Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Volume VIII, Never Despair, 1945-1965, inscribed by the author to "indefatigable Churchill literary assistant" Denis Kelly

William Heinemann Ltd., London 1988 - This is the British first edition of the final volume of Churchill’s Official Biography, an important association copy inscribed by the author to "indefatigable Churchill literary assistant" Denis Kelly. The seven-line inscription inked in blue on the front free endpaper reads: "To Denis - | who made such a marvelous | contribution, both to his books | and to mine - | from | Martin | 12th July 1988". Denis Kelly (1916-1990) served during the Second World War first in the Surrey and Sussex Yeomanry and then in the Indian Mountain Artillery in India and Burma (1941-45). Though he was called to the bar in 1942, after the war Kelly joined Churchill’s literary team, first as an archivist, then as a literary assistant on Churchill’s war memoirs. On 14 May 1947, Churchill met the young barrister at Chartwell. Showing Kelly a cellar "stacked from floor to ceiling" Churchill tasked him thus: "Your task, my boy, is to make Cosmos out of Chaos." Kelly approached the task with not only diligence and competence, but no small reverence: "I realised that I was handling the personal papers of a man who had experienced and shaped the history of the world in the last fifty years " (Gilbert, Vol. VIII, p.331.) Ultimately, Kelly’s assistance went far beyond organization of Churchill’s papers. Kelly became a vital part of Churchill’s literary team for the rest of Churchill’s productive life as an author, not only assisting with The Second World War and A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, but also preparing the abridged, one-volume Memoirs of the Second World War (published 1959). Churchill’s 10,000 word epilogue to Kelly’s abridgement proved his last original writing for a book publication. Kelly’s papers, including correspondence with Sir Martin Gilbert, now reside in the Churchill Archives Centre at Churchill College, Cambridge. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill was initiated by his son Randolph Churchill (1911-1968) but completed by Martin Gilbert (1936-2015). British first editions of the eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. This final volume covers the last twenty years of Churchill's life - 1945 to 1965, including all the years Kelly worked closely with Churchill. Kelly figures prominently throughout the book, with 60 individual references to him in the index. This volume’s events span the period from Demobilization in late 1945, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through his second Premiership (1951-1955) into a time when Churchill passes "into a living national memorial" of the time he has lived and the Nation, Empire, and free world he has served. Volumes I-V of the British first edition were bound in red cloth with red topstain and solid color dust jackets. Volumes VI-VIII were issued by the publisher in two different options - one with a different color binding, no topstain and an illustrated dust jacket and one with red cloth binding, red topstain and a solid color dust jacket. This inscribed association copy is the publisher’s illustrated dust jacket issue, very good plus in a near fine dust jacket. The khaki color binding is square and tight with sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and only minor wear to extremities. The contents remain bright with just a trivial hint of soiling and spotting confined to the page edges. The only previous ownership marks other than the author’s inscription are the words "(Kelly – see p.1409)" in pencil just below the first line of the author’s inscription and the words "See inscription by the author, inside front cover." Inked just below Dennis Kelly’s highlighted name in the Index at p.1409. Whether these comments are in Kelly’s hand or that of someone else we are unable to determine. The dust jacket remains clean and complete, with an unclipped front flap and only light wear at the spine ends and corners. The dust jacket is protected with a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A301h [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

THE BIRDS OF NEW GUINEA and the adjacent Papuan Islands, including many new species recently discovered in Australia. Volume I (one) [Birds of Prey; Birds of Paradise; Crows]

Melbourne: Hill House. Very Good. 1988. Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover. Elephant Folio 0947352015 First limited facsimile edition thus, (No. 434 of 750 copies). Original brown-red Japanese Saifu cloth gilt. Pp. vi, plus 56 fine coloured plates with accompanying text. Endpapers with a repeating pattern of BM library stamps. Binding very good with a little general wear, front board lightly marked. Contents clean and tight, unmarked. One of series of remarkably exact same-size facsimile of the original in the British Library, printed by offset lithography on acid-free matt art paper and hand-bound. The Hill House series contained the only authentic full-size facsimiles of the works of John Gould - this volume is one of the original printings and now out of print. Publisher's blurb thus "They are not reproductions, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the B.M.(N.H.) originals. Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. boards covered in special Japanese Saifu cloth, very slightly marked, gold stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Each copy is hand inspected by the printer's quality control officer, individually numbered on the inside front board... Thus, no two copies are exactly the same. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies, later production runs have not exceeded 300 for world-wide sale. This has been caused by a relative shortage of quality paper, together with the intensive hand-labour involved in their production." This book is held in stock. .

On the Brink of the Precipice

Long Beach, California:: Terry Braunstein,, 1988.. One-of-a-Kind. 5.25 x 7.75" altered book. Original book On the Brink of the Precipice. Paper-cutting and collage. Terry Braunstein: "My bookworks began as collages in pages reminiscent of scrapbooks. Over time the collages became increasingly photographic — the images blending almost seamlessly, though surrealistically. In more recent years I have been working on 'altered books' (artists books made from previously-existing books), that are more sculpture than two-dimensional. The hundreds of pages in these books have been glued together to make only two or three double-page spreads, and they may contain objects and doorways." Using tromp l'oeil effects in three spreads, the first two with an opening to reveal parts of the next panels, On the Brink of the Precipice posits a balancing act that holds dark, or at least threatening, possibilities at bay. It opens to a man and young boy (father and son?) standing on a cliff looking down. Behind them, through a window/doorway in the page, we see a portion of the second spread and a second scene: in a snow-covered valley a skier apparently shoots toward a black horizon. Turning the page, we find the skier is actually plunging into the mouth of a snake, and the black horizon is deep space, where in final performance space a barefooted figure balances on a planet-like sphere — or is it the top of a skull?

Unpaginated (100 pp.), with 43 black-and-white plates beautifully printed on heavy coated paper by Mitsumura Printing Co., Ltd., Japan. 10-1/8 x 13-1/4 inches. Published on the occasion of the 1988 exhibition "Hiroshi Sugimoto" at Sonnabend Gallery, New York, Sagacho Exhibit Space, Tokyo and Zeito Photo Salon, Tokyo. Near Fine (a faint 3-inch crease to the lower left corner of the rear cover and a stray linear abrasion on the rear cover, light wear to the extremities), in Near Fine dust jacket (damp stain at heel of spine, 1/8-inch puncture to spine, slight surface wear and foxing to the interior, mostly along the top edge, light wear to the extremities and some light soiling, mostly on the rear panel). Sugimoto's first monograph, this exhibition catalogue introduced readers to the three most significant bodies of work he has produced since the late-1970s.From the artist (on Dioramas): "Upon first arriving in New York in 1974, I did the tourist thing. Eventually I visited the Natural History Museum, where I made a curious discovery: the stuffed animals positioned before painted backdrops looked utterly fake, yet by taking a quick peek with one eye closed, all perspective vanished, and suddenly they looked very real. I'd found a way to see the world as a camera does. However fake the subject, once photographed, it's as good as real."On Theaters: "I'm a habitual self-interlocutor. Around the time I started photographing at the Natural History Museum, one evening I had a near-hallucinatory vision. The question-and-answer session that led up to this vision went something like this: Suppose you shoot a whole movie in a single frame? And the answer: You get a shining screen. Immediately I sprang into action, experimenting toward realizing this vision. Dressed up as a tourist, I walked into a cheap cinema in the East Village with a large-format camera. As soon as the movie started, I fixed the shutter at a wide-open aperture, and two hours later when the movie finished, I clicked the shutter closed. That evening, I developed the film, and the vision exploded behind my eyes."On Seascapes: "Water and air. So very commonplace are these substances, they hardly attract attention -- and yet they vouchsafe our very existence. The beginnings of life are shrouded in myth: Let there be water and air. Living phenomena spontaneously generated from water and air in the presence of light, though that could just as easily suggest random coincidence as a Deity. Let's just say that there happened to be a planet with water and air in our solar system, and moreover at precisely the right distance from the sun for the temperatures required to coax forth life. While hardly inconceivable that at least one such planet should exist in the vast reaches of universe, we search in vain for another similar example. Mystery of mysteries, water and air are right there before us in the sea. Every time I view the sea, I feel a calming sense of security, as if visiting my ancestral home; I embark on a voyage of seeing." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1988. Octavo. Original black boards, titles gilt to spine. With the dust jacket. A fine copy in the bright jacket. First edition, second impression, with a printed label from the 1988 Booker Prize Shortlist tipped-in to the front free endpaper, signed by the author and bearing the logo of the Sunday Times, who were that year's sponsors. It is likely that copies of Utz with these slips were distributed at the 1988 Booker Prize dinner. We know of only two other copies with signed labels, and have not handled any other books from that year's shortlist with these Sunday Times-sponsored slips. This is the only iteration of Utz with the author's signature, as Chatwin was dying at the time of publication. Scarce.

A lovely copy in the deluxe, floral patterned quarter binding normally reserved for the 26 Lettered Copies. This is the Publisher's Copy, so stated on the colophon, where John Martin has added his signature. Though Fante is now widely heralded as one of the quintessential Los Angeles novelists, by the 1970's his work had fallen into relative obscurity. It wasn't until his work was re-discovered by Charles Bukowski, at whose request Martin began to reissue his novels, that his work began to enjoy a revival. Martin went on to reissue all of Fante's out of print novels, in addition to issuing several previously unpublished works. The publisher's own copy, and an exceptional association.

        The Old-time Printer

Xavier Press, Baltimore 1988 - vi, 18pp. Samuel Clemens's account of his formative time spent as a printer's apprentice, presented as a speech at a dinner for New York printers. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Clemens and a vignette depicting a compositor setting type. This copy is in a designer binding by the Italian-British bookbinder Paolo Taddeo. Onlays of salmon, grey, and black morocco form the shape of a piece of lead type, outlined in palladium-leaf tooling, creating a symmetrical design on each of the covers. The artist chose the letter H for his design, citing the letter's visual stability and steadiness, "with both feet firmly planted on the ground." As someone whose first language is Italian, he also notes that his selection of the letter H is "controversial," since it is not pronounced in his native language and gives him difficulty in spoken English. However, he writes, "in my mother tongue it's a letter of vital importance in the way that it changes the sounds of the consonants it attaches to." Housed in a clamshell box that contains a drawer for the two pieces of seven- and ten-point type included with the book. Taddeo was elected a Licentiate of Designer Bookbinders in 2013 and has twice won the Arthur Johnson Award in the organization's annual competition. (2 1/2 by 2; 65x53mm).

(BALDESSARI, JOHN). Sterne, Laurence, Melvyn New & John Baldessari. THE LIFE AND OPINIONS OF TRISTRAM SHANDY, GENTLEMAN- DELUXE LIMITED ARION PRESS EDITION ILLUSTRATED AND SIGNED BY JOHN BALDESSARI. Signed by the Artist. San Francisco: Arion Press, 1988. First Edition 1/400. Stout 8vo. Full Leather in Slipcase. Livre D'Artiste. Fine/No Jackets - As Issued. 624 + 46 + np, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. This twenty-sixth publication of Andrew Hoyem's esteemed Arion Press is a beautifully constructed and executed hand-letterpress reprinting of Lawrence Sterne's classic of English literature, "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman" that has been newly-illustrated by the noted Conceptual artist John Baldessari. Remaining faithful to the delightful typographic eccentricities and variant spellings of Sterne's own self-published editions from the 1760s, the main text of the novel has been set in Caslon Old Style - the typeface utilized by Sterne for the original printings - and bound in a single, substantial three-quarter green goatskin over lovely hand-marbled boards volume. This is accompanied by literary scholar Melvyn New's informative forty-six page essay "Lawrence Sterne and Tristram Shandy" separately bound in boards. The crowning achievement of this ambitious undertaking however is the third volume which contains John Baldessari's wry visual commentary of photo-collaged and altered found photographs and film stills in the form of a lengthy accordion-fold leporello that is anchored between green gilt-stamped boards. The three volumes are housed in a gilt-stamped green paper over board slipcase along with the additional Arion Press pre-publication prospectus laid in. A brand new, most handsome example of standard edition of this exquisite, uncommon item limited to four hundred unnumbered copies BOLDLY SIGNED "John Baldessari" in pencil on the colophon of illustrated volume, as issued.         Les mystères templiers

      - Paris, Robert Laffont, 1988.

        Bonjour Monsieur Le Corbusier

Hans Grieshader 1988, Zurich - 111 111 pp., illustrated throughout. FRENCH TEXT. The deluxe limited edition. One of 150 copies in a printed white slipcase, with a signed photograph of Le Corbusier by Doisneau in it's own card folder. Robert Doisneau was employed as an in-house photographer by Renault, a job he willingly quit to work free-lance. He was the photographer of the RÃ sistance, documenting both the occupation and the liberation of Paris. His commissioned works for the Racho Agency put his name on the map, but it was his images of Paris streets and street life that made him world-famous. Doisneau repeatedly portrayed prominent personalities of his time (an example is the mesmerizing portrait of Pablo Picasso with fingers made of cake dough), but only the best-informed experts and most loyal followers were aware of the series of portraits of Le Corbusier made in the early 1950s. In 1988 a small extract of this series was published in a then-groundbreaking edition, that presented Doisneau's images in a luxurious yet still discreet form. Most of the time the architect, painter and sculptor Le Corbusier was painfully aware of the camera watching over him and when concentrated he playfully manipulated the camera by chosing different poses or expressions. Sometimes though, Doisneau was able to catch the modern master at unexpected moments. Reminiscent of his snapshots of Paris life, these images show us the human being that was behind one of the great thinkers and innovators of the 20th century. Fine copy in slipcase.
