U.S. Nuclear Weapons - The Secret History

AeroFax, Arlington, TX 1988 - Arlington, TX: Aerofax, 1988. First Edition. Illustrated from photographs. 232 pp including index. 11x8, gilt-lettered navy blue boards; pictorial jacket. A strong Near Fine in like jacket; jacket with modest closed tear with associated crease at rear panel, light soiling; small smudge on title; near fine in like jacket. Scarce first edition, in handsome condition, by the self-made guru of U.S. Nuclear Weapons history, Chuck Hansen. Hansen, who died of brain cancer in 2003, also authored The Swords of Armageddon - published on CD ROM in 1995 - as a voluminous follow-up on the same subject, but this rare title remains the standard reference on the legendary researcher's main subject, that being the development of U.S. nuclear weaponry following the Manhattan Project of World War II. The part Hansen may have played in the making of world history itself, with his ceaseless research into a topic on which research was generally less than appreciated by the government for decades, may never be known. From one of many online sites on Hansen: "Using only public and properly declassified information, Chuck published the first publicly available description of the weapon in the U.S. nuclear arsenal. When the landmark legal case U.S. vs The Progressive led to the longest prior restraint on publication in U.S. history, in 1979, it was Chuck Hansen's letter to a U.S. Senator analyzing the government's allegations that led to the collapse of the government's case. This event marked the end to the policy of atomic information being "born secret" and opened public debate on the nature and implications of nuclear weapons. This legacy remains with us today, even in the increasingly secretive world of post 9-11 America", (and) "The story of the Arms Race [and by extension, the Cold War] cannot be understood without knowing what took place inside those empires. Knowing this secret history is critically important to understanding what happened in the world in those years, and why. Western democracy is founded on the principle that open exchange of information and public debate is essential for maintaining a healthy and successful society, and is moreover the means by which the individual exercises control of his or her own destiny. As Senator Daniel Moynihan, who fatefully passed away on the same day as Chuck Hansen, observed about the U.S. victory in the Cold War: 'It was a victory achieved by openness, not secrecy'. Without knowing the inner history of the Arms Race, public debate cannot profit from it." Starting by accumulating the scant legally available information on nuclear armament at the time, Hansen, in his decades-long task, ultimately penned this almost mythical work, itself now a piece of history. Full of photographs, charts, footnotes and other hard information, as well as Hansen's standard text and description, U.S. Nuclear Weapons - The Secret History is a perfect and fascinating blend, a rare example of a non-fiction reference page-turner. The level of detail in the author's mindset is difficult to convey; it has to be seen. A superior copy. Lg2 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        November Birches

White, Kenneth. Walker, Anne. November Birches. Paris: Editions Biren, 1988. Octavo (6 1/2 x 5 1/2"). 21pp., 4 color etchings. Unbound, loose sheets in wrappers, in blue slip case as issued. No. 48 of 60 copies, signed by the author and illustrator. Fine copy. Not in OCLC or RLIN. Anne Walker is a native New Englander, who emigrated to France in 1955 after graduating from Smith College. She took up woodcuts in 1956 in Paris, and etching and aquatint in 1968. She began making gouache and pastel books in 1989, turning away from printmaking. She has had exhibitions in Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, and the United States. Walker explains her transition from the precision of printmaking to the more abstract techniques she uses in her gouache and pastel books as a change in her world view. Her initial attraction to printmaking "was a way of creating stability using solid materials that supposed a contained and precise technique that was reassuring in itself. Once released from this need because of being able to accept (more or less) that the world will always be a fragile place to live in, I feel freer and happier with what I am doing now." Many of Walker's books are closely associated with poetry. She has worked with contemporary poets, often asking them to hand-letter their poems into her books, and she has used poems from late poets such as Emily Dickinson, Wallace Stevens, Thoreau, and William Carlos Williams. If the poet is no longer living, or if a contemporary prefers not to write in the book themselves, she uses a simple calligraphy, so that the writing remains visually neutral.

        Heart Songs and Other Stories

Scribner, NY 1988 - This copy has been SIGNED by E. Annie Proulx on the title page! A beautiful copy of the highly honored author's 1st book of fiction - a wonderful collection of stories. The nine stories in "heart Songs" introduced a unique, new voice in contemporary American fiction. The settings are small New England blue-collar towns; the characters are the dispossessed working class confronted by a young rural bougeoisie; and the themes are the traps people set out for one another, out of malice or naivete, premeditaqtion or misunderstaning. As Publisher's Weekly said at the time "An authoritative debut.Appropriately related in clear, tightly honed prose, each of these stories ends with a visceral punch. Proulx is definitely a writer to watch." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Dexter Dickinson / Untitled Science Fiction Original Art 1988

1988 - 1988: Dexter Dickinson, untitled original painting, science fiction scene. Likely cover art, but not known to me, with certainty, to have been published. Exposed image size withing matting (see scans) is 11 1/2" x 8 1/2". Remains in the original matting and shrink wrap in which it was placed at time of purchase, in the late eighties. Please note that scans and digital photos are taken through the shrink wrap at this time. Per label on reverse, the matting and wrapping were executed by Eclipse in Seattle, WA at that time. Dexter Dickinson - possibly, but not with certainty, a pseudonym for another artist - executed at least several cover art paintings for the science fiction genre. This work is of a pyramidal city rising out of an alien ocean, with a very large, powerful light beam projecting upward toward space from it, on a planet with two moons, all depicted at dusk.         Schirra's Space

Quinlan Press, Boston, MA 1988 - Inscribed "To Devin M. Roth / Wally Schirra" on first blank page in blue ink. Born March 12, 1923, Hackensack, NJ, USA. U.S. astronaut who manned the Mercury Sigma 7 (1962) and was command pilot of Gemini 6 (1965), which made the first rendezvous in space. Schirra began flying at 13 and became a naval aviator after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD, in 1945. He flew 90 missions in the Korean War. A test pilot, he was one of the original seven astronauts named in 1959. On October 3, 1962, Schirra orbited the Earth six times in Sigma 7. His scheduled flight with Thomas P. Stafford in Gemini 6 was postponed twice because of technical problems. Gemini 6 was finally launched on December 15, 1965, 11 days after Gemini 7. Schirra successfully rendezvoused with Gemini 7 , maneuvering to within one foot of the craft. Schirra commanded the Apollo 7 flight (Oct. 11-22, 1968), accompanied by Donn Eisele and R. Walter Cunningham, on the first manned Apollo mission. They tested the guidance and control systems and the restarting capability of the rocket engines for future lunar flights. After retiring from the Navy and the space program in 1969, Schirra held executive positions in private firms in Colorado. Dust jacket has minor wear on corners, otherwise in fine condition. 38 pages of b/w photographs. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Nach Der Natur (From Nature)

Nordlingen, Germany: Franz Greno, 1988. Fine in a Near Fine dustjacket. Bound in full green cloth. Both the spine and the front panel are stamped in black. Quarto. 99pps., plus six double-page photos (including the endpapers) by Thomas Becker. An excellent, collector's-quality copy: clean, tight, square, and bright. All tips are sharp. The text is immaculate; no apparent reading wear and no previous ownership markings. The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, has a small closed tear at the top of the front panel. A long poem in three sections. Sebald's first book-length, literary publication -- issued at a time when he had little public profile, with only a couple of academic pieces to his credit along with poems in various periodicals. Purchase with confidence: all books, gradings, and descriptions are rendered the care of a genuine bibliophile. Satisfaction guaranteed or all costs you've incurred will be promptly refunded. Thanks for your interest in Nooks Of Books.
