On their wanders through the palaces and villas of the province of Viterbo, the authors of this volume have reconstructed the stories of several women who lived there and left their (often secret) mark upon them. A whole region has thus been populated by female figures - meek, powerful, touching, severe, even tragic - from the much-maligned Giulia "la Bella", the lover of Pope Alexander VI, to the hapless Maria Hardouin d'Annunzio, duchess of Gallese. - Libro nuovo

THE FIRST BOOK OF MOSES, CALLED GENESIS. THE KING JAMES VERSION

New York: Limited Editions Club, 1989. hardcover. The clamshell box has a small area of discoloration on the front cover; the book is as new. Fine in a suede lined linen clamshell box with leather label. Jacob Lawrence. Large folio bound in full midnight blue Japanese cotton. Number 356 of only 400 numbered copies, SIGNED on the colophon by Jacob Lawrence who has contributed 8 original silkscreens to this massive (16" x 22") and truly magnificent work, one of the high points of the press. These silkscreens are identical, except for not being individually signed, to the very few portfolios of eight prints currently selling for upwards of fifty thousand dollars. According to the publisher, anywhere from 17 to 21 screens were required to bring out the coloring of each illustration, making a total of 144 separate stencils, all of which were destroyed after the strictly limited number of some 400 original sets of prints had been achieved on the fine Whatman paper specified by the Osiris Printing Studio in New York. The text was printed on a heavy handmade paper from Cartiere Enrico Magnani of Pescia, Italy. Monthly Letter laid in. A gorgeous book.

Archive of Letters, Signed Documents, and Related Materials

[Mostly Menard, IL; ca 1989-93]. Vachula, a Chicago freelance journalist, penned his article "The Gacy Connection" for Chicago Magazine's July, 1989 issue. The article presented convincing (but ultimately inconclusive) evidence that John Wayne Gacy's career as a serial killer may have extended as far back as 1955, when he was just thirteen years old, and that he may have been responsible for the unsolved deaths of three teenage Chicago neighbors that year. Vachula's correspondence with Gacy deals primarily with Gacy's early years in Chicago; his friendships with other neighborhood boys, landmarks, and events, in an attempt to establish some chain of association between Gacy and the three slain boys. Gacy is by turns cooperative, rambling, belligerent, self-serving and self-aggrandizing, often demanding compensation for his efforts. But in general he proves surprisingly open about his past and his "accomplishments," and in aggregate the letters contain a tremendous amount of biographical background on one of America's most notorious serial killers. The letters were quoted at length in Vachula's article, but have never been published in full. & & In addition to the letters from Gacy, the archive contains a number of significant related documents, including advertising flyers for Gacy's prison-produced clown paintings; letters to other Gacy correspondents (collected by Vachula); press releases, photocopied documents produced by Gacy to be included in his correspondence, etc. A total of 49 items, providing a chilling record of a notorious criminal career. & & PROVENANCE: Through the trade, from the collection of Richard Vachula. Archive of 18 substantial typed, signed letters with excellent content, together with 5 other related signed documents; 15 unsigned documents generated by Mr. Gacy, and approximately 10 further related items, all assembled by journalist Richard Vachula, most in the course of writing a 1989 article for Chicago Magazine on Gacy's infamous career as a serial-killer. Letters generally 2 to 5 typed pages in length (a few shorter), signed either "John" or "J.W.," most with return envelopes bearing Gacy's prisoner number. The archive housed in protective sleeves in a three-ring binder. Condition generally fine.

Neither.Nor. & Countdown With Drawings by Sheila Bourne. [In a Dos-a-dos Bookbinding by Jill Oriane Tarlau].

Kickshaws Press, Paris, (Neither.Nor.): 1989 & (Countdown): 1990. Number 51 of 60 & B9 of 80; both signed by John Crombie. In a Dos-a-dos binding by Jill Oriane Tarlau. - Size of the binding: 7 7/8 inches x 8 3/8 in., unpaginated (the pages have been lightly numbered in pencil: 14 for neither/nor + 12 for Countdown); illustrations, by Sheila Bourne printed in color. The handcrafted, dos-a-dos bookbinding, created by Jill Oriane Tarlau, bears her blind-stamp: Oriane in the lower edge of the inner front cover, and the date: 1992 in the inner front cover of Countdown. The two books have been bound together, back-to-back, using contrasting maroon and orange-brown leathers for the spines and covers of the books, with Neither.Nor showing an orange-brown spine and a maroon front cover, with a geometric design of various colors and surfaces of onlaid leathers, incorporating reflective materials, and colored plastic stones, with the spine having the titling; the cover of Countdown is in orange-brown leather with a different design also constructed of similar onlaid leathers and plastic stones, with a red leather spine, which is gilt-lettered with the title; contrasting orange and violet endpapers. In a specially constructed drop-back box, which features a gilt-lettered, maroon leather spine and edges, with a hand-decorated, multi-colored, abstract design paste-paper on the sides and edges; the interior of the box is lined with purple and orange suede, with recessed areas to accommodate the plastic materials which are onlaid on the covers. Jill Oriane Tarlau is noted for using unusual materials in her bindings, she was the subject of an exhibition held at the Arion Gallery, earlier in 2007. [Colophon]: "Neither.Nor. has been printed by the author in an edition limited to sixty numbered and signed copies. Each copy is unique, inasmuch as each is the product of a series of four complete, separate runs through the press (not counting the text), the inks being applied by hand at each pass to allow them to blend more or less at random, from the first streaks of primary colours to the ultimate dissolution of the images thus generated. Copy No. 51 [signed]: John Crombie" "Designed and written by John Crombie, with drawings by Sheila Bourne, [-] printed by the author in an edition of eighty copies, in three successive-and it is believed successively more successful-series: A1 to A25, B1 to B25 and C1 to C30, all signed.

[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

In addition to the letters from Gacy, the archive contains a number of significant related documents, including advertising flyers for Gacy's prison-produced clown paintings; letters to other Gacy correspondents (collected by Vachula); press releases, photocopied documents produced by Gacy to be included in his correspondence, etc. A total of 49 items, providing a chilling record of a notorious criminal career. PROVENANCE: Through the trade, from the collection of Richard Vachula.
