THREE ITEMS RELATING TO THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN JOHN CAGE AND GLENN BRANCA: "INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPOSING A LOOP FOR THE ?ROZART MIX,? 1989; A MEMO FROM CAGE, 1989; CD INCLUDING ?CAGE?S FOLLY? (AN INTERVIEW)

Memo 8 1/2 x 7 inches, signed by Cage; 2-page "Rozart Mix" instruction letter from Gramavision, 8 1/2 x 11. CD, signed by Branca (not pictured). All good, yellowed edges to letter only. The day after seeing a performance of Branca?s "Indeterminate Activity of Resultant Masses" at New Music America in Chicago in 1982, John Cage gave a remarkably critical interview of the piece: "Last night I really didn?t enjoy the Branca piece. What seemed negative to me were the political implications...what I see in Branca as in Wagner is a sustained climax." Branca was shocked at the negative attention: "As a young composer, to be singled out in such a manner by Cage was shocking. My show had received what seemed like a ten-minute standing ovation from virtually the entire audience of 1200 people." Cage eventually revised his opinion but it was his initial impressions that circulated throughout the media. Several years later, Branca was invited to contribute a loop to a redux of Cage?s ROZART MIX, a project organized by the Merce Cunningham Dance Company to honor Cage. Branca never forgot the 1982 interview, however, and contributed a remix of it for the ROZART MIX. Included here is the invitation for the ROZART MIX (other musicians who agreed to contribute loops were Laurie Anderson, William S. Burroughs, and Brian Eno.) Also present is a memo from Cage thanking Branca for his contribution. The CD here (2005) includes the original criticized piece and audio of the Cage interview . It also includes Branca?s thoughts on the whole matter (as first appeared in MUSICWORKS magazine in 1997).

WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS: L'ARTE NAGUAL (NAGUAL ART) - INSCRIBED BY BURROUGHS TO DAVID HOCKNEY

Rome: Cleto Polcina, 1989. First Edition. First Printing, one of 1,500 copies. Square quarto; light brown wrappers, with titles printed in navy blue and burgundy on spine and front panel; [44pp]; illus; text is in Italian and English. Inscribed by Burroughs to the artist David Hockney several pages in: "To David Hockney, Light use could precipitate the Stendhal-Syndrome, William S. Burroughs, July 22, 1989 / Naropa." Single closed tear at the right edge of the front cover, else Near Fine. An Italian exhibition catalogue for a collection of Burrough's shotgun art and collages from the October and Tony Shafrazy Galleries. The catalogue highlights 15 pieces of Burroughs' artwork, containing both full-color and black and white plates. In his essay contained within the catalogue, Burroughs explains that the title is derived from a concept found within the Carlos Casteneda books, where Don Juan makes a distinction between the "tonal" universe and the "nagual." The "tonal" universe is the everyday cause-and-effect universe, which is predictable because it is pre-recorded. The "nagual" is the unknown, the unpredictable, the uncontrollable. Burroughs' artwork, much like his writing, reflects that unpredictable and uncontrollable style. He made use of his rifle as a medium to transform his paintings, attacking wooden surfaces with little bombs and explosions of color. An uncommon and elusive Burroughs item, with a superb association between two prominent and influential artists.

SOCIÉTÉ PARADISIAQUE: OU LE REVE HÉLATEUR D';UN HYPERGRAPHE SENSIBLE.|LA

Paris: L'Inéditeur, 1989. cloth portfolios. folio. cloth portfolios. Unpaginaged. 5 volumes. This set is one of an edition of 10 numbered copies in a total edition of 21 copies. 25 Original photographs by Albert Dupont. Preface by Isidore Isou. Contains 25 original photographs handcolored and worked by Dupont on Arches paper. All signed by Dupont. Each volume contains 5 photographs illustrating texts and manifests of Dupont. Volumes also contain a small camera, binoculars, compass, hologram and various assorted items all in their own folders. Each portfolio is in a different colored board folder red, cerise, yellow, blue and green. Each slipcase has a portion of the title on the spine and is in the same colors as the portfolio boards, but not the matching portfolio, so the effect is even more vibrant. This title comes from a new concept in the social and economic field of the Lettrist Group, which aims at an ideal society based only upon creation and innovation as major values of society, instead of our actual society; ethos based upon work and collectivity, whether in socialism or for profit. In this major work Dupont is expressing his wish fulfillment for his ideal society La Societé Parodisiaque. The volumes contain photography, lettrist, hypergraphic (with signs) infinitesimal (based upon imagination), and the supertemporal (public participation) all explained and shown by different statements of Dupont. The 25 photographs have titles which are either word play or poetic names used for different artists whom Dupont admires, such as The magnetic field André Breton, Eros vertigo Matta, and erotic book without orthograph Arthur Rimbaud, and others. The preface is by Isidore Isou who is the founder of Lettrism. Dupont wanted every photograph to be different and innovative to express his own style and they include drawings, jokes, mystery, manipulation, new materials, objects, letters, codes, signs, light, sound, hologram, kaleidoscope and also of course fun in the style of Man Ray, whom he considers as a reference as photographer and creative artist.

HOLLYWOOD - INSCRIBED TO RED & MINA STODOLSKY

Santa Rosa: Black Sparrow Press, 1989. First Trade Edition. One of 900 hardcover copies published (not 1,000 as stated in the colophon). Octavo; 3/4 white paper-covered boards reproducing a painting by John Register, with a white cloth backstrip and printed title label applied to spine; original acetate dustjacket; 239pp, [4]. Inscribed on the front endpaper, with a small original drawing beneath the inscription: For Mina and Red - I'm still here and I'm glad you are too. Yeah. Hank Charles Bukowski." Just short of being Fine, with a hint of toning to board edges and mild handling to lower third of backstrip, in a lightly rubbed acetate jacket. Bukowski's novel based on his experiences making the film 'Barfly,' filmed by Barbet Schroeder in 1987. This copy bears a warm, personal inscription to Mina and Sholom "Red" Stodolsky, who operated the Baroque Bookstore in Hollywood, CA from 1972 until his death in 1998. Red was a close friend of Bukowski's, and a great champion of his work, stocking his books in the Hollywood shop and hosting poetry readings and signings. As a sign of respect and affection, Bukowski immortalized his friend in the poem "Red" (1989) and in his novel "Pulp" (1994). A wonderful association. Krumhansl 112b.

THE BIRDS OF AUSTRALIA Volume V (five) (Parrots and Pigeons)

Melbourne: Hill House, 1989. Limited facsimile edition, (this copy stamped no. 543 to the front paste-down). Original green Japanese Saifu cloth gilt; pp. [iv], plus 92 fine coloured plates with accompanying text. One of series of remarkably exact same-size facsimile of the original in the British Library, printed by offset lithography on acid-free matt art paper and hand-bound. The Hill House series contained the only authentic full-size facsimiles of the works of John Gould - this volume is one of the original printings and now out of print. Binding, unmarked. A . Publisher's blurb thus "They are not reproductions, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the B.M.(N.H.) originals. Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. gilt stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Each copy is hand inspected by the printer's quality control officer, individually numbered on the inside front board. Thus, no two copies are exactly the same. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies, later production runs have not exceeded 300 for world-wide sale. This has been caused by a relative shortage of quality paper, together with the intensive hand-labour involved in their production." This book is held in stock.. Facsimile Edition. Hardcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket. Elephant Folio.

        Drawn Blank Series [Signed]

Washington Green Fine art in association with Black Buffalo Artworks, Printed by GTZ Fine Art Editions, New York. 2008, 2008. LIMITED EDITION COLLECTION by Bob Dylan. This is the Limited Edition Graphics Standard Box set, comprising ten fine gallery quality colour prints of Gilclee on Museum Etching 350gsm paper, each print SIGNED by the artist. One of 295 numbered sets (a few out of series proofs also exist but were not commercially released.) Image size 21.5 x 16 inches, paper size 27.5 x 22 inches. Each of the graphics is supplied in individual bespoke, hand-made presentation wallets, and are encased in a presentation box. With accompanying 'Drawn Blank' series paperwork. Absolutely fine/ as new. Dylan's autograph is notoriously difficult to obtain, and many secretarial examples and fakes abound- obviously these signatures are guaranteed as part of an official numbered release. Whilst travelling on tour between 1989 and 1992, Bob Dylan created a collection of drawings that were published in a book entitled 'Drawn Blank' in 1994. These expressive works capture Dylan's chance encounters and observations. The creation of these portraits, interiors, landscapes, still lifes, nudes and street scenes were done to "relax and refocus a restless mind". Following a major exhibition in London in 2008, the prints were offered for sale as both individual graphics, a portfolio of three, a medium box of six, a standard box of ten, or a deluxe set of twenty-nine images. All formats were quickly sold out- such was the popularity of this collection that is was re-printed in 2009 as individual prints or collected as a set of eight, and it was again reprinted individually in 2010. This is a rare opportunity to obtain one of the original and more substantial collections from 2008.

THE FIRST BOOK OF MOSES, CALLED GENESIS. THE KING JAMES VERSION

Limited Editions Club, New York 1989 - Large folio bound in full midnight blue Japanese cotton. Copy #249 of only 400 numbered copies, SIGNED on the colophon by Jacob Lawrence who has contributed 8 original silkscreens to this massive (16" x 22") and truly magnificent work, one of the high points of the press. These silkscreens are identical, except for not being individually signed, to the very few portfolios of eight prints currently selling for upwards of fifty thousand dollars. According to the publisher, anywhere from 17 to 21 screens were required to bring out the coloring of each illustration, making a total of 144 separate stencils, all of which were destroyed after the strictly limited number of some 400 original sets of prints had been achieved on the fine Whatman paper specified by the Osiris Printing Studio in New York. The text was printed on a heavy handmade paper from Cartiere Enrico Magnani of Pescia, Italy. Monthly Letter laid in. A gorgeous book. The clamshell box has a few small bumps and frayed spots; the book is as new. Fine in a Near Fine suede-lined linen clamshell box with leather label [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Danza di Venere, pastorale...

In 8vo (cm 14,3); pergamena rigida recente, taglio colorato antico; pp. (16), 126, (2). Con le armi dei Farnese sul titolo. Ottima copia.PRIMA EDIZIONE. M. Bregoli Russo, Renaissance Italian Theater. Joseph Regenstein Library of the University of Chicago, Firenze, 1984, p. 102, nr. 352. Puggioni, op. cit., p. 37. Clubb, 525. \
