Introduction by Riva Castleman, who notes, "De Kooing's work as a print maker has only been occasional." The series of lithographs were originally created in 1967 as charcoal drawings on sheets of plastic, to illustrate O'Hara's "Ode to Willem de Kooning" (In Memory of My Feelings, MOMA, 1967). However, only three of De Kooning's drawings were used in the MOMA publication. Here the complete original suite of 17 drawings is first published in its entirety, transferred directly from the Mylar sheets to lithographic plates by Benjamin Shiff, and printed under his direction. They are accompanied by a new selection of poems by O'Hara.

THE LIFE AND OPINIONS OF TRISTRAM SHANDY, GENTLEMAN - DELUXE LIMITED ARION PRESS EDITION ILLUSTRATED AND SIGNED BY JOHN BALDESSARI

(BALDESSARI, JOHN). Sterne, Laurence, Melvyn New & John Baldessari. THE LIFE AND OPINIONS OF TRISTRAM SHANDY, GENTLEMAN - DELUXE LIMITED ARION PRESS EDITION ILLUSTRATED AND SIGNED BY JOHN BALDESSARI. Signed by the Artist. San Francisco: Arion Press, 1988. First Edition 1/400. Stout 8vo. Full Leather in Slipcase. Livre D'Artiste. Fine/No Jackets - As Issued. 624 + 46 + np, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. This twenty-sixth publication of Andrew Hoyem's esteemed Arion Press is a beautifully constructed and executed hand-letterpress reprinting of Lawrence Sterne's classic of English literature, "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman" that has been newly-illustrated by the noted Conceptual artist John Baldessari. Remaining faithful to the delightful typographic eccentricities and variant spellings of Sterne's own self-published editions from the 1760s, the main text of the novel has been set in Caslon Old Style - the typeface utilized by Sterne for the original printings - and bound in a single, substantial three-quarter green goatskin over lovely hand-marbled boards volume. This is accompanied by literary scholar Melvyn New's informative forty-six page essay "Lawrence Sterne and Tristram Shandy" separately bound in boards. The crowning achievement of this ambitious undertaking however is the third volume which contains John Baldessari's wry visual commentary of photo-collaged and altered found photographs and film stills in the form of a lengthy accordion-fold leporello that is anchored between green gilt-stamped boards. The three volumes are housed in a gilt-stamped green paper over board slipcase along with the additional Arion Press pre-publication prospectus laid in. A brand new, most handsome example of standard edition of this exquisite, uncommon item limited to four hundred unnumbered copies BOLDLY SIGNED "John Baldessari" in pencil on the colophon of illustrated volume, as issued. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         The Satanic Verses

London: Viking Press, 1988. First British edition. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by Salman Rushdie on the title page. Light rubbing, near fine in a near fine dust jacket. A nice example. One of the most controversial and acclaimed novels ever written, The Satanic Verses is Salman Rushdie's best-known and most galvanizing book. Set in a modern world filled with both mayhem and miracles, the story begins with a bang: the terrorist bombing of a London-bound jet in midflight. Two Indian actors of opposing sensibilities fall to earth, transformed into living symbols of what is angelic and evil. This is just the initial act in a magnificent odyssey that seamlessly merges the actual with the imagined. A book whose importance is eclipsed only by its quality, The Satanic Verses is a key work of our times. "A staggering achievement, brilliantly enjoyable" (Nadine Gordimer).

        The Vampire Lestat Film Proposal

1988. Rice's own "bible-script" for a film "based on material in the novels Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat and The Queen of the Damned," and is apparently named for the protagonist of all three novels rather than the title of the series' second book. This precedes the release of the film Interview with the Vampire (for which Rice wrote the screenplay) by six years. Development of a new version of The Vampire Lestat followed the success of that first film, but went nowhere and the film rights reverted to the author. A film of The Queen of the Damned followed in 2002, for which Rice did not write the screenplay and which contained many elements of The Vampire Lestat: neither Rice nor the critics approved of the sequel. This "bible-script" of Rice's seems destined to remain the series' missing link. Included here, in addition to Rice's 185 page script, are her list of "main characters, with notes on appearance" (2 pages); her 12-page treatment of a Queen of the Damned film; and one page on the "virtually endless" possibilities for more films (probably correct, as the 11th book in the series was published in 2014). Three hole-punched; mechanically reproduced sheets bound with two brads; title and date written on spine. Printed on rectos only with the header changing from "Rice/Vampires" to "Vampire/Rice" to "Vampire Chronicles." Small tears to the last page at the upper brad; near fine. A rare original work by Rice related to her most famous series of books, which rekindled the use of vampires in literature and the arts as stand-ins for human desire -- a trend that has persisted to the point that it is now a pervasive part of contemporary popular culture. We have been unable to find any record of another copy of this work appearing in the market, nor any evidence of it in institutional collections. First Edition.

SIX (SIXTH SENSE): ISSUES NUMBER 1-8 - A COMPLETE SET

(COMME DES GARCONS) (KAWAKUBO, REI) (SIX). Kozasu, Atsuko, Editor. SIX (SIXTH SENSE): ISSUES NUMBER 1-8 - A COMPLETE SET. Tokyo. 1988-1991.: Comme Des Garcons Co. Ltd., First Editions. Folio. Stapled Tabloid Wrappers. Fashion Periodical. Good or Better. Each circa 72pp, profusely illustrated in b&w and color. Art Direction by Tsuguya Inoue. Text in English and Japanese. In protective clear acetate dustwrappers. "Six (Sixth Sense)" was innovative Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo's groundbreaking in-house magazine produced to promote her line Comme des Garcons. Published semi-annually between 1988 and 1991 to coincide with CDG's Spring and Fall collections, it ran for a mere eight issues, and was distributed hors commerce only to a select number of clients, fashion insiders and the label's boutiques - it was never made commercially available for sale. "Six" was notable for its striking design and production values that mixed Comme Des Garcons' seasonal looks with pictorials on the work of significant yet often overlooked photographers, artists and designers. Such features over the run included an issue devoted nearly entirely to Robert Frank as well as Andre Kertesz, Gisele Freund, Sachiko Kuru, Serge Lido, Tony Mendoza, Jean Cocteau, Eileen Grey, Yohji Yamamoto, Karl Blossfeldt, Andreas Feininger, Martin Munkacsi, Andre Vigneau, Ken Heyman, Gilbert & George, Gilbert Woon, Cecil Beaton, Elliot Erwitt, Ralph Steiner, Azzedine Alaia, The Boyle Family, David Fischli and Peter Weiss, Mike and Doug Starn, Issey Miyake, Lucie Rie, Line Vautrin, Salvador Dali, Niko Pirosmani, Dino Buzzati, Madame Yevonde, Edward Weston, Jeanette Montgomery Barron, and Alessandro Mendini. Photographers that contributed fashion editorial are Peter Lindbergh, Timothy Greenfield Sanders, Arthur Elgort, Pierre Boucher, Max Vadukul, F.C. Gundlach, Steven Meisel, Brian Griffin, Juergen Teller, Javier Vallhonrat, David Seidner, Christian Moser, Kishin Shinoyama and Dennis Hopper. Those pictured wearing CDG include Robert Ryman, Ellsworth Kelly, Philip Taaffe, Edward Albee, John Malkovich, Linda Evangelista, Francesco Clemente, Naomi Campbell, Julian Sands, John Lurie, Enzo Cucchi, John Cale, Kristin McMenamy, Harry Dean Stanton, Dennis Hopper, Deborah Harry, Sandra Bernhard, and Anna Pawlowski. A presentable, complete set of all eight issues of this uncommon and significant publication showing overall wear, handling, and soiling. There is some tearing and/or minor paper loss to the covers of issues One, Four, and Five. Issues Three, Five, and Six show some minor rippling to several pages due to contact with moisture, but with no sticking or tearing. Still in all, this is a nice set of this awesome publication that looks better in hand than it describes that has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         In Flagrante. With an essay by John Berger & Sylvia Grant.

London: Secker & Warburg, 1988 - Quarto. Original black cloth, titles to spine in silver and to front in blind, black endpapers. With the dust jacket. An excellent, fresh copy in the slightly toned jacket with extremities rubbed and some faint spots to panels. With Killip's photographs throughout. First edition, first impression, of the uncommon hardback issue. In Flagrante, Killip's "subjective book about my time in England" during its "de-industrialisation" (Killip's preface) is one of the greatest photobooks of the late 20th century, "a dark, pessimistic journey, perhaps even a secret odyssey, where rigorous documentary is suffused with a contemplative inwardness, a rare quality in modern photography" (Gerry Badger). Killip has chosen for the book's epigraph Yeats's poem, "He wishes for the cloths of Heaven", with the famous closing lines, "tread softly because you tread on my dreams", a choice which Berger & Grant, in their essay, describe as "searingly apt . for it is as if all the photos here have been branded, like a hundred cattle, with the tenderness of those eight lines."         The Birds of New Guinea and the Adjacent Papuan Islands, including many new species recently discovered in Australia . Vol. I (Birds of Paradise, Crows)

Hill House, Melbourne 1988 - , 56 plates. Fo. HB. Copy no. 293. A small bump to foot of spine, otherwise a fine copy. This book is from the library of Pamela Gilbert, former Entomology Librarian at NHM (London), and it is inscribed to her by the publishers, Bernard & Lucilla d'Abrera, 'To Pam Gilbert - who carried this book on its first odyssey .' It was Pam Gilbert who took the NHM original out to the printers in Singpore for preparation of plates for printing this facsimile edition. Originally published 1875-88. pp. vi, 56 fine colour plates with accompanying text pages.'The volumes in this series are not mere reproductions. They are exact facsimiles of originals held in the Libraries of the British Museum (Natural History) in London and Tring. They are not reproductions, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the B.M.(N.H.) originals. Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. boards covered in special Japanese Saifu cloth, gold stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies, later production runs have not exceeded 300'. [9780947352011]

A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME: FROM THE BIG BANG TO BLACK HOLES

Bantam Books, 1988. First Printing; First Issue of the American Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good dust jacket. Octavo. Ron Miller. All points present included the additional paragraphs. Silver jacket with price in tact on the front flap; a trifle rubbed; it is now protected in a mylar cover; boards are very slightly bowed; contents clean. Remarkably uncommon as it was recalled because, according to Hawking, it was "full of errors, with misplaced and erroneously labeled photographs and diagrams." Undoubtedly, Hawking was among the most influential theoretical physicist who was able to bring the scholarly discussion to a popular audience.

        In Flagrante

London: Secker & Warburg,, 1988. With an essay by John Berger & Sylvia Grant. Quarto. Original black cloth, titles to spine in silver and to front in blind, black endpapers. With the dust jacket. With Killip's photographs throughout. An excellent, fresh copy in the slightly toned jacket with extremities rubbed and some faint spots to panels. Killip has chosen for the book's epigraph Yeats's poem, "He wishes for the cloths of Heaven", with the famous closing lines, "tread softly because you tread on my dreams", a choice which Berger & Grant, in their essay, describe as "searingly apt ... for it is as if all the photos here have been branded, like a hundred cattle, with the tenderness of those eight lines.

The Incal (French: L'Incal) is a French science fiction comic book series written by Alejandro Jodorowsky and illustrated by Moebius and others. The Incal, originally released as Une aventure de John Difool ("A John Difool Adventure"), introduced Jodorowsky's "Jodoverse", a fictional universe in which his science fiction comics take place. (Wikipedia) Alejandro Jodorowsky Prullansky (Spanish: [ale'xand?o xoðo'?ofski]; born 17 February 1929) is a Chilean film and theatre director, screenwriter, playwright, actor, author, poet, producer, composer, musician, comics writer and spiritual guru. Best known for his avant-garde films, he has been "venerated by cult cinema enthusiasts" for his work which "is filled with violently surreal images and a hybrid blend of mysticism and religious provocation". Born to Jewish-Ukrainian parents in Chile, Jodorowsky experienced an unhappy and alienated childhood, and so immersed himself in reading and writing poetry. Dropping out of college, he became involved in theater and in particular mime, working as a clown before founding his own theater troupe, the Teatro Mimico, in 1947. Moving to Paris in the early 1950s, Jodorowsky studied mime under Étienne Decroux before turning to cinema, directing the short film Les têtes interverties in 1957. From 1960 he divided his time between Paris and Mexico City, in the former becoming a founding member of the anarchistic avant-garde Panic Movement of performance artists. In 1966 he created his first comic strip, Anibal 5, while in 1967 he directed his first feature film, the surrealist Fando y Lis, which caused a huge scandal in Mexico, eventually being banned. His next film, the acid western El Topo (1970), became a hit on the midnight movie circuit in the United States, considered as the first-ever midnight cult film, garnering high praise from John Lennon, which led to Jodorowsky being provided with $1 million to finance his next film. The result was The Holy Mountain (1973), a surrealist exploration of western esotericism. Disagreements with the film's distributor Allen Klein, however, led to both The Holy Mountain and El Topo failing to gain widespread distribution, although both became classics on the underground film circuit. After an aborted attempt at filming Frank Herbert's 1965 science fiction novel Dune, Jodorowsky produced three more films, the family film Tusk (1980), the surrealist horror Santa Sangre (1989), and the failed blockbuster The Rainbow Thief (1990). Meanwhile, he has simultaneously written a series of science fiction comic books, most notably The Incal (1980–1989), which has been described as having a claim to be "the best comic book" ever written, and also The Technopriests and Metabarons. Accompanying this, he has also written books and regularly lectures on his own spiritual system, which he calls "psychomagic" and "psychoshamanism" and which borrows from his interests in alchemy, the tarot, Zen Buddhism and shamanism. His son Cristóbal has followed his teachings on psychoshamanism; this work is captured in the feature documentary Quantum Men, directed by Carlos Serrano Azcona. (Wikipedia) Jean Henri Gaston Giraud (8 May 1938 – 10 March 2012) was a French artist, cartoonist and writer who worked in the Franco-Belgian bandes dessinées tradition. Giraud garnered worldwide acclaim predominantly under the pseudonym Mœbius and to a lesser extent Gir, which he used for the Blueberry series and his paintings. Esteemed by Federico Fellini, Stan Lee and Hayao Miyazaki among others, he has been described as the most influential bandes dess [Attributes: Soft Cover]
