PINKNEY, JERRY. PINKNEY,JERRY (HARRIS,JOEL CHANDLER)illus. ORIGINAL ART: MORE TALES OF UNCLE REMUS - RABBIT MAKES A MONKEY OF LION - by Joel Chandler Harris. We are pleased to offer this art by Pinkney used in his edition of More Tales of Uncle Remus published in 1988 by Dial. This is a great watercolor that appears as a double page spread on p. 6-7. The image is 17" wide x 10 1/2" high on art paper 18 1/2 x 11 1/2" and is signed. Rabbit is seen emerging from his house in the tree trunk and he is talking to a bird on a branch. Jerry Pinkney has been illustrating children's books since 1964 and has the rare distinction of being the recipient of three Caldecott Honor Medals -- in 1995 for John Henry by Julius Lester (Dial), in 1990 for The Talking Eggs by Robert D. San Souci (Dial) and in 1989 for Mirandy and Brother Wind by Patricia C. McKissack (Knopf). He has won the Coretta Scott King Award three times and a Coretta Scott King Honor twice. Mr. Pinkney has received four awards for his body of work: the Drexel Citation for Children's Literature, the David McCord Award , the Philadelphia School of Art and Design Alumni Award, and the Keene State College Children's Literature Festival Award. In addition to his work on children's books, he is an extremely successful artist who has had eleven one-man retrospectives at venues ranging from the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists to the Art Institute of Chicago. His current one-man show entitled, "Building Bridges, the Art of Jerry Pinkney" was organized by the Pittsburgh Children's Museum and will be traveling through 1998. Mr. Pinkney has illustrated for a wide variety of clients, including National Geographic , the National Parks Service, the U.S. Postal Service, the American Library Association and the Association of Booksellers for Children.... Many of Mr. Pinkney's children's books celebrate multicultural and African American themes. 'Working on both the Uncle Remus tales and John Henry has shown me an important link between pivotal and opposite African American folk heroes. Brer Rabbit, the sly trickster, originated during slavery and was the first African American folk hero. Slaves who wanted to get the better of their masters needed to be cunning and sly -- hence the trickster role.' " (from Pengui

(WEBER, BRUCE) (BAKER, CHET). Weber, Bruce. LET'S GET LOST - STARRING CHET BAKER: A FILM JOURNAL BY BRUCE WEBER. New York: Little Bear Films, 1988. First Edition. Small Folio. Stapled Pictorial Wrappers. Film Monograph. Near Fine. np (148pp), profusely illustrated in b&w and color. Designed by Sam Shahid, Donald Sterzin and Rise Daniels. Produced in conjunction with Bruce Weber's first feature-length documentary film, this beautifully designed and printed large-format edition was issued in a small, self-published print run to promote "Let's Get Lost" - the renowned fashion photographer's love-letter to the iconic late jazz musician Chet Baker. In addition to Baker, "Let's Get Lost"'s participants include Chris Isaak, Flea, Lisa Marie, Andy Minsker, Cherry Vanilla, Jack Sheldon, Ruth Young, and Bill Claxton. The book's images alternate between scores of the filmmaker's own stills, rare archival photographs, and numerous shots by such renowned lensmen as William Claxton, Frank Stewart, Carol Friedman, and Carol Rieff - many published in book form here for the first time. A most handsome example of this lovely, uncommon item that was originally available for sale only briefly at the time of the film's release at Arcana: Books on the Arts and two agnès b. boutiques - as she provided Baker's wardrobe for the film - showing a small nick to the rear cover and final page along the top edge as well as some minor pulling and short closed tears at one of the binding staples, as is typical with this title. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. 0-9621658-0-8 Inventory Number: 025269

Gordon Murray was a British television producer and puppeteer. He wrote and produced some of the most popular children's television programs aired in the United Kingdom. After retiring from television in 1982, Gordon produced and distributed more than sixty limited-edition miniature books under the Silver Thimble Books imprint. Bound entirely by hand, they contained watercolor paintings, special covers and bindings, and slip cases. After 1987, Murray began to tire of the run sizes and the amount of work involved in printing letter press, and began to emphasize hand-made editions, including original handwritten texts accompanied by original watercolor illustrations. Gordon Murray's miniature books are some of the best artist's miniature books of the twentieth century.

        Freeze; Modern Medicine; Gambler.

London: [no publisher],, 1988 & 1990. 3 works, quarto. Original bronze, blue, and black wrappers, titles to front cover in blue, orange, and white respectively. Illustrated throughout. Extremely minor creasing to wrappers, wrappers of Modern Medicine a touch sunned to the edges. An excellent set. First editions, first impressions; Gambler from a limited edition of 500. The books were released to accompany three exhibitions of the same titles. Freeze was held by Hirst in collaboration with other students from Goldsmith College, and became the inaugural showing of the YBA (Young British Artists). Sixteen students exhibited in the show in an empty London Port Authority building at Surrey Docks, July 1988. These included Hirst, Steven Adamson, Angela Bulloch, Mat Collishaw, Ian Davenport, Angus Fairhurst, Anya Gallaccio, Gary Hume, Michael Landy, Abigail Lane, Sarah Lucas, Lala Meredith-Vula, Richard Patterson, Simon Patterson, Stephen Park and Fiona Rae. Dominic Denis was listed in the catalogue but did not show work. The other two exhibitions were conceived and co-curated with Billee Sellmann and Carl Freedman, both held at Building One, a disused biscuit factory in Bermondsey, in 1990. The artists featured were Hirst himself, Mat Collishaw, Grainne Cullen, Dominic Denis, Angus Fairhurst, Abigail Lane, Miriam Lloyd, and Craig Wood. Again with Sellmann and Freedman, Hirst followed the success of Modern Medicine with Gambler, which featured Hirst, Dan Bonsall, Dominic Denis, Steve di Benedetto, Angus Fairhurst, Tim Head, and Michael Scott.
