        PHOTOGRAPH ***Signed***

1988 - Inscribed "William A Fowler / Pasadena, CA / Sept 9, 1988" in black ink. This 8.0" X 10.0" black and white glossy photograph is in fine condition. William Fowler, in full William Alfred Fowler (born August 9, 1911, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S.¿died March 14, 1995, Pasadena, California) American nuclear astrophysicist who, with Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1983 for his role in formulating a widely accepted theory of element generation. Fowler studied at the Ohio State University (B.S., 1933) and at the California Institute of Technology (Ph.D., 1936), where he became an assistant professor in 1939 and a full professor in 1946. His theory of element generation, which he developed with Sir Fred Hoyle, Margaret Burbidge, and Geoffrey Burbidge in the 1950s, suggests that in stellar evolution elements are synthesized progressively from light elements to heavy ones, in nuclear reactions that also produce light and heat. With the collapse of more massive stars, the explosive rebound known as supernova occurs; according to theory, this phase makes possible the synthesis of the heaviest elements. Fowler also worked in radio astronomy, proposing with Hoyle that the cores of radio galaxies are collapsed ¿superstars¿ emitting strong radio waves and that quasars are larger versions of these collapsed superstars. Fowler received the National Medal of Science (1974) and the Legion of Honour (1989). [Attributes: Signed Copy]

(Queensland): University of Queensland Press, (1988). (Queensland): University of Queensland Press. (1988). The uncorrected proof copy of the true first edition (Australian) of Carey's first Booker Prize-winning novel. Signed by the author. Based on the size of the Australian publishing industry, as compared to that of the UK and the US, the original Australian first editions of Carey's books, especially those published by University of Queensland, a relatively small Australian publisher, are relatively uncommon. Proofs, because of their much more limited quantities to begin with, are even more scarce. Despite our focusing on proofs as a specialty, we've only handled the proof of this edition once previously, and have never handled a signed copy before. Vertical spine creasing; age-toning to pages; very good in wrappers. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good.

        Pheasant Drawings

Kingston Upon Hull - Allen, 1988 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A limited edition of this beautiful collection of the famous natural history illustrators, signed by the editor David Lank. With paper binding not the hard cover normally issued and therefore we think a proof copy. Signed as usual. Joseph Wolf was German, but moved to the British museum in 1848. He worked for many of the 19th century's explorers and naturalists, including David Livingstone, Alfred Russell Wallace, and Henry Walter Bates. He is thought of as having established wildlife art as a genre, andhe is known particularly for his illustrations of birds. This volume presents his many sketches and drawings of pheasants. Each plate has accompanying notes, written by David Lank. These notes include information on taxonomy as well as notes on the drawings themselves. This is a unique and large collection of the works of a man that Sir Edwin Landseer called, without exception, the greatest all-round animal artist that ever lived. Collated: complete. Condition: Disbound. Likely to be a proof copy. Externally smart, with a little wear to the extremities. The text block is generally clean and bright throughout, and is itself firmly bound. Overall VERY GOOD INDEED.

Typed Letter Signed, 2 separate pages on her personalized address stationery, Nyack-on-Hudson, October 30, 1961. With transmittal envelope

McCullers writes to Paul Bigelow, a close friend and friend of her cousin Jordon Massee. McCullers and Bigelow were both friends with many writers, but especially Tennessee Williams.  The "New York Times" obituary of Bigelow on May 27, 1988, states that he was a theater consultant and editor. In Tennessee Williams' "Notebooks," Williams cites a friend's description of Bigelow. "Paul could tell marvelous stories about the world of arts and letters in which he apparently knew almost everyone… an air of… mystery…. He had been educated in England… lived in Greenwich Village in the twenties, in Hollywood (where he's been a newspaper reporter), as well as in Mexico in the thirties…." [Notebooks by Tennessee Williams and Margaret Bradham, see Notebook 1941 page 228, #389]. Referring to him as "Paul Dearest, " McCullers expresses her anticipation of seeing "the beautiful mink coat" Bigelow bought for her. "Paul, seriously, you don't know how grateful I am for these years of generosity and thoughtfulness. I have no verbal thanks but you know I love you in my heart for always. I sent you a case of Vodka, fixings for Bloody Mary. Would you drink a toast for us all...." In "The Lonely Hunter: A Biography of Carson McCullers," by Virginia Spencer Carr, a description of Bigelow buying a mink for McCullers is given. "Carson was almost as excited over Christmas as she was over birthdays, especially when it came to selecting gifts for Mary Mercer. She could seldom think of 'just the right present'… she relied often on her cousin for suggestions…. One winter Paul Bigelow called [Jordan] Massee [Jr.] from Connecticut and told him about an exquisite blond mink stole which he had the opportunity to buy at a great savings. 'Do you think Carson would like it for Mary?' asked Bigelow." Massee asked McCullers who was ecstatic, but she couldn't help but tell Mercer who refused to accept it because it was too expensive. This in turn caused a temporary rift between McCullers and Massee. McCullers wrote him out of her will, but they made up very quickly. Somehow, though, she neglected to reverse the will and when she died, he was not in it. Massee and Bigelow were roommates in New York. According to Tennessee Williams' "Notebooks" [Notebooks by Tennessee Williams and Margaret Bradham, see Notebook 1941 page 228, #389], Paul Bigelow was the "constant companion of Jordan Massee." Bigelow and Tennessee Williams had a close friendship that lasted well into the 1950s. In 1941 Williams wrote a poem for Paul Bigelow, a copy of which is in the "Notebooks." McCullers continues. "You are right about cousin Jordan. It is merciful that the Lord took him when he did and that he did not have to suffer...Mary, whom he adores, had just sent him this beautiful telegram which he had shown to every other should in the hospital...I am glad too that Mary drove him in the Bentley and took him to her house for Champagne supper when he was last in New York...." McCullers refers to her cousin Jordan Massee, Sr. Mary is Carson McCullers' physician and longtime friend, Dr. Mary E. Mercer.  Mercer cared for Carson and became her close confidant in the last years of her life. When Carson died, Mary inherited one third of the McCullers estate and then in 1968 bought the house. As a tribute to McCullers, who rented apartments in her house only to artists, writers and musicians, Mercer continued this practice after McCullers' death. [Nyack News & Views, article on Carson McCullers, 9/25/12]. Mercer bequeathed the house in Nyack to Columbus State University's Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians; it went to them after Mercer's death in 2013. [See:] McCullers concludes the letter asking Bigelow when he will visit. "As I explained, Mary and I have two houses so there is plenty [sic] of room for you and Boots to stay...." Boots" is Jordan Massee, Jr. She mentions that she has a collection of books for Leonard and signs above her typed name, "Carson." McCullers wrote this letter in the year her final novel was published, "Clock Without Hands," thought it garnered little attention.

        What's Happening with Momma?

Rosendale, New York:: Women's Studio Workshop,, 1988.. Edition of 150. 6.25 x 11.5 x 2" closed; extends to 38". Multiple accordion structure: a larger horizontal structure of 6 panels and 6 vertical accordions affixed to the horizontal panels of 8 panels each. Silkscreen and letterpress. Housed in a clear plastic box. This dimensional, house-shaped book literally unfolds to tell an autobiographical story full of pain and confusion from the author's childhood. Clarissa Sligh, Making Artist's Books (2002): "The emergence of a memory of a younger sister being born at home set into motion the making of What's Happening With Momma? It seemed like a simple idea, but while building and combining text with photographs, I found myself groping for the physical form it would take. "Making book dummies led me to realize that the container had to be a small safe space. But my biggest challenge was to create a structure that would also provide a way for the viewer to interact with the book in order to 'read' it. How could I evoke with photographs, mark making and text something of the way that the Baptist preacher and the gospel and rhythm and blues singers and musicians used repetitive, rhythmic fragments to elicit the audience response necessary for the satisfactory completion of their work? Here too 'the reader' needed to interact with the art. "After agonizing over it for months, I visited Keith Smith's home in Rochester, New York. There I saw a videotaping of a book artist, Susan Share, perform her book in order for it to be seen by the viewer. I knew immediately that her process of 'unfolding' was exactly what my piece was about. That night, a multiple accordion structure came to me in a dream. Waking up, I drew it in my sketchbook on the table beside my bed. The next morning I saw that it was the solution to the problem for which I had been searching. "Initially the book was made using a Van Dyke Brown alternative photographic process. Negatives were pieced together and contact printed for the house-shaped accordion structure. The interior accordion pieces, printed separately on a different paper, were cut, folded and adhered to the interior of the house structure with adhesive. Using these methods, I was able to make a very small and ephemeral edition. The following year, Women's Studio Workshop in Rosendale, New York, awarded me an artist residency fellowship. While there I made a different version of What's Happening With Momma? Ann Kalmbach guided me in strengthening the structure and in printing an edition of 150 books with silk screen inks and letterpress.

        In Flagrante

London: Secker & Warburg,, 1988. With an essay by John Berger & Sylvia Grant. Quarto. Original black cloth, titles to spine in silver and to front in blind, black endpapers. With the dust jacket. Illustrated throughout with photographs by Killip. An excellent copy in the slightly toned jacket. First edition, first impression, of the uncommon hardback issue. In Flagrante, Killip's "subjective book about my time in England" during its "de-industrialisation" (Killip's preface) is one of the greatest photobooks of the late 20th century, "a dark, pessimistic journey, perhaps even a secret odyssey, where rigorous documentary is suffused with a contemplative inwardness, a rare quality in modern photography" (Gerry Badger). Killip has chosen for the book's epigraph Yeats's poem, "He wishes for the cloths of Heaven", with the famous closing lines, "tread softly because you tread on my dreams", a choice which Berger & Grant, in their essay, describe as "searingly apt ... for it is as if all the photos here have been branded, like a hundred cattle, with the tenderness of those eight lines.

Melbourne: Hill House, 1988. Fine limited facsimile edition thus in original packaging/box. Original blue Japanese Saifu cloth, gilt. 52 fine coloured plates with accompanying text. Endpapers with a repeating pattern of BM library stamps. One of series of remarkably exact same-size facsimile of the original in the British Library, printed by offset lithography on acid-free matt art paper and hand-bound. The Hill House series contained the only authentic full-size facsimiles of the works of John Gould - this volume is one of the original printings and now out of print. An as-new copy. Publisher's blurb thus "They are not reproductions, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the B.M.(N.H.) originals. Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. boards covered in special Japanese Saifu cloth, gold stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Each copy is hand inspected by the printer's quality control officer, individually numbered on the inside front board, Thus, no two copies are exactly the same. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies, later production runs have not exceeded 300 for world-wide sale. This has been caused by a relative shortage of quality paper, together with the intensive hand-labour involved in their production." Please see the other Gould titles we are offering in this impressive edition. A POSTAL SURCHARGE MAY APPLY ON THIS HEAVY BOOK.. Facsimile Edition. Hardcover. New/No Dust Jacket. Elephant Folio.
