THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE GRAPE - PUBLISHER'S COPY, SIGNED BY JOHN MARTIN

Santa Barbara: Black Sparrow Press, 1988. First Edition Thus. First Printing. Fine in a Fine acetate dustjacket. A lovely copy in the deluxe, floral patterned quarter binding normally reserved for the 26 Lettered Copies. This is the Publisher's Copy, so stated on the colophon, where John Martin has added his signature. Though Fante is now widely heralded as one of the quintessential Los Angeles novelists, by the 1970's his work had fallen into relative obscurity. It wasn't until his work was re-discovered by Charles Bukowski, at whose request Martin began to reissue his novels, that his work began to enjoy a revival. Martin went on to reissue all of Fante's out of print novels, in addition to issuing several previously unpublished works. The publisher's own copy, and an exceptional association.

        The Old-time Printer

Xavier Press, Baltimore 1988 - vi, 18pp. Samuel Clemens's account of his formative time spent as a printer's apprentice, presented as a speech at a dinner for New York printers. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Clemens and a vignette depicting a compositor setting type. This copy is in a designer binding by the Italian-British bookbinder Paolo Taddeo. Onlays of salmon, grey, and black morocco form the shape of a piece of lead type, outlined in palladium-leaf tooling, creating a symmetrical design on each of the covers. The artist chose the letter H for his design, citing the letter's visual stability and steadiness, "with both feet firmly planted on the ground." As someone whose first language is Italian, he also notes that his selection of the letter H is "controversial," since it is not pronounced in his native language and gives him difficulty in spoken English. However, he writes, "in my mother tongue it's a letter of vital importance in the way that it changes the sounds of the consonants it attaches to." Housed in a clamshell box that contains a drawer for the two pieces of seven- and ten-point type included with the book. Taddeo was elected a Licentiate of Designer Bookbinders in 2013 and has twice won the Arthur Johnson Award in the organization's annual competition. (2 1/2 by 2; 65x53mm).

THE LIFE AND OPINIONS OF TRISTRAM SHANDY, GENTLEMAN- DELUXE LIMITED ARION PRESS EDITION ILLUSTRATED AND SIGNED BY JOHN BALDESSARI

(BALDESSARI, JOHN). Sterne, Laurence, Melvyn New & John Baldessari. THE LIFE AND OPINIONS OF TRISTRAM SHANDY, GENTLEMAN- DELUXE LIMITED ARION PRESS EDITION ILLUSTRATED AND SIGNED BY JOHN BALDESSARI. Signed by the Artist. San Francisco: Arion Press, 1988. First Edition 1/400. Stout 8vo. Full Leather in Slipcase. Livre D'Artiste. Fine/No Jackets - As Issued. 624 + 46 + np, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. This twenty-sixth publication of Andrew Hoyem's esteemed Arion Press is a beautifully constructed and executed hand-letterpress reprinting of Lawrence Sterne's classic of English literature, "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman" that has been newly-illustrated by the noted Conceptual artist John Baldessari. Remaining faithful to the delightful typographic eccentricities and variant spellings of Sterne's own self-published editions from the 1760s, the main text of the novel has been set in Caslon Old Style - the typeface utilized by Sterne for the original printings - and bound in a single, substantial three-quarter green goatskin over lovely hand-marbled boards volume. This is accompanied by literary scholar Melvyn New's informative forty-six page essay "Lawrence Sterne and Tristram Shandy" separately bound in boards. The crowning achievement of this ambitious undertaking however is the third volume which contains John Baldessari's wry visual commentary of photo-collaged and altered found photographs and film stills in the form of a lengthy accordion-fold leporello that is anchored between green gilt-stamped boards. The three volumes are housed in a gilt-stamped green paper over board slipcase along with the additional Arion Press pre-publication prospectus laid in. A brand new, most handsome example of standard edition of this exquisite, uncommon item limited to four hundred unnumbered copies BOLDLY SIGNED "John Baldessari" in pencil on the colophon of illustrated volume, as issued. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         Les mystères templiers

      - Paris, Robert Laffont, 1988.

        Bonjour Monsieur Le Corbusier

Hans Grieshader 1988, Zurich - 111 111 pp., illustrated throughout. FRENCH TEXT. The deluxe limited edition. One of 150 copies in a printed white slipcase, with a signed photograph of Le Corbusier by Doisneau in it's own card folder. Robert Doisneau was employed as an in-house photographer by Renault, a job he willingly quit to work free-lance. He was the photographer of the RÃ sistance, documenting both the occupation and the liberation of Paris. His commissioned works for the Racho Agency put his name on the map, but it was his images of Paris streets and street life that made him world-famous. Doisneau repeatedly portrayed prominent personalities of his time (an example is the mesmerizing portrait of Pablo Picasso with fingers made of cake dough), but only the best-informed experts and most loyal followers were aware of the series of portraits of Le Corbusier made in the early 1950s. In 1988 a small extract of this series was published in a then-groundbreaking edition, that presented Doisneau's images in a luxurious yet still discreet form. Most of the time the architect, painter and sculptor Le Corbusier was painfully aware of the camera watching over him and when concentrated he playfully manipulated the camera by chosing different poses or expressions. Sometimes though, Doisneau was able to catch the modern master at unexpected moments. Reminiscent of his snapshots of Paris life, these images show us the human being that was behind one of the great thinkers and innovators of the 20th century. Fine copy in slipcase.         What Beetle is This?

Long Beach, California:: Terry Braunstein,, 1988.. Edition of 25. 5.5 x 8.4"; 24 pages. Altered "Welcher Käfer ist Das?"book. Photomontage. Hand assembled by the artist. Braunstein substitutes humans for splayed and arranged insects. The effect in playful, pointed, and sometimes painful — and the pain in not from entomologist's pins or chloroform. Noriko Gamblin, Curator, Long Beach Museum of Art (1991): "To create a picture in the way that Terry Braunstein does is, in essence, to reassemble pieces of our familiar world into a surprising, yet convincing, new world. This process entails collecting, classifying, editing, arranging, and rephotographing pictures cut from the pages of magazines and books. That these images already exist in the media, fully loaded with specific associations, is vital to Braunstein's purpose. In recycling the images, she alters their contexts, thus confounding their usual readings and proposing new meanings.... "This idea of relatedness, of perceiving one's station in terms of other stations, is at the core of much of Braunstein's art. Nowhere, however, is it more playfully evident than in her 1988 bookwork What Beetle is This? Based upon a German handbook for beetle identification Welcher Käfer ist Das? this work investigates the nature and function of classification, by juxtaposing pictures of humans with the existing illustrations of beetles. Most of the beetles pictured are impressive, exceeding our modest expectations with their luminous shells and delicate limbs. A few seem unfairly plain by comparison — although not so ungainly as some of the bug-sized, human specimens. Like people, beetles are subject to comparison with an ideal type promoted through the media; unlike people, they do not suffer the humiliations of not measuring up to an impossible standard. The aspiration to perfection is, after all, a human conceit.

[Sketchbook]: Death is as Natural as Rain

[Virginia. circa 1988]. Blank book. Unpaged, approximately 100pp. Black boards with a sticker of The Damned affixed to the front board along with three more stickers on the front pastedown. Very good with moderate wear at the corners, rubbing and a touch of loss at the spine ends. A book filled with more than 200 macabre pen and ink illustrations by what appears to be a tattoo artist/musician from Virginia who signed his work "Fishead." The drawings cover nearly every right-hand page (with a few two-page spreads) consisting of creepy clowns, skulls, wraiths, dragons, mummies/zombies, mermen, and ghouls of all kinds. The drawings run the gamut from crude sketches to finely and fairly skillfully drawn images with several finished with a high level of detail and one partially colored. Interspersed are also notes about a van the artist is saving to buy, along with various names, phone numbers (from across the country), and lines of verse, likely song lyrics. The sketchbook also contains two short holograph text pieces; one about a man forced to serve a drunken but benevolent king and another concerning Muddy Helmet, "the first country, blues, jazz, rockabilly, death rock, classic rock band." An interesting collection of drawing from an unknown aspiring artist and musician. .

ORIGINAL ART: MORE TALES OF UNCLE REMUS - RABBIT MAKES A MONKEY OF LIO

      - PINKNEY,JERRY (HARRIS,JOEL CHANDLER)illus. ORIGINAL ART: MORE TALES OF UNCLE REMUS - RABBIT MAKES A MONKEY OF LION - by Joel Chandler Harris. We are pleased to offer this art by Pinkney used in his edition of More Tales of Uncle Remus published in 1988 by Dial. This is a great watercolor that appears as a double page spread on p. 6-7. The image is 17" wide x 10 1/2" high on art paper 18 1/2 x 11 1/2" and is signed. Rabbit is seen emerging from his house in the tree trunk and he is talking to a bird on a branch. Jerry Pinkney has been illustrating children's books since 1964 and has the rare distinction of being the recipient of three Caldecott Honor Medals -- in 1995 for John Henry by Julius Lester (Dial), in 1990 for The Talking Eggs by Robert D. San Souci (Dial) and in 1989 for Mirandy and Brother Wind by Patricia C. McKissack (Knopf). He has won the Coretta Scott King Award three times and a Coretta Scott King Honor twice. Mr. Pinkney has received four awards for his body of work: the Drexel Citation for Children's Literature, the David McCord Award , the Philadelphia School of Art and Design Alumni Award, and the Keene State College Children's Literature Festival Award. In addition to his work on children's books, he is an extremely successful artist who has had eleven one-man retrospectives at venues ranging from the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists to the Art Institute of Chicago. His current one-man show entitled, "Building Bridges, the Art of Jerry Pinkney" was organized by the Pittsburgh Children's Museum and will be traveling through 1998. Mr. Pinkney has illustrated for a wide variety of clients, including National Geographic , the National Parks Service, the U.S. Postal Service, the American Library Association and the Association of Booksellers for Children. Many of Mr. Pinkney's children's books celebrate multicultural and African American themes. 'Working on both the Uncle Remus tales and John Henry has shown me an important link between pivotal and opposite African American folk heroes. Brer Rabbit, the sly trickster, originated during slavery and was the first African American folk hero. Slaves who wanted to get the better of their masters needed to be cunning and sly -- hence the trickster role.' " (from Pengui [Attributes: Signed Copy]
