River Book . [Mixed media book sculpture/object].

[Basia Irland/Sena Galleries East, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 1989]. - A (partially) standing, or hanging book object or mixed media book sculpture, created by artist Basia Irland in 1989. It consist of an old book that was found with a small group of others in a dry riverbed in the Southwest; these (unidentified) books had been water-soaked at one time & then puckered up while drying in the sun. They were found by Irland, who gathered them up & used them as the basis of her "River Book" sculptures; she coated each dried book in yellow beeswax by dipping & then added dribled wax to the surface, each book had first been tied with a sturdy but thin black cord which is provided with a loop, so the book can be hung against a wall or in other ways (although not fully free-standing, it could be mounted on a stand). Only a limited number of these were produced by Irland in 1989 & were featured in an exhibtion held around the same time at Sena Galleries East in Santa Fe. The object is not numbered or signed, but comes with a printed, illustrated 5 x 7" folder provided by Sena Galleries, that shows 4 photos of these book objects, with printed information on Irland on back & also, a photocopied, 3 page 8 1/2 x 11" fact sheet on Basia Irland provided by Sena Galleries. Size of the book object offered here is: 7 inches x 8 1/4 in. Best not hung in an extremely hot room or in direct sun, but one extra bonus, no matter where hung or displayed: the natural yellow beeswax diffuses a very fine & subtle perfume. Examples of this "edition" are now quite rare. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Smoke

San Francisco:: Edition of 90 + 10 proof copies,, 1989.. Limestone Press. 19 x 14"; 18 folios including title and colophon. 16 color diptych etchings. Text set in 12 pt. Bodoni monotype and handprinted on a flatbed press. Etchings and poems printed by Jill Livermore assisted by Yo Shimano onto Arches 280 gm paper. Housed in a cloth-covered clamshell box with paper title label. Signed by the artist and poet on the colophon. Smoke is a portfolio of sugarlift and spitbite aquatints by Joan Mitchell (1926 - 1992) accompanied by poems by Charles Hine . Joan Mitchell Foundation: "These 1988 prints were made specifically with the sugarlift process, which employs a mixture of sugar and ink as the drawing medium to create areas on the plate that will be then etched by an acid bath. The fluid sugarlift mixture makes it possible to create a brushlike mark as compared to intaglio etching, where the plate is cut into with a sharp tool. In addition to individual etchings, Limestone published Smoke, a limited edition book presenting Mitchell's sugarlift etchings in response to the poems of Charles Hine. Mitchell's illustrations for Smoke were made in direct response to Hine's poems." Jill Lerner: "Joan Mitchell was in residence in San Francisco for a week. I worked with her directly in making all copper plate etchings and printed both the intaglios and letterpress poems. She was a pistol, and an incredible artist. It was a great honor to work with her." Bill Berkson, Limestone Press: "Parallel to each other, the etchings and the poems together redouble a contemplative mood. Hine's strophes are succinct, each tending toward a specific nexus of statement. They announce the premises upon which Mitchell's headlong strokes expand and flourish. The subjects are elemental. The smudged whites of the plate tone allow for the 'air' that is the major site of imaginative activity in word and gesture alike. "Here we see Mitchell's graphic acumen celebrating itself. Where her recent big paintings let fly with color, the reductive surface and exquisite color choices within the etching process have led her to concentrate on figure/ground relations at their most compressed. Accordingly, her characteristic themes - tremors of identity in reflexive time, the complex nature of immediate sensation, feelings after visible fact (feelings that are then returned to an analogous visibility) - recur with a special definition and bite. These prints are the epigrams and aphorisms of an otherwise epic improviser, ample and songful as Mitchell's present mastery permits."

Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!" Adventures of a Curious Character.

NY: W. W. Norton & Co. 1989 - PRESENTATION COPY. 1 vol., eighth printing, inscribed on the title-page "To Don Roth / Richard Feynman", hardbound, with the priced DJ, VG+/VG, with the original scarce errata slip. An uncommonly interesting association, nicely recalling the first sparks of Feynman’s lifelong passion for figuring out ‘the way things work’. Don Roth (Donald J. Roth, 1931â€"2010) was Feynman’s first and closest neighbor in California: The two men shared a rented ‘duplex’ at 844/6 Alameda Street in Altadena from 1953 till 1960, when Feynman married Gweneth Howarth and moved to Boulder Drive. Roth was an appliance sales and repairman by trade; and Feynman, it will be remembered, had got his start in physics in much the same way â€" as a kid in Far Rockaway, repairing his neighbors’ radios and typewriters “by thinking”. They must have had a lot to talk about, this repairman and the gregarious genius next door; and the two men maintained a loose acquaintance long afterwards, as the present copy attests.
