Gordon Murray was a British television producer and puppeteer. He wrote and produced some of the most popular children's television programs aired in the United Kingdom. After retiring from television in 1982, Gordon produced and distributed more than sixty limited-edition miniature books under the Silver Thimble Books imprint. Bound entirely by hand, they contained watercolor paintings, special covers and bindings, and slip cases. After 1987, Murray began to tire of the run sizes and the amount of work involved in printing letter press, and began to emphasize hand-made editions, including original handwritten texts accompanied by original watercolor illustrations. Gordon Murray's miniature books are some of the best artist's miniature books of the twentieth century.

        Freeze; Modern Medicine; Gambler.

London: [no publisher],, 1988 & 1990. 3 works, quarto. Original bronze, blue, and black wrappers, titles to front cover in blue, orange, and white respectively. Illustrated throughout. Extremely minor creasing to wrappers, wrappers of Modern Medicine a touch sunned to the edges. An excellent set. First editions, first impressions; Gambler from a limited edition of 500. The books were released to accompany three exhibitions of the same titles. Freeze was held by Hirst in collaboration with other students from Goldsmith College, and became the inaugural showing of the YBA (Young British Artists). Sixteen students exhibited in the show in an empty London Port Authority building at Surrey Docks, July 1988. These included Hirst, Steven Adamson, Angela Bulloch, Mat Collishaw, Ian Davenport, Angus Fairhurst, Anya Gallaccio, Gary Hume, Michael Landy, Abigail Lane, Sarah Lucas, Lala Meredith-Vula, Richard Patterson, Simon Patterson, Stephen Park and Fiona Rae. Dominic Denis was listed in the catalogue but did not show work. The other two exhibitions were conceived and co-curated with Billee Sellmann and Carl Freedman, both held at Building One, a disused biscuit factory in Bermondsey, in 1990. The artists featured were Hirst himself, Mat Collishaw, Grainne Cullen, Dominic Denis, Angus Fairhurst, Abigail Lane, Miriam Lloyd, and Craig Wood. Again with Sellmann and Freedman, Hirst followed the success of Modern Medicine with Gambler, which featured Hirst, Dan Bonsall, Dominic Denis, Steve di Benedetto, Angus Fairhurst, Tim Head, and Michael Scott.

241 pp. + 22 tav. in b / n ft, II voll. 120 pp. + 5 tav. in b / n ft

Archive of 3 typed letters signed to his publisher's representative at Coronet, Peter Straus, circa 1987-1988

N.p.: N.p., 1988. An archive of 3 typed letters signed by British crime fiction author Ian Rankin to his first paperback publisher, Peter Straus at Coronet Books, regarding three early books: "Knots and Crosses," "Watchman," and "Westwind." Three letters that reveal a progression of enthusiasm and planning from the young author that is difficult not to love. The first letter, dated May 20, 1987, is in response to Coronet's acceptance of Rankin's first John Rebus novel, "Knots and Crosses," for paperback publication. Rankin's enthusiasm is palpable, and he excitedly notes that he has just finished reading the Coronet edition of John le Carre's "A Perfect Spy," and that his next novel to be published in hardcover, "Watchman," may contain blurbs by Coronet authors Chapman Pincher and Nigel West. The second letter, dated June 8, 1987 (a month after the first), contains a typed summary of effusive reviews on Rankin's work, assembled by the author to send to Coronet. He mentions that "Watchman" has found a hardcover publisher, and describes the plot of "Westwind" (though he had not yet come up with that title), and ends with his typical humor, "I do hope the thought of reading more Ian Rankin novels doesn't fill you with horror." The third letter, dated March 11, 1988 (about 9 months later), congratulates Mr. Straus on having landed a new position with Hamish Hamilton. He goes on to mention that "Knots and Crosses" is slated to launch the new Coronet Crime series imprint under the auspices of Hodder and Stoughton, and that Leslie Grantham (of the series "EastEnders") has bought the screen option for same. A terrific grouping of three letters from a young author who shows an enthusiasm and aggression that no doubt played a part in his eventual position as one of the best selling authors in England, and the world. 8.5 x 11 inches, Near Fine.

The story of only 338 words focuses on a young boy named Max who, after dressing in his wolf costume, wreaks such havoc through his household that he is sent to bed without his supper. Max's bedroom undergoes a mysterious transformation into a jungle environment, and he winds up sailing to an island inhabited by malicious beasts known as the "Wild Things." After successfully intimidating the creatures, Max is hailed as the king of the Wild Things and enjoys a playful romp with his subjects; however, he decides to return home, to the Wild Things' dismay. After arriving in his bedroom, Max discovers a hot supper waiting for him.The book has been adapted into other media several times, including an animated short in 1974 (with an updated version in 1988); a 1980 opera; and a live-action 2009 feature-film adaptation, directed by Spike Jonze. The book had sold over nineteen million copies worldwide as of 2009, with ten million of those being in the United States.Sendak won the annual Caldecott Medal from the children's librarians in 1964, recognizing Wild Things as the previous year's "most distinguished American picture book for children". It was voted the number one picture book in a 2012 survey of School Library Journal readers, not for the first time. This 25th Anniversary edition had the color reproductions done to Maurice Sendak's exact specifications.

On the Marionette Theater of Heinrich von Kleist

Poestenkill, NY: Edition Kaldewey, 1988. Cohen, Elaine Lustig. Quarto. (24)pp. First edition. One of 45 copies. Signed by Elaine Lustig Cohen, who designed the book and who illustrated the text with two full-page woodcuts, and six woodcut ornaments. Contains the original text by Kleist in English and German, and Arthur Cohen's essay fragment on Kleist. Cohen, who is best-known as a Jewish scholar, passed away while this book was in production. The essay fragment is perhaps most notable for the observation that at no point in his text does Kleist refer to the "marionette manipulator." Properly speaking, then, Cohen concludes that Kleist's essay should have been titled "über die Marionetten." Printed in black and red, much of Elaine Lustig Cohen's bold design hearkens to early 20th-century European avant-garde typography. Bound in black paper over boards with a relief print on the upper cover designed by Elaine Lustig Cohen. A very fine copy.

The Birds of New Guinea and the Adjacent Papuan Islands, including many new species recently discovered in Australia . Vol. I (Birds of Paradise, Crows)

Originally published 1875-1888. pp. vi, 56 fine colour plates with accompanying text pages. 'The volumes in this series are not mere reproductions. They are exact facsimiles of originals held in the Libraries of the British Museum (Natural History) in London and Tring. They are not reproductions, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the B.M.(N.H.) originals. Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. boards covered in special Japanese Saifu cloth, gold stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies, later production runs have not exceeded 300'
