        Waning Summer

Providence, Rhode Island:: Ziggurat Press,, 1989.. One-of-a-Kind. 9 x 13 x 1.75"; 16 unnumbered pages. Accordion structure. Six original pen-and-ink drawings by the artist. Titles in script by the artist. Tapa cloth-covered boards with tipped on title on front board. Housed in wooden slipcase with leather title on spine. Feldman's artwork accompanies the 1592 poem by British poet Thomas Nashe(1567 - 1601). The poem appears once handwritten in brown ink on a tipped in sheet of tan paper, which is a visual as well as textual element, and printed on a 6 x 9" laid in sheet of the same paper.Gloria Barone, "Walter Feldman: A Visual Profile" in Point in Time: Walter Feldman Selected Works (Providence, 2010): "Often Feldman's books require few or no words, although the works are never silent. When words are employed, poetry is the likely medium. Feldman's books have paid tribute to the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa and American poet Emily Dickinson by incorporating their verse into his work ... The work of poets and friends such as Edwin Honig, Michael Harper, Denise Levertov, James Schevill, and Barton Levi St. Armand also have found their way into Feldman's books. A personal one-of-a-kind work, Waning Summer, is bound in tapa cloth and features exquisite pen and ink drawings of trees near Feldman's country home interspersed with pages containing actual skins shed by a snake on the property that summer. Feldman's books raise provocative questions about what a book or cover is."

        Screenplay]: Sir Drone

      - Stapled photocopied pages of the handwritten manuscript used as a shooting script, and possibly as a continuity script. No cover sheet, possibly, or even probably, as issued. Quite worn around the edges, staples pulled through in a few instances, and the first and last leaves in danger of detaching, but a sound good copy. There are a few notes in an unknown hand (possibly Pettibon's) excising or emphasizing scenes, and handwritten numbers in the margins breaking the entire film into separate scenes. One of Pettibon's first films, one of four written and directed by him in 1989. According to the IMDB summary the film is about "[t]hree teenagers from the industrial part of Los Angeles [who] try to form a punk rock band in Hollywood." The film featured legendary punk and post-punk rock bass guitarist Mike Watt, and Pettibon also appeared in the film. Pettibon is a renowned artist and filmmaker. From the late 1970s through the mid-1980s, he was closely associated with the punk rock band Black Flag and the record label SST Records, both founded by his older brother Greg Ginn. Pettibon scripts are rare and ephemeral, probably not intended to have been preserved. Pettibon additionally performed with several bands, including Sur Drone. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Sydney: Brian Chester Imprime; Lord McAlpine, 1989. Number 212/1000. A new and improved edition of Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets by Francois de Vaillant 1753-1824. From the original two volumes in the collection of Lord McAlpine of West Green. Limited edition facsimile reprint. Green cloth covers with gilt titles to front and spine and an illustration on the front cover. With 158 glorious litho plates. A facsimile copy of a letter by the author, together with a flier from the publishers, is loose in the front in a card folder. The original French text, consisting of essays on the various parrots, is translated into English. The book consists of a modern introductory section (title pages, list of subscribers, foreword, introduction, publishers' notes, followed by the reprint and translation of the original two volume edition: dedication, preface, title page, then the glorious plates of the 139 parrots, then the 71 text pages of the first volume, then the 73 text pages of the second volume, index to each volume, then a modern ornithological commentary. Note that the plates are numbered 1 to 139 but many have an additional un-numbered plate/page showing a life-size illustration of the parrot's head, leading to the total number of 158 plates. A beautiful and fascinating book. Couple of miniscule marks to back cover, faint age yellowing to half title page, otherwise looks new. Numerous photographs available. 4kg packed weight.         Prayers and Things A Morning Prayer by Theodore PankratzSo Nimm Denn Meine Hande by Julie Katharine HausmannA Benediction Jude 1:24-25Five Aquatints by Teresa Pankratz

Chicago, Illinois:: Theodora Press,, 1989.. Edition of 6. 22.25 x 13.25 x 1.5?" closed, extends to 152"; 12 pages. Accordion fold. Five intaglio (aquatint) prints. Letterpress texts on Sakamoto lightweight using Garamond type with Caslon initials. Mounted on a fourteen panel museum board accordion structure, each panel edged with marbled paper. Bilingual text: German and English. Teresa Pankratz, colophon: "A Morning Prayer was my father's prayer at breakfast. I've taken the liberty of varying the lines as he did when using his prayer at times other than the breakfast table. A Benediction is paraphrased from the King James Version of the New Testament. Julie Katharina Hausmann wrote the text So Nimm Denn Meine Hande in 1862. It is probably better known in our 20th-century churches as words to the hymn Take Thou My Hand O Father. The five aquatints were completed in 1988 after my father's death in March of that year. "The book is dedicated to my father Theodore W. Pankratz (May 20, 1923 to March 27, 1988) who was himself a lover and keeper of things and whose prayers protected our lives." This is the first book by Pankratz created under the imprint Theodora Press.

Far more than a tribute to Edwin Sherbon Hills, this extremely rare volume is replete with scholarly text and seemingly countless graphic enhancements - maps, charts, tables, photographs, perspective sketches.         Fear of Spiders

Chicago:: Theodora Press,, 1989.. Edition of 10. 12 x 10" closed, 16?' 8?" fully extended (with covers); 18 pages. Accordion structure. Text letterpress printed in 18 point Caslon on Arches Cover. Ten aquatints printed on lightweight Sakamoto. Housed in black clamshell box (13.5 x 11.25 x 1.5") with decorative spider etching used for pastedowns. Interior and edges of clamshell box printed on Sakamoto lightweight paper. The aquatints, close-ups for the most part, suggest the immediacy of arachnophobia. The sharpness of focus both pinpoints the visceral fear and neutralizes it. Childhood terror recalled from the safety of adulthood? Art diffusing experience? Teresa Pankratz: "In a series of ten aquatints and accompanying text, this 'scary bedtime story' examines the titillating qualities of obsessive nighttime fears. Through the visual device of fluidly changing points of view, the reader moves through the darkened bedroom, alternately on the spider?'s hairy legs and from behind the child?'s fear-crazed eyes. As nocturnal imagination takes over, the text relates that: 'her fear and frenzy became her pleasure.' The child finds herself ?"becoming?" that which she fears most — and is unable to return to an untroubled sleep.

A Time to Kill

New York: Wynwood Press, 1989 First edition. One of 5,000 copies. Publisher's orange boards over maroon cloth, spine lettered in gilt; in the original maroon dust jacket designed by Susanne DeMarco, with an illustration of a scale holding a doll on one pan to the front panel, lettered in white and pale orange. Fine book; unclipped dust jacket, with a short closed tear to the front panel, minor creasing to the spine tail, else fine. Overall, an attractive and fresh copy of Grisham's first novel. Set in the fictional rural town of Clanton, Mississippi, A Time to Kill is a story about the trial of Carl Lee, an African-American man who murders two white men after they rape and beat his 10 year-old daughter. Grisham began writing A Time to Kill after witnessing a similar rape case in a Mississippi court and realizing that, if he were the father in the situation, he would be moved to seek retribution - a feeling which the character Carl Lee takes action upon. In a 2009 interview with USA Today, Grisham remarked, "'When I started writing in the fall of '84, I had no idea what I was doing, but I was motivated for all of the right reasons…I had a story to tell and I wanted to see whether I could tell it.'" Grisham was able to complete the novel while maintain his job as a practicing attorney, but it was initially rejected by several publishers before finally being picked up by Wynwood. Of the 5,000 copies of the first edition, Grisham purchased 1,000 copies, which he personally sold at local bookstores and libraries on a self-made book tour around Mississippi. After Grisham's subsequent novels established his literary reputation, public interest in A Time to Kill was renewed and it was eventually reprinted, ultimately becoming a bestseller.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.
