New York: Whitney Museum [1989], 1989 First edition. 1/250 non-numbered copies [of a total edition of 280 copies, the remaining 30 copies being author/artist contributor copies numbered in Roman Numerals] signed by both Stephen King and Barbara Kruger on the signature/limitation/colophon page at the rear of the book. Very oversize [roughly 14" x 21"] and quite heavy volume, red leather spine with solid metal faced "boards" binding [which, ideally, should only be handled with gloved hands to avoid marring the brushed finish with fingerprints], with a battery-operated clock inset as part of the front cover [battery no longer operational, as planned, although it could be replaced if one so chose]. NB: This book was not issued in, nor is this copy accompanied by, the double-tray drop spine box [traycase] that was optionally available for separate purchase through BookLab. At least two variants of the traycase have been reported, but neither of them originally came with the book, although some unreported number were purchased and over time "married" to copies of the book by their respective owners. Fine copy [unread with the inter-page protective tissue inserts still in place] [with the usual light fingerprint marks to the brushed-finish metal boards from not always being handled with gloved hands] [not issued in Dust Wrapper] [enclosed inside of a clear plastic bag, which is still present with this copy] inside the original mailing carton.. Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/No Jacket.

Giacomo Joyce. Interpreted by Susan Weil (Signed Limited Edition in Unique Binding)

New York: Vincent Fitzgerald & Co, 1989. Limited Edition . Hardcover. Fine. This is a signed limited edition of \"Giacomo Joyce\" published by Vincent Fitzgerald & Co, New York in 1989 with a limitation of 50 copies with this being number 20. Published on the 75th anniversary of the writing of Joyce\'s prose poem which was first published in 1968 in a facsimile of the original manuscript, this extraordinary livre d\'artiste work is hand-collaged using specially made papers, some with flower petals in the paper, Japanese laces, silver tea paper, and it explores several graphic media, including pochoir and etch and also contains a number of original watercolors. Priscilla Spitler provided a special binding for \"Giacomo Joyce\", originally published by Vincent FitzGerald & Co. in 12 loose sections. The sections were hand sewn onto a cloth backing and bound in a quarter case with maroon goatskin on the spine and gray handmade paper on the boards. In keeping with the handmade paper of the original text, handmade paper endpapers were added for the inside pastedowns. Both the outer and inner papers were made by Cave Papers of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The title was stamped in pewter foil on the book spine and on a maroon leather label for the box spine. The leather \"GJ\" motif was created for the clamshell box that houses the book. The book measures 13.5 x 10 inches and the clamshell box measures 14.5 x 10.5 inches. The text and illustrations are printed on handmade Dieu Donné and special Japanese papers by Daniel Keleher and Bruce Chandler at Wild Carrot Letterpress. The printed text pages utilize various types and colors of paper constructions with graphics placed between the pages including details in watercolor, a printed section from \"The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man\" on pink paper, and numerous collages, etchings, and various shapes that interact with the text. This is a beautiful production that uses mixed media in a remarkable way to interpret \"Giacomo Joyce\". The clamshell box is in FINE condition. The book is in FINE- condition with a few random superficial marks on the pages. There is some waviness to the pages which is usual and customary for the type of handmade paper used to produce the book. Susan Weil has signed and numbered the edition below the portrait of Joyce facing the colophon. Susan Weil is considered one of the most accomplished interpreters of Joyce and her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions staged by The James Joyce Society and leading galleries throughout the world. In her 2003 exhibition at the James Joyce Society she stated, \"I have been making Joyce related work for 18 years. This journey began with my working on a limited edition book with the publisher Vincent FitzGerald. In 1987 I made images for another livre d\'artiste, Giacomo Joyce and then in 1991, Brideship and Gulls. During this time I was studying and drawing to all the writings of Joyce. This led to studio work which was exhibited in Lund, Sweden in 1990 and Basel, Switzerland in 1996. The James Joyce Quarterly published an article about my work with Joyce and I also lectured about my work in 1989 at the Joyce symposium in Zurich.\" Susan Weil studied at the Academie Julian in Paris and Black Mountain College in North Carolina with Robert Motherwell and Ben Shahn and was previously married to fellow student Robert Rauschenberg.

WALLPAPERS BY EDWARD BAWDEN PRINTED AT THE CURWEN PRESS. With an Introduction by Edward Bawden

The Whittington Press, Andoversford 1989 - folio. quarter cloth with boards covered with a facsimile of a Bawden wall paper design, slipcase. xii, 18, (4) pages followed by seven thick leaves on which are mounted foldout specimens of Bawden's wallpaper designs. Limited to 120 numbered copies. Printed by hand at the Whittington Press on Oxford mould-made paper, binding by The Fine Bindery and half-tone and color plates printed at the Senecio Press. This is one of the 40 copies to contain sheets or parts of sheets of seven original wallpapers. In the text by McKitterick are the following illustrations: 1. Foldout facsimile of a wall paper sheet produced for the Curwen Press, 2. two leaves containing 7 illustrations in black and white and 9 illustrations in color. From the prospectus: "For a few years after 1926, the Curwen Press produced a series of wallpapers. They were designed principally by Edward Bawden, whose linocuts were transferred to lithographic plates for printing. Unlike most modern wallpapers, printed on long rolls of paper, these were printed in the traditional manner, as sheets, in sizes up to about 34 x 22 ins. Very few of these sheets survive. Just enough papers were available to issue 120 sets of Wallpapers Printed at the Curwen Press. This portfolio presents a unique opportunity to acquire a representative selection of the Press's work. Single sheets of these papers are known to fetch $175.00 and more in galleries, an indication of both their popularity and their rarity." quarter cloth with boards covered with a facsimile of a Bawden wall paper design, slipcase [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Bildhauer - jetzt Kammerbulle u. Innen teils etwas fleckig, teils etwas angerändert. Sonst und insgesamt jedoch gutes, attraktives Exemplar. 902 Gramm. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Illustrationes florae Novae Hollandiae sive Icones Generum quae in Prodromo Novae Hollandiae et Insulae Van Diemen descripsit Robertus Brown

London: Alecto Historical Editions, 1989. Very large folio, 624 x 490mm, with a series of 15 engraved plates after Bauer, in two states, sepia and bound, or hand-coloured (by Karen Lightfoot or Helen Wellard) and unbound; number XV, in fine condition in the original cloth-backed marbled boards, the coloured plates loose within window mounts, all contained within a single very large green morocco-backed solander box, by Aquarius. From an edition of 35. One of just 35 numbered copies (this copy is numbered XV): Ferdinand Bauer's wonderful botany of the Flinders voyage, with the plates in two states - uncoloured (sepia) and coloured. This is an exceptional modern publication, highly limited, which makes use of the original copper-engraved plates to recreate Bauer's extraordinary, rare and beautiful work on the botany of Australia. This is the only printing to have been done from the original plates since their first use of them for the original 1813 edition. 'The 15 plates which make up this publication were stipple-engraved on copper by Bauer between 1806 and 1813 after his watercolours drawn from nature on Captain Matthew Flinders' circumnavigation of Australia in HMS Investigator 1801-1803. Both plates and watercolours are now in the collection of the British Museum (Natural History)…'. These new impressions, the first to be taken from the original copperplates since Bauer's 1813 edition, were printed a la poupée and hand-finished in watercolour. The original printing of Bauer's work in 1813 is exceptionally rare today. "Probably less than 50 copies… were issued" (Great Flower Books, 1990). Both Stafleu and Great Flower Books note that Ferdinand Bauer engraved the plates himself; according to Bauer's elder brother, the amount of work involved was too much for Ferdinand and he was forced to suspend the project after only three parts were published as he could not find competent engravers to complete the work. Born in Feldsberg, Austria in 1760, Ferdinand was the son of the court painter to the Prince of Liechtenstein. He was trained in botany at the monastery of Feldsberg under the protection of Norbert Boccius (1729-1800). Ferdinand was later sent to study at the Royal Botanical Gardens at Schonbrunn Palace before travelling to England and studying with John Sibthorp, the celebrated Professor of Botany at Oxford. Bauer's first published work was the famous series of engravings that he made for Sibthorp's great Flora Graeca -described by Joseph Hooker as "the greatest botanical work that has ever appeared" (On the Flora of Australia, 1859). His talent soon caught the attention of Sir Joseph Banks who was involved in the preparations for Matthew Flinders's voyage in the Investigator, which was to make the first circumnavigation of Australia. Ferdinand was invited to be the expedition's artist, whilst the botanist on this momentous expedition was Robert Brown. In 1801 Bauer was employed on the coastal survey of New Holland carried out under the command of Captain Flinders. In 1803, after the Investigator was condemned as unseaworthy, Flinders left for England to obtain another ship to complete the expedition. Bauer and Brown, however, continued their travels in Australia. They were an ideal team, Brown describing the collected specimens and Bauer sketching and painting them. Bauer continued, collecting and sketching on Norfolk Island and in New South Wales, while Brown went south to Van Diemen's Land. They finally returned to England in 1805 with several thousand botanical specimens and many hundreds of sketches of plants. Sir Joseph Banks persuaded the Admiralty to pay Ferdinand to work on a selection of the plates for publication, and the book was prepared in three parts of five plates each. Both coloured and uncoloured copies of the book were issued in 1813. Ferdinand returned to his native Austria and died in Vienna in 1826.

        Norwegian Wood

Tokyo: Kodansha, 1989.. Tokyo: Kodansha, 1989. First editions in English of the author's most well-known work. Small octavos, original wrappers as issued. Both volumes are fine in fine dust jackets. Both volumes are signed by Murakami, volume one is signed in both English and Japanese and volume 2 in Japanese. Laid in is the original bookmark in volume one. Norwegian Wood is a nostalgic story of loss and sexuality. The story's protagonist and narrator is Toru Watanabe, who looks back on his days as a freshman university student living in Tokyo. Through Toru's reminiscences we see him develop relationships with two very different women — the beautiful yet emotionally troubled Naoko, and the outgoing, lively Midori. The novel is set in Tokyo during the late 1960s, a time when Japanese students, like those of many other nations, were protesting against the established order. While it serves as the backdrop against which the events of the novel unfold, Murakami (through the eyes of Toru and Midori) portrays the student movement as largely weak-willed and hypocritical. Murakami adapted the first section of the novel from an earlier short story, "Firefly." The story was subsequently included in the collection Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman.

The crown of the spine is marred by three pin- pick size holes in the surface cloth and several smaller dents (evidently the work of a cat), otherwise fine. One of fifty numbered copies, with the text and illustrations printed on handmade Dieu Donné and special Japanese papers by Daniel Keleher and Bruce Chandler at Wild Carrot Letterpress, signed and numbered by the artist below the portrait of Joyce facing the colophon. As a follow-up to her collaborative edition of Joyce's EPIPHANIES of 1987, Weil here illustrates Joyce's text in a variety of media, including etchings, stencil cuttings, original watercolors, etc. The calligraphy was executed by Jerry Kelly, the etchings printed by Marjorie Van Dyke, and the collages by Zahra Partovi.

        Isabel Bishop: Eight Etchings, 1927-1934

New York: Sylvan Cole Gallery / Midtown Galleries, 1989 - A portfolio of eight etchings by Bishop, each in its own folder. From a total edition of 60, all printed on fine Rives wove paper, THIS IS THE UNIQUE SET OF BONS A TIRER ("BATs"), printed for Sylvan Cole, the publisher. Since the edition could be printed only after the BATs were produced, this is THE FIRST SET PRINTED. Each etching is justified ("BAT") and bears Bishop's stamped signature (she had died in 1988). Furthermore, this is an outstanding association copy, having been in the private collection of Sylvan Cole (1918-2005), dean of American print dealers, until his death. Cole, a close friend of Bishop's, supervised the compilation of Teller's catalogue raisonne of her prints. Folio. Loose as issued in the original cloth clamshell case. FINE AND BRIGHT, with no defects. Teller 3, 5, 7, 11, 12B, 14, 15, and 17. IMPORTANT NOTE: During March, 2006, hundreds of prints represented as being from "the Sylvan Cole collection" were sold at public auction. In fact, ALL of these items were from his leftover gallery inventory, not his private collection. As far as I know, the few items I offer from Sylvan's collection are the ONLY items anywhere on the market which are actually from his private collection (which he kept in his apartment, not his gallery). I acquired them all directly from Sylvan (my uncle), mainly in spring, 2005. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
