Two typed letters signed to Gavin Young.

8vo., 2 single sheets of Greene's La Residence des Fleurs headed paper. Both letters folded once otherwise on very good condition. Greene's first letter dated May 14th is a reply to a letter Gavin Young had sent to him on April 21 (a photopcopy of Young's letter is supplied). Young's letter reminds Greene that they had met for an interview a few years earlier (the interview was published in the Observer in March 1978, reprinted in Worlds Apart , 1987). Young goes on to explain that he is planning to write a book about Joseph Conrad and his travels and asks to meet Greene to have "a quiet gentle chat about places and people which I believe you are interested in - and by which I am quite enthralled." Greene offers a warm reply "Many thanks for your letter. Your journeys sound of great interest and I shall look forward to your book. I think the only parts where our paths crossed are Bankok and Singapore. I would like to hear you speak of it all over a drink, but alas my drink would be orange juice, as I am struggling with anaemia". The second letter comes after Young and Greene had met. "It was a great pleasure for me too to see you again. I never thanked you properly for all those books you left with me...I have of course read yours which I enjoyed thoroughly and I'm sure was the best of the bunch. Djuna Barnes strikes a note in my memory and I shall read he next when I get back to Antibes... I'm afraid I would have been a bad companion on your trip round the world. I haven't got sufficient patience!" Sold with paperback copies of Gavin Young's World's Apart which includes on pp. 290 - 294 Young's article Pink Gin and Panama recording Greene and Young's first interview, and also In Search of Conrad, the book about which he and Greene met to have "a quiet, gentle chat".

Poems of W. B. Yeats. Selected and Introduced by Helen Vendler & with Six Etchings by Richard Diebenkorn.

      - San Francisco: Arion Press, 1990. 4to, xxv, 171, (1, colophon)pp. With six full-page etchings. Original quarter red morocco & dark green cloth, matching cloth & board slipcase. As new. Limited to 400 numbered copies signed by Diebenkorn, this copy complete with the prospectus and the extra pamphlet by Vendler "Yeats's Paradises". A beautifully designed and printed version of Yeats, perhaps the best of all and certainly the finest illustrated edition, with haunting etchings by the world-famous artist Diebenkorn. "In one of his last ambitious print series, done in 1990, he represented variations on the theme of a coat on a hanger. The late etchings, meant to illustrate a luxury edition book of poems by W.B. Yeats published by San Francisco's Arion Press, constitute a kind of valedictory gesture." (Diebenkorn Foundation). One of the scarcest of the Arion Press books, and surely one of the best.         Mission To Mars.

Grove Weidenfeld, New York 1990 - First edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by the author on the half title page to Buzz and Lois Aldrin, "For Buzz and Lois with all good wishes- Mike Collins Dec. '90." An exceptional association, linking these two members of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with some toning to the spine. Mission to Mars is a well-written account of Michael Collins' blueprint for a 22-month mission to Mars that would depart Earth in June 2004. Collins, who piloted the Apollo moon mission in 1969, envisions the deployment of two mother ships (one for backup), plus two landing craft, and speculates on the possibility of a joint Soviet-U.S. mission, or a multinational cooperative effort. Despite an estimated pricetag of $200 billion for his scenario, "we'd still be spending more on cigarettes if the cost is spread over 15 years," he calculates. Going to Mars, in his opinion, "would be the salvation" of NASA, giving the agency a unifying vision and sense of purpose, while providing alleged spiritual benefits to the populace.         Reconstructed History

New York: Thea Westreich & Galerie Gisela Capitain. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. LIMITED FIRST EDITION, SIGNED AND NUMBERED BY KELLEY (No. 94 of 250). "Such childish resentment is the cause of the defacements presented here. The inability to accept their lower position in the order of things provokes these 'artists' to drag back to the surface garbage long buried-to sully, vandalize, and render inoperable our pictures of health. Not that such a tactic is always bad." -- Mike Kelly, from Reconstructed History Composed of graffitied images from U.S. history textbooks done and reproduced by Kelley, Reconstructed History, as elucidated in Kelley's introduction, explores tarnishing the sacred and how we might reconstruct a vision of our nation's past through its vandalization. Editor John C. Welchman explains, "The images are not 'found' but made. The result is an elaborate hoax, one of the more vivid of Kelley's many efforts to perform, write, and represent through fictitious adopted personae." New York: Thea Westreich & Galerie Gisela Capitain, 1990. Octavo (12 1/2" x 9 1/2"), intricately decorated beige boards, illustrated vinyl dust jacket; containing 61 plates. Number 94 of an issued 250. RARE.

Cfr. Castleman ?A century of artists books?, p. 52: ?Another American, Sol LeWitt, devised an art from simple sets of instructions, so that large walls could be covered with drawings executed by others, simply following his orders. He, too, was interested in sets, this time sets of lines of certain lenghts, colors, and directions. Like Ruscha, he produced photographic booklets with sets of things, but his systematic examination of how the simplest form, a straight line, could be manipulated into complexity by multiplication, generated his most notable books?. ?Sol LeWitt (1928 - 2007), scultore statunitense. Ben conservato.

        Diebold Schillings Spiezer Bilderchronik.

Luzern, Faksimile Verlag 1990. - Folio. 808 S. (Faksimile) u. XI, 599 S. (Kommentarbd.). Mit 344 meist ganzs., originalgetreu reproduzierten Bildern. Weisser, blindgepr. I. 16 der Burgerbibiliothek Bern. - Tadellos sauberes Exemplar. Lang de

        Le Desert de Retz

1990. [LE ROUGE, George Louis]. Le Désert de Retz: Le Jardin Pittoresque de Monsieur de Monville; A Late Eighteenth-Century French Folly Garden. By Diana Ketcham. Preface by Olivier Choppin de Janvry. Text in English and French. 120 pp. Illustrated with historical views of the park, a facsimile of 26 engravings by Le Rouge issued in 1785, and 32 new photographs of the garden sites by Michael Kenna. Oblong folio, 255 x 405 mm, bound in original blue cloth. San Francisco: The Arion Press, 1990. |~||~||~||~||~| The de Monville estate, known as the Désert de Retz, was constructed as a gigantic broken column, an eighteenth-century fantasy meant to reveal the essence of architecture in ruins. This "magic realm" served to influence Thomas Jefferson, King Gustavus of Sweden, Marie Antoinette, and later, the Surrealists. This handsomely printed book presents Monsieur de Monville's fanciful landscape garden and its architectural monuments in a pleasing deluxe format. The new work contains reproductions of the original Le Rouge engravings of the estate, plus photographs which show the current status of the buildings and grounds. Limited Edition of 400 copies printed in Cochin type on Lustor dull paper. As new.

        A Fragile Walk.

Camberwell, London 1990 - Number 2 of only 5 copies printed. A tribute to rampant imagination and a belief in the beauty of textures, both natural and man-made. The entire book is printed on coarse, thick handmade papers in several colors. Illustrations are bold, colorful, childishly simple, childishly devious. Carvings in wood, lead, copper and fibre attach themselves throughout in a multi-media romp. The binding consists of a course linen spine with leather strapping joining two large slabs of stained pine on which nail heads, industrial staples and sculpting in various metals recall in a parody the bindings in precious metals and stones of medieval manuscripts. Les Bicknell has worked at Camberwell, "the only college in the UK providing specialist postgraduate study in Book Arts." His work is included in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, The Rijksmuseum, and MOMA. Indeed, one copy of this title is in the Victoria and Albert Museum. A fine copy.; Quarto [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
