Neither.Nor. & Countdown With Drawings by Sheila Bourne. [In a Dos-a-dos Bookbinding by Jill Oriane Tarlau].

Kickshaws Press, Paris, (Neither.Nor.): 1989 & (Countdown): 1990. Number 51 of 60 & B9 of 80; both signed by John Crombie. In a Dos-a-dos binding by Jill Oriane Tarlau. - Size of the binding: 7 7/8 inches x 8 3/8 in., unpaginated (the pages have been lightly numbered in pencil: 14 for neither/nor + 12 for Countdown); illustrations, by Sheila Bourne printed in color. The handcrafted, dos-a-dos bookbinding, created by Jill Oriane Tarlau, bears her blind-stamp: Oriane in the lower edge of the inner front cover, and the date: 1992 in the inner front cover of Countdown. The two books have been bound together, back-to-back, using contrasting maroon and orange-brown leathers for the spines and covers of the books, with Neither.Nor showing an orange-brown spine and a maroon front cover, with a geometric design of various colors and surfaces of onlaid leathers, incorporating reflective materials, and colored plastic stones, with the spine having the titling; the cover of Countdown is in orange-brown leather with a different design also constructed of similar onlaid leathers and plastic stones, with a red leather spine, which is gilt-lettered with the title; contrasting orange and violet endpapers. In a specially constructed drop-back box, which features a gilt-lettered, maroon leather spine and edges, with a hand-decorated, multi-colored, abstract design paste-paper on the sides and edges; the interior of the box is lined with purple and orange suede, with recessed areas to accommodate the plastic materials which are onlaid on the covers. Jill Oriane Tarlau is noted for using unusual materials in her bindings, she was the subject of an exhibition held at the Arion Gallery, earlier in 2007. [Colophon]: "Neither.Nor. has been printed by the author in an edition limited to sixty numbered and signed copies. Each copy is unique, inasmuch as each is the product of a series of four complete, separate runs through the press (not counting the text), the inks being applied by hand at each pass to allow them to blend more or less at random, from the first streaks of primary colours to the ultimate dissolution of the images thus generated. Copy No. 51 [signed]: John Crombie" "Designed and written by John Crombie, with drawings by Sheila Bourne, [-] printed by the author in an edition of eighty copies, in three successive-and it is believed successively more successful-series: A1 to A25, B1 to B25 and C1 to C30, all signed. Copy No B9 [signed]: John Crombie". Weight: 3 1/4 lbs. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

» [Michel Butor]. Emballages soignés, expédition rapide. Photographies originales du livre visibles sur librairie-solstices .       Vincent FitzGerald & Company, New York 1989 - One of 50 copies only on handmade J.B. Green paper, each copy signed by the artist and translator. Illustrated by Susan Weil with 18 original hand- colored line etchings, mirrored on verso in colored mezzotints by Shigemitsu Tsukaguchi. The text was hand printed by Dan Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress in Diotima type by Gudrun Zapf-von Hesse with calligraphy by Jerry Kelly and Zahra Partovi. Page size: 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches, 24.5 x 16.4 cm. Bound: gray Dieu-Donne handmade paper over boards in Japanese style binding, title in silver gilt on lighter gray paper label bordered in green paper on front cover.         A Time to Kill (Inscribed First Edition)

New York: Wynwood Press, 1989. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. Inscribed by the author: "To Jeannie - Thanks. I hope you enjoy the book. Best wishes, John Grisham 7-11-89." Wynwood published 5,000 copies of the book (but effectively had no marketing budget for the book); Grisham purchased 1,000 copies himself to sell and then started touring book shops, libraries, friends' living rooms, etc. in the hopes of selling them. A wonderful early inscription on the book that launched the most successful legal fiction career in several generations. & & Book Near Fine with a small stain on the rear board, but likely unread. In a Near Fine dust jacket with a little nick at the base of the spine, but generally in excellent condition.& & Grisham's compelling legal thriller, set in Mississippi, that follows the trial of a man accused of killing his daughter's attackers. The idea for A Time to Kill came to Grisham while he worked as a lawyer in Mississippi, when he heard testimony from a young victim describing her assault. The book was later adapted into a well received 1996 film, starring Matthew McConaughey, Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson, and Kevin Spacey. Near Fine in Near Fine. dust jacket.

        GINSBERG A BIOGRAPHY

New York: Simon & Schuster, [1989].. Large octavo. Cloth and boards. Photographs. Near fine in lightly worn dust jacket. First edition. An excellent association copy, inscribed by the subject to his long-time friend and early mentor, Lucien Carr: "Dear Lucien - Here's a copy of a volume I didn't write - Allen 5/24/91 N.Y." Ginsberg met Carr at Columbia University in 1943, and through Carr met Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady and William Burroughs. In the NYT Obituary for Carr (30 January 2005), Ginsberg's earlier comment about Carr's role in the circle of friendships that gave birth to the literary arm of the Beat generation was quoted: "Lou was the glue." Carr turns up in the text and in the index of this work with some frequency.

Pathways In Geology: Essays in Honour of Edwin Sherbon Hills

Hills Memorial Volume Committee & Blackwell Scientific Publications, Melbourne 1989 - Very Near Fine in a like jacket. See scans. Melbourne: Hills Memorial Volume Committee & Blackwell Scientific Publications, 1989. First Edition. Pathways In Geology: Essays in Honour of Edwin Sherbon Hills. ISBN # 0731682416. Quarto, orange illustrated jacket, white textured cloth boards imprinted in orange, 10 + 463 pp. A very, very sharp Near Fine volume, with just several small clear spots on the copyright page, not affecting text, and a small patch of dust of page fore edges; jacket is also Near Fine, bight and unclipped, with no salient issues whatever; just sprinkling of several black specs on front cover, barely visible. Please see scans. Far more than a tribute to Edwin Sherbon Hills, this extremely rare volume is replete with scholarly text and seemingly countless graphic enhancements - maps, charts, tables, photographs, perspective sketches. Primarily straight Aussie geology, but there is an engrossing and related palaeontological section as well. See scans of both contents pages for details. Apparently peerless as example of surviving available copies - we have, in fact, seen no others at all recently. A true and valued rarity. L54n [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Norwegian Wood.

Kodansha, Tokyo 1989 - First editions in English of the author's most well-known work. Small octavos, original wrappers as issued. Both volumes are fine in fine dust jackets. Both volumes are signed by Murakami, volume one is signed in both English and Japanese and volume 2 in Japanese. Laid in is the original bookmark in volume one. Norwegian Wood is a nostalgic story of loss and sexuality. The story's protagonist and narrator is Toru Watanabe, who looks back on his days as a freshman university student living in Tokyo. Through Toru's reminiscences we see him develop relationships with two very different women — the beautiful yet emotionally troubled Naoko, and the outgoing, lively Midori. The novel is set in Tokyo during the late 1960s, a time when Japanese students, like those of many other nations, were protesting against the established order. While it serves as the backdrop against which the events of the novel unfold, Murakami (through the eyes of Toru and Midori) portrays the student movement as largely weak-willed and hypocritical. Murakami adapted the first section of the novel from an earlier short story, "Firefly." The story was subsequently included in the collection Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman.
