Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1987. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing of Terry McMillan's debut book [of which only 5,000 copies were issued], being the tale of an impoverished black family's struggles to overcome its problems (spine ends lightly pushed, tiny spots to the closed page block's top and bottom edges), in a Very Near Fine dust jacket (slight edge and corner wear, slight pushing to the spine ends, some pushing to the front flap's upper edge) without the substantial fading and wear that often is seen on this title, CONTEMPORARILY SIGNED BY TERRY MCMILLAN on the half-title and there nicely inscribed, signed, and dated by her as follows: "Linda / Well thanks so / much for your generosity - / I appreciate it!! / Enjoy MAMA! / Best / Terry McMillan / 1-27-87". In the New York Times Magazine, Daniel Max (then a contributing editor of The Paris Review and who has written frequently on authors and publishing) noted that: "Before "Waiting to Exhale" made her a millionaire, Terry McMillan was a struggling writer. As a junior editor, I acquired for a small sum the paperback rights to her first book, "Mama." Published in hardcover by Houghton Mifflin in 1987, "Mama" is the story of a strong black woman who very much resembles McMillan's own mother. The standard effort was made to ship books and to seek reviews, which "Mama" did not get in unusual numbers. Even without strong reviews "Mama" sold out its first hardcover printing of 5,000 copies, a mystery until McMillan explained what she had done. Essentially McMillan had marketed her own book. She'd used the word processor at the law firm where she worked as night typist, and sent out thousands of letters to bookstores, college organizations and news media -- with a strong emphasis on black groups -- urging them to stock and promote her book and invite her to read from it. Today as a result of such efforts and her tireless touring, she is one of the best-known writers in the country -- a bigger draw than Alice Walker or Toni Morrison. And all three of McMillan's subsequent books -- including an anthology of new black fiction, "Breaking Ice" -- together have nearly a million copies in print." McMillan's publicity efforts were so successful that "Mama" went into its third printing six weeks after its original publication. While not an Autobiography, the novel was based on a short story by McMillan titled "Ma' Dear" [a tale inspired by events from McMillan's childhood and characters from Port Huron, Michigan where she grew up] that McMillan workshopped with her writing group, The Harlem Writer's Guild who advised her that the short story should be turned into a novel. A considerably nicer copy of Terry McMillan's debut book than often is seen, CONTEMPORARILY SIGNED AND DATED BY TERRY MCMILLAN WITH AN EXCELLENT INSCRIPTION. QUITE SCARCE INDEED WHEN CONTEMPORARILY SIGNED AND DATED, perhaps, if not likely, signed and dated at one of the appearances arranged by McMillan and noted by Daniel Max in the above quote, and certainly well-before McMillan came to fame. [As the Uncorrected Proof for the Novel names January 1987 as the projected time of publication, the copy offered here is quite likely to be one of the earliest copies of the novel to be signed by McMillan.] A RARE CONTEMPORARILY SIGNED COPY -- THE EARLIEST TERRY MCMILLAN SIGNATURE WE EVER HAVE SEEN.

LAMF. Three Days in Berlin [WITH 28 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS]

[Washington D.C.]: [Self-published], 1987 - 8vo (220 × 170 mm), pp.[8], 28 gelatin silver prints tipped on to archival mounts, each numbered with a red or black ink stamp. Blue cloth-covered boards, upper side titled in gilt. Original dust-jacket made from a contemporary Berlin newspaper, title stamped in black ink to upper panel. Title stamped in black ink to title-page, brown paper title and ticket tipped in. Signed and numbered. Fine. First edition, one of 100 copies, each containing a different selection of between 25 and 30 photographs chosen from the complete series of around 100 images. In 1982 Gossage was invited to exhibit and give a workshop at the Werksatt für Fotgrafie in Kreuzberg, Berlin which had been founded in 1976 by Michael Schmidt. In the early 1980s Schmidt invited a number of American photographers such as Lewis Baltz, William Eggleston and Gossage to exhibit and teach workshops. These cultural exchanges greatly informed the work of all who took part. Gossage made many subsequent visits, and it was here in Berlin, where the past was manifestly visible, that he began making photographs that would inform all of his subsequent work. The photographs in LAMF were taken using a telephoto lens and surveillance film and the title of the series relates to Gossage’s memory of a graffiti warning he often saw whilst growing up in New York City in the 1950s and ‘60s. LAMF (Like a Mother Fucker) was an acronym used by street gangs to mark their territory. Though when Gossage saw the same letters on walls in Berlin it seems more likely that they were written in homage to Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers’ 1977 album of the same name.       London: Henry Greenwood & Co, 1987. First editions. 4 volumes are tall 8vos., all others are 4tos.; variable pagination's. 116 bound volumes and 14 volumes in approximately 730 issues in original illustrated wrappers. Various cloth bindings, with a few in quarter calf with marbled paper over boards, some volumes with extensive repairs or new bindings. Internally, very good to fine. Assembled from a variety of sources, with several being ex-library. A near and complete set, beginning with The Liverpool Photographic Journal, Volumes 1 & 2 (1854 -1855 and 1857-1858) and continuing as a long and unbroken run from 1862 through 1969, with the years 1974 through 1987 in the original illustrated wrappers, missing but a few issues from the last volumes of the 1980s. "First published in Liverpool, The British Journal of Photography began as the Liverpool Photographic Journal on 14 January 1854 and continued through December 1856 (vols. 1-3). It continued as the Liverpool & Manchester Photographic Journal from January 1857 to December 1858 (vols. 4-5). Following, this it continued as the Photographic Journal from January to December 1859 (vol. 6) and then as The British Journal of Photography from January 1860 (vol. 7) to the present. Initially a monthly journal belonging to the Liverpool Photographic Society, it was sold during 1856 to Henry Greenwood, the printer and publisher since inception. The firm moved from Liverpool to London in 1864 remaining as the journal's publishers. From 1 January 1857, the Journal became a fortnightly and from 1 January 1865, a weekly publication. At the same time, the earlier size of large 8vo. also changed to 4to. The Liverpool Photographic Society, and later the Liverpool Amateur Photographic Society, included amongst its membership: Francis Frith, then a printer; George Berry, a professional photographer; Henry Greenwood, a printer; as well as B.J. Sayce, W.B. Bolton, Peter Mawdsley and later, Vero C. Driffield. It was a suggestion made by George Berry that led to the publication of the Journal. The first editors were members of the Liverpool Photographic Society; Charles Corey, Frank Howard and George Berry. For a short period it was edited by William Crookes.... in 1858 it came under the editorship of George Shadbolt, and from January 1865, William Crookes and George Dawson edited it for a few months until J. Thrail Taylor took over the same year. Taylor remained editor until 1879, when he left for New York to take over the Photographic Times. W.B. Bolton held the reins until 1886, when Taylor returned to his previous post, remaining as editor until shortly before his death in 1895. The scope of contributions and contributors were both national and international and was admired wherever English was spoken. During the able editorship of Taylor and Bolton the Journal grew in importance and pages. A volume in the 1880s and 1890s typically contained over 800 quarto pages and these pages were frequently used to announce the progress of photography. The important developments in the gelatine (sic) dry plate as well as other processes were first published in its pages. Since 1860, The British Journal of Photography has retained the enviable position of being one of the most influential photographic journals in the world." Michael Hallett in Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography. A rare, near complete run of this outstanding journal.

Northern Netherlands [Utrecht], ca. 1430s. n. This is a beautifully written out and illuminated leaf, in fine, bright condition with the text in the Dutch translation of Gerardus Magnus or (in Dutch) Geert Groote (or other variants, including Gerard, Gerrit, or Gerhard Groet, 1340-84). At a time when Books of Hours were almost exclusively in Latin (with occasional calendars, rubrics, or personal prayers in the vernacular), Groote sought to make the communication between the individual and the divine more direct by translating the Office of the Virgin into Dutch in or about 1385. Utrecht was the center of illluminated manuscript production in the Low Countries in the late Middle Ages, and one of the leading workshops was that of the artist known as the Master of Otto van Moerdrecht, who took his name from one of his patrons, a canon of the cathedral chapter. Our leaf comes from a manuscript that sold at Sotheby's in 1987 (for £10,450).. 154 x 111 mm. (6 1/8 x 4 3/8"). Single column, 19 lines in a pleasing gothic book hand. Rubrics in red, capitals struck with red, seven one-line initials in red or blue, recto with two two-line initials in burnished gold with penwork embellishment in purple or red, A VERY APPEALING EIGHT-LINE ''H" in blue with white tracery, ON A GROUND OF BURNISHED GOLD, the center of the initial with a curling white vine bearing flowers of pink and blue, the leaf ALSO WITH AN ANIMATED FULL BORDER featuring leaves and flowers in various colors and gold, THE LOWER AND OUTER portions of the BORDER EACH WITH A GOLD-WINGED, HALF-LENGTH ANGEL BY THE MOERDRECHT MASTER. Trimmed close at head and fore edge (minimal loss), a touch of flaking to gold on the initial, otherwise A FINE LEAF, clean, smooth, bright, and generally well preserved.
