        Smoke

San Francisco:: Edition of 90 + 10 proof copies,, 1989.. Limestone Press. 19 x 14"; 18 folios including title and colophon. 16 color diptych etchings. Text set in 12 pt. Bodoni monotype and handprinted on a flatbed press. Etchings and poems printed by Jill Livermore assisted by Yo Shimano onto Arches 280 gm paper. Housed in a cloth-covered clamshell box with paper title label. Signed by the artist and poet on the colophon. Smoke is a portfolio of sugarlift and spitbite aquatints by Joan Mitchell (1926 - 1992) accompanied by poems by Charles Hine . Joan Mitchell Foundation: "These 1988 prints were made specifically with the sugarlift process, which employs a mixture of sugar and ink as the drawing medium to create areas on the plate that will be then etched by an acid bath. The fluid sugarlift mixture makes it possible to create a brushlike mark as compared to intaglio etching, where the plate is cut into with a sharp tool. In addition to individual etchings, Limestone published Smoke, a limited edition book presenting Mitchell's sugarlift etchings in response to the poems of Charles Hine. Mitchell's illustrations for Smoke were made in direct response to Hine's poems." Jill Lerner: "Joan Mitchell was in residence in San Francisco for a week. I worked with her directly in making all copper plate etchings and printed both the intaglios and letterpress poems. She was a pistol, and an incredible artist. It was a great honor to work with her." Bill Berkson, Limestone Press: "Parallel to each other, the etchings and the poems together redouble a contemplative mood. Hine's strophes are succinct, each tending toward a specific nexus of statement. They announce the premises upon which Mitchell's headlong strokes expand and flourish. The subjects are elemental. The smudged whites of the plate tone allow for the 'air' that is the major site of imaginative activity in word and gesture alike. "Here we see Mitchell's graphic acumen celebrating itself. Where her recent big paintings let fly with color, the reductive surface and exquisite color choices within the etching process have led her to concentrate on figure/ground relations at their most compressed. Accordingly, her characteristic themes - tremors of identity in reflexive time, the complex nature of immediate sensation, feelings after visible fact (feelings that are then returned to an analogous visibility) - recur with a special definition and bite. These prints are the epigrams and aphorisms of an otherwise epic improviser, ample and songful as Mitchell's present mastery permits."

        Signed portrait photograph.

n.p., n.y. - 240 : 175 mm. Official German press photograph of the Chinese politician Zhao Ziyang together with German politician Ernst Albrecht. Signed by both on the recto. - As a senior government official, Zhao was critical of Maoist policies and instrumental in implementing free-market reforms, first in Sichuan, subsequently nationwide. He emerged on the national scene due to support from Deng Xiaoping after the Cultural Revolution. He also sought measures to streamline China's bureaucracy and fight corruption, issues that challenged the Party's legitimacy in the 1980s. Zhao Ziyang was also an advocate of the privatization of state-owned enterprises, the separation of the Party and the state, and general market economic reforms. Many of these views were shared by then-general secretary Hu Yaobang.[2]His economic reform policies and sympathies to student demonstrators during the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 placed him at odds with some members of the party leadership, including Premier Li Peng. Zhao also began to lose favour with paramount leader Deng Xiaoping. In the aftermath of the events, Zhao was purged politically and effectively placed under house arrest for the next 15 years. He died in Beijing in 2005, from a stroke, but because of his political fall from grace he was not given the funeral rites generally accorded to senior Chinese officials. His unofficial autobiography was published in English and in Chinese in 2009, but the details of his life remain censored inside mainland China. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

In the Matter of Peter Edward Rose, Manager, Cincinnati Reds Baseball Club: Report to the Commissioner (a k a The Dowd Report)

New York: Office of the Commissioner Major League Baseball. May 9, 1989. First. First edition. Quarto. Plastic comb-bound photo duplicated pages with a clear plastic front cover, and card rear cover. 225pp. Handwritten copyright notice on the title leaf. A small chip and tear on the plastic front cover, page edges a bit thumbed, a near fine copy. The damning report prepared by attorney John Dowd for the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, which resulted in the lifetime ban of Pete Rose from Major League Baseball. This copy Inscribed by the Commissioner of Major League Baseball to a young attorney in Dowd's office: "To ---, Thank you for all your help -- Bart Giamatti." Purchased by us directly from an attorney, then working in Dowd's office, who reports that when Giamatti received the final report at Dowd's office, he promised to sign autographs for the staff, most of whom proffered baseballs. Our friend offered the report instead, the evidence of which we offer here. Apparently later generation copies of this report occasionally appear in the sports world signed by either Dowd or Rose, but we have not heard of another signed by Giamatti, who died less than four months later at the age of 51, only eight days after his final decision to ban Rose. Rare thus. .

[Screenplays]: A Man Called Hawk: "White Poison" / "Poison"

Burbank, California: Warner Brothers Television. 1989. Five screenplays. Quartos. 58pp, 59pp., 60pp., 55pp., and 55pp., with two groups of additional revisions laid in of 15pp., and 4pp., respectively. Bradbound in red studio wrappers, each with various color sheets: white, blue, red, yellow, green, and "buff." Near fine with some light wear at the edges. A collections of five versions of the screenplay for the Spenser: For Hire spin-off television series, A Man Called Hawk, based on the Robert B. Parker character played by Avery Brooks. The scripts include: "First Draft" (1/27/89), "Final Draft" (2/9/89), "Revised Final Draft" (2/10/89), "2nd Revised Final Draft" (2/14/89), and another "2nd Revised Final Draft" with two separate groups of loose sheets laid in, each with additional changes (2/21/89 and 2/22/89). Together the scripts show the difficult development process that television scripts undergo and are particularly interesting in revealing Parker's involvement with this story penned along with his wife Joan. The episode, first titled "White Poison," was originally broadcast on March 25, 1989 as "Poison." Screenplays for Spenser: For Hire are available on the market, with copies written by Parker notably scarcer. We have seen no other screenplays of A Man Called Hawk, let alone several versions of the sole episode written by Parker. .
