Autograph musical manuscript of Bluebird, a setting for two female voices with instrumental accompaniment of Herman Melville's poem. A complete working draft

      - Tsontakis studied with Hugo Weisgall, Felix Greissle and Roger Sessions. His honours include the Charles Ives Living Award, the Grawemeyer, two Kennedy Center Friedheim Awards (1989, 1992), a lifetime achievement award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (1995), a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship (1996) and numerous commissions."[His] early works are written in a dissonant chromatic idiom not unlike that of Sessions. His musical language soon shifted, however, towards a classically- influenced style characterized by large-scale harmonic prolongations and what he calls 'the timeless gesture', a reference to the past through evocation rather than quotation. With the String Quartet no. 3 'Carragio' (1986) he arrived at an idiosyncratic tonal language propelled by a non- minimalist, Beethovenian use of repetition. Another primary feature of his work, particularly notable in the Byzantium Kanon (1986) and Stabat mater (1990), is the influence of sacred music of the Greek Orthodox church. Secular folk music of the same region figures prominently in the oratorio Erotokritos (1982) and other works." Eric Moe in Grove online 5 pp. Folio (355 x 280 mm.). Notated in pencil with additional markings in coloured ink. Signed and dated 2007. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

In the Matter of Peter Edward Rose, Manager, Cincinnati Reds Baseball Club: Report to the Commissioner (a.k.a. The Dowd Report)

Office of the Commissioner Major League Baseball, New York 1989 - First edition. Quarto. Plastic comb-bound photo duplicated pages with a clear plastic front cover, and card rear cover. 225pp. Handwritten copyright notice on the title leaf. A small chip and tear on the plastic front cover, page edges a bit thumbed, a near fine copy. The damning report prepared by attorney John Dowd for the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, which resulted in the lifetime ban of Pete Rose from Major League Baseball. This copy Inscribed by the Commissioner of Major League Baseball to a young attorney in Dowd's office: "To ---, Thank you for all your help -- Bart Giamatti." Purchased by us directly from an attorney, then working in Dowd's office, who reports that when Giamatti received the final report at Dowd's office, he promised to sign autographs for the staff, most of whom proffered baseballs. Our friend offered the report instead, the evidence of which we offer here. Apparently later generation copies of this report occasionally appear in the sports world signed by either Dowd or Rose, but we have not heard of another signed by Giamatti, who died less than four months later at the age of 51, only eight days after his final decision to ban Rose. Rare thus. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        [Screenplay]: Sir Drone

Stapled photocopied pages of the handwritten manuscript used as a shooting script, and possibly as a continuity script. No cover sheet, possibly, or even probably, as issued. Quite worn around the edges, staples pulled through in a few instances, and the first and last leaves in danger of detaching, but a sound good copy. There are a few notes in an unknown hand (possibly Pettibon's) excising or emphasizing scenes, and handwritten numbers in the margins breaking the entire film into separate scenes. One of Pettibon's first films, one of four written and directed by him in 1989. According to the IMDB summary the film is about "[t]hree teenagers from the industrial part of Los Angeles [who] try to form a punk rock band in Hollywood." The film featured legendary punk and post-punk rock bass guitarist Mike Watt, and Pettibon also appeared in the film. Pettibon is a renowned artist and filmmaker. From the late 1970s through the mid-1980s, he was closely associated with the punk rock band Black Flag and the record label SST Records, both founded by his older brother Greg Ginn. Pettibon scripts are rare and ephemeral, probably not intended to have been preserved. Pettibon additionally performed with several bands, including Sur Drone. .

SINGIN' DOSE ANTI PSYCHOTIC BLUES / LIVIN' IN A POWDER KEG AND GIVIN' OFF SPARKS. Adults Only SDAPB: No. 3, July 1989; No. 4, September 1989; No. 5, February 1990, The Marc Lepine Memorial Scrapbook; No. 6, February 1990; LIPKGOS: No. 7, June 1990; No. 8, August 1990; No. 9, November 1990; No. 10, February 1991; No. 12, August 1991.

Frank's Zine, Brooklyn, NY 1989 - 60+ pp. each. Scarce and important example of this phenomena of the zine world. Frank claimed to be a psychopath, planning some kind of big mass murder. While he smoldered, he wrote these zines and sent them, rather inexpensively, to zinesters. He was a good correspondent, writing long letters in blood-red pen, always signed SINcerely and PSYCHOpathically yours. Later, zinesters began to realize that this self-proclaimed psychopath was much more than a mere faker or big talker. They started to think he was the FBI infiltration of the zine world. What a great idea, try to get leads on psychopaths via the zine world. He did get Mike Diana to submit some art for back cover and interiors. A lot of his clips came from gun magazines and what look like magazines for police and military. Whatever he was, these controversial zines are intriguing, and an important part of zine history. Frank disappeared just as suddenly as he appeared. A few videos of him are on the 'net. 9 Side stapled xerographic zines, with cardstock covers and a a couple of cardstock interior pages. Built to last. Readwear. Minor browning to covers. No. 5 has water stain on cover. No. 6 cover wrinkled. No. 8 has 1 pp. color xerox collage interior. Very good. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Arplines: a Portfolio of Lines By Harry Reese

Isla Vista: Turkey Press. 1989. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" Tall. Second Edition. H Hard Cover. Fine. INCLUDES AN ORIGINAL ACRYLIC PAINTING, DRAWINGS, COLLAGES. Stunning artists' book created by Harry Reese in 1989 / 1990. The writings of Hans Arp have inspired this portfolio of poems, prints, drawings, and collages. Text lines from the poems, letters, interviews, prose writings, and experiences of Arp have been lifted from their original contexts, worked over, translated at times, and then recombined with various new images and objects to make new poems. "The lines are Arp's, but the poems are mine", Reese declares. This stunning edition was adapted from an earlier (1980), small Turkey Press book of the same title. Each unique copy of this edition of 43 numbered and signed copies is hand-created and unique. The text is loose as issued in the artist's folding box, the cover of which is a superb original acrylic painting by Reese. Among the finest examples of work in this form by Reese, Arplines has the virtue of combining the fruits of long contemplation of Arp's life and work with the accessibility of an entertaining Dada flavor that truly shows the artist's creative joy as well as his knowledge. Harry Reese has long been among the most respected and influential printers and artists working in the book form. Signed: I Signed by Author / Artist

READING JOHN CAGE by Octavio Paz and WHITE ON BLANCO by John Cage., With woodcuts and monoprints by Ilse Schreiber-Noll.

(Tarrytown), 1989. - 15 x 22. About 28 leaves, a mixture of single sheets, double sheets, and foldout leaves. Some of the pages have been colored before letterpress. Wraps covered with a multicolor woodcut and monotype image on front. In a sepia linen traycase with inset woodcut portraits of Paz and Cage. Light wear to case. Fine. One of 14 copies signed by Paz, Cage, Noll, and Weinberger. Printed and bound by the artist. In this book, participants join voices in a complex bilingual counterpoint of mutual admiration. Paz's poem is printed in Spanish and in Eliot Weinberger's English translation. Eliot Weinberger completes the triad with his own mesostic on Paz and Cage. Cage responds to Paz with a mesostic in Spanish (here printed from Cage's handwriting in blue ink). The English translation, printed in red ink on translucent paper, overlays the Spanish and both may be viewed simultaneously. These are enclosed in orange printed wraps. Paz's poem is enclosed in wraps bearing a large portrait of Paz. The English text is woven through, and sometimes printed upon, full page images. There is a large portrait of Cage. In a dramatic tri-fold (about 40 inches) phone poles march across the landscape, their wires stretching into the horizon, reflecting the theme of Connections, and the spaces between.
