U.S.astronaut who manned the Mercury Sigma 7 (1962) and was command pilot of Gemini 6 (1965), which made the first rendezvous in space. Schirra began flying at 13 and became a naval aviator after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD, in 1945. He flew 90 missions in the Korean War. A test pilot, he was one of the original seven astronauts named in 1959. On October 3, 1962, Schirra orbited the Earth six times in Sigma 7. His scheduled flight with Thomas P.         LOS COHETES DURARON TODO EL DIA - SIGNED BY PEDRO MEYER

Petroleos Mexicanos, Mexico City, MEXICO 1988 - 148pp, profusely illustrated in b&w. Text in Spanish. "Los cohetes duraron todo el dia" is noted Mexican photographer Pedro Meyer's 1988 socially conscious photo essay commissioned by the national petroleum company Pemex to coincide with its fiftieth anniversary. Due however to Meyer's dedication of the volume to Lazaro Cardenas, the socialist-leaning former president who established Pemex in 1938 as part of his nationalization of Mexican oil production (whose son also happened to be an opposition candidate to then-current president Carlos Salinas earlier in the year), the newly elected government seized nearly all the copies printed to put a stop to the book's distribution. A pristine copy of this uncommon and desirable document (cited on pages 198-199 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II") acquired directly from Pedro Meyer BOLDLY SIGNED by the photographer in black ink beneath the frontispiece image on the second preliminary.         INSCRIBED COPY of What Mad Pursuit and Additional Signed Letter Archive

Basic Books, Inc, New York 1988 - First Edition. An archive of material containing several signed letters from Crick to Meyer Friedman of the Meyer Friedman Institute as well as an inscribed copy of Crick's book, What Mad Pursuit. Francis Crick presented Friedman with an inscribed copy of his book What Mad Pursuit in October 1988. Friedman sent Crick a check for the book, which Crick signed (a note from Friedman to that effect is included in the archive). Several years later, Friedman in 1993 approached Crick attempting to learn about reprints of his 1953 paper. In 1997, Friedman asked and received permission from Crick to pubish a photograph of Crick in his book, "Medicine's Ten Most Significant Discoveries". 2 letters signed by Crick note these events. The specifics of the archive follow with a brief history. Crick, Francis, WHAT MAD PURSUIT: A Personal View of Scientific Discovery, Basic Books: New York, 1988, First edition. INSCRIBED by Crick to Meyer Friedman of the Meyer Friedman Institute. WITH several SIGNED letters and a SIGNED check. Today the term DNA is a household word, a word we associate with the continued battle against disease, the continuing understanding of our own workings as a human machine, and to those of us who are interested in the seminal inventions of the 20th century, with the Giants who discovered DNA: Francis Crick, James Watson, Rosalind Franklin and RG Gosling. Watson, Crick, and Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1962 for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nuclear acids and its significance for information transfer in living material. What Mad Pursuit contains Francis Crick's account of that remarkable journey, and it gives us a rather personal window into the man. This particular copy is INSCRIBED to Meyer Friedman, who is probably best known as the co-developer the theory of the "Type A" behavior, and who opened up the field of inquiry into the mind-heart (or mind-body) connection that has also became a part of our popular culture. It is a fascinating connection between 2 scientists. One who is looking at the macro or "top-down" world of how we work as humans, and the other who is looking at the micro, or "inside-out" way of how we work as humans. This archive includes several letters SIGNED by Crick to Friedman. The book is inscribed to Friedman in 1988, and was given to Friedman by Crick. The archive includes a note Friedman wrote indicating he afterward sent Crick a check for the cost of the book: "I admit I also sent him the check to get his signature on its reverse side. I was fortunate." The signed check is also included. 2 further letters between Crick and Friedman are included in the archive. The first from 1993 is responding to a query by Friedman about reprints of his 1953 paper. The second grants permission to Friedman to publish Cricks photograph in a book Medicine's Ten Most Significant Discoveries. In all, 5 pieces (with 4 signatures by Crick). What Mad Pursuit is very good in dj, noting some spine slant, what appears to be a coffee stain on the fore-edge, and sun-fading to the dj in several places. A small fine black ink mark on p. 69 with very short related note inked on rear endpaper (both from Friedman). The 2 letters from Crick are Fine noting the usual folds for mailing. Friedman's note is very good and the check is good with a paperclip indentation through Crick's signature. A nice archive, and worthy of addition to any strong collection of 20th century medicine. Hard Cover. Signed by Author. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

English language booklet is bound in black paper/card covers with repro. of white title label on front cover. Back cover fore-edge shows 3 small tan spots to the latex surface, very light scratches to the (very soft) latex surface; excepting these few minor details, binding, book & booklet are in overall fine condition. This might be an out-of series, signed copy (the colophon mentions 500 copies in yellow [latex] that have been signed & numbered). Covers Enzo Cucchi outdoor sculptures from 1982-88, in Venice, Basel, at Lousiana, Guggenheim Museum; fountains, installations, etc. Texts & statements by Martin Schwander, Emilio Mazzoli, Ulrich Werner; quotes from Gottfied Benn, Herman Melville, Botho Strauss, Michelangelo, Goethe, Encyclopedia Britannica (1911). (German text with English translation). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        King Ink (Signed First Edition)

Black Spring Press, London 1988 - First Edition. SIGNED by Cave just after the title page, dated in the year of publication: "Nick Cave / 1990." But for a tiny bit of wear at one corner (only visible on close inspection). Fine and unread in a Fine dust jacket. Author and singer/songwriter Cave's first book, which collects early lyrics from his recordings with The Birthday Party and the Bad Seeds (up to and including the Bad Seeds' record, "Your Funeral, My Trial"), short stories and short plays. Cave's dark vision, coupled with his strong connections to primitive folk and blues music, and murder ballads in particular, has yielded an artist whose music rivals the intensity and integrity of Tom Waits and Johnny Cash. Even more impressively, Cave recently made a strong debut as a screenwriter in the hard-boiled Australian western, "The Proposition." Extremely uncommon.         The Old-time Printer

Baltimore: Xavier Press, 1988. vi, 18pp. Samuel Clemens's account of his formative time spent as a printer's apprentice, presented as a speech at a dinner for New York printers. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Clemens, and a vignette depicting a compositor setting type. This copy is in a designer binding by the Italian-British bookbinder Paolo Taddeo. Onlays of salmon, grey, and black morocco form the shape of a piece of lead type, outlined in palladium-leaf tooling, creating a symmetrical design on each of the covers. The artist chose the letter H for his design, citing the letter's visual stability and steadiness, "with both feet firmly planted on the ground." As someone whose first language is Italian, he also notes that his selection of the letter H is "controversial," since it is not pronounced in his native language and gives him difficulty in spoken English. However, he writes, "in my mother tongue it's a letter of vital importance in the way that it changes the sounds of the consonants it attaches to." Housed in a clamshell box that contains a drawer for the two pieces of seven- and ten-point type included with the book. Taddeo was elected a Licentiate of Designer Bookbinders in 2013 and has twice won the Arthur Johnson Award in the organization's annual competition. (2 1/2 by 2; 65x53mm).
