John Updike
Published by Andre Deutsch (London 1988). First British edition. Of an edition of 97 copies, this is a signed but unnumbered copy of the issue of 75, bound in marbled paper-covered sides and leather backstrip, in a slipcase of the same marbled design as the book sides. Issued without dust jacket. 244 pp. Unread. The leather was originally dark green, but, as often happens with green leather, exposure to light and/or air has turned the spine to dark brown. As is common with this edition, the book and slipcase are very slightly worn at some corners. That being the case, I consider both book and slipcase Brand new. S. is the story of Sarah P. Worth, a thoroughly modern spiritual seeker who has become enamored of a Hindu mystic called the Arhat. A native New Englander, she goes west to join his ashram in Arizona, and there struggles alongside fellow sannyasins (pilgrims) in the difficult attempt to subdue ego and achieve moksha (salvation, release from illusion). S. details her adventures in letters and tapes dispatched to her husband, her daughter, her brother, her dentist, her hairdresser, and her psychiatrist - messages designed to keep her old world in order while she is creating for herself a new one. This is Hester Prynne's side of the triangle described by Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter; it is also a burlesque of the quest for enlightenment, and an affectionate meditation on American womanhood. As the only Updike limited ever published by his British publisher, this is both scarce and unusual. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Rare Signing by Edwin Abbey of this Edition (Abbey died within 1 year of signing) 20th Anniversary Edition - 1988 Preface by Abbey Added to 20th Anniversary Edition Free Shipping Dust Jacket Now Protected by a Brodart Cover Please see pictures for more information and detail Desert Solitaire, Abbey's fourth book and first non-fiction work, was published in 1968. In it, he describes his stay in the canyon lands of southeastern Utah from 1956-1957. Desert Solitaire is regarded as one of the finest nature narratives in American literature, and has been compared to Aldo Leopold's A Sand County Almanac and Thoreau's Walden. In it, Abbey vividly describes the physical landscapes of southern Utah and delights in his isolation as a back country park ranger, recounting adventures in the nearby canyon country and mountains. He also attacks what he terms the "industrial tourism" and resulting development in the national parks ("national parking lots"), rails against the Glen Canyon Dam, and comments on various other subjects. (See Wikipedia for more information) *****The book is in excellent condition especially for its age. There is a previous owner's inscription opposite title page.Very light bumping to corners. A very rare misprint of Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time from 1988. This recalled edition contains no contents page, a lack of dedication, alternate colour schemes, and a differently designed interior. This edition was edited and revised by a conscientious reader that noticed the flaws in the book and has some markings inside. It also contains historical news print items heralding its release, given a bit of a time capsule to the piece. The rare edition is encased in Mylar for protection, whilst the corrected first edition is not.The Binding is good, the dust jacket has some relative wear, but is in overall good condition. Both of these editions are quite difficult to track down, but together, they are a gorgeous reminder of Stephen Hawking's initial foray into mainstream media and popular science. This is a rare recalled edition of Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time, his seminal popular science work published in 1988. This edition in a light blue silver lacks a dedication to Jane, has numerous typographical errors, and is formatted differently. The edition in question was owned by an enthusiast, and it contains brief snippets of topical newspaper clippings to celebrate its release as well as small portions of highlighting on only a handful of pages. The rare light blue edition was quickly recalled and there are estimated to be less than 100 that survived the purge of these failed variations. The corrected edition in dark blue is a first printing, first edition of the corrected variation. It has a tight binding, is clean of marks, and is the inevitable corre … [Click Below for Full Description]

CROWLEY, Aleister; introduction by Israel Regardie (signed by Regardie).
Thelema Publications, Kings Beach, CA, 1988. Hardcover. Tall octavo. (6 3/4 x 11 1/4inches). Approx. 100 leaves (printed on one side only) Blue binder's cloth, with elaborate gilt titling etc. to front board and spine. A publisher's "mock-up" or trial copy produced by Thelema Publications, the publishing company of Helen Parsons Smith (1910 - 2003), ex-wife of Jack Parsons and widow of W. T. Smith, and long time member of Agape Lodge of the O.T.O. When planning the publication of "Amrita," Helen solicited Introductions from a number of individuals: Israel Regardie, Mark Aguiar, William Breeze, Martin P. Starr and Lon DuQuette, however, when the book went to press she only used that provided by Martin Starr, along with her own Foreword. This volume - originally from the archives of Helen Parsons Smith / Thelema publications - is a typescript mock up of a version of the book which never went to press. It comprises a 13 page typescript introduction by Regardie (still unpublished) SIGNED by him at the end. There is also loosely inserted, a typesheet of a trial sheet of the final page of the Introduction, also SIGNED by Regardie. The rest of the volume comprises the text of Crowley's "Amrita" There are numerous small differences between the text here given and the published version. Most notably the typescript includes a four page 'Record of Experiments' undertaken by Crowley at the Savoy Hotel in London, not in the published version, but omits the penultimate chapter 'It' and the final chapter 'On Food' that version contains. Stephen King and many others
1988. From Kirkus Reviews: Mammoth-sized roundup of the 60 best dark-fiction entries in the first 25 issues of Cemetery Dance magazine--a quarterly devoted to works of particularly dark horror, and one distinguished by the quality of its contents. Four of the stories have previously been reprinted in hardcover (including Stephen King's ``Chattery Teeth,'' one of his most amusing, and oddest, tales), though all the fiction first appeared in Cemetery Dance. The tastiest big-ticket item is an interview with Dean Koontz, done for this collection by Robert Morrish, in which Koontz reveals some secrets of his trade--such as deciding to junk Freudian determinism in favor of free will in his fiction--and admits to rewriting the embarrassingly atrocious Demon Seed (which was done in his 20s) for its latest softcover reprint. Morrish also interviews Chizmar about the birth of Cemetery Dance, first published in 1988, and about the problems encountered in bringing out an admittedly esoteric quarterly. As for the stories, standouts include two tales by Peter Crowther, ``Rustle'' (a dreamy doorway leads to some rustling, sibilant, never defined but very hungry ``things'') and ``Eater'' (a necrophage keeps his freezer well stocked with human parts). Also tops are Poppy Z. Brite's stylish ``A Taste of Blood and Altars'' (vampires on sultry spring nights in New Orleans, an excerpt from Brite's knockout first novel Lost Souls), and William F. Nolan's ``Fyodor's Law'' (Raskolnikov's truly extraordinary man, unbound by conventional moral standards, comes to Los Angeles as a wealthy photographe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stephen King
1988. Condition: Acceptable. The Dark Tower, Vol. 1, The Gunslinger. Published by Sphere Books, London, 1988. 1st Sphere Books paperback edition. 224 pages, illustrated. Picked this fall from a midcoast Maine flea market, this is a rarely seen, warmly inscribed Stephen King item, to his friend Howard, dated 1989. The inscription, on the title page, states For Howard- I Love You, Man! Stay Clean, Stephen King, 2/15/89. I see a fair amount of the usual signed Stephen King trade books here in Maine but very rarely do I encounter a 'local' copy so warmly inscribed to a friend. Looks like Howard might have had some substance use problems potentially. In any event, how can you beat "I love you, Man!" as an inscription!! Good condition.
