THE NATURAL HISTORY OF PARROTS Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets

Brian Chester Imprime; Lord McAlpine, 1989, Cloth, Book Condition: Near Fine, Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, NumberedSize: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall, Number 212/1000. A new and improved edition of Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets by Francois de Vaillant 1753-1824. From the original two volumes in the collection of Lord McAlpine of West Green. Limited edition facsimile reprint. Green cloth covers with gilt titles to front and spine and an illustration on the front cover. With 158 glorious litho plates. This is the single volume version, limited to 1000 copies, and smaller (just 3kg) than the more expensive ($15000 to $20000 to subscribers) two volume 16kg version! A facsimile copy of a letter by the author, together with a flier from the publishers, is loose in the front in a card folder. The original French text, consisting of essays on the various parrots, is translated into English. The book consists of a modern introductory section (title pages, list of subscribers, foreword, introduction, publishers' notes, followed by the reprint and translation of the original two volume edition: dedication, preface, title page, then the glorious plates of the 139 parrots, then the 71 text pages of the first volume, then the 73 text pages of the second volume, index to each volume, then a modern ornithological commentary. Note that the plates are numbered 1 to 139 but many have an additional un-numbered plate/page showing a life-size illustration of the parrot's head, leading to the total number of 158 plates. A beautiful and fascinating book. Couple of miniscule marks to back cover, faint age yellowing to half title page, otherwise looks new. Numerous photographs available. 4kg packed weight. Overweight, extra postage may be required outside Australia.

        A Time to Kill

New York: Wynwood Press, 1989 First edition. One of 5,000 copies. Publisher's orange boards over maroon cloth, spine lettered in gilt; in the original maroon dust jacket designed by Susanne DeMarco, with an illustration of a scale holding a doll on one pan to the front panel, lettered in white and pale orange. Fine book; unclipped dust jacket, with a short closed tear to the front panel, minor creasing to the spine tail, else fine. Overall, an attractive and fresh copy of Grisham's first novel. Set in the fictional rural town of Clanton, Mississippi, A Time to Kill is a story about the trial of Carl Lee, an African-American man who murders two white men after they rape and beat his 10 year-old daughter. Grisham began writing A Time to Kill after witnessing a similar rape case in a Mississippi court and realizing that, if he were the father in the situation, he would be moved to seek retribution - a feeling which the character Carl Lee takes action upon. In a 2009 interview with USA Today, Grisham remarked, "'When I started writing in the fall of '84, I had no idea what I was doing, but I was motivated for all of the right reasons…I had a story to tell and I wanted to see whether I could tell it.'" Grisham was able to complete the novel while maintain his job as a practicing attorney, but it was initially rejected by several publishers before finally being picked up by Wynwood. Of the 5,000 copies of the first edition, Grisham purchased 1,000 copies, which he personally sold at local bookstores and libraries on a self-made book tour around Mississippi. After Grisham's subsequent novels established his literary reputation, public interest in A Time to Kill was renewed and it was eventually reprinted, ultimately becoming a bestseller.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

        MY PRETTY PONY

Whitney Museum [1989], New York - First edition. 1/250 non-numbered copies [of a total edition of 280 copies, the remaining 30 copies being author/artist contributor copies numbered in Roman Numerals] signed by both Stephen King and Barbara Kruger on the signature/limitation/colophon page at the rear of the book. Very oversize [roughly 14" x 21"] and quite heavy volume, red leather spine with solid metal faced "boards" binding [which, ideally, should only be handled with gloved hands to avoid marring the brushed finish with fingerprints], with a battery-operated clock inset as part of the front cover [battery no longer operational, as planned, although it could be replaced if one so chose]. NB: This book was not issued in, nor is this copy accompanied by, the double-tray drop spine box [traycase] that was optionally available for separate purchase through BookLab. At least two variants of the traycase have been reported, but neither of them originally came with the book, although some unreported number were purchased and over time "married" to copies of the book by their respective owners. Fine copy [unread with the inter-page protective tissue inserts still in place] [with the usual light fingerprint marks to the brushed-finish metal boards from not always being handled with gloved hands] [not issued in Dust Wrapper] [enclosed inside of a clear plastic bag, which is still present with this copy] inside the original mailing carton. The same marbled endpapers are used on the boards, with an overlay of copper on the front board, and grey leather on the back board and hinged spine. Epigone Press: "This unconventional travel guide to America chronicles the experience of an artist on the road described through 26 woodcut prints. The prints range from events like a rodeo and happy hour, to Chicago on the day of the stock crash of 1987, to a jazz club in New York and a wrecking yard in Jamaica Queens, along the way it includes murders, car wrecks, and homecoming parades. Over the nine month period that the artist traveled around the country he camped in snow storms, and in swamps, worked as a janitor, and cut the wood blocks that make up this book." Judith A. Hoffberg, Umbrella, June 1994, Vol. 17 No. 2: "There is a nervousness to his line to generate the energy that America represents, and (the) reflection of the workers of America...makes this book surge with vitality and electricity ...Whether voyeur or witness, Hazelwood's eye is right on!
