No. 351 of 750 (820 total), elephant folio size, unpaginated, signed by Octavio Paz and Robert Motherwell, fine book in a near fine box. Octavio Paz (1914-1998), Mexican poet and diplomat, won many awards including the Miguel de Cervantez Prize, the Neustadt International Prize, and the Nobel Prize in Literature. Critic Ramón Xirau wrote "The poetry of Octavio Paz does not hesitate between language and silence; it leads into the realm of silence where true language lives." Paz's literary career helped define modern poetry and the Mexican personality (N. B. info from The Poetry Foundation).___ABOUT THE ARTIST: Possessing perhaps the best and most extensive formal education of all the New York School painters, Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) was well versed in literature, philosophy and the European modernist traditions. His paintings, prints and collages feature simple shapes, bold color contrasts and a dynamic balance between restrained and boldly gestural brushstrokes. They reflect not only a dialogue with art history, philosophy and contemporary art, but also a sincere and considered engagement with autobiographical content, contemporary events and the essential human conditions of life, death, oppression and revolution (N. B. info from The Art Story).___DESCRIPTION: Bound in natural linen with pictorial pastedown of red and black, twenty-seven original lithographs printed at Trestle Editions on various hand-made Japanese papers with tissue guards, Spanish text in red and English in black; hand-set Bauer Bodoni Bold and Italic type, printed on mould-made paper from Cartiere Enrico Magnani; first poem was printed at Wild Carrot Letterpress, second poem has been printed at Stamperia Valdonega, and the last poem at Heritage Printers; elephant folio (approximately 21.75" tall), unpaginated; limited edition, this number 351 of 750 (an additional 70 copies were issued in various formats, unbound), signed by Artist Robert Motherwell and Poet Octavio Paz. The clamshell box is overall fine, with professional repairs done to a small tear (approximately 0.75") on the lower left corner, the lower right corner of the box bumped, a few other extremely small areas of bumping for so large and heavy an item.___POSTAGE: Due to large size and weight, additional postage will apply; we are happy to ship at cost for both domestic and international customers, please inquire for details.___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Photocall for the release of Bette Davis's new book This 'n' That'. Bette Davis. 14/09/1987.

745 x 520mm. Giclée Print using Archival pigment inks on Hahnemüle Fine Art Pearl 285gsm paper. Limited edition of 10 numbered copies signed by the photographer. Alan Davidson is a press photographer based in London for more than 30 years, Alan has photographed the rich, the famous, the before-they-were-famous to those that have fallen from grace. Going through his vast archive, with new treasures found within the old brown manilla envelopes, reads like a who's who of the great and good (and the very bad) of London society. Cinema stars rub shoulders with pop stars, royalty with politicians. Working from the late 1960s to the present day Alan remembers the days before celebrities became surrounded by 30 young publicists and before there were 50 photographers at every event you went to, allowing him to take intimate and relaxed portraits, unlike the anodyne syndicated press shots of today.

        Handwritten Manuscript War Baby

1987. fine. Original handwritten manuscript of the complete lyrics for War Baby. 3 pages, rectos only (the 3rd page with only 2 lines) of 8" X 10" ruled paper, 37 lines (233 words), neatly written in pencil, all in Jagger's own handwriting. Titled at the top, verse and bridge notations to the left. An authentic recording session draft, 1987, for his 2nd solo album Primitive Cool (his 1993 biography was also titled Primitive Cool). The band featured polished supporting performances by Dave Stewart, Vernon Reed, G. E. Smith, and Jeff Beck. Left edge trimmed 1/8" (no loss), 4 staple holes, else fine. I've bought and sold these rock & roll manuscripts for 35 years, and Jagger lyrics are mystifyingly rare (I guess he intentionally keeps them and chases after them). Those that are complete, published, recorded, staged, and for sale, are scarcer than the manuscripts of his analogous contemporaries, and War Baby is nothing less than his shot at an antiwar message, not up to the heights of Give Peace a Chance, or Blowin' in the Wind, but I've bought and sold a dozen manuscripts by various Beatles, and twice that many by Dylan, and this was the first (of only 3) Jagger manuscript I've seen for sale, with its ring of authenticity sure enough, for me to buy it (the other 2, at Sotheby's, 24 June, 2014, seemingly withdrawn on dispute over clear title (?), reaffirming that these are hard to buy and always will be.

Aid & Comfort: The Artists Portfolio

San Francisco 1987 - One of 500 copies. Scarce. This is the first and only edition of this artists portfolio that was conceived as an additional fundraising effort to supplement a benefit dinner performance held June 8, 1987 to raise money for people fighting AIDS. The initial effort was spearheaded by a group of San Francisco restauranteurs. The portfolio drew upon the talents of artists, writers, and printers. Fine artists selected current works to be reproduced. Restaurants contributed recipes, and food writers also contributed recipes and essays. The result was the production of twenty-three stunning broadsides. They delight with their diversity and fine printing. Among the well-known restaurants of the time participating were Campton Place, Chez Panisse, China Moon Cafe, Fog City Diner, Greens at Fort Mason, Square One, Stars, and the Zuni Cafe. Food writers included Diana Kennedy, James Beard, M.F. K. Fisher, Richard Olney, and Calvin Trillin. Printers included Arion Press, Matrix Press, Moving Parts Press, Stinehour, Peter Koch, and the Artichoke Press. All of the work was donated. This portfolio includes four pages of preliminaries, the 23 broadsides, and 10 color reproductions on glossy paper of art work by contemporary artists. Housed in a stiff red paper portfolio with printed spine label. All in fine condition. 9 x 13.25 inches. PRI/111517.

One of the few sci-fi novels by King, which imagines the discovery of an alien spacecraft near a small Maine town. First edition (first printing). Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Small nick to front lower covers. Inscribed by the author to the evolutionary paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould: 'For Steve and Deborah and the boys--Hope you like this, Steve--you'll see you're acknowledged--for The Flamingo's Smile--on the acknowledgement page. Wonderful book, and one that had a real impact on the rewrite. We hope to see you soon-- All the best, Steve King. 12/11/87.' The acknowledgements read, 'I'm also grateful to Stephen Jay Gould. Although he is a Yankees fan and thus not entirely to be trusted, his comment on the possibilities of what I'd call 'dumb evolution' helped shape the redraft of this novel (e.g. The Flamingo's Smile).' In Gould's book, Wonderful Life, he refers to The Tommyknockers as 'fractur[ing] a tradition in science fiction by treating extraterrestrial 'higher intelligences' not as superior in general...but merely as quirky hangers-on...' An extraordinary association copy.
