Atlas Shrugged (2 volume set in custom slipcase)

Norwalk, Connecticut: The Easton Press. Near Fine in New dust jacket. 1989. Leather. Author's incomparable novel in a leatherbound two volume set, in custom slipcase. With color frontis illustrations in each volume, and interior black & white line drawings by Frank Mayo. Each volume is bound in rich blue leather with four raised bands on their spines and elaborate repeating decorations in gilt on covers and spines; and with gilt spine titling. With pale orange silk moire endpapers and matching satin bookmark ribbon. All edges in gilt. Leaves of high-quality non-acidic papers. Slipcase specially designed and built for this set by G'Jim of Wyoming Mercantile and covered in Brazilian-made Crepaldi marbled paper of a blue and brown peacock design. --- The volumes are in excellent condition, lacking any sort of writing, bookplates or markings. A few of the leaves have very shallow creases and a hint of crumpling, likely due to exposure to humidity. Both books have faint scratches to the gilding on their fore-edges. (Any reference to dust jacket is meant to describe the slipcase.) --- First published in 1957 by Random House, this epic work has never lost its popularity and new editions still sell very well. Ayn Rand (1905-1982) had strong beliefs, rooted in reason and rationality. Her beliefs have been described as 'Objectivist'; adherents of which stress the worth and power of the individual. Many of the author's core beliefs are reflected in 'Atlas Shrugged'.; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 1168 pages .

On the Art of Painting. Interpreted by Zahra Partovi. With 26 line etchings by Annette Senneby

New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Company. 1989. One of 50 copies only, each on Rives Johannot and Dieu Donne handmade paper, signed by both Partovi and Senneby on the colophon. Page size: 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. Illustrated by the noted Swedish sculptor, Annette Senneby, with a continuous etched line that extends across the box housing the book, across the covers and endpapers and on each page of text, in white on the mottled endpapers lining the box and the endpapers of the book, in charcoal gray on the white text. The line crosses the pages in various directions - now going diagonally up, now down. The strong etched line can be seen through the pages forming a ghostly pattern on the viewed page. This mirrors Rumi's parable of the painting contest between the ancient Greeks and Chinese. The text is repeated in Persian calligraphy after the English text, divided by a rust-colored paper insert, but the etched line continues. The text is printed in gray ink by Daniel Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress. The etchings were accomplished by Marjorie Van Dyke and M'Lis Bartlett at The Printmaking Workshop. The Persian calligraphy is by Zahra Partovi. Bound by Zahra Partovi: black silk with blind etched line on both covers, rust-colored gray endpapers with white etched line, sewn with Persian signature on the diagonal as are the covers, forming a trapezoid. Housed in a black linen trapezoid box with a steel panel set into both covers covering the entire surface but for a small border. The steel panels are etched with a continuous line. The book has a sculptural feel about it; yet it is still the printed work in book form that can be held and read. Rumi's parable is set off by the simplicity of the book's conception and design.
See an Image.
Harold Prince and the American Musical Theatre (First Edition, inscribed by Prince to his producer Robert Fryer)

London: Cambridge University Press, 1989. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by Harold Prince on the title page to his longtime producer Robert Fryer: "For Bobby Fryer / Employer, collaborator, lasting friend [underlined] / w/Love Always / Hal Prince / 5/13/89." Prince produced many of the best-known Broadway musical productions of the past half-century, including "Cabaret" (1966), "Company" (1970), "A Little Night Music" (1973), and "Sweeney Todd" (1979). He also directed two of Andrew Llloyd Webber's best-known musicals, "Evita" and "The Phantom of the Opera." Over time he has garnered twenty-one Tony Awards, more than any other individual, including eight for directing, eight for producing, and three special awards. Robert Fryer staged some of Broadway's most popular productions from the 1950s to the 1980s, starting in 1951 as a co-producer, with George Abbott, for "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn." He went on to produce such hits as "Wonderful Town" (1958), "Sweet Charity" (1966), "Chicago" (1975), and "Merrily We Roll Along" (1981). His Broadway shows won a total of 37 Tony Awards. Fryer also produced a number of well-known films, including "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" (1969), "The Boys from Brazil" (1978), and "The Shining" (1980). Also laid in is an card from the Beverly Hills Hotel, inscribed (presumably to Fryer also): "Sun AM / Last night was special! / Love, H." With forewords by Prince and Stephen Sondheim. Fine and unread in a Fine dust jacket. A tremendous association between two of the most important figures in twentieth-century American theatre.

The Georgics [Signed]; Les Georgiques [Signee]

London: John Calder, 1989. First English language edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. A Fine copy of the first UK edition, first printing, in a Fine dust jacket, SIGNED BY CLAUDE SIMON on the front free endpaper; Claude Simon's most important work (rivaled only by "The Flanders Road" - 1961), a novel about the horror, waste, and stupidity of war. Claude Simon who "in his novel combines the poet's and the painter's creativeness with a deepened awareness of time in the depiction of the human condition" won the 1985 Nobel Prize in Literature. In both the Press Release announcing the Award, and in the Presentation Speech delivered by Professor Lars Gyllensten of the Swedish Academy, named The Georgics as being Simon's "most important work", stating as follows: "Simon's experiences from the Spanish Civil War were similar, depicted in Le Palace and his latest and most important novel, Les Georgiques, 1981. For all the sympathies which he and others might have for those faithful to the government who fought against the fascists, it soon turned out that these government champions for their part, could by no means follow any regular and intelligently planned strategies and operations. On the contrary, the fighters were split into factions and mutual strife, giving way to meaningless and absurd foolhardiness, obstructions and hazardous enterprises. In Les Georgiques George Orwell appears, thinly disguised. Simon's picture of the Spanish Civil War and of the intellectual idealists who like Orwell, and his English sympathizers, wanted to find an ideologically clear reason in the fight against oppression, shapes itself into a version, at once grotesque and tragic, compassionate and ironic, of war's reality and of man's inability to guide his fate and correct his conditions. La Route des Flandres and Les Georgiques are richly decorated compositions which, with sensuous perspicacity and linguistic invocation, conjure up an extremely complicated pattern of personal memories and family traditions, of experiences during modern war and of equivalents from bygone ages, to be exact the Napoleonic era." Copies of this work in the first French edition are surprisingly uncommon to the market. Copies of the first edition in English translation are even more uncommon, and signed copies in English translation are hen's teeth. A Fine copy, SIGNED BY CLAUDE SIMON. RARE.

(WILLIAMS, CHRISTOPHER). Williams, Christopher. CHRISTOPHER WILLIAMS: ANGOLA TO VIETNAM - DELUXE LIMITED HARDBOUND EDITION SIGNED AND NUMBERED BY THE ARTIST. Signed and Numbered by the Artist. Gent, BELGIUM: Imschoot, Uitgevers, 1989. First Edition 1/30 Deluxe. 8vo. Cloth Over Boards in Jacket. Artists' Book. Fine/Fine. 84pp, 27 duotone illustrations. Text in English. "Angola to Vietnam" is Christopher William's 1989 artist's book based on his photographic piece of the same title featuring twenty-seven images of glass flowers from Harvard University’s Peabody Museum of Natural History. "Drawing from the Peabody’s cache of sculptural specimens, Christopher Williams selected only those plants native to countries in which state-sponsored murders occurred in 1984. The information affixed to each photograph mimics the museum’s labels, but here Williams places the country of origin above the flower’s Latin name, subtly foregrounding the political over the natural. By referencing government-sanctioned atrocities, Williams calls attention to the flowers’ colonial origins, as the science of botany is rooted in the tangled and often exploitative history of international exploration and trade". A pristine example of the uncommon deluxe hardbound edition limited to thirty copies only SIGNED, DATED AND NUMBERED (#16/30) by the artist in black marker on the recto of the rear free endpaper, as issued. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. 90-72191-10-2 Inventory Number: 021781&

Her first book and an incredibly successful collection of short stories by an author who grew up - speaking German only - in the German ghetto of New York and encountered an English-speaking person for the first time when she was 6 or 7 years old and thought he was an alien. When she signed the book for us on her reading tour for her second book "Der Doktor braucht ein Heim" (a new signed "1 Okt 1990 / Zurich / Irene Dische" first edtition of which we provide with this item), Irene Dische told us that not only did she not own a copy of the limited edition, but also that she had never even seen one. [Vence]: Pierre Chave / Kenneth Nahan, [1989].. Small folio (38.5 x 28 cm). Loose gatherings laid into pictorial wrappers, enclosed in folding cloth chemise and slipcase. Very fine. First English language edition. Illustrated with thirty- four original lithographs and two vignettes by Max Ernst. One of 199 numbered copies (of 217) on Arches, with the text in English, signed by the author and the artist. The lithographs for all the editions were printed at Atelier Chave in 1972, contemporary with the preparation and publication of the edition of the French text (a total of 315 copies). A German language edition (also consisting of 199 copies plus 18 h.c.) was published. The English translation, prepared in 1972 by Nicolette Bernard, Peter Leslie and George Kimball, was not actually printed until 1989 (also at Atelier Chave). An irreverent and pointed attack on authoritarianism and militarism, the text written decades earlier, presented as a late collaboration of two old friends. MONOD 9695.

Ridgefield, CT: CPC Publishing, 1989. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. Ridgefield, CT: CPC Publishing, 1989. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. The photographer's breakthrough collection of celebrity portraits and male and female nudes. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with the Second Edition. Volume One of the landmark two-volume set. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. The edition is now rare. Each volume was published separately, ten years apart from each other, and by different publishers. The reason they nevertheless work perfectly together is that Greg Gorman maintained full creative control over the production of both. A stunningly beautiful production by Greg Gorman and Gary Johns: Oversize-volume format. Photographs by Greg Gorman. There is minimal text. Printed on thick uncoated stock paper by the legendary Rapaport Printing Company New York to the very highest standards. In pictorial DJ, which utilizes a male nude in front and a celebrity portrait on the back, and white titles on the spine, as issued. Presents Greg Gorman's finest and most representative images in the two genres that he has excelled and established himself in: The celebrity portrait and the nude. Dramatically lit black-and-white, full-page photographs of celebrities are juxtaposed with spectacular, highly erotic nudes, including the now-classic six-panel fold-out of the model Tony Ward in different Classical Sculpture-inspired, full-frontal nude poses. The celebrity portraits include Al Pacino, David Bowie, Charlie Sheen, Warren Beatty, Madonna, Rupert Everett, Pee-Wee Herman, Kim Basinger, Robin Williams, Andy Warhol, and Michael Jackson, among many others. An accomplished Hollywood and lifestyle magazine photographer who has done commercial work for HBO, Columbia Pictures, Interview Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Playboy Magazine, LIFE, and Tatler, among others, Greg Gorman's true passions are the charismatic personality of the celebrity and the chiseled perfection of the human form, as only the (his) camera can capture. This breakthrough collection offers definitive and ample proof of Greg Gorman's distinctive style and outstanding mastery of his chosen medium. A gorgeous "coffee-table" book, this is a "must-have" title for Greg Gorman collectors. This presentation copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, dated, and inscribed in black pen on the flyleaf by the photographer: "Thanks for coming and also for your interest in my work. I hope we can do more projects together in the future. All my best, Greg Gorman 3/27/90". Gorman's handwriting is unusually clean, flowing, and elegant. The recipient is named and was one of Greg Gorman's most important commercial clients. This title is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only signed and inscribed copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Gorman did not sign most copies and many copies available online have major flaws yet command up to $500. A rare, one-of-a-kind signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with duotone plates. One of the finest living American photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER GREG GORMAN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1871681006.

Sacramento, CA: William T. Vollmann/Vagabond Books, 1989. First Edition. First Printing.. Lithograph. Fine/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Sacramento, CA: William T. Vollmann/Vagabond Books, 1989. Lithograph. Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 1 pages. Rare William T. Vollmann collectible art piece. A framed copy of "The Tale of The Dying Lungs" broadside, whose stunning image was created by the author. Limited Edition of 200 numbered and signed copies. There appears to be a 1995 Edition reissued by the publisher and available online. If so, this 1989 Edition precedes by eight years and should not be confused with it. An austerely elegant production by William T. Vollmann: Broadside size is large at 13 X 25.5 inches. Art and text by William T. Vollmann. Black titles on top in bold letters. Purple-and-black X-Ray impression of human lungs in the center. Text printed underneath. Printed on Rives Heavyweight Paper using LetterPress by Patrick Reagh. The piece is pressed between two pieces of UV-protected Plexiglas and elegantly framed in black wood. Frame size is 20 X 32 inches. Presents "The Tale of The Dying Lungs", which Vollmann scholars consider to be his first original, handmade art piece sold on a commercial basis. From the beginning, William T. Vollmann has created original art in addition to his prodigious output as a writer. Like his other works in the same vein, "The Tale of The Dying Lungs" is eloquent and morbidly beautiful. While the tale has been interpreted as having a cautionary "anti-smoking/pro-health" message, a closer reading of the text will instead reveal both an existential theme and a social message. In one paragraph (juxtaposed with the X-Ray image of death), Vollmann captures how someone terminally ill suffers yet clings desperately to life until the very end, "to catch his breath and stay alive a little longer". He must suffer twice over: His physical pain is compounded by the pain that an inhumane healthcare system inflicts upon him because it is more concerned with the bottom line than keeping him alive. After all, he signed off his life when he agreed to "No Code" status, which means not being hooked up to a respirator when his heart stops. Death is prompt and impatient. When the time finally comes, he "choked and choked and choked and died". The broadside as a work of art, this is a "must-have" item for William T. Vollmann collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Edition, indicated as such on recto, Number 93, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue ink-pen by William T. Vollmann. Vollmann has subtly altered his familiar signature: It tapers off in imitation of a dying person's EKG (electrocardiograph). This piece is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such framed copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed item. Selected by The New Yorker Magazine as one of "Twenty Writers for the 21st Century". Nominated by the National Book Critics Circle Awards in 2003 for "Rising Up and Rising Down", his multi-volume history on violence. Winner of the National Book Award in 2005 for "Europe Central". One of the finest living American writers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER WILLIAM T. VOLLMANN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

[Np]. 1989.. Original 16 x 20" black & white photograph (image size 12 x 18" landscape orientation). One corner faintly bumped, otherwise fine. A vintage print of this superb photographic portrait of Burroughs, taken at his shooting range. Burroughs, wearing a hat and combat jacket, with automatic pistol in hand, is standing in front of an array of bullet-riddled targets, framed by the larger rough timber and log backstop, facing the camera directly with a broad, closed- lipped grin. Inscribed by the photographer on the verso: "For Walter Reuben - Merry Xmas From Nelson Lyon '89." Lyon, screenwriter, producer, and former SNL writer, was associated with Burroughs on a number of projects, including the recording, DEAD CITY RADIO, and the audio- book version of NAKED LUNCH. According to the recipient of this print, Lyon made about six exhibition quality prints of this photograph in 1989, like the one in hand, all for presentation; subsequently, the photograph has been reproduced in books about Burroughs, and was used as the Burroughs obit photo by the SF CHRONICLE. Later printings of the photograph have been exhibited and sold through galleries. Burroughs contributed an introductory note to the 1979 catalogue of Reuben's Kerouac Collection.
