The Slippery Earth: Nahua-Christian Moral Diaglogue in Sixteenth-Century Mexico

Tucson: University of Arizona Press, 1989 xii+242+[1] pages with figures, illustrations, bibliography, glossary, appendix and index. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/4") issued in brown cloth with dark brown lettering to spine. 1st edition. When Mendicant friars converted the indigenous peoples of Mexico to Christianity in the years immediately following the Spanish conquest, they did so through the vehicle of moral dialogue. By learning the native Nahuatl language and studying Nahua (commonly called Aztec) cultre, these early missionaries translated catechistic texts into terms that would prove meaningful to new converts. Analysis of these texts reveals how Christianity was accommodated to Aztec though and how Mexican Catholicism itself was shaped by the intermingling of New and Old World concepts. Louise Burkhart shows how European Christian concepts like dualism - good vs evil - came to be expressed by indigenous peoples in terms of cosmic history, wherein an elaborate metaphysic of chaos (which rendered the Earth a "slippery" place) and order constituted not opposing but rather complementary forces. She fully explores this attempted introduction into Nahua ideology of Christian moral percepts - particularly the Christian concept of sin, for which there was no Nahua counterpart - and further shows how indigenous religion survived the Spanish conquest. After discussing the general methods employed by the missionaries, she considers the rhetoric used for conveying concepts of Christian cosmology, immorality, temperance, and illness, documenting the similarities and incongruities between Nahua and Christian concepts and logically arguing the consequences of such interactions. Over time, the friars managed to content themselves with an Indian Christianity that was less than orthodox, while the Nahuas were able to become sufficiently Christianized to survive in the new colonial milieu without compromising their own ideological and moral orientation. Burkhart documents this process in a work that challenges the notion of "spiritual conquest" and, in its use of Nahuatl texts, surpasses all previous efforts to map the new frontier between Nahua and Christian ideologies.Condition:Jacket spine sunned else a fine copy in a near fine jacket.

In the Matter of Peter Edward Rose, Manager, Cincinnati Reds Baseball Club: Report to the Commissioner (a.k.a. The Dowd Report)

New York: Office of the Commissioner Major League Baseball. May 9, 1989. First. First edition. Quarto. Plastic comb-bound photo duplicated pages with a clear plastic front cover, and card rear cover. 225pp. Handwritten copyright notice on the title leaf. A small chip and tear on the plastic front cover, page edges a bit thumbed, a near fine copy. The damning report prepared by attorney John Dowd for the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, which resulted in the lifetime ban of Pete Rose from Major League Baseball. This copy Inscribed by the Commissioner of Major League Baseball to a young attorney in Dowd's office: "To ---, Thank you for all your help -- Bart Giamatti." Purchased by us directly from an attorney, then working in Dowd's office, who reports that when Giamatti received the final report at Dowd's office, he promised to sign autographs for the staff, most of whom proffered baseballs. Our friend offered the report instead, the evidence of which we offer here. Apparently later generation copies of this report occasionally appear in the sports world signed by either Dowd or Rose, but we have not heard of another signed by Giamatti, who died less than four months later at the age of 51, only eight days after his final decision to ban Rose. Rare thus. .

In the Matter of Peter Edward Rose, Manager, Cincinnati Reds Baseball Club: Report to the Commissioner (a.k.a. The Dowd Report)

Office of the Commissioner Major League Baseball, New York 1989 - First edition. Rare thus. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
