USE OF UTRECHT. TEXT FROM THE OPENING OF VESPERS

Northern Netherlands [Utrecht], ca. 1430s. n. This is a beautifully scripted and illuminated leaf, in fine, bright condition with the text in the Dutch translation of Gerardus Magnus or (in Dutch) Geert Groote (or other variants, including Gerard, Gerrit, or Gerhard Groet, 1340-84). At a time when Books of Hours were almost exclusively in Latin (with occasional calendars, rubrics, or personal prayers in the vernacular), Groote sought to make the communication between the individual and the divine more direct by translating the Office of the Virgin into Dutch in or about 1385. A priest whose life was characterized by luxury and irresponsibility until he experienced a profound spiritual awakening, Groote had established a scriptorium in Deventer in 1371 that would allow impoverished scholars to earn a living copying texts. This organization eventually grew into the Brethren of the Common Life, a teaching order that had a profound influence on European education, establishing the first graded schooling and emphasizing humanistic studies and Latin. Their students included Erasmus, and they had a lasting effect on the development of German humanism. It would appear that our leaf comes from a manuscript sold as lot #53 at Sotheby's on 1 December 1987 (for the equivalent of $10,560).. 154 x 111 mm. (6 1/8 x 4 3/8"). Single column, 19 lines in a pleasing gothic book hand. Rubrics in red, capitals struck with red, five one-line initials in red or blue, recto with one two-line initial in burnished gold embellished with red penwork and with delicate penwork extensions running the length of the page; verso WITH A FIVE-LINE BURNISHED GOLD INITIAL on a blue and pink ground with white tracery, a blue, pink, and burnished gold bar border extending from the initial, forming A THREE-QUARTER BORDER with hairline stem extensions bearing gilt bezants and blue and pink acorns, right-hand border featuring three small flowers with burnished gold centers. Trimmed a bit close at head (no loss), otherwise A FINE LEAF--quite clean, smooth, and bright, with sparkling gold. This is a beautifully scripted and illuminated leaf, in fine, bright condition with the text in the Dutch translation of Gerardus Magnus or (in Dutch) Geert Groote (or other variants, including Gerard, Gerrit, or Gerhard Groet, 1340-84).         Ideal Book or The Book Beautiful (Cadenza Reprints on Typography No. 4) [CUSTOM BINDING - David Sellars]

Cadenza Press, London 1987 - Custom binding by David Sellars, Designer Bookbinder (1949-2015), based out of Great Britain. David was awarded a Fellowship of Designer Bookbinders in the mid seventies and served as President of the society for four years; his bindings are represented in most major libraries in the world and many private collections. This binding is almost in counterpoint to the book itself; for Cobden-Sanderson's essay on "The Book Beautiful" David designed a binding reminiscent of roughly-hewn boards, with small jewel-toned dots in the middle of both boards and on the book's edges, contained within a case of even rougher hew. ***DESCRIPTION: Leather spine with the author's initials lettered in gold in blindstamped circles; textured handmade paper over wooden boards, leather collage stripe on both covers; board and paper edges stained black with impressed colored circles; painted endpapers; custom tray and slipcase with matching textured handmade paper, title and colophon pages in red and black; 16 mo size (approximately 6.25" tall), unpaginated with 10 leaves, paper Chilham hand-made from the Hayle Mill, Bembo type; limited edition of "about 100 copies", unnumbered; designer binding by David Sellars, signed and dated 1988, in pencil on a rear flyleaf. ***CONDITION: Fine; the binding perfect, without blemish; the interior pages clean, bright, free of prior owner markings - as new. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the Abe standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Andy Book

1987 - WEBER, Bruce. The Andy Book. (Tokyo: Shotaro Okada, 1987). Quarto, original perfect-bound stiff photographic wrappers. Booklet with Japanese translation laid in. $2800.First edition of Weber's photo-essay on boxer-model Andy Minsker, inscribed twice by Minsker to part-time manager Michael Morton, once on the front cover, "For Mike "˜Motormouth' Morton, who will lead me to the World Jr. Lightweight Title! Thanks, Andy M." and again on an inside blank leaf, "To Mike,". I want to reassure you that you're not wasting your time or $. You, Ed [Milberger, Andy's trainer] and I will be a trio that Portland Oregon will never forget".Thanks again, Andy Minsker, "˜Future' Junior Lightweight World "˜Champeen.""In 1985, Andy Minsker was at the top of his game. Golden Gloves champion. Amateur Boxing Federation champion. He had flattened both the British Commonwealth and Yugoslav champs with first-round knockouts. The featherweight from Milwaukee had just turned pro. Somewhere along the line, he had also been an underwear model for Calvin Klein and cavorted with supermodels the likes of Christie Brinkley" (Chris Lydgate). Bruce Weber, "arguably the most influential contemporary fashion and celebrity photographer, works in a style combining neoclassic mannerism (Beaton, Horst, Hoyningen-Huene) and naturalistic reportage" (Roth, 254). In keeping with his style, Weber occasionally sought out athletes to model clothing, and had met Minsker during a photo-shoot of Olympic hopefuls at the 1983 Colorado Sports Festival. Because of a misunderstanding, Weber was prevented from photographing the Olympic boxing team at that time. Several years later, Minsker approached Weber, disclosing that he had been told by Olympic officials that "you'd give me a weird haircut and make me wear skimpy see-through clothes". That's all I needed to hear. I'm on my way." This engaging 1987 photobook is the result of the young boxer's pluck. Later the same year, Weber would make a film with Minsker, entitled Broken Noses. The copy here is inscribed twice by Minsker to fast-talking Portland manager Mike "Motormouth" Morton, who was given his nickname by famous promoter Don King. Known as "the busiest professional boxing manager in the Pacific Northwest" (Oregonian), Morton managed Minsker after his falling out with Billy Baxter. When Minsker retired in 1991, he had stepped into the ring 344 times"" against the best in the world"" but never did capture the Junior Lightweight crown. This is author Katherine Dunn's copy, with a manila folder of her articles on Minsker, signed by her.A fine inscribed copy, with boxing and literary provenance.         Mama by Terry McMillan 1Ed 1Pr SIGNED; RARE CONTEMPORARILY SIGNED AND DATED COPY

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1987. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing of Terry McMillan's debut book [of which only 5,000 copies were issued], being the tale of an impoverished black family's struggles to overcome its problems (spine ends lightly pushed, tiny spots to the closed page block's top and bottom edges), in a Very Near Fine dust jacket (slight edge and corner wear, slight pushing to the spine ends, some pushing to the front flap's upper edge) without the substantial fading and wear that often is seen on this title, CONTEMPORARILY SIGNED BY TERRY MCMILLAN on the half-title and there nicely inscribed, signed, and dated by her as follows: "Linda / Well thanks so / much for your generosity - / I appreciate it!! / Enjoy MAMA! / Best / Terry McMillan / 1-27-87". In the New York Times Magazine, Daniel Max (then a contributing editor of The Paris Review and who has written frequently on authors and publishing) noted that: "Before "Waiting to Exhale" made her a millionaire, Terry McMillan was a struggling writer. As a junior editor, I acquired for a small sum the paperback rights to her first book, "Mama." Published in hardcover by Houghton Mifflin in 1987, "Mama" is the story of a strong black woman who very much resembles McMillan's own mother. The standard effort was made to ship books and to seek reviews, which "Mama" did not get in unusual numbers. Even without strong reviews "Mama" sold out its first hardcover printing of 5,000 copies, a mystery until McMillan explained what she had done. Essentially McMillan had marketed her own book. She'd used the word processor at the law firm where she worked as night typist, and sent out thousands of letters to bookstores, college organizations and news media -- with a strong emphasis on black groups -- urging them to stock and promote her book and invite her to read from it. Today as a result of such efforts and her tireless touring, she is one of the best-known writers in the country -- a bigger draw than Alice Walker or Toni Morrison. And all three of McMillan's subsequent books -- including an anthology of new black fiction, "Breaking Ice" -- together have nearly a million copies in print." McMillan's publicity efforts were so successful that "Mama" went into its third printing six weeks after its original publication. While not an Autobiography, the novel was based on a short story by McMillan titled "Ma' Dear" [a tale inspired by events from McMillan's childhood and characters from Port Huron, Michigan where she grew up] that McMillan workshopped with her writing group, The Harlem Writer's Guild who advised her that the short story should be turned into a novel. A considerably nicer copy of Terry McMillan's debut book than often is seen, CONTEMPORARILY SIGNED AND DATED BY TERRY MCMILLAN WITH AN EXCELLENT INSCRIPTION. QUITE SCARCE INDEED WHEN CONTEMPORARILY SIGNED AND DATED, perhaps, if not likely, signed and dated at one of the appearances arranged by McMillan and noted by Daniel Max in the above quote, and certainly well-before McMillan came to fame. [As the Uncorrected Proof for the Novel names January 1987 as the projected time of publication, the copy offered here is quite likely to be one of the earliest copies of the novel to be signed by McMillan.] A RARE CONTEMPORARILY SIGNED COPY -- THE EARLIEST TERRY MCMILLAN SIGNATURE WE EVER HAVE SEEN.

LAMF. Three Days in Berlin [WITH 28 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS]

[Washington D.C.]: [Self-published], 1987 - 8vo (220 × 170 mm), pp.[8], 28 gelatin silver prints tipped on to archival mounts, each numbered with a red or black ink stamp. Blue cloth-covered boards, upper side titled in gilt. Original dust-jacket made from a contemporary Berlin newspaper, title stamped in black ink to upper panel. Title stamped in black ink to title-page, brown paper title and ticket tipped in. Signed and numbered. Fine. First edition, one of 100 copies, each containing a different selection of between 25 and 30 photographs chosen from the complete series of around 100 images. In 1982 Gossage was invited to exhibit and give a workshop at the Werksatt für Fotgrafie in Kreuzberg, Berlin which had been founded in 1976 by Michael Schmidt. In the early 1980s Schmidt invited a number of American photographers such as Lewis Baltz, William Eggleston and Gossage to exhibit and teach workshops. These cultural exchanges greatly informed the work of all who took part. Gossage made many subsequent visits, and it was here in Berlin, where the past was manifestly visible, that he began making photographs that would inform all of his subsequent work. The photographs in LAMF were taken using a telephoto lens and surveillance film and the title of the series relates to Gossage’s memory of a graffiti warning he often saw whilst growing up in New York City in the 1950s and ‘60s. LAMF (Like a Mother Fucker) was an acronym used by street gangs to mark their territory. Though when Gossage saw the same letters on walls in Berlin it seems more likely that they were written in homage to Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers’ 1977 album of the same name.
