SIX (SIXTH SENSE): NUMBERS 1-8 - A SPECTACULAR COMPLETE SET

(COMME DES GARCONS) (KAWAKUBO, REI) (SIX). Kozasu, Atsuko, Editor. SIX (SIXTH SENSE): NUMBERS 1-8 - A SPECTACULAR COMPLETE SET. Tokyo. 1988-1991.: Comme Des Garcons Co. Ltd., First Editions. Folio. Stapled Tabloid Wrappers. Fashion Periodical. Near Fine or Better. Each circa 72pp, profusely illustrated in b&w and color. Art Direction by Tsuguya Inoue. Text in English and Japanese. "Six (Sixth Sense)" was innovative Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo's groundbreaking in-house magazine produced to promote her line Comme des Garcons. Published semi-annually between 1988 and 1991 to coincide with CDG's Spring and Fall collections, it ran for a mere eight issues, and was distributed hors commerce only to a select number of clients, fashion insiders and the label's boutiques - it was never made commercially available for sale. "Six" was notable for its striking design and production values that mixed Comme Des Garcons' seasonal looks with pictorials on the work of significant yet often overlooked photographers, artists and designers. Such features over the run included an issue devoted nearly entirely to Robert Frank as well as Andre Kertesz, Gisele Freund, Sachiko Kuru, Serge Lido, Tony Mendoza, Jean Cocteau, Eileen Grey, Yohji Yamamoto, Karl Blossfeldt, Andreas Feininger, Martin Munkacsi, Andre Vigneau, Ken Heyman, Gilbert & George, Gilbert Woon, Cecil Beaton, Elliot Erwitt, Ralph Steiner, Azzedine Alaia, The Boyle Family, David Fischli and Peter Weiss, Mike and Doug Starn, Issey Miyake, Lucie Rie, Line Vautrin, Salvador Dali, Niko Pirosmani, Dino Buzzati, Madame Yevonde, Edward Weston, Jeanette Montgomery Barron, and Alessandro Mendini. Photographers that contributed fashion editorial are Peter Lindbergh, Timothy Greenfield Sanders, Arthur Elgort, Pierre Boucher, Max Vadukul, F.C. Gundlach, Steven Meisel, Brian Griffin, Juergen Teller, Javier Vallhonrat, David Seidner, Christian Moser, Kishin Shinoyama and Dennis Hopper. Those pictured wearing CDG include Robert Ryman, Ellsworth Kelly, Philip Taaffe, Edward Albee, John Malkovich, Linda Evangelista, Francesco Clemente, Naomi Campbell, Julian Sands, John Lurie, Enzo Cucchi, John Cale, Kristin McMenamy, Harry Dean Stanton, Dennis Hopper, Deborah Harry, Sandra Bernhard, and Anna Pawlowski. A spectacularly well-preserved complete set of all eight issues of this significant publication each enclosed in the publisher's printed plastic sleeve, as issued. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         La Vie et L'Oeuvre de Jacques Majorelle 1886-1962 Les Orientalistes, Vol. 7 (The Life & Work of Jackues Majorelle) 1886-1962

ACR 1988 - Written by Felix Marcilhac, ACR Edition, Les Editions de l`Amatueur, First Print. 288 pages, illustrated throughout with photos, drawings, and facsimiles. Page 159 is numbered but blank. (printing error?) Heavy stock paper is used but the rich colors are not done justice with my insufficient photos, sorry. For the book, some dust spotting to the top edges, binding not as tight as new but holding very well for a book of there dimensions, small bit of dust/shelfwear to the bottom corner of the text block. Interior clean and bright but the sewn-in bookmark could use a good pressing. The dust jacket has a light fading to the spine and the top of the spine has some short tears, bit of rub-through at the corner tips. There are also two short tears to the bottom edge in the front. Lastly, previous owner has written in pencil to the inside front flap. An archival Brodart makes it look great! "Jacques Majorelle grew up in France. He was the son of a famous cabinetmaker from Nancy, Louis Majorelle. When he began his travels, he was immediately attracted to the South of Morocco. The sensitivity of his work distinguishes him amongst the Orientalist painters. He sought to understand the subtle nuances of life in the country he loved. Whether painting landscapes from the Atlas or scenes within a casbah, he infused his subjects with poetry and captured the authentic personality of the South." An incredibly scarce and beautiful book that will enhance any library of collection. Additional photos emailed upon request. Additional shipping will be required for overseas post.         Il Pendolo di Foucault [Foucault's Pendulum: Signed Association Copy]

Milano: Bompiani, 1988. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. A Very Good copy of the true first edition, first printing, "I edizione Bompiani ottobre 1988", published in the author's native Italy (spine ends pushed, corners bumped, light surface marking, some soiling to the edges of the closed page block, expected page toning), in a Very Good dust jacket (small closed puncture near to the front panel -- near to where the front panel turns to the spine -- and a short tear at each end of the spine repaired by tape on the jacket verso, otherwise Near Fine with rich coloring and only a bit of wear), SIGNED BY UMBERTO ECO on the half-title with a brief and intimate presentation as follows: "A Lucrecia / Sotto mivuda / pendolare /Umberto" which translated to English means "To Lucrecia under my watchful gaze in her travels Umberto". The inscription, written in the Italian Piedmontese dialect peculiar to Umberto Eco's hometown of Alessandria, is in the familiar form, implying intimacy. In official Italian, "pendolare" means "commuter", but in Piedmontese, recognized as a sub-language today and used by Eco in this inscription, the word means "traveler" and the sense of the inscription is that Lucrecia (the Piedmontese dialect version of "Lucretia") is a traveler to and from Eco himself. Umberto Eco's second novel, "Il Pendolo di Foucault" centers around three employees of a vanity publisher who, having read manuscript after manuscript presenting occult conspiracy theories, decide as an amusement to invent their own conspiracy. The three grow increasingly obsessed with their creation, sometimes forgetting that they themselves made it up. Other conspiracy theorists hear of the three's fake conspiracy and believe it to be real, with one secretive group believing that one of the three, Belbo, possesses the key to the lost treasure of the Knights Templar. The consequences then go far beyond what the three employees ever imagined. Signed copies of this, the true first edition of the book, written in Italian, are absolute hen's teeth, and this copy has the added distinction of bearing a very intimate inscription from Umberto Eco. A Very Good and RARE SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY OF THE TRUE FIRST EDITION. RARE.

Three panoramic views of Port Jackson, in New South Wales, with the town of Sydney, and the adjacent scenery. After original drawings by...Taylor...drawn from nature...between 1817 and 1822 and engraved in London by R. Havell and Son in 1823. Printed from the original plates now in the Dixson Galleries of the State Library of New South Wales

London: Alecto Editions and the State Library of New South Wales, 1988. Large oblong folio. (24 ½ x 31 inches). Letterpress title, 1 leaf explanatory text, 1 leaf colophon. 1 letterpress and half-tone key plate, three plates, engraved by Robert Havell and son, printed by Edward Egerton- Williams in colours 'a la poupee' and finished by hand, each with printer's blindstamp and pencilled notation on the margin 'B[onne] A T[irer]', extra-illustrated with three uncoloured printer's initial trial proofs, printed in black. Unbound as issued in original cloth portfolio by A. W. Lumsden of Edinburgh, with original printed card label inset on upper cover, small format limitation leaf mounted on front pastedown, ribbon ties. Unique copy of this fine limited edition, with 'bonne a tirer' plates and printer's trial proofs. The edition was limited to 110 copies, but the present copy is, not surprisingly, unnumbered. The brilliantly detailed prints are complimented by the proofs which give a fascinating insight into the working methods of a master craftsman. "By 1820, Sydney was a town of 12,000 inhabitants, about a third of whom were convicts. It had grown dramatically during the administration of Lachlan Macquarie who was appointed governor of New South Wales in 1810. Unlike previous governors, Macquarie was not content merely to oversee a penal colony. His vigorous building programme changed forever the appearance of Sydney, while his policy of accepting emancipated convicts as respected citizens demonstrated a social attitude strangely out of step with the times. Both these policies earned him criticism. In 1819, alarmed by Macquarie's extravagant public works, the British Government commissioned a lawyer and civil servant, J.T.Bigge, to investigate. The attacks by his critics were met head on by Macquarrie's supporters in New South Wales. Books, pamphlets and paintings luded the governor's undoubted achievements. Almost certainly Major Taylor's drawings were used in, if not commissioned for, this cause. The engraved views of the Panorama present a flattering image of the Australian seat of government and, by extension, of Macquarie's term there...Taylor arranged the engraving and printing of the of the three sheet Panorama.. upon his return to England in July 1822...Havell appears to have worked from [Taylor's].. large watercolours, but amended them with additional details.. and decorative elements...It is most fortuitous that the copper plates...have survived. There is no other example of such a case for 19th century Australian engravings..."

Remarkably (or perhaps not given Armstrong's famed desire for privacy), WINGLESS represents the only separately published work from the first man to walk on the moon.         Original Drawing [For a Book by William Burroughs]

1988. An original drawing by Wilson for William Burroughs' book Tornado Alley. This image was included in the exhibition "Ports of Entry: William Burroughs and the Arts" that was mounted by the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art in 1996, and it is reproduced on page 140 of the exhibition catalog. Interestingly, the illustration in the book does not show some of the work that Wilson did, as it was done using nonrepro blue pencil which does not show up when photographed: Wilson's edits didn't appear in Tornado Alley and they don't appear in Ports of Entry but they are quite visible in the work itself. Wilson, one of the great artists of the underground comix of the 1960s and beyond, whom R. Crumb has said was a major influence on Crumb's own work, collaborated with Burroughs on a number of projects. This is not only a significant work of art, and a significant association with Burroughs, but it is also signed by Wilson, who has added, "To Nelson" next to his signature: Wilson gave this work to his friend Nelson Lyon, who loaned it to the exhibition and is listed in the book as one of the lenders to the exhibit. This is, in effect, a three-way association: Nelson Lyon was the co-producer of Burroughs's Dead City Radio, an album of Burroughs reading his work against a background of experimental music by various artists. 9-3/4" x 6-3/4". Matted and framed. Fine. .
