Lovejoy. Excerpts from a Memoir. A Commentary and Etchings by Bruce Chandler with an Epilogue by Anthony Lewis

Boston: Heron Press, 1989. Folio. 33pp., unbound, as issued. Of an edition of 115 copies, this is one of fifteen printed on handmade paper, with an extra etching laid-in, and signed by Chandler and Lewis. Illustrated with eight etchings by Chandler, one of which is a double-page fold-out. Elijah Parish Lovejoy was an Abolitionist minister and printer from Albion, Maine who, in the words of John Quincy Adams, was "the first American Martyr to the Freedom of the Press & the Freedom of the Slave." Chandler's handsome book draws from the memoir written by Lovejoy's brothers after his murder at the hands of a mob in Illinois in 1837. Bruce Chandler has been printing at the Heron Press for the past twenty years. His work has been exhibited throughout the Northeast, and is in collections as far afield as the British Museum and the Bodleian Library. This book is not only beautiful but, as Lewis' epilogue points out, has great significance in our time. Fine in a blue cloth chemise with matching morocco-backed blue clamshell box.

Archive for "Dean R. Koontz in the Fictional Melting Pot" in Writer's Digest (Signed)

1989. Original typescript.. All items fine.. Koontz was interviewed by Stanley Wiater for Writer's Digest magazine; the result was published in the November, 1989 issue. Included here are two typescript (computer printout) drafts of the interview: the first draft (2 copies) as prepared by Wiater, and the second draft, typed and edited by Koontz. With the second draft is an autograph letter signed by Koontz, saying "More Koontz blatherings have raised the page count from 12 to 16. I think this should satisfy Bill. If not, I'm on Mars for the next six months." Also included is an autograph letter signed transmitting four author photos (not included) for Writer's Digest to choose from and a typed letter signed transmitting two versions of the same page of text from Koontz's A Bad Place for use illustrating the author's writing process in the article. The two pages of text, reproducing the author's holograph corrections, are included. Lastly, there is a photocopy of the article as it was published, which differs somewhat from the two drafts included here. One (folded) mailing envelope included. All items are fine. Koontz autograph material is uncommon, and this small archive provides a glimpse of the writer at work, commenting on his own work, and carefully revising it and clarifying it -- including the interview text -- prior to publication.

        Inside World

New York: Thea Westreich, 1989. Fine in gilt-stamped red boards, matching red slipcase; original artwork also fine.. Deluxe Edition. Quarto in slipcase. Number 4 of 250 numbered copies; SIGNED by Prince and dated 1989. With a SIGNED handwritten joke laid in as issued: "What a kid I was. / I remember practicing / the violin in front of / a roaring fire. My / old man walked in. He / was furious. We / didn't have a fireplace." An early artists' book by Richard Prince, mostly full-bleed color images of cowboys, bikers, girlfriends, and jokes, with several pages of birdtalk scattered in. Sometimes overlooked is Prince's role as co-curator of the exhibition at Kent Gallery for which this book was published. In this capacity, Prince seamlessly weaves the work of Man Ray, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol into his own narrative. So successful is this appropriation that most casual readers never notice the other collaborators.

        Miles. The Autobiography

New York: Simon and Schuster,, 1989. With Quincy Troupe. Octavo. Original brown quarter cloth, brown boards, titles to spine gilt, tan endpapers. With the dust jacket. Minor fading of ends of spine. An excellent copy in the price-clipped jacket with a small mark on the lower panel. Fifth printing, this copy signed by Miles on the front free endpaper. Exceptionally uncommon signed, we have only encountered one other signed copy, a scarcity which would be explained by the circumstances attending the book's publication. Quincy Troupe, Miles's co-author recounts in his memoir, Miles and Me, that shortly before publication in late September 1989, Miles, who guarded his privacy ferociously, had told Troupe that he would not do a "book tour to support our book." Troupe "told the editors at Simon and Schuster that he [Davis] wouldn't tour or give talks or sign books … they didn't believe me and when he refused to do it, bad feelings developed between Miles and the company." Coupled with this, the book was published just two years before Miles's death, during which time he endured chronic ill-health; he was a diabetic and suffered from a mysterious flu-like virus, ascribed by some biographers to AIDS - which Miles vehemently denied - before succumbing to heart failure due to pneumonia and complications from the two strokes on Sept. 28 1991. A lovely copy of this important and rarely signed autobiography.

Chicago, IL: Stephen Daiter Gallery, 1989. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Chicago, IL: Stephen Daiter Gallery, 1989. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 1 pages. Rare Luis Gonzalez Palma collectible item. A signed and framed poster commemorating the artist/photographer's debut exhibition in the United States. Published in a very small and limited print run of 500 copies only. Poster size is 18 X 24 inches. Framed size is slightly larger. The item weighs 7 pounds. Printed on very thick coated stock paper in Chicago, Illinois to absolutely the highest standards. Presents "La Luna, 1989" magnificently framed in authentic black-varnished wood and plexiglass by Creativo, Luis Gonzalez Palma's US framer. Published on the occasion of the artist/photographer's inaugural exhibition in the United States held at The Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago in 1989. There is no accompanying exhibition catalog. The poster features one of Luis Gonzalez Palma's most iconic images and earliest masterpieces, "La Luna, 1989", which shows a woman (whose breasts are exposed, in all her naked vulnerability) with a carved crescent-moon tied around her neck virtually covering her face. The poetic and erotic associations of the Moon with Woman are universal. As beautiful as the image is, Gonzalez Palma is also alluding to its more oppressive side in the larger context of Latin-American "macho" culture, where women, while outnumbering men, continue to be treated as though they were a minority, and remain subject to the obsolete standards of morality that a male-dominated society seeks to perpetuate. Luis Gonzalez Palma was discovered by Stephen Daiter and given his debut one-man American show in 1989, a courageous decision because the artist was still largely unknown in this country. He is now regarded as one of the most brilliant living Latin-American artist/photographers, whose work is widely represented and well-known throughout the world. The Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez used another image, "La Rosa", for the cover of his great novel, "Of Love and Other Demons". "Gonzalez Palma's images unfold with increasing significance, resulting in an underlying sense of tension and foreboding that is only slightly eased by their sheer loveliness" (A. D. Miller). A genuine collectible, not just memorabilia, this is a "must-have" item for Luis Gonzalez Palma collectors. This copy of the Souvenir Poster is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen in front by Luis Gonzalez Palma. This Souvenir Poster was never sold commercially and is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only signed and framed copy available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. The other signed (but not framed) copy is also available from us. Its value will not only keep but keep going up. A rare signed copy thus. One of the finest living Latin-American artist/photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER LUIS GONZALEZ PALMA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

A Time to Kill (Association Copy)

New York: Wynwood Press, 1989. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. Inscribed by the author: "To Benjamin Ballard - Thanks for the friendship. I wish the best in your pursuit of a literary career. If I can help, give me a call. Best Wishes - John Grisham 6-30-89." Benjamin Ballard is the son of Grisham's 9th grade English teacher (Brenda Ballard) and County Attorney, Bill Ballard, who became friends with Grisham at the beginning of his literary career. In fact, Bill Ballard was the second person, after Grisham's wife, to see the manuscript for the novel and tossed around ideas for the title with Grisham. Wynwood published 5,000 copies of the book (but effectively had no marketing budget for the book); Grisham purchased 1,000 copies himself to sell. The Ballards hosted the first official book signing event for Grisham at their home on June 30, 1989. Teenage Benjamin was responsible for carting the boxes of books over to the house from Grisham's office for the signing, but recalls that very few people purchased copies. In fact, only 44 copies were sold that evening. A wonderful association copy of the book that launched the most successful legal fiction career in several generations. With an invitation card to the signing event and a letter of provenance from Benjamin Ballard. & & Book Near Fine, likely read once and just a bit rubbed on the spine. In a Near Fine dust jacket with a few gentle bends, but no chips, clips or tears. Near Fine in Near Fine. dust jacket.
