On the Art of Painting. Interpreted by Zahra Partovi. With 26 line etchings by Annette Senneby.

Vincent FitzGerald & Company, New York 1989 - One of 50 copies only, each on Rives Johannot and Dieu Donne handmade paper, signed by both Partovi and Senneby on the colophon. Page size: 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. Illustrated by the noted Swedish sculptor, Annette Senneby, with a continuous etched line that extends across the box housing the book, across the covers and endpapers and on each page of text, in white on the mottled endpapers lining the box and the endpapers of the book, in charcoal gray on the white text. The line crosses the pages in various directions - now going diagonally up, now down. The strong etched line can be seen through the pages forming a ghostly pattern on the viewed page. This mirrors Rumi's parable of the painting contest between the ancient Greeks and Chinese. The text is repeated in Persian calligraphy after the English text, divided by a rust-colored paper insert, but the etched line continues. The text is printed in gray ink by Daniel Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress. The etchings were accomplished by Marjorie Van Dyke and M'Lis Bartlett at The Printmaking Workshop. The Persian calligraphy is by Zahra Partovi. Bound by Zahra Partovi: black silk with blind etched line on both covers, rust-colored gray endpapers with white etched line, sewn with Persian signature on the diagonal as are the covers, forming a trapezoid. Housed in a black linen trapezoid box with a steel panel set into both covers covering the entire surface but for a small border. The steel panels are etched with a continuous line. The book has a sculptural feel about it; yet it is still the printed work in book form that can be held and read. Rumi's parable is set off by the simplicity of the book's conception and design.

» [Michel Butor]. Emballages soignés, expédition rapide. Photographies originales du livre visibles sur librairie-solstices .         Archive of Letters, Signed Documents, and Related Materials

[Mostly Menard, IL; ca 1989-93]. Vachula, a Chicago freelance journalist, penned his article "The Gacy Connection" for Chicago Magazine's July, 1989 issue. The article presented convincing (but ultimately inconclusive) evidence that John Wayne Gacy's career as a serial killer may have extended as far back as 1955, when he was just thirteen years old, and that he may have been responsible for the unsolved deaths of three teenage Chicago neighbors that year. Vachula's correspondence with Gacy deals primarily with Gacy's early years in Chicago; his friendships with other neighborhood boys, landmarks, and events, in an attempt to establish some chain of association between Gacy and the three slain boys. Gacy is by turns cooperative, rambling, belligerent, self-serving and self-aggrandizing, often demanding compensation for his efforts. But in general he proves surprisingly open about his past and his "accomplishments," and in aggregate the letters contain a tremendous amount of biographical background on one of America's most notorious serial killers. The letters were quoted at length in Vachula's article, but have never been published in full. In addition to the letters from Gacy, the archive contains a number of significant related documents, including advertising flyers for Gacy's prison-produced clown paintings; letters to other Gacy correspondents (collected by Vachula); press releases, photocopied documents produced by Gacy to be included in his correspondence, etc. A total of 49 items, providing a chilling record of a notorious criminal career. PROVENANCE: Through the trade, from the collection of Richard Vachula. Archive of 18 substantial typed, signed letters with excellent content, together with 5 other related signed documents; 15 unsigned documents generated by Mr. Gacy, and approximately 10 further related items, all assembled by journalist Richard Vachula, most in the course of writing a 1989 article for Chicago Magazine on Gacy's infamous career as a serial-killer. Letters generally 2 to 5 typed pages in length (a few shorter), signed either "John" or "J.W.," most with return envelopes bearing Gacy's prisoner number. The archive housed in protective sleeves in a three-ring binder. Condition generally fine.

A Time to Kill (Inscribed First Edition)

New York: Wynwood Press, 1989. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. Inscribed by the author: "To Jeannie - Thanks. I hope you enjoy the book. Best wishes, John Grisham 7-11-89." Wynwood published 5,000 copies of the book (but effectively had no marketing budget for the book); Grisham purchased 1,000 copies himself to sell and then started touring book shops, libraries, friends' living rooms, etc. in the hopes of selling them. A wonderful early inscription on the book that launched the most successful legal fiction career in several generations. & & Book Near Fine with a small stain on the rear board, but likely unread. In a Near Fine dust jacket with a little nick at the base of the spine, but generally in excellent condition.& & Grisham's compelling legal thriller, set in Mississippi, that follows the trial of a man accused of killing his daughter's attackers. The idea for A Time to Kill came to Grisham while he worked as a lawyer in Mississippi, when he heard testimony from a young victim describing her assault. The book was later adapted into a well received 1996 film, starring Matthew McConaughey, Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson, and Kevin Spacey. Near Fine in Near Fine. dust jacket.

        GINSBERG A BIOGRAPHY

New York: Simon & Schuster, [1989].. Large octavo. Cloth and boards. Photographs. Near fine in lightly worn dust jacket. First edition. An excellent association copy, inscribed by the subject to his long-time friend and early mentor, Lucien Carr: "Dear Lucien - Here's a copy of a volume I didn't write - Allen 5/24/91 N.Y." Ginsberg met Carr at Columbia University in 1943, and through Carr met Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady and William Burroughs. In the NYT Obituary for Carr (30 January 2005), Ginsberg's earlier comment about Carr's role in the circle of friendships that gave birth to the literary arm of the Beat generation was quoted: "Lou was the glue." Carr turns up in the text and in the index of this work with some frequency.

Pathways In Geology: Essays in Honour of Edwin Sherbon Hills

Hills Memorial Volume Committee & Blackwell Scientific Publications, Melbourne 1989 - Very Near Fine in a like jacket. See scans. Melbourne: Hills Memorial Volume Committee & Blackwell Scientific Publications, 1989. First Edition. Pathways In Geology: Essays in Honour of Edwin Sherbon Hills. ISBN # 0731682416. Quarto, orange illustrated jacket, white textured cloth boards imprinted in orange, 10 + 463 pp. A very, very sharp Near Fine volume, with just several small clear spots on the copyright page, not affecting text, and a small patch of dust of page fore edges; jacket is also Near Fine, bight and unclipped, with no salient issues whatever; just sprinkling of several black specs on front cover, barely visible. Please see scans. Far more than a tribute to Edwin Sherbon Hills, this extremely rare volume is replete with scholarly text and seemingly countless graphic enhancements - maps, charts, tables, photographs, perspective sketches. Primarily straight Aussie geology, but there is an engrossing and related palaeontological section as well. See scans of both contents pages for details. Apparently peerless as example of surviving available copies - we have, in fact, seen no others at all recently. A true and valued rarity. L54n [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Norwegian Wood.

Kodansha, Tokyo 1989 - First editions in English of the author's most well-known work. Small octavos, original wrappers as issued. Both volumes are fine in fine dust jackets. Both volumes are signed by Murakami, volume one is signed in both English and Japanese and volume 2 in Japanese. Laid in is the original bookmark in volume one. Norwegian Wood is a nostalgic story of loss and sexuality. The story's protagonist and narrator is Toru Watanabe, who looks back on his days as a freshman university student living in Tokyo. Through Toru's reminiscences we see him develop relationships with two very different women — the beautiful yet emotionally troubled Naoko, and the outgoing, lively Midori. The novel is set in Tokyo during the late 1960s, a time when Japanese students, like those of many other nations, were protesting against the established order. While it serves as the backdrop against which the events of the novel unfold, Murakami (through the eyes of Toru and Midori) portrays the student movement as largely weak-willed and hypocritical. Murakami adapted the first section of the novel from an earlier short story, "Firefly." The story was subsequently included in the collection Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman.
