(at the turn of the 20th century) extensive work was carried out by ichneumonologists … All of the research done in this period has been recorded in Schmiedeknecht's (1902-1936) multivolume work, Opuscula ichneumonologica. In the division of the subfamily Tryphoninae, Schmiedeknecht followed Holmgren's system but treated the tribe Tryphonini within the limits set by Thomson … He included 13 genera comprising some 120 species of Palearctic (predominantly European) fauna" (Kasparyan).         Black Book

The only book created by American Post-conceptual artist Christopher Wool from his most important series of letter paintings. New York : Thea Westreich and Cologne : Gisella Capitain, 1989. Elephant folio (585 mm tall), black papered boards, title page, 17 screenprints, colophon. Limited to 350 copies signed and numbered by the artist (a further 8 artist's proofs also issued). A fine copy. Born in Boston in 1955, Christopher Wool is widely considered to be the most influential Post-conceptual visual artist of the twentieth century. In the 1980s Wool began composing his first word-based series of paintings, drawing inspiration from the stencilled labels painted on the sides of military vehicles, along with the urban graffiti found across New York. 'In the 1980s, Christopher Wool was doing a Neo-Pop sort of painting using commercial rollers to apply decorative patterns to white panels. One day he saw a new white truck violated by the spray-painted words "sex" and "luv." Mr. Wool made his own painting using those words and went on to make paintings with big, black stenciled letters saying things like "Run Dog Run" or "Sell the House, Sell the Car, Sell the Kids." The paintings captured the scary, euphoric mood of a high-flying period not unlike our own' (Ken Johnson, 'Art in Review: Christopher Wool', The New York Times, March 17, 2000). In Black Book, the artist's only book created from his most important series, Wool fills each page with a staccato-like series of stencilled black letters, forming words such as TERRORIST; PERSUADER; EXTREMIST; CELEBRITY. The letter forms are almost abstract, with words broken arbitrarily into groups of three letters equally spaced across three lines. As a sequence they become the syllables in an unremitting mantra. Wool formalises the rawness and immediacy of street graffiti and presents an assault of word-images which, through their minimalism, are at the same time benign and unsettling. Wool's letter art from the late 1980s, epitomised in Black Book, is some of the most sought after in the contemporary art world. These works are post-pop icons of the ongoing deconstruction of our sense of security, identity and familiar space. Retrospectives of the work of Christopher Wool have been held at the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago and numerous other major institutions.

The Beate Klarsfeld Foundation, New York. 1989. Paperback. First edition. Original illustrated stiff wrappers, Square 8vo, 111 pages. Includes 125 drawings and paintings, many in color. “L'oeil du témoin. The eyes of a witness. ” Olère's “work has exceptional documentary value: there are no photos of what happened in the gas chambers and crematoria, and Olère was the only artist to have worked as a member of the Sonderkommando and survived. He was also the first witness to draw plans and cross-sections to explain how the crematoria worked…..David Olère (1902 - 1985) was a Polish-born French painter and sculptor best known for his explicit drawings and paintings based on his experiences as a Jewish Sonderkommando inmate at Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II…. On February 20, 1943, Olère was arrested by French police during a round up of Jews in Seine-et-Oise and placed in Drancy internment camp. On March 2, 1943, he was one of approximately 1, 000 Jews deported from Drancy to Auschwitz. From this transport, Olere was one of 119 people selected for work; the rest were gassed shortly after arrival. He was registered as prisoner 106144 and assigned to the Sonderkommando at Birkenau, the unit of prisoners forced to empty gas chambers and burn the bodies, firstly working in Bunker 2 and later in Crematorium III. In addition to these duties, he was also forced to work as an illustrator, writing and decorating letters for the SS…. Olère began to draw at Auschwitz during the last days of the camp, when the SS became less attentive….. Olère felt compelled to capture Auschwitz artistically to illustrate the fate of all those that did not survive. He sometimes depicts himself in his paintings as a ghostly witnessing face in the background. He exhibited his work at the State Museum of Les Invalides and the Grand Palais in Paris, at the Jewish Museum in New York City, at the Berkeley Museum, and in Chicago. He retired from being an artist in 1962, and died in 1985.” (Wikipedia 2014) Very Good+ Condition. An outstanding copy of a very important book, seldom seen for sale. (holo2-122-36A) xx .

[Celosia cristata].[Lekzigt near Dordrecht?, 1780?]. Watercolour on a half sheet of laid paper (42.5 x 27.5 cm), mounted on wove paper. In a passepartout.

Cf. Christie's, Dutch, Flemish and German drawings (Amsterdam, 21-11-1989), 126-129; for Gevers: Engel, Alphabetical list of Dutch zoological cabinets and menageries, pp. 93-95. Attractive watercolour drawing of a cockscomb (Celosia cristata), a plant with bright ornamental flowers native to the Asiatic tropics, with a diverse herbal use, cultivated in European gardens as early as 1570. The drawing is not signed, but can be easily attributed to the Dutch flower painter Jan Jansz. van der Vinne (1734-1805), one of the members of a family of notable artists. The watercolour has a 19th-century(?) inscription in pencil on the back: "Op Lekzigt in den Jare 1780 gewasschen" (Grown on Lekzigt in the year 1780), indicating that the plant illustrated was grown in 1780 in the gardens of Lekzigt, a country house near Dordrecht, likely owned by Aarnout Gevers (1714-1788), alderman of Rotterdam, as his wife Margaretha Maria Brouwer died there in 1784. The old index number ("3.11.65 Gevers") also indicates it belonged to a member of the Dutch Patrician family Gevers, all known collectors. Dozens of botanical drawings by the Van der Vinne family ended up at a Christies auction in 1989, but it didn't include our present drawing. This sale did include four other watercolours by Jan Jansz. van der Vinne, each with a Gevers reference number very close to the present and three with the same C & I Honig countermark.A 5 cm area of the paper's surface has been scraped away and part of one leaf of the plant has been painted over it. Further in very good condition.

20 Poemas de Amor y 1 Cancion Desesperada

Poestenkill, NY: Kaldewey Press, 1989. Keever, Kim. Oblong folio. 106pp. One of twenty deluxe copies printed on papier de Chine and bound in flexible blue textured leather by Christian Zwang. With twenty-five linoleum cuts in several colors by Kim Keever. Signed by the artist. Keever's linocuts draw directly from the theme of love, with imagery of women and men and handwritten text. These are displayed to greatest effect in this deluxe edition, as the translucent Chinese paper allows the text and images to show through. Designed and printed by Gunnar Kaldewey, who combines the traditional with the experimental, bringing together the work of an early twentieth-century poet with the techniques and ideas of the late twentieth-century artist. In this work, Kaldewey utilizes an inventive index format in which the pages for each poem are one inch wider than the poem before, allowing for each section to be accessed easily and directly. The title page, as it were, is printed letter by letter across these tabs. Housed in a grey chemise and slipcase. Very fine. (Edition Kaldewey 15).

First English language edition. Illustrated with thirty-four original lithographs and two vignettes by Max Ernst. The English translation, prepared in 1972 by Nicolette Bernard, Peter Leslie and George Kimball, was not actually printed until 1989 (also at Atelier Chave).         Proboscidea louisianica].[Netherlands, 2nd half of the 18th-century]. Watercolour on laid paper (40.5 x 27 cm) of a flowering Proboscidea louisianica, with fruit and a horned seedpod on the ground. In passepartout (55 x 40 cm).

      - For Schouman: De Bray, The art of the botanical illustration (1989), p. 48; Nagler XVII, pp. 532-534; Thieme & Becker XXX, p. 270. Beautiful watercolour drawing of a Proboscidea louisianica by the notable and versatile Dutch artist Aert Schouman (1710-1792). "He was best known for his ornithological studies rather than for his botanical work, but the latter are so pleasing, with the plants in their pale, scenic settings that do not distract the eye"(De Bray). This species, native to Mexico and the southern United States, is commonly known under a variety of names, including devil's claw and ram's horn. It's named after its claw-shaped seed pods, that appear as its fruit dries and the flesh falls away, leaving a hard beak that splits into two horns. Both the fruit and the seedpod are depicted.Like most of Schouman's botanical drawings, the present is unsigned as it was probably part of the artist's private collection of study drawings auctioned after his death in The Hague on 10/11 December 1792. We like to thank the Schouman expert Charles Dumas for his information and confirmation of the attribution. In very good condition, with a small faint waterstain on top and a couple specks.

Nohow On. With Etchings by Robert Ryman.

The Limited Editions Club, Ohne Ort [New York] 1989 - 2 Blatt, 128 S., 1 Blatt. This edition consists of five hundred and fifty copies. Typset in English Monotype Bodoni at Golgonooza Letterfoundry with new descending characters from punches cut by Daniel Carr. The display type is Bauer Bodoni. The text was printed at The Shagbark Press on a paper made at Cartiere Enrico Magnani. The etchings were printed on arches at Wingate Studio and Renaissance Press. The design is by Benjamin Shiff. Copy number 459." "Robert Ryman brings to this edition one of the most singular explorations in the visual arts. Staying within his strict field of expression he has focused on a necessary and inevitable element of modernism. His process is one of distillation and the miracle of these works is the essence of the moment captured in context with Beckett's prose. The images are firmly anchored in Beckett's text; to discover them is a breathtaking experience the committed reader will appreciate. The discovery of something profound in seeming nothingness, a metaphysical exploration of consciousness. The pages of this book are both intimate and monumental. They are extremely clean typographically so as not to interfere with the text, while the typeface, leading, and margins combine to give space and breath within a small format" (From the enclosed sheet of The Limited Editions Club). Der Leinenkasten am Rücken minimal aufgehellt, sonst schönes, nahezu neuwertiges Exemplar in einwandfreiem Zustand. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
