The Watercolours and Drawings of Thomas Bewick and his Workshop Apprentices. In two volumes

Northumberland - Thomas Bewick Birthplace Trust, 1989. Northumberland - Thomas Bewick Birthplace Trust, 1989 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A lovely set examining the engraver Thomas Bewick and his work. Portrait frontispieces to both volumes and numerous illustrations in the text throughout, many colour, many full page, depicting examples of Bewick's work. With an introduction and notes by Iain Bain. Complete in two volumes. Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) was a wood-engraver. He published huge numbers of books for children with wonderful illustrations, but his national reputation was fully established by his General History of Quadrupeds, published in 1790, and his History of British Birdsland birds in 1797, and water birds in 1804. The inspiration sprang from his great dissatisfaction with the crudely illustrated books of his youth. Apart from the excellence of the principal figures, the numerous tailpiece vignettes that enlivened every spare space in the book came in for special notice. More than 600 blocks had been engraved for the two volumes of the Birds when the last of the eight editions of Bewick's lifetime had been published. DNBCondition: In cloth bindings. Externally excellent, very little shelfwear, just one or two marks. Internally, firmly bound. Beautifully bright and clean throughout. Overall: NEAR FINE.

Hugo von Montfort - Gedichte und Lieder. Faksimile des Codex Palatinus Germanicus 329 der Universitätsbibliothek Heidelberg

Reichert, L, 1989.. [109] S. : Ill. Hldr.. ISBN 3882263784

        Second Version of Triptych 1944

Paris: Michael Archimbaud for the Librairie Seguier for IRCAM, Centre Pompidou., 1989. Paris: Michael Archimbaud for the Librairie Seguier for IRCAM, Centre Pompidou., 1989. 3 offset lithographs on Arches paper. Image sizes: 62 x 46 cm. Sheet sizes: 75.5 x 56 cm. Excellent condition. Presented in three limed wood frames by John Jones. Artist's proof aside from the edition of 60. Signed in pencil lower right by Bacon, inscribed EA (Épreuve d'artiste) lower left. Part man, part beast, these howling creatures first appeared in Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, which Bacon painted during the Second World War. One critic described that picture as a reflection of 'the atrocious world into which we have survived'. Bacon identified his distorted figures with the vengeful Greek Furies, while the title places them in the Christian context of the crucifixion. In this version, painted in 1988, Bacon changed the background colour from orange to blood red, and placed more space around the figures, plunging them into a deep void.
