STEWART JAMES IN PRINT: The First Fifty Years

Toronto: Jogestja Ltd.. 1989. 1st edition. hb. Heavy 4to, pp. xxxi, 991. ISBN 0969417403 . James (1908-1996) was one of the world's most prolific inventors of magic tricks and routines. Born in Canada, he was the author of "One More Thought on Cards", the three volumes of "Abbott's Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks", and numerous articles. This copy of his catalogue raisonne was purchased by us from a prominent CBC Radio personality who, in turn, had been given it by the late national broadcaster Peter Gzowski. The book was given to Gzowski by James on the occasion of the former's interview of the latter on his national radio program. James, who was quite elderly at the time, inscribed this copy "To Preter [sic] from Stewart" and gave it to him after the interview concluded. It is a massive book describing in detail over 400 tricks and routines James published or marketed over a fifty-year span. Each trick is prefaced by a fascinating introduction. Ourcopy shows insignificant shelf wear and is unmarked and save for a few faint spots on the foredge of the text block. The dust jacket is present and has light wear, mainly confined to rubbing at the folds and spine ends. .

        In Memoriam Felis Felis

(Leamington Spa): Sixth Chamber Press. (1989). First. First edition. Six illustrations by R.B. Kitaj. Quarter cloth and papercovered boards. Fine in a lightly rubbed, near fine illustrated slipcase. This conforms to the 1/26 lettered copies but is unlettered and Signed by both Updike and Kitaj, presumably this is one of an additional six copies so bound and reserved for the publisher. Inscribed by Updike to Herb Yellin: "for Herb, Kitaj's work is for the birds but maybe it all goes together. Best, John." Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike "...liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association. .
