Bass Line. The Stories and Photographs of Milt Hinton

Philadelphia: Temple University Press, , 1988. Foreword by Dan Morgenstern. Quarto. Original red cloth in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated from Hinton's photographs. A very good copy in the slightly rubbed jacket. First edition. Widely regarded as one of the greatest jazz bassists of all time, Hinton documented his career photographically, amassing some 35,000 negatives covering the period from the 30s to the 90s. "If there is a line between Milt Hinton the bassist and Milt Hinton the photographer, it's indistinguishable. The musician strives to play the note seldom heard; the photographer the subject at an angle seldom seen." [Branford Marsalis] This copy inscribed on the front free endpaper, "To Aurthor [sic. Jazz collector and researcher Arthur Newman], Many thanks. Please keep reading and listening, Milt "Judge" Hinton, [cartoon bass] '93. Never B sharp, Never B Flat, Just B Natural."

Phillips Pubns, 1988-06-01. Hardcover. Good. Signed by Other. Unique association copy. Stated first edition. Hardcover with dust jacket. This is a presentation copy signed on FFE by publisher Jim Phillips and inscribed to Raymond Jordan, one of America's first combat paratroopers. He has also made notations of the date and time he was wounded on the Anzio Beachhead and where his picture is located in this book. He has also signed his picture and noted his company/batallion. To rear pastedown is a notation concerning Rick Phillips with dates of his service. --- There is heavy thumbsoil to page fore-edges. Cloth boards a bit mottled.         Greatest Story Never Told - A Scientific Inquiry into the Evidence of the Fall Man From A Higher Civilization in Antiquity

Cottage Grove, MN: Biohistorical Press, 1988 Cottage Grove, MN: Biohistorical Press, 1988. First Edition, signed and inscribed - but not personalized ("Very Best of Wishes, Sincerely, Lana Cantrell") - by the author on the ffep. With the rare Dustjacket. Octavo, i-vi + 993 pp. + 9 page bibliography and 9 page index. White cloth boards, gilt titling, white/gold/black pictorial jacket, sphinx on its front, Cantrell on the back. A gleaming, fine book in a very good jacket showing some rubbing to the front. Flaps are unclipped, but un-priced as issued. A fascinating, odd, eccentric, compelling, undefinable book which, despite its size and eccentricities (over 1,000 dense pages, 44 chapters individually internally paginated varying from 4 to 80 pages, each with it own "References" page, listing sources both arcane and historic for what the author had therein written, and nine pages of bibliography) and its scarcity, now and at publication, somehow found its way to the Random House Reader's List of the 100 Best Nonfiction Titles of All Time - 88th place on that list, where it sits today. That's because anyone can quite literally feel the passion, intensity, individualism, hard work, deep research and originality of thought Cantrell put into it. The Greatest Story Never Told may be the most singular exposition you'll ever read of the now-popular general contention of some scholars - both fringe and not-so-fringe - that the age of human civilization, its sources, its purposes and its destiny are...very different from what we've always thought, here within the mainstream. Regardless of one's opinion about all that - an absolutely singular read. Very scarce, particularly with the signature and the well-preserved jacket. L-39n

        The Piano Teacher

New York: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1988. First American edition of the Nobel Prize-winning author's first book to be translated into English. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed and dated by Jelinek on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Sexuality and violence are coupled in this reveling story set in modern-day Vienna by Elfriedge Jelinek, winner of the Heinrich Boll Prize (1986). It's his first novel to be translated into English, and it won the author the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2004. The Piano Teacher depicts the emotionally rigorous world of Erika, and the neurotic love triangle that confuses violence for love. The inevitable breakdown is an insight beyond what Jelinek saw as the artificial prettiness of Vienna to show a side still reminiscent of its uncomfortable early post-war years. The novel was adapted into a film in 2001, directed by Michael Haneke, and it won numerous awards, including Best Actor and Best Actress at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, and Best Foreign Film at the 2002 German Film Awards.

The Satanic Verses ? Uncorrected Advance Proof in Proof Dustwrapper

London: Viking, 1988 - London: Viking, 1988. A near fine copy of the Uncorrected Advance Proof in a fine proof dustwrapper. Though there seem to be no textual differences to the first trade edition, the proof of The Satanic Verses has some unique features. For instance, there are no ornamental devices separating the sub-chapters, and the "Acknowledgements" page (549) is missing completely. Also, the beginning of the "Ayesha" chapter provides for numerical sub-divisions, which is unnecessary as there are none. The proof dustwrapper varies from the one of the first UK edition in that it is matt, uses a different and bolder typeface for the lettering of the author?s name and the title, has a box at the bottom of the inner flap and mentions both the UK and the US publishers at the bottom of the lower flap.         Past Forgetting: Memoirs of the Hammer Years (Signed First Edition)

Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London 1988 - First Edition. INSCRIBED by the author to New York theater set designer Susan Barras on the title page: "Susan Barras. / May God's blessing be with you always. / In all sincerity / Peter Cushing '92." Near Fine in a bright, Near Fine dust jacket, with a bruise at the top of the front endpaper from an earlier erasure. An uncommon signature from the meticulous actor whose name is synonymous with the great Hammer films of the 1950s through the 1970s (as Baron Frankenstein and Dr. Van Helsing, among other roles). Cushing also played Sherlock Holmes many times, and was memorable late in his career as Grand Moff Tarkin in the original "Star Wars" film, Darth Vader's unlucky first in command. He passed away in 1994, two years after the date of this signing. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Floating Through the Desert

[Stillwater ME. 1988]. Artist&#39;s book, copy number one of a series of seven, hand painted and hand lettered in watercolor and gouache on Rives BFK paper by the artist / author, Nancy Leavitt, and signed by her on the colophon. Page size: 7 x 10 inches; 14 leaves. Bound: loose as issued in hand-made case of green cotton fabric with purple and darker green exposed threads, lined with acrylic pastepaper, with malachite clasp. Hand lettered and painted in watercolor and gouache. The text is Ms. Leavitt&#39;s own narrating a dream sequence of a trip by car in February 1988. The dotted yellow line of the road on the tan paper is thrown into great relief by the bright blues in which the text is lettered and which surround the rectangular images about the letters. The letters themselves are in several shades of blue, and they are of various sizes, with words and lines on top of one another. The narrator tells of beginning to fall asleep as the blue in the image begins to take over the horizon line as well as the sides. Moving ahead by one month the dotted line on the road (this time through Arizona) is terracotta and the sky yellow with purple mountains just at the horizon line. The text is in a duller purple, terracotta, and celadon and Ms. Leavitt describes pencil sketches that almost "navigate" for her. She writes, "I floated through the desert moving without touching the earth" and describes how the road appears to climb up into the blue sky. The last image features the sky seeping over onto the dotted line / highway. The words throughout are in various colors, with a word starting in a paler tone and the last letters in a darker version of the first. Words in scarlet are followed by words in burgundy and then reddish-brown. Sometimes bright scarlet words are followed by green words, then blue, then lavender. Turquoise words sit below a coral road line marker just below a turquoise sky. This road trip with artist Nancy Leavitt is full of beauty and wonder. An extremely early effort by this talented artist, a harbinger of things to come, showing an already finely honed color sense that illuminates all she letters. <br>See an <A HREF= >Image.</A><br>

New York City, NY: Champion Studio, 1988. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. New York City, NY: Champion Studio, 1988. Hardcover. Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 1 pages. Rare Jim Stryker and Walter Kundzicz/Champion Studios collectible item. An original contemporary (1988) color photograph of Jim Stryker, the single most popular and most good-looking male-nude model discovered by Walter Kundzicz, in one of his earliest (and very few) full-frontal nude portraits. The photograph measures 3.5 X 5 inches and is presented "bleed". Champion Studio&#39;s vintage prints were "pocket size" and had white borders, the widespread practice in the 1960&#39;s. It is encased in a protective plastic sheet. The photograph shows Jim Stryker in a Modern full-profile pose, Perfection Incarnate, with a semi-erect penis. He is photographed in a dramatically lit studio setting and has close-cropped hair (Stryker grew his hair out for his later sessions with Kundzicz). The photograph belonged to the small surviving number of portraits in Walter Kundzicz&#39;s possession. The original prints were taken by Kundzicz&#39;s partner after Champion Studios dissolved, have completely vanished, and never been found. Furthermore, Stryker did not pose completely nude again in any of his later iconic portraits, and this photograph does not appear in Walter Kundzicz&#39;s "Champion" book. Jim Stryker is the prototypical All-American male beauty. He anticipates by about two decades the model/stars of the reigning American photographer of the male nude, Bruce Weber. This is the genuine article, not just memorabilia, a "must-have" collectible for Jim Stryker, Walter Kundzicz/Champion, and male erotic art photography collectors. <b><i> This is an original color print. This is the only such copy of the print available online, is eminently suitable for framing, and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. There are Jim Stryker/Walter Kundzicz prints and digital copies available online, but most of them have major flaws and have little or no collectible value. A rare copy thus. </b></i> One of the iconic American male-nude models of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JIM STRYKER, TUCK POWELL, JOE DALLESANDRO, AND BRUCE OF LOS ANGELES TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

Fluxus Codex. The Gilbert and Lila Silverman Fluxus Collection., With an introduction by Robert Pincus-Witten.

New York: Abrams, 1988 - 616 S. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - During the 1960s, when curious and radical art activities took place, one would gather up a batch of posters and snapshots and other little bits and mail them off to Dr. Hanns Sohm in Markgröningen, West Germany. It was a ritual repeated hundreds of times in numerous countries. I think many of us were not too clear who the addressee was, except that he was someone who cared as deeply and passionately about the activities as those who did them. What to most was junk and a candidate for the dust bin was to Sohm a treasure. One even heard rumors that he organized and filed the bits in a coherent manner, rather than just dropping them in a box to accumulate dust as most did. Then, in 1969 artists received nicely printed cards asking that they list all their performance activities, publi-cations, reviews, etc. There was going to be a show in Cologne and he needed the information for a catalogue. What appeared the next year was the landmark HAPPENING & FLUXUS, a book of extraordinary value chronicling the decade. For the first time, one realized that like activities were taking place all over the world. A typical page of the book listed: Bengt af Klintberg's "Orangerimusik" in Stockholm and Uppsala; Allan Kaprow's "Bon Marche" in Paris; "Fluxus Festival of Total Art" in Nice; Ken Dewey's "A.C.T. of San Francisco Yliopplasteatteri" in Helskinki; Al Hansen's "Parisol 4 Marisol" in New York; Hi Red Center Group's "Por Rogy" in Tokyo; "New Music at the Pocket Theater" with many Fluxus artists participating in New York; "1 st Festival of Avantgarde" organized by Charlotte Moorman in New York; and Robert Whitman's "Water" in Los Angeles. In the summer of 1978, when we were just beginning the Silverman Fluxus Collection, two seemingly simple but troubling questions came up that had unforeseen consequences. The first question was what constitutes a Fluxus work? And the second, what were these works? Out of curiousity I prepared a group of pages for each Fluxus artist, listing all the works I could find in various Fluxus newspapers, putting works already in the Silverman Collection above a line and others below the line. That next year, Gilbert and Lila Silverman travelled to West Germany and stopped in Markgröningen, a small village near Stuttgart. There, the Silvermans paid a visit to Hanns Sohm. The visit extended to several days as Sohm carefully went over the list of Fluxus works, marking each, indicating whether it was known to exist or not, or that he had seen it but it wasn't in his collection, and showing the Silvermans the works in his magnificent Fluxus collection. Always sharing a contagious passion for the material, his hospitality knew no limits as days extended into nights. That, then, was the beginning of this book. The lists expanded ten fold as more references were located and the definition of Fluxus product became clearer. It was that initial visit which was the catalyst. Hanns Sohm, over the years, has furthered the knowledge of Fluxus and other radical art movements, sharing information with scholars and students, and especially artists, helping many with purchases and numerous other encouragements. A few years ago Dr. Sohm placed his invaluable collection in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart where it will permanently be available to study and to learn from. He continues his work, devoting many days each month to the archive and sharing his knowledge with others. ISBN 9780810909205 Sprache: en Gewicht in Gramm: 2550 Mit zahlr. Abb.
