A small archive of material (SIGNED What Mad Pursuit, Several TLS) between Nobel Laureate Francis Crick and Meyer Friedman

New York: Basic Books, Inc. 1988. First Edition. The archive includes: 1) Francis Crick INSCRIBED 1st edition of his book "What Mad Pursuit" dated October 1988 2) A check to Francis Crick dated 11/3/88 in payment for the book, ENDORSED by Crick on the back. 3) August 18, 1993 TLS (typed letter signed) signed "Francis" indicating he had no information about the 2 kinds of reprints available for his 1953 paper, and suggesting that the writer contact Jim Watson or Maurice Wilkins "in case they can remember". And finally, 4) a TLS signed "Francis H. Crick" giving the writer permission to publish a photograph the writer had taken of Crick in the late 1980s when they were visiting. The book is in Very Good condition, the letters in Fine condition noting folds for mailing, and the check in Very Good condition noting a paperclip impression on one side, and a crease for mailing in the middle. In each case, Crick's signature is clean, bold and legible. Boards. The Discovery of the Structure of DNA remains one of the most significant discoveries of the 20th century. Francis Crick, James Watson, Rosalind Franklin and RG Gosling all had a significant hand in the discovery. Watson, Crick, and Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1962 for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nuclear acids and its significance for information transfer in living material. This archive contains correspondence between Francis Crick and Meyer Friedman. Meyer Friedman is probably best known as the co-developer the theory of the "Type A" behavior, and who opened up the field of inquiry into the mind-heart (or mind-body) connection that has become a part of our popular culture. In 1988 Crick sent Meyer a copy of his autobiography, "What Mad Pursuit." Friedman responded with a check: "I admit I also sent him the check to get his signature on its reverse side. I was fortunate." The endorsed check he kept. Later Meyer asked Crick about offprints, and still later for permission to publish his photograph.A nice grouping, and worthwhile addition to any collection of 20th century medicine. It is worth noting that the two scientists couldn't be more different in approach. Meyer looked at mind-body, or the macro or "top-down" of how we work as humans. Crick looked at the micro, or "inside-out" of how we work. Even given that separation in approaches, Friedman realized how important Crick's work was to become and sought to collect some material for himself. Very Good.

Knuttel 3496; Van der Haar, Schatkamer 298; cf. W.J. op 't Hof, "Willem Teellinck in het licht zijner geschriften (31)", in: Nadere Reformatie XII (1988), p. 109-115. First edition of one of the puritan and edifying works by the reformed minister of Middelburg Willem Teellinck (1579-1629). The title would translate in English as: Zephania's warning, to prevent the destruction of Jerusalem; also fit for the present condition of our dear country. With his many works Teellinck intended to introduce into the Republic the spirit of English pietist Puritanism. On the one hand he tried to stimulate personal piety, on the other hand he levelled criticism at various ethical and religious abuses and errors, and aimed for a complete reform in all areas of life as certainly also in the present work. With his books he has exerted a truly enormous influence on theologians and parishioners of the 17th century alike. Teellinck is therefore generally seen as the father of the influential reformed pietist movement within the Dutch Reformed Church, known as the "Further Reformation".With manuscript annotations and proverbs on the fly-leaves, dated 1770. Some marginal waterstains, otherwise in good condition.

Zweiwochenschrift. Hrsg. von Hans Leybold (Nr. 5 hrsg. von Franz Jung). 1. Jahrg., Hefte 1-5. [Alles Erschienene.]

Gegen literaturbehaftete Oberlehrer, kunstsinnige Kritiker, allgemeine Rundschauer. In summa: Gegen Zuständliches. Und fügte hinzu:Nichtschriftsteller heraus! Keine Literaten sollen gezüchtet werden. Da hatte man die Revolution! Da war sie. 20 Jahre alt war der Kerl. Sehr hurtig. Und paffte einfach drauf los.? (Die weissen Blätter. Jahrg. 2, Heft 4. S. 525.) - Die fünf Nummern enthalten u.a. Beiträge von Hugo Ball, Johannes R. Becher, Ernst Blass, Franz Blei, Max Brod, Leonhard Frank, Iwan Goll, Walter Hasenclever, Emmy Hennings, Kurt Hiller, Jakob van Hoddis, Richard Huelsenbeck, Franz Jung, Klabund, Else Lasker-Schüler, Alfred Lichtenstein, Erich Mühsam, Robert Musil, Karl Otten, Ludwig Rubiner, René Schickele. Nr. 1 an Rücken u. Seitenkanten mit kleinen dezenten Restaurierungen u. Buchhandelsstempel, Umschlag von Nr. 1 u. Nr. 4 mit schwachen Notizen in Blei. Insgesamt gut erhaltene Folge der seltenen Reihe. - Raabe, Zeitschriften 16. - Raabe, Kat. Marbach 25.3. - Jentsch 11. - Dietzel/Hügel 2498. - Schlawe S. 14f. - Dada global S. 88. - Verkauf 181. - Akademie der Künste, Kat. 154, II 55. - Fähnders 34 u. 300. - Bolliger VI, 12.
