        César antechrist.

(Paris), Edition du Mercure de France, 1895. 12°. 146 + 8 S. OBrosch. m. OSch. EA. In franz. Sprache. Eins von 206 Exemplaren. - Tafel S. 64 m. Einriss, OSch. m. geringen Fehlstellen am unteren Kapital, kl. Wurmspur, etw. gelockert, Seiten unaufgeschnitten. - Jarry`s play Caesar Antichrist (1895) drew on this movement for material. This is a work that bridges the gap between serious symbolic meaning and the type of critical absurdity with which Jarry would soon become associated. Using the biblical Book of Revelation as a point of departure, Caesar Antichrist presents a parallel world of extreme formal symbolism in which Christ, Jesus of Nazareth is resurrected not as an agent of spirituality but as an agent of the Roman Empire that seeks to dominate spirituality. It is a unique narrative that effectively links the domination of the soul to contemporaneous advances in the field of Egyptology such as the 1894 excavation the Narmer Palette, an ancient artifact used for situating the rebus within hermeneutics. - Das zweite von Jarry veröffentlichte Buch mit dessen Illustrationen und sorgfältig ausgewählten Holzschnitten vers.         Op. 77, nos. 2 and 3]. Mein Garten; Geisternähe. [Score]. Autograph musical manuscripts of two songs. Unsigned.

      - McCorkle p. 334 ("Autograph c"). Catalog of Dermota collection (1988), 471 (with facsimile of p. [2]). Stargardt catalogue 583 (November 11, 1967), 761a (with facsimile of p. [2]). Kinsky: Manuskripte, Briefe, Dokumente von Scarlatti bis Stravinsky: Katalog der Musikautographensammlung Louis Koch (Stuttgart: Krais, 1953), pp. 223-24. "In the catalog of Schumann's works, Mein Garten (My Garden, Opus 77, No. 2.) is dated 1850. Scholars believe, with good reason, that it was based on sketches, or other material not used elsewhere, and to which Schumann now returned. Evidence in support of this view is the similarity to Chopin's Nocturne in G Minor (a composer after whom Schumann often modelled himself) and a quotation from Beethoven's An die Ferne Geliebte, dear to Schumann. This quotation occurs at the words "Ob sie heimisch ist hinieden." Its simple melodic line is supported by a simple accompaniment. In a modulation to F major, dreamy and full of longing, Schumann hints at something not related to the poem: hapiness has been found."In Halm's Geisternähe (Your Spirit Near, Op. 77, No. 3) Schumann again returns to a subject that occupied him from time to time throughout his life: the beloved one's marriage to another. This song, as with many of his later songs, shows but slight identification of the composer with the texts being set. His nervous, overly sensitive psyche at best supplied an elegiac echo. This detachment seems to reflect the composer's growing withdrawal, eventually leading to silence and escape." Fischer-Dieskau: Robert Schumann Words and Music, pp. 178-79.The two songs were first published by Whistling in Leipzig in 1851 within volume 3 of the anthology Robert Schumann: Lieder und Gesänge. The manuscripts of both songs show considerable evidence of the composer's compositional process and are important sources for the works. 4 pp. of a bifolium (303 x 229 mm), each song 2 pp. in length. Notated in brown ink and pencil on 16-stave printed music paper.Mein Garten, with text by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben) First draft in ink, on three staves with accompaniment, later completed and corrected in pencil. Caption title, "Mein Garten," and text credits, "Hoffmann v. Fallersleben," in pencil to head of first page. Geisternähe with text by Friedrich Halm (i.e., Eligius Franz Joseph Freiherr von Münch- Bellinghausen). A working manuscript in ink with corrections in pencil. Complete. Title "Geisternähe;" text credits "F. Halm;" and earlier crossed- out title "Ewige Liebe" in ink to head of first page. Date in ink in Robert Schumann's hand conclusion of music "d. 18ten Juli 1850."With an autograph inscription in the hand of Clara Schumann to the foot of the second page of Geisternähe: "Handschrift Robert Schumanns. An Frau Adele Preyer zur freundlichen Erinnerung. Mai 1866. Clara Schumann."Provenance: Adele Preyer, to whom Clara Schumann gave the manuscript in 1866 in Bonn; the Louis Koch Collection, Frankfurt; Koch's heirs, the Floersheim family, Switzerland; the tenor Anton Dermota (1910- 1989), former member of the Vienna Staatsoper; an unknown private collector in Vienna.Slightly worn; small tears to spine; creased at folds; ink stain to lower margin. In very good condition overall.

        WITTGENSTEIN'S MISTRESS

(Elmwood Park, IL): The Dalkey Archive Press, (1988). First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/near fine. 8vo. Original black cloth with gold gilt spine titles. Near fine in like jacket. A touch of sunning to top edge. Trace rubbing to jacket. Else sharp, clean, and sound. INSCRIBED by Markson to noted sportswriter Larry Ritter: "NYC 1990 / For Larry Ritter - / Once of the great good people of this world - / with all deep affection. / (Not to mention in honor of Margo Adams and Ruth Steinhagen) / Hey, all best wishes / ever! - / Dave Markson." An extraordinary association copy of the novel David Foster Wallace once described as “pretty much the high point of experimental fiction in this country.” Inscribed to sportswriter Lawrence Ritter, author of what is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest books on baseball: THE GLORY OF THEIR TIMES (1966), a collection of interviews with turn-of-the-century ballplayers. Red Barber, Stephen Jay Gould, and others consider it the best baseball book ever written and the L.A. Times has said “Ritter essentially invented the field of baseball scholarship with this oral history.” In interviews Markson called Ritter “a dear friend” and both were regulars at the famed NYC writers bar The LionÂ’s Head. Likewise, Markson was a life-long baseball fanatic and references to the game can be found in almost every one of his novels. WITTGENSTEINÂ’S MISTRESS is no exception. Narrated by Kate, an unreliable (and probably mad) protagonist, the book - among its many cul- tural and philosophical allusions - revolves in no small part around baseball writer Donald HonigÂ’s book BASEBALL WHEN THE GRASS WAS REAL (1975). Both Markson and Ritter were close with Honig and they are each thanked - always in tandem - in at least several of HonigÂ’s baseball books (“And, once more, thanks for the invaluable guidance and counsel of David Markson and Larry Ritter” - THE OCTOBER HEROES), including BASEBALL WHEN THE GRASS WAS REAL (“[...] the steady counsel of David Markson and Larry Ritter”). Further, Ritter was the dedicatee of that book, which was in many ways was a sequel to his earlier classic, undertaken with RitterÂ’s blessing and largely at his sugges- tion. This wasnÂ’t the first time MarksonÂ’s baseball friends appeared in one of his novels. SPRINGERÂ’S PROGRESS (1977) slyly included reference to both men in a telephone conversation (“Larry Ritter or Don Honig out in back?” p. 7). With its allusion to two infamous baseball femme fetales (one Wade BoggsÂ’ mistress, the other the shooter who inspired THE NATURAL), a revealing inscription. Taken together, an exceptional and important association and one of the best copies of this landmark book we can imagine.

Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Volume VIII, Never Despair, 1945-1965, inscribed by the author to "indefatigable Churchill literary assistant" Denis Kelly

London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1988. First edition. Hardcover. This is the British first edition of the final volume of ChurchillÂ’s Official Biography, an important association copy inscribed by the author to “indefatigable Churchill literary assistant” Denis Kelly. The seven-line inscription inked in blue on the front free endpaper reads: “To Denis - | who made such a marvelous | contribution, both to his books | and to mine - | from | Martin | 12th July 1988”. Denis Kelly (1916-1990) served during the Second World War first in the Surrey and Sussex Yeomanry and then in the Indian Mountain Artillery in India and Burma (1941-45). Though he was called to the bar in 1942, after the war Kelly joined ChurchillÂ’s literary team, first as an archivist, then as a literary assistant on ChurchillÂ’s war memoirs. On 14 May 1947, Churchill met the young barrister at Chartwell. Showing Kelly a cellar “stacked from floor to ceiling” Churchill tasked him thus: “Your task, my boy, is to make Cosmos out of Chaos.” Kelly approached the task with not only diligence and competence, but no small reverence: “I realised that I was handling the personal papers of a man who had experienced and shaped the history of the world in the last fifty years…” (Gilbert, Vol. VIII, p.331.) Ultimately, KellyÂ’s assistance went far beyond organization of ChurchillÂ’s papers. Kelly became a vital part of ChurchillÂ’s literary team for the rest of ChurchillÂ’s productive life as an author, not only assisting with The Second World War and A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, but also preparing the abridged, one-volume Memoirs of the Second World War (published 1959). ChurchillÂ’s 10,000 word epilogue to KellyÂ’s abridgement proved his last original writing for a book publication. KellyÂ’s papers, including correspondence with Sir Martin Gilbert, now reside in the Churchill Archives Centre at Churchill College, Cambridge. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill was initiated by his son Randolph Churchill (1911-1968) but completed by Martin Gilbert (1936-2015). British first editions of the eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. This final volume covers the last twenty years of Churchill's life - 1945 to 1965, including all the years Kelly worked closely with Churchill. Kelly figures prominently throughout the book, with 60 individual references to him in the index. This volumeÂ’s events span the period from Demobilization in late 1945, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through his second Premiership (1951-1955) into a time when Churchill passes "into a living national memorial" of the time he has lived and the Nation, Empire, and free world he has served. Volumes I-V of the British first edition were bound in red cloth with red topstain and solid color dust jackets. Volumes VI-VIII were issued by the publisher in two different options - one with a different color binding, no topstain and an illustrated dust jacket and one with red cloth binding, red topstain and a solid color dust jacket. This inscribed association copy is the publisherÂ’s illustrated dust jacket issue, very good plus in a near fine dust jacket. The khaki color binding is square and tight with sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and only minor wear to extremities. The contents remain bright with just a trivial hint of soiling and spotting confined to the page edges. The only previous ownership marks other than the authorÂ’s inscription are the words “(Kelly – see p.1409)” in pencil just below the first line of the authorÂ’s inscription and the words “See inscription by the author, inside front cover.” Inked just below Dennis KellyÂ’s highlighted name in the Index at p.1409. Whether these comments are in KellyÂ’s hand or that of someone else we are unable to determine. The dust jacket remains clean and complete, with an unclipped front flap and only light wear at the spine ends and corners. The dust jacket is protected with a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A301h

Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Volume VIII, Never Despair, 1945-1965, inscribed by the author to "indefatigable Churchill literary assistant" Denis Kelly

William Heinemann Ltd., London 1988 - This is the British first edition of the final volume of Churchill’s Official Biography, an important association copy inscribed by the author to "indefatigable Churchill literary assistant" Denis Kelly. The seven-line inscription inked in blue on the front free endpaper reads: "To Denis - | who made such a marvelous | contribution, both to his books | and to mine - | from | Martin | 12th July 1988". Denis Kelly (1916-1990) served during the Second World War first in the Surrey and Sussex Yeomanry and then in the Indian Mountain Artillery in India and Burma (1941-45). Though he was called to the bar in 1942, after the war Kelly joined Churchill’s literary team, first as an archivist, then as a literary assistant on Churchill’s war memoirs. On 14 May 1947, Churchill met the young barrister at Chartwell. Showing Kelly a cellar "stacked from floor to ceiling" Churchill tasked him thus: "Your task, my boy, is to make Cosmos out of Chaos." Kelly approached the task with not only diligence and competence, but no small reverence: "I realised that I was handling the personal papers of a man who had experienced and shaped the history of the world in the last fifty years " (Gilbert, Vol. VIII, p.331.) Ultimately, Kelly’s assistance went far beyond organization of Churchill’s papers. Kelly became a vital part of Churchill’s literary team for the rest of Churchill’s productive life as an author, not only assisting with The Second World War and A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, but also preparing the abridged, one-volume Memoirs of the Second World War (published 1959). Churchill’s 10,000 word epilogue to Kelly’s abridgement proved his last original writing for a book publication. Kelly’s papers, including correspondence with Sir Martin Gilbert, now reside in the Churchill Archives Centre at Churchill College, Cambridge. This volume’s events span the period from Demobilization in late 1945, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through his second Premiership (1951-1955) into a time when Churchill passes "into a living national memorial" of the time he has lived and the Nation, Empire, and free world he has served. This inscribed association copy is the publisher’s illustrated dust jacket issue, very good plus in a near fine dust jacket. The khaki color binding is square and tight with sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and only minor wear to extremities. The contents remain bright with just a trivial hint of soiling and spotting confined to the page edges. The only previous ownership marks other than the author’s inscription are the words "(Kelly – see p.1409)" in pencil just below the first line of the author’s inscription and the words "See inscription by the author, inside front cover." Inked just below Dennis Kelly’s highlighted name in the Index at p.1409. Whether these comments are in Kelly’s hand or that of someone else we are unable to determine. The dust jacket remains clean and complete, with an unclipped front flap and only light wear at the spine ends and corners. The dust jacket is protected with a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A301h [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

THE BIRDS OF NEW GUINEA and the adjacent Papuan Islands, including many new species recently discovered in Australia. Volume I (one) [Birds of Prey; Birds of Paradise; Crows]

Melbourne: Hill House. Very Good. 1988. Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover. Elephant Folio 0947352015 First limited facsimile edition thus, (No. 434 of 750 copies). Original brown-red Japanese Saifu cloth gilt. Pp. vi, plus 56 fine coloured plates with accompanying text. Endpapers with a repeating pattern of BM library stamps. Binding very good with a little general wear, front board lightly marked. Contents clean and tight, unmarked. One of series of remarkably exact same-size facsimile of the original in the British Library, printed by offset lithography on acid-free matt art paper and hand-bound. The Hill House series contained the only authentic full-size facsimiles of the works of John Gould - this volume is one of the original printings and now out of print. Publisher's blurb thus "They are not reproductions, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the B.M.(N.H.) originals. Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. boards covered in special Japanese Saifu cloth, very slightly marked, gold stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Each copy is hand inspected by the printer's quality control officer, individually numbered on the inside front board... Thus, no two copies are exactly the same. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies, later production runs have not exceeded 300 for world-wide sale. This has been caused by a relative shortage of quality paper, together with the intensive hand-labour involved in their production." This book is held in stock. .

On the Brink of the Precipice

Long Beach, California:: Terry Braunstein,, 1988.. One-of-a-Kind. 5.25 x 7.75" altered book. Original book On the Brink of the Precipice. Paper-cutting and collage. Terry Braunstein: "My bookworks began as collages in pages reminiscent of scrapbooks. Over time the collages became increasingly photographic — the images blending almost seamlessly, though surrealistically. In more recent years I have been working on 'altered books' (artists books made from previously-existing books), that are more sculpture than two-dimensional. The hundreds of pages in these books have been glued together to make only two or three double-page spreads, and they may contain objects and doorways." Using tromp l'oeil effects in three spreads, the first two with an opening to reveal parts of the next panels, On the Brink of the Precipice posits a balancing act that holds dark, or at least threatening, possibilities at bay. It opens to a man and young boy (father and son?) standing on a cliff looking down. Behind them, through a window/doorway in the page, we see a portion of the second spread and a second scene: in a snow-covered valley a skier apparently shoots toward a black horizon. Turning the page, we find the skier is actually plunging into the mouth of a snake, and the black horizon is deep space, where in final performance space a barefooted figure balances on a planet-like sphere — or is it the top of a skull?
