London: Unwin Hyman 1988-90 Five Volumes 8vo vi,297; vi,385; vi,393; vi,380; viii,455pp - The History of Middle-Earth Vols. 1-5. A Very Fine matching set of the Unwin Hyman reprint series, all in Very Fine Brodart-protected Dust Wrappers, with the Unwin Hyman logo to the spines. This set is comprised of The Book of Lost Tales Parts I & II, The Lays of Beleriand, The Shaping of Middle-Earth, and The Lost Road and Other Stories. Lost Tales Book One is the 1990 Printing, all the others are the 1988 Printings. These five volumes together comprise the bulk of J.R.R. Tolkien's early writings on Middle-Earth, from The Book of Lost Tales, the first major work of imagination by J.R.R. Tolkien, begun in 1916-17 when he was 25 years old, taking in such sustained works as the Lay of the Children of Hurin, and the Lay of Leithian; writings detailing the mythological background of Middle-Earth, such as the Ambarkanta or Shape of the World; the Annals of Valinor & Beleriand which chronicle the First Age of Middle-Earth; the earliest versions the Silmarillion; through to the later forms of the Annals, The Lost Road, and The Lhammas. These writings bring the History of Middle-Earth up to the point where The Lord of the Rings was begun, and the next four volumes of the series chronicle the History of The Lord of the Rings. A highly desireable set, becoming increasingly difficult to obtain in this condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

(Wilmington): (Totleben & Bissette)/[Spiderbaby Grafix]. (1988). An advance copy of the first issue of Taboo, a landmark comix/graphic novel anthology, inscribed by the editor (Totleben), with the written note "#3.5 in 25 preview copies." Tapebound 8-1/2" x 11" galley sheets, with a handwritten "Taboo!" label on the front cover. Contributions by Clive Barker, S. Clay Wilson, Alan Moore, Chester Brown, Charles Burns, Eddie Campbell, Charles Vess, Dave Sim, and others. Taboo published edgier graphic fiction than could be done by mainstream presses, including Alan Moore and Chester Brown's From Hell, and work by Charles Burns, famous for his later graphic novel Black Hole. Front label lifting; ownership stamps; else fine. Together with an 8-page solicitation of contributions dated the previous year, delineating the guidelines and the vision. Again, an ownership stamp; near fine with one corner stapled. Together with the published version of the first issue, inscribed by Totleben and the publisher, Stephen Bissette, as well as Taboo 2 and Taboo 3. A notable collection, particularly with the advance copy -- a handmade production apparently limited to 25 copies but doubtless far fewer still exist. First Edition.

The Old-time Printer

Baltimore: Xavier Press, 1988. vi, 18pp. Samuel Clemens's account of his formative time spent as a printer's apprentice, presented as a speech at a dinner for New York printers. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Clemens, and a vignette depicting a compositor setting type. This copy is in a designer binding by the Italian-British bookbinder Paolo Taddeo. Onlays of salmon, grey, and black morocco form the shape of a piece of lead type, outlined in palladium-leaf tooling, creating a symmetrical design on each of the covers. The artist chose the letter H for his design, citing the letter's visual stability and steadiness, "with both feet firmly planted on the ground." As someone whose first language is Italian, he also notes that his selection of the letter H is "controversial," since it is not pronounced in his native language and gives him difficulty in spoken English. However, he writes, "in my mother tongue it's a letter of vital importance in the way that it changes the sounds of the consonants it attaches to." Housed in a clamshell box that contains a drawer for the two pieces of seven- and ten-point type included with the book. Taddeo was elected a Licentiate of Designer Bookbinders in 2013 and has twice won the Arthur Johnson Award in the organization's annual competition. (2 1/2 by 2; 65x53mm).

Los cohetes duraron todo el día (The Rockets Went on All Day)

Petróleos Mexicanos, Mexico City 1988 - First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Black laminated cloth-covered boards with title stamped in gold on cover and spine, with photographically illustrated dust jacket. Photographs and preface (in Spanish) by Pedro Meyer. Introduction (in Spanish) by Francisco Rojas G., Director General, Pemex. Additional text (in Spanish) quoting individuals pictured in the book. Includes a list of plates. 152 pp., with 163 black-and-white plates finely printed in Mexico by Artes Gráficas Panorama, S.A. de C.V. 15-3/4 x 11-1/4 inches. This first edition was limited to 5000 copies. CONDITION: Fine in Fine dust jacket. [Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).] Los cohetes duraron todo el día was realized to mark the 50th anniversary of Pemex, the nationalized Mexican oil company. It was, however, never released due to "political scuffling." Nonetheless, as Martin Parr and Gerry Badger assert, "this is a fine example of a company photobook in the journalistic mode, a mini The Family of Man in outlook, but one with more of a social viewpoint and political bite. It begins [like The Family of Man] with the birth of a baby, a new being whose life will be enriched by the oil company or, rather, by the fact that Mexico's oil deposits were nationalized for the benefit of its people. And it is ordinary people who are to the fore in this book, from the workers who are employed by the national oil company, to the Mexican masses who benefit from the much-needed foreign currency it brings. Meyer tells this simple but politically pertinent story in a bold and graphic way, in a publication that, although a company photobook, [succeeds] in its celebration of the Latin American proletariat."         Nach Der Natur (From Nature)

Franz Greno, Nordlingen, Germany 1988 - Fine in a Near Fine dustjacket. Bound in full green cloth. Both the spine and the front panel are stamped in black. Quarto. 99pps., plus six double-page photos (including the endpapers) by Thomas Becker. An excellent, collector's-quality copy: clean, tight, square, and bright. All tips are sharp. The text is immaculate; no apparent reading wear and no previous ownership markings. The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, has a small closed tear at the top of the front panel. A long poem in three sections. Sebald's first book-length, literary publication -- issued at a time when he had little public profile, with only a couple of academic pieces to his credit along with poems in various periodicals. Purchase with confidence: all books, gradings, and descriptions are rendered the care of a genuine bibliophile.         Lovejoy. Excerpts from a Memoir. A Commentary and Etchings by Bruce Chandler with an Epilogue by Anthony Lewis.

The Heron Press, Boston 1988 - First Edition, one of 115 copies each signed by the author / artist, Bruce Chandler, and Anthony Lewis. Page size: 15-1/2 inches x 11-1/4 inches . Illustrated with eight etchings, most of them drypoints, some with aquatint and lift ground, one double page, by Chandler, who also editioned them. The text, set in Monotype Janson, was printed by Dan Keleher. Woodtype of the period was used for the title page. Bound by Harcourt Bindery: 1/4 blue morocco and blue linen over boards, in tan linen clamshell box; the deluxe copy loose in 1/2 morocco clamshell box, fine. The Reverend Elijah P. Lovejoy, called by John Quincy Adams "the first American Martyr to the Freedom of the Press & the Freedom of the Slave," was a native of Maine and graduate of Colby College. He settled in St. Louis, MO in 1827 where he founded a school modeled on the New England classical school. He then bought an interest in the St. Louis Times, becoming Editor and Publisher. In 1832 after undergoing a religious conversion he went to Princeton Theological Seminary. In 1833, with a license to preach the gospel as a Presbyterian minister, he returned to St. Louis to start a new religious newspaper, the St. Louis Observer. He immediately started writing against slavery and was attacked by a local mob, his press being thrown into the Mississippi. this happened three more times. Each time Lovejoy resumed his publishing crusade. However, on November 7, 1837, the mob would not be denied. Lovejoy was shot and his press destroyed. Lovejoy has been a subject of interest to scholars of the Abolition Movement since that time, resulting in several works including Senator Paul Simon's LOVEJOY, MARTYR TO FREEDOM. Bruce Chandler has written the text, using excerpts from the family MEMOIR, published in 1838, Lovejoy's own abolitionist titles, his letters to his family, as well as more recent biographies. The telling of Lovejoy's bravery and commitment in both pictures and works, reprinting Lovejoy's own articles and family letters, is beautifully done. The etchings are dark and menacing; the text firm and clear. This is a thoughtfully produced hommage to freedom of the press -- an important story retold and interpreted by one of this country's fine book artists. See an Image. Printed in an edition limited to 60 copies, on Johannot paper, each copy signed by the poet and the artist. A sequence of five haiku by the Scottish poet Kenneth White who lives in France and has written verses in English and in French. Each page has the English verse, followed by the French verse set in italic; the recto of each page is Bertrand Bracaval's silkscreen. Inspired by the ancient monuments of Greece, the Acropolis, Delphi, etc. The haiku catch the starkness of the Greek landscape, as do the stone-like triangles in Bracaval's square silkscreens. The French artist has also set the type. Bracaval has been awarded many prizes through nearly four decades beginning with the Prix Lafont in 1967 and most recently the Prix Robert Beltz in 2002. His works are continually exhibited and are held in such public collections as the Centre George Pompidou, British Library, and the Boston Athenaeum. loose signatures gathered in a paper wrapper, grey linen clamshell box [Attributes: Signed Copy]

New commentaries are included along with essays written by famous living mathematicians, including A. Frohlich, Olga Taussky-Todd and H. Stark. Heilbronn's best-known work was in class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields, but his other contributions to number theory and analysis, especially to Waring's problem, L functions, sieve problems, etc are notable and had a strong influence on the development of these subjects. The top two edge-corners of covers are moderately "bumped". The textblock edges are clean and bright with just a few tiny spots here and there. The pages are all clean and unmarked with the following exceptions: a paper-clip has been used as a page-marker and has left a small impression at top edge of page 3-22, and there is a small section of about 20 pages (between 5-25 and 5-45) in which there is light wrinkling to the bottom edge of the pages near the spine area. There are no other markings/issues with the text pages. The binding is excellent with a straight spine. This book will be stored and delivered in a secure storage box with foam padding. Published by Shelton Enterprises Inc, 1988; 830 pages; Hardcover binding. . Good.

1988. Book. 1st. Foreword by Dan Morgenstern. 200 photographs by Milt Hinton, most previously unpublished. Philadelphia: Temple University Press, 1988. First edition. 9¾" x 11"; 328 pp. An authentic memoir of a life in jazz by Milt "The Judge" Hinton, the "Dean of bass players" for his generation. Hinton played with Cab Calloway’s orchestra from 1936 to 1951, as well as with other jazz greats including Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Benny Carter, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, and Billie Holiday. An extremely versatile performer, Hinton also worked in numerous television orchestras, and studio recording sessions, becoming the most recorded jazz musician of all time according to the Jazz Discography. He began taking photographs in 1935 with a camera that he received as a birthday present, shooting more than 40,000 images over the course of his life of the performers and personalities that became his mentors, colleagues, and friends. An incomparable jazz archive, Hinton’s photographs have been the subject of more than 30 exhibitions. Inscribed and dated in the year of publication by Milt Hinton to legendary jazz saxophonist, trumpeter, arranger, composer and bandleader Benny Carter (1907-2003) on the front flyleaf: "To Benny Carter: Dear Benny I humbly / thank you for all the encouragement and support / you’ve given me through the years. The entire music / world respects and loves you beginning with me / Milt "Judge" Hinton [small sketch of a bass] 88." Carter is mentioned numerous times in the text and appears in two of Hinton’s photographs. A fine copy in a fine jacket with some moderate sunning along the spine..
