane but returned on August 17, 1990, complaining she was not feeling well. She died of coronary heart disease later that day."

        TYPED LETTER - Signed

Nipomo, California 1990 - TYPED LETTER personally signed "Jeana Yeager" in blue ink. This letter in on VOYAGER ENTERPRISES, INC letterhead, measures 8.5" X 11" and is dated November 20, 1990. The letter states "Dear Victor: / Well it's been a process of YES-NO-YES-N) on the flight suits. I guess / I'm not quiet (sic) ready to let go of any of the artifacts. I haven't yet / had a chance to go through the archives and determine what all is there / and what items will need to be held onto for the Voyager museum later to / come. I apologize that I have let so much time go by. I will at last, pass / the letterhead on to Dick to allow him a chance to make a comment about / the World flights. Again, I'll say, try again later. One of these days / I may let go. I hope the Holidays bring Good Tidings. / Sincerely, / "Jeana Yeager" / Jeana Yeager. Horses, not flying, were Jeana Yeager's first love. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Jeana moved to Garland when she was four years old. That year, Jeana's parents bought her the first of several horses. Jeana's father worked for Ling-Temco-Vought, which soon moved him and his family to Oxnard, California, where they stayed until 1963. Returning to Garland, Jeana picked up a new interest--track. Competing against other girls taught her how to win and lose--attributes which helped her when she began flying. Jeana's family moved to Commerce, Texas, when she was in the tenth grade. In 1977, she went to Santa Rosa, California, and worked as a draftsman and surveyor for a geothermal energy company. The next year she got a private pilot's license with the intention of learning to fly helicopters. However, before she could complete her lessons, the company she had contracted with failed. Still interested in flying, Jeana went to work for Robert Truax's Project Private Enterprise which sought to develop a reusable spacecraft. In 1980, Jeana's life changed when she met Dick Rutan at a Chino, California, airshow. A year later, the two of them decided to fly around the world, nonstop, unrefueled. They formed Voyager Aircraft, Incorporated, but were unable to find a commercial sponsor. Undeterred, they joined with Dick's brother, Burt Rutan, who designed, built, and sold home-built aircraft under the trade name Long EZ. Using Burt's aircraft, they set several aircraft speed and endurance records. In early 1982, Jeana set a new women's speed record for the 2,000-kilometer closed course. She broke the open-distance record of 2,427.1 statute miles in the fall of 1984 using the Vari Eze. In an attempt to set an endurance record, Jeana's aircraft lost part of its propeller--vibration shook the Long EZ so hard that the glass broke on the instruments. She skillfully landed the damaged aircraft on an interstate highway. Obtaining funds was a problem until Jeana initiated the Voyager Impressive People program which became the major source of money to build, test, and fly the aircraft. By mid-1986, Voyager was ready for the flight. She flew as copilot on a 116-hour flight and set a world's absolute distance record--the first time a woman had been listed in an absolute category. In December, the pair flew for over 9 days, setting yet another record, to complete the first nonstop, unrefueled flight around the world. Jeana's honors include the Collier Trophy (the first time ever awarded to a woman), a Presidential Citizens Medal, the Gold Medal from the Royal Aero Club of Great Britain, and many other prestigious honors. SOLZHENITSYN." An outspoken critic of the Soviet Union's totalitarian government, Solzhenitsyn was allowed to publish (in an edited form) "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" (1962) and was thereafter banned from publishing his work in his homeland. Solzhenitsyn wrote The Gulag Archipelago between 1958 and 1968 based upon his own experience as a prisoner in a gulag labor camp as well as on eyewitness testimony of others and on his own research. [Gulag is an acronym for Glavnoye Upravleniye ispravitelno-trudovyh Lagerey, or "Chief Administration of Corrective Labour Camps".] The work was smuggled out of Russia and was first published in Paris in 1973. It also circulated in the Soviet Union in an underground publication -- published by hand and passed from reader to reader to avoid Soviet censorship. Solzhenitsyn won the 1970 Nobel Prize in Literature "for the ethical force with which he has pursued the indispensable traditions of Russian literature". Solzhenitsyn did not attend the Award Ceremony for fear that he would not be allowed to return home from Sweden. His speech was smuggled out of the Soviet Union and read at the ceremony. Solzhenitsyn was expelled from the Soviet Union in 1974 and his citizenship was revoked. Portions of The Gulag Archipelago began to appear in "Novy Mir", a Russian Literary Magazine, in 1989 where approximately one third of the work was published over the course of three issues. Upon the restoration of Solzhenitsyn's Citizenship in 1990, the entire work was legally published in Solzhenitsyn's homeland for the first time (1990) in these three volumes, with Volume I containing parts 1–2, Volume II containing parts 3–4, and Volume III containing parts 5–7. All three Volumes are in Very Good condition with the third Volume having suffered some water damage to the the page block's bottom which has caused some wrinkling to the lower portion of the pages. The free endpapers and pastedowns have been renewed. A Very Good copy of the first legal publication of Nobelist Alexander Solzhenitsyn's magnum opus, SIGNED BY ALEXANDER SOLZHENITSYN. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE.

        Edwardian Tennis Match:Men's Doubles

Italy, 1990. Oil on copper. Marco Ceri lives in Northern Italy where he paints in oil on copper pictures in a very specific genre all his own. They are paintings of English people engaged in polo, golf or tennis during the Edwardian era. A great deal of research provided a high degree of accuracy to every aspect of these scenes including of course the attire and sports equipment, but even the postures and demeanors of the participants. The accuracy of the elements however does not intrude on the overall delight expressed in these tableaux. The artist keeps a low profile, enjoying his virtual anonymity. He considers himself a craftsman, who by limiting his sphere of activity, brings that craft closer and closer to perfection.

Germany and the Second World War: Volume 1. The Build-up of German Aggression: Vol 1. A fine first edition (thus).

Clarendon Press 1990 - This is a fine, first English printing of this hugely important and impossibly difficult work to find. Although listed as an American publication, the copies issued in the UK (as this one was) were printed in Essex. The book is in quite magnificent condition and is without fault or blemish with the exception of a few very slight, almost imperceptible, toning spots to the top edge of the page block. Otherwise, the page block is white, tight and square. The navy blue boards are pristine as is the gilt lettering to the spine. The front end papers present a double page map showing the geographic changes to Europe between 1935 and 1939. The rear end papers present a map showing German Political and Economic Influence at the Outbreak of The Second World War. The unclipped dust wrapper is also fine; bright, complete and unmarked. The same dust wrapper was used for both the USA and British editions and thus shows no price. It is now protected by an acid free, removable archival cover. The book presents as new and unread. Generally regarded as one of the most authoritative and accurate historical works on the Second World War, the book was written by four eminent German historians (including Deist and Volkmann) and edited by the German Research Institute for Military History. This is Volume 1 of what was intended to be a ten volume series but consisted eventually of thirteen volumes. The preparation of this series has taken over thirty years and all volumes have not yet been translated. Volume 1 examines the systematic preparation for War by Germany from the outset of Nazi rule, through re-armament and the Nazification of German society at all levels, to the outbreak of the Second World War. As with most publications on the Second World War, authored by Germans, it lays the claim that the vast majority of the German people did not support Adolf Hitler and were opposed to the War. Many learned American historians paint a quite different picture. However, what cannot be denied is that this is arguably the most intensively researched and documented work on the early stages of German aggression. It has been described as a work of “unparalleled scope and authority”. Very few of these original books were purchased privately; most went to libraries and academic institutions. Copies of the first printing that are occasionally presented for sale are invariably ex library copies. This copy is from an estate that contained quite the most comprehensive library of books on the Second World War that could be imagined. It consisted of over 400 volumes, carefully shelved. We doubt this book has been opened. This is an opportunity to obtain a monumentally rare book that will grace any library or collection of historical works on the Second World War, indeed the 20th century. The images you see are high resolution scans and photographs of the actual book. The book will be dispatched via the Royal Mail in protective packaging. We do not charge postage to buyers within the UK. Those from outside the UK are asked to contact us before purchasing. We offer a 7 day no quibble full refund if the item is not as described and shown. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The condition of this piece has been graded as A: Mint. Here is some supplemental information about the Serigraph: This image is part of the series The Hartley Elegies. This piece is signed, numbered, titled, and dated in pencil by Robert Indiana. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
