Ihan Teiko.Edo (Tokyo), 1805. 2 volumes: 3 parts in 1 text volume., and 1 atlas volume. Text volume (8vo), atlas vol. large 8vo (30 x 21 cm). With numerous anatomical illustrations on 16 engraved plates, mounted on thick paper, by the Japanese artist Aodo Denzen. Both volumes in contemporary Japanese book-bindings; rice-paper (text) and boards (atlas).

Goodman, Dutch impact on Japan (1987), p. 133; Ranzaburo Otori, "The acceptance of Western Medicine in Japan", in: Monumenta Nipponica XIX, 3/4 (1964), pp. 254-74. Extremely rare original edition of a highly influential Japanese medical text book, the Ihan Teiko , ( General outline of medical precepts ). The work contains the 3 parts summary of the Ensei Ihan ( Medical precepts of the West ), compiled by the celebrated Japanese physician and successful Rangaku-sha (Scholar of Dutch learning) Udagawa Genshin (1769-1834, or 1824/5?), first published in 30 volumes in the same year and containing translations and excerpts of imported Dutch books on anatomy and physiology.Owing to the vast volume of this book, his pupil Fujii Hohtei summarized it to the present 3 volumes. With these procedures, the book became widely known and read among physicians who had an interest in Dutch style medicine, especially the function of the organs, and tissue. Although this book shows some classical immaturities, it had great influence on Japanese physicians in promoting the level of knowledge from pre-modern to modern medicine, even in the time of the closed-door policy. The work has been of great service in diffusing Western medical knowledge The atlas-volume contains a foreword in which the engraver Aodo Denzen is praised. It is the first engraved anatomical atlas published in Japan. The engravings were printed on rice paper, and mounted on thick paper, with explanatory text on the opposite page. In 1808 a second, revised edition of the Ihan Teiko was published.Serious wormholes in the margins of the last half of the atlas volume. Good set of the rare first edition.

Dictionaire historique, ou Memoires critiques et litteraires, concernant la vie et les ouvrages de divers personnages distingués, particulierement dans la republique des lettres. The Hague, Pierre de Hondt, 1758-1759. 2 parts in 1 volume. Folio. With an engraved plate. Contemporary half calf, richly gold-tooled spine with floral ornaments.

Berkvens-Stevelinck, Prosper Marchand: La vie et l'oevre (1987); Bigmore & Wyman 23; Taylor, Book catalogues 153. First edition of a biographical dictionary by the French bookseller, editor and bibliographer Prosper Marchand (1678-1756), an exile living in the Netherlands. It contains short biographies of numerous well-known figures, including Catherine de Medici, Robert Estienne, Cyranides, Lawrence Torrentinus, and many more. Marchand mentions their publications and often includes fragments, short texts and/or poems by them. Since he was an important figure in the literary and intellectual circles of his day, his biographies of contemporaries often include unusual anecdotes about their lives.Marchand was banished from France because of his religion, and started selling books in The Hague. He later became editor of the Journal littéraire, one of the better critical periodicals of the time. The present work was posthumously published by Marchand's friend Jean Nicolas Allamand Samuel. The book was bound for the Dutch minister Jacques Renaud Bouillier (1737-1798) in the 1780's, probably by the so-called Crevenna Bindery in Amsterdam. The coat-of-arms in the first compartment is most probably Bouillier's and at least one of rolls (r-XII) was used in the Crevenna bindery. In 1762 Bouillier was called to London as minister of the Walloon congregation, and he did not return to the Netherlands until 1779, when he once again set up as a clergyman in Amsterdam. His library was auctioned in Amsterdam in 1800.With an armorial bookplate on paste-down. The "advertissement de l'editeur" to part II is bound in part I and pages 259-262 are misbound. Binding only slightly worn along the hinges. Overall in very good condition.

        California Time

(Postenkill, NY: Kaldewey Press, 1987. Kaldewey, Gunnar. Folio. (36)pp. One of forty-five copies in a plexiglass binding by Christian Zwang of Hamburg. Signed by the author/artist/printer, Gunnar Kaldewey. With numerous monochromatic and two-tone illustrations. Written, illustrated, designed, and printed by Gunnar Kaldewey as Volume 5 of the Kaldewey Press series. In 1977, Kaldewey printed New York, his first book about America. Ten years later, California Time was published as a counterpoint to that volume. In it, Kaldewey offers his observations about California's landscapes, both natural and manmade, in prose that ranges from playful to bleak. He sees the landscape with an artist's eye, describing the "simmering city" and the "juicy orange of the West." These verbal images are illustrated in Kaldewey's stylized manner, including one double-page spread showing the Pacific Ocean in aqua and gray on a transparency. A remarkable production by one of America's leading contemporary book artists. Housed in an orange cloth folding box, lettered in silver on the front cover and spine. Together with the original woodblock to the first illustration in the book. Printed in silver, the illustration is of a palm tree, placed across from the text: "It is the sun, the cars and the palm trees. A lot of light. Everything has to do with light." The block was inscribed on the back by Kaldewey in 1988.

Engraved map in two sheets (together 76 x 41 cm) with separate engraved scale of ca. 1:360,000 (9 x 19 cm, pasted on a larger slip impressed with the title). In a modern frame (107.5 x 60 cm).

Schilder, "Een merkwaardige 16e-eeuwse kaart…", in: Caert-thresoor VI (1987), p. 53 ("only known copy", namely the present copy); for the Theodoor Galle version of the "Nieuwe caerte": Schilder, MCN II, pp. 155-157 (2 copies); Schilder, "Een merkwaardige 16e-eeuwse kaart…", in: Caert-thresoor VI (1987), pp. 49-53; for the Galle-Vrients map of the whole Low Countries: Schilder, MCN II, pp. 138-160; Van der Heijden I, 22. Only copy located of a two-sheet map of the Middle Netherlands in its second state, published by Johannes Galle between 1633 and 1653. The three copperplates used to print the map originally formed part of a set of twelve plates used to print a map of the entire Low Countries (Northern and Southern Netherlands). That map, one of the earliest of the complete Low Countries, was engraved and printed by Philips Galle (1537-1612), a Haarlem-born engraver based in Antwerp, but no copy is known to survive with the map plates in their first state. Several copies exist of a 1605 reprint of the map from the original plates by the publisher Joan Baptista Vrients (1552-1612). After Vrients's death, Jan Moretus (1543-1610), head of the Officina Plantinian, bought the copperplates. Philips Galle's son Theodoor (1571-1633) was also Moretus's son-in-law and therefore had ready access to the copperplates. He used three of them to publish the first edition of the present Nieuwe caerte .Sometime after Theodoor's 1633 death, his son Johannes (1600-1676) reprinted the map of the Middle-Netherlands, copying the letterpress title and changing only the imprint. The state of the plates is therefore otherwise identical to those in the map as published by Theodoor: printed from the 1578-plates with the minor alterations to 1612. Johannes Galle also published an edition of the complete map (ca. 1653) with several new ships added in the Zuiderzee. Since these ships are absent in his present edition of the Nieuwe caerte , we date it before those alterations. With a few spots.

1987. 2 vols. I.: 213 pp. critical and descriptive text (in Italian and English) on the Byzantine codex considered to be the oldest surviving copy of the New Testament, notes, lists, bibl., index, 43 plates showing leaves; II.: 376 pp. excellent facsimile reproduction of the mss. with metallic accents highlighting the chrysography and various illuminations. 4to. Text cloth-backed boards with cardboard slipcase., mss. in 1/2 blind-stamped leather and wood. Graz/Rome (Akademische Druck/Salerno) 1987. (Codices Selecti, Facs. LXXXI, Comm. LXXXI/Codices Mirabiles, I). Dating from the 6th century, the codex, now incomplete, contains Canon Tables as well as the Gospel writings of Matthew and Mark. It is one of the most striking examples of the "purple codex" style, where each sheet of parchment was dyed a deep purple before being lined and illuminated with rich pigments and gold or silver leaf.         Nieuwe caerte van de Veluwe, Betuwe, Gelderlandt, ende andere omligghende provincien, als Hollandt, Utrecht, Zutphen, &c.Antwerp, Johannes Galle, [ca. 1633/53]. Engraved map in two sheets (together 76 x 41 cm) with separate engraved scale of ca. 1:360,000 (9 x 19 cm, pasted on a larger slip impressed with the title). In a modern frame (107.5 x 60 cm).

Schilder, "Een merkwaardige 16e-eeuwse kaart...", in: Caert-thresoor VI (1987), p. 53 ("only known copy", namely the present copy); for the Theodoor Galle version of the "Nieuwe caerte": Schilder, MCN II, pp. 155-157 (2 copies); Schilder, "Een merkwaardige 16e-eeuwse kaart...", in: Caert-thresoor VI (1987), pp. He used three of them to publish the first edition of the present Nieuwe caerte.Sometime after Theodoor's 1633 death, his son Johannes (1600-1676) reprinted the map of the Middle-Netherlands, copying the letterpress title and changing only the imprint. The state of the plates is therefore otherwise identical to those in the map as published by Theodoor: printed from the 1578-plates with the minor alterations to 1612. Johannes Galle also published an edition of the complete map (ca. 1653) with several new ships added in the Zuiderzee. Since these ships are absent in his present edition of the Nieuwe caerte, we date it before those alterations. With a few spots.
