        The Andy Book

Tokyo: Doeisha, 1987. First Edition. Softcover.. VG+. 4to, Unpaginated. French fold wraps as issued. Numerous Black & White plates. Text in English, with Japanese translation booklet laid in. A little rubbed and grubby, with small price sticker residue to rear, but still better than is often the case for this fragile title. More images available on request. Scarce. One of the great Weber books. His profile of smalltown hero and featherwight champion Andy Minsker (who also modelled for Calvin Klein and things) somehow sums up everything he does i.e. casual male glamour. The pictures and brilliant, and the book is an excellent complete work.

Byen bag regnen. Fotografier fra København af Krass Clement ('The City Behind the Rain: Photographs from Copenhagen by Krass Clement'). FIRST EDITION .

Copenhagen: Gyldendal, 1987. Oblong8vo. Publisher's original illustrated wrappers. 153 pp. Illustrated throughout. Only minimal light wear to cover and edges. Internally clean and overall a near fine, very attractive copy.. Mainly famous for his book 'Drum' (1996) included in Parr & Badger, but the rest of Krass Clement's oeuvre is equally outstanding: 'The City Behind the Rain', Krass Clement's 4th book is a photo book masterpiece with black-and-white photographs from Copenhagen - one of his most sought after works. Beautifully designed book with charcoal grey and black wrappers matching the melancholic style of Krass Clement's photographs. This photo book was his breakthrough (in Denmark/Scandinavia) and by collectors and the artist himself considered the capital work. It is also one his most accessible books with very classic b/w photography influenced by both the nocturnal Brassaï & Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank, though the Copenhagen seen through Krass Clement's Leica is his very own. First edition. More pictures available upon request

Byen bag regnen. Fotografier fra København. [The City behind the Rain. Photographs from Copenhagen].

[Copenhagen, 1987]. Queer 4to. Original dark grey wrappers. Very slight sunning to spine and a tiny nick to upper part of front wrapper. An 1988-inscription to front free end-paper. A very small oval stamp and two small spots to title-page, otherwise internally near mint. 53, (4, -index) pp., containing 128 full-page b/w photographs.. The uncommon first edition of Krass Clement's fourth book, being one of the most sought-after of his works. The renowned Danish photographer Krass Clement (born in Copehagen 1946) counts as one of the most esteemed Danish photographers, and his "Byen bag Regnen" as one of the most popular Danish photography-books ever printed. Clement's interest in photography developed already in his childhood, and he began photographing as early as the late 50'ies. He was educated as a film-director but soon turned professionally to still photography. His first book, Skygger af øjeblikke (Shadows of the Moment), appeared in 1978, followed by Det tavse land (The Silent Land) from 1981 and Gentagelsens fest (The Party of Repetition) from 1984, before his great work on Copenhagen, "The City Behind the Rain", appeared in 1887, presenting his magnificent melancholic, but also humorous and inspiring photographs from the 1960'ies and 80'ies of different aspects of Copenhagen and Copenhageners. His work, often presented in book-form, his favourite medium, is considered highly inspiring and poetical, in spite of their melancholic character, which makes them oddly compelling. His social-realist portrayal of Copenhagen in the 60'ies and 80'ies is very different from other contemporary works, and his critical but still sympathetic approach, with a sharp eye for the humorous, makes it both lively and of great artistic value. Clement is the first artist photographer to receive a lifelong disbursement from The State Art Foundation, and his works are displayed at both MOMA and the National Library in Paris

        California Time

Kaldewey Press (Postenkill, NY: Kaldewey Press, 1987). Folio. (36)pp. One of forty-five copies in a plexiglass binding by Christian Zwang of Hamburg. Signed by Gunnar Kaldewey. With numerous monochromatic and two-tone illustrations. Written, illustrated, designed, and printed by Kaldewey as Volume 5 of the Kaldewey Press series. In 1977, Kaldewey printed New York, his first book about America. Ten years later, California Time was published as a counterpoint to that volume. In it, Kaldewey offers his observations about California's landscapes, both natural and manmade, in prose that ranges from playful to bleak. He sees the landscape with an artist's eye, describing the "simmering city" and the "juicy orange of the West." These verbal images are illustrated in Kaldewey's stylized manner, including one double-page spread showing the Pacific Ocean in aqua and gray on a transparency. A remarkable production by one of the leading contemporary book artists. Housed in an orange cloth folding box, lettered in silver on the front cover and spine. Together with the original woodblock to the first illustration in the book. Printed in silver, the illustration is of a palm tree, placed across from the text: "It is the sun, the cars and the palm trees. A lot of light. Everything has to do with light." The block was inscribed on the back by Kaldewey in 1988.
