NY St. Martin, 1988. Paperback. Very Good. This is the review copy, in illustrated paper wraps, issued before the first edition, and signed by Thomas Harris. Purchased by Rare Book Archive from a reputable South Florida bookseller (correspondence available upon request.) Mr. Harris Winters in Florida and autographed this copy there. Corners just barely soft, light creases on spine. Some rubbing to cover. Overall, remains quite clean and sharp. Binding is tight and sound, spine is square. Quite a presentable copy of Mr. Harris's magnum opus - in its earliest state, and signed. Hannibal Lector has become one of the most well-known villians of all time, a name as recognizable as Frankenstein and Dracula. A touchstone of 20th century horror literature.

My Pretty Pony ---by Stephen King ---a Signed, Limited Edition ( Aluminum Edition with Digital Clock with Custom Slipcase )

N.Y.: Whitney Museum of American Art, 1988, 1st Edition, 1st Printing ----------hardcover, a Fine unread copy in a Near Fine/ Fine custom made clamshell slipcase (not issued with this production but strongly recommended by The Whitney Museum as a safe harbour for this unique piece), book is approx. 19 x 13 inches, a stunning production and missing from many KING collections, bound in aluminum with a red leather spine, digital clock mounted in the front aluminum panel (battery has run down but can be easily replaced), one of 280 copies, signed by KING and KRUGER, 100 copies were reserved for patrons of the museum, 150 copies were offered for sale, 30 Roman numeraled copies were reserved for family and friends, this is one of the 150 copies edition, when this tome was issued purchasers were given information about caring for the book with the recommendation (certainly a strong suggestion) that the buyer might want to have a custom case made for the book, the company BOOKLAB INC, was recommended for this, this copy DOES HAVE the custom clam-shell tray case designed and produced by BookLab Inc., the case is Near Fine/Fine and is a perfect holder for this massive, weighty book, this copy also has the original BookLab letter and order form for this traycase, that letter states: "A handsome drop-spine box was made to house (this) volume. The box is covered in two tones of grey, with grey tweed book cloth on the case and steel grey fabric on the walls. The title is stamped in silver on the red leather spine label. The interior is lined in steel gray (cloth), and the entire ensemble harmonizes with the book in color and style. ---", As well, a letter (and a catalogue for BL Inc) (both in a Whitney Museum envelope) is included on how to care for the book, including care for the aluminum covers and how to change the battery in the clock, this letter also states that the interleaving protective sheets between the illustrations and the text can be removed ---"in 1990 when the ink is fully dry"---, of course the lithographs were dry but the interleaves were only there for "just-in-case" protection to protect from any potential bleeding of inks, this copy has NOT had the interleaf protectors removed, so this copy is as issued, additional images are available, hard to imagine a nicer, more complete copy, (and finally, this is in the original shipping box for the traycase ---just a cardboard box with packing but it is what the traycase was shipped in when ordered ), any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo. Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/No Jacket as issued. Illus. by Barbara Kruger Design.

        King Ink (Signed First Edition)

London: Black Spring Press, 1988. First Edition. First Edition. SIGNED by Cave just after the title page, dated in the year of publication: "Nick Cave / 1990." But for a tiny bit of wear at one corner (only visible on close inspection). Fine and unread in a Fine dust jacket. Author and singer/songwriter Cave's first book, which collects early lyrics from his recordings with The Birthday Party and the Bad Seeds (up to and including the Bad Seeds' record, "Your Funeral, My Trial"), short stories and short plays. Cave's dark vision, coupled with his strong connections to primitive folk and blues music, and murder ballads in particular, has yielded an artist whose music rivals the intensity and integrity of Tom Waits and Johnny Cash. Even more impressively, Cave recently made a strong debut as a screenwriter in the hard-boiled Australian western, "The Proposition." Extremely uncommon.

THE BIRDS OF NEW GUINEA and the adjacent Papuan Islands, including many new species recently discovered in Australia. Completed after the author’s death. Volume 1 [Birds of Prey; Birds of Paradise; Crows]

Melbourne: Hill House, 1988. First limited facsimile edition thus, (No.168 of 750 copies). Original brown-red Japanese Saifu cloth gilt, preserved in the original numbered carton. Pp. vi, plus 56 fine coloured plates with accompanying text. Endpapers with a repeating pattern of BM library stamps. One of series of remarkably exact same-size facsimile of the original in the British Library, printed by offset lithography on acid-free matt art paper and hand-bound. The Hill House series contained the only authentic full-size facsimiles of the works of John Gould - this volume is one of the original printings and now out of print. An as-new copy. Publisher's blurb thus "They are not reproductions, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the B.M.(N.H.) originals. Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. boards covered in special Japanese Saifu cloth, gold stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Each copy is hand inspected by the printer's quality control officer, individually numbered on the inside front board, hand wrapped in protective brown paper, and placed in its own crush-proof outer carton. The carton is then sealed, numbered 168 and signed on the outside by the printer's quality control officer. Thus, no two copies are exactly the same. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies, later production runs have not exceeded 300 for world-wide sale. This has been caused by a relative shortage of quality paper, together with the intensive hand-labour involved in their production." This book is held in stock.. Facsimile Edition. Hardback. As New. Elephant Folio.

Lovejoy. Excerpts from a Memoir. A Commentary and Etchings by Bruce Chandler with an Epilogue by Anthony Lewis

Boston: The Heron Press. 1988. First Edition, one of 115 copies each signed by the author / artist, Bruce Chandler, and Anthony Lewis. Page size: 15-1/2 inches x 11-1/4 inches . Illustrated with eight etchings, most of them drypoints, some with aquatint and lift ground, one double page, by Chandler, who also editioned them. The text, set in Monotype Janson, was printed by Dan Keleher. Woodtype of the period was used for the title page. Bound by Harcourt Bindery: 1/4 blue morocco and blue linen over boards, in tan linen clamshell box; the deluxe copy loose in 1/2 morocco clamshell box, fine. The Reverend Elijah P. Lovejoy, called by John Quincy Adams "the first American Martyr to the Freedom of the Press & the Freedom of the Slave," was a native of Maine and graduate of Colby College. He settled in St. Louis, MO in 1827 where he founded a school modeled on the New England classical school. He then bought an interest in the St. Louis Times, becoming Editor and Publisher. In 1832 after undergoing a religious conversion he went to Princeton Theological Seminary. In 1833, with a license to preach the gospel as a Presbyterian minister, he returned to St. Louis to start a new religious newspaper, the St. Louis Observer. He immediately started writing against slavery and was attacked by a local mob, his press being thrown into the Mississippi. this happened three more times. Each time Lovejoy resumed his publishing crusade. However, on November 7, 1837, the mob would not be denied. Lovejoy was shot and his press destroyed. & Lovejoy has been a subject of interest to scholars of the Abolition Movement since that time, resulting in several works including Senator Paul Simon's LOVEJOY, MARTYR TO FREEDOM. Bruce Chandler has written the text, using excerpts from the family MEMOIR, published in 1838, Lovejoy's own abolitionist titles, his letters to his family, as well as more recent biographies. The telling of Lovejoy's bravery and commitment in both pictures and works, reprinting Lovejoy's own articles and family letters, is beautifully done. The etchings are dark and menacing; the text firm and clear. This is a thoughtfully produced hommage to freedom of the press -- an important story retold and interpreted by one of this country's fine book artists.
See an Image.
Wood Engravings by Gertrude Hermes being illustrations to Selborne. (Gregynog)

Newtown, Powys.: Gwasg Gregynog, 1988 With extracts from Gilbert White. Introduced by William Condry with a postscript by James Hamilton. No inscriptions etc, (x), 30 pp, 6 pls, 355*240 mm, printed on the Hedelberg Cylinder, part of the title, headings and marginal notes in brown, bound by Smith Settle, in quarter fawn cloth, gold rule, with brown on cream patterned boards, titled in gold on the spine, this is number 1 of 200 ordinary copies, then there were 15 unbound copies and 25 specials. The 6 wood engravings by Hermes are stunning to say the least and thought by many to be among her very best prints, and published here by arrangement with the NLW for the first time. (Esslemont Hughes 19)Hermes, Gertrude Anna Bertha, printmaker, sculptor, and designer, moved with her husband, in 1930 to Montgomeryshire, where Hughes-Stanton had been appointed wood-engraver to the Gregynog Press. The press also contracted Hermes to engrave for them, but their production was frustrated by her inability, through deep unhappiness, to complete wood-engravings for A Natural History of Selborne by Gilbert White, and the edition never appeared.
