        The Day of Creation.

Victor Gollancz. London 1987 - First edition. DW. SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO ANGHARAD RYDER. TOGETHER WITH TWO TWO-SIDED AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED AND FOUR AUTOGRAPH POSTCARDS FROM BALLARD TO RYDER. The letters are very interesting and also personal, for example he tells Angharad to be selective in her small safari through his novels, ".there's a pretty clear spectrum running from the visionary & idealistic (Crystal World and Unlimited Dream Co) to more or less out and out porn, as in Crash - though to me that's my most idealistic book of all." He talks about the part-autobiographical nature of "Empire" and how his experiences in the camps changed him, ".in the sense of reducing the moral authority of the received world to nil, and placing immense value on the power of the imagination to remake everything - rather psychotic really." And also, "Latin? My first love (a school in England.in the late 40's we even attempted Latin conversation - heroically pointless)". The other letter covers flying lessons, writers on flying and how learning to fly can signal a life about to change. He manages in both the letters and the postcards to be inspiring and present fresh ideas and his passion for life as he does in all his work. The book is fine in wrapper. The dedication states, "For Angharad, 'The aeroplane has unveiled for us the true face of the earth' - St. Ex All the best JG Ballard [two dots and a flourish]" [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

And the Nova Scotia landscapes and still lifes-beautiful, bleak, elegiac-reveal an artist at the height of his powers but hardly at peace with the world or himself."         California Time.

(Postenkill, NY Kaldewey Press 1987) - Folio. (36)pp. One of forty-five copies in a plexiglass binding by Christian Zwang of Hamburg. Signed by the author/artist/printer, Gunnar Kaldewey. With numerous monochromatic and two-tone illustrations. Written, illustrated, designed, and printed by Gunnar Kaldewey as Volume 5 of the Kaldewey Press series. In 1977, Kaldewey printed New York, his first book about America. Ten years later, California Time was published as a counterpoint to that volume. In it, Kaldewey offers his observations about California's landscapes, both natural and manmade, in prose that ranges from playful to bleak. He sees the landscape with an artist's eye, describing the "simmering city" and the "juicy orange of the West." These verbal images are illustrated in Kaldewey's stylized manner, including one double-page spread showing the Pacific Ocean in aqua and gray on a transparency. A remarkable production by one of America's leading contemporary book artists. Housed in an orange cloth folding box, lettered in silver on the front cover and spine. Together with the original woodblock to the first illustration in the book. Printed in silver, the illustration is of a palm tree, placed across from the text: "It is the sun, the cars and the palm trees. A lot of light. Everything has to do with light." The block was inscribed on the back by Kaldewey in 1988. (Von Lucius, p. 67-69). [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Bowu Zhi; An Annotated Translation

Skrifter Utgivna Av Foreningen for Orientaliska Stuoier, 20, Stockholm, Sweden 1987 - SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. "This dissertation has a two-fold purpose. Firstly, it provides an annotated translation of the full text of the Bowu Zhi by Zhang Hua (232-300), an intriguing early mediaeval work that contains passages which throw interesting light on a number of fields in mediaeval Chinese scholarship and the development of traditional Chinese science. As reference to the Bowu Zhi is rendered difficult by the parlous state of the text, a full translation with accompanying textual reconstructions where necessary was unavoidable, to which has been added a brief study of Zhang Hua. The second purpose of this dissertation is to attempt to gain a clearer understanding of the textual authenticity of the various extant editions of the Bowu Zhi, and thus determine whether the Bowu Zhi is a reliable source of mediaeval Chinese scholarship. The Bowu Zhi is widely held to be a refacimento, dating from the Song or even the Ming dynasties, to which later interpolations have been added at an unknown date along with commentaries by two previously unidentified scholars. The author of this dissertation discusses and rejects the refacimento theory, suggesting that one current edition of the Bowu Zhi may be traceable to thge early Tang dynasty, and also attempts to identify the authors of the two commentaries. While a full study of the content of the Bowu Zhi must await reserarch on the hundreds of enigmatic quotations from the Bowu Zhi found throughout Chinese literature but not within the pages of current editions, in his conclusion the author of the dissertation briefly points to four inter-related topics which demonstrate the Bowu Zhi's importance in the comprehension of traditional Chinese science." Very good blue pictorial trade paperback. Faded cover and spine, slight wear, soiling. 1987, 8vo, [4], 328pp. Abstract tipped in, 2 errata pages tipped in. Notes pages 184-277 Bibliography of Chinese and Japanese titles pages 278-328 [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Poems. Translated by Michael Feingold. Illustrated by Neil Welliver.

Vincent FitzGerald & Company, New York 1987 - First Edition in English of Ibsen's poems, one of 75 copies only, with six etchings, including a double page fold-out. Page size: 8-1/2 x 11-1/2". These etchings were executed in the roullette mezzotint medium by Welliver with the assistance of the master printer, Shigemitsu Tsukaguchi (who prints only for Welliver and Lichtenstein) in this painstaking method resulting in the subtle coloring in each plate. Printed on handmade Dieu Donne' paper by Dan Keleher at the Wild Carrot Letterpress in Perpetua, this is a splendid literary event. Michael Feingold, lead drama critic of THE VILLAGE VOICE for the past decade, is internationally known for his translations of Kurt Weill, Brecht, and Ibsen's prose plays, THE PRETENDERS and WHEN WE DEAD AWAKEN. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, NEA Translation Fellowship, and the American Book Award's Lowenfels Prize for Criticism. The late Neil Welliver, celebrated for his ability to merge Abstract Expressionist and representational techniques, has his work in the Whitney, MOMA, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Hirschhorn, Boston, Houston, Baltimore and Philadelphia's museums. He was Professor of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania and resided in Lincolnville, Maine, where the rocky and wooded landscape that figures so frequently in his works bears a strong kinship to the Northern vistas celebrated by Ibsen. Rozmluvy cesko-chorvatsko-italske, 1913 2. Funke-Lipold's Natur-u. Kunstlexikon, V. Bnd, 6 Heft 3. Tetmajer: Z velikeho domu, Praha 4. Riedl: Srdecni choroby, Praha, 1939 5. These seven book[-s were] crushed by grinding in water; from this pulp hand-made paper sheets were made; from these sheets my book no. (55) was bound. Approx. size: 19 x 13 cm Binding in brown leather Hand made by J. H. Kocman in spring 1987 Signed by a blind stamp [JHK in an oval + -09-] on the last page of the end paper" [upper right corner, back paste down]. [signed] JH K. Size of binding: 7 x 9 1/4", contains 42 unnumbered leaves of his specially produced, "re-made" gray-toned, thick, deckle-edged paper, with small bits of Czech, or other language texts (from the 7 ground-up books mentioned above) visible, & sheet #40 shows mounted portions of titlepages of Czech books "pulped" to produce a later book ( No. -09-). Bound with thick, heavy boards covered in a dark brown, roughly-brushed, suede-type leather, with several, darker, transverse, angular lines running across both covers, formed from joining the leather together. In fine condition. A few words by Jiri Valoch about Kocman's experiments in bookbinding & papermaking (slightly edited): “In the year 1979 Kocman’s interest in paper takes the form of his own production of hand-made paper – it is his aim to enliven the traditional way of hand [made] paper production as [an] original ‘art’ category, which he called paper re-making. (By the way: such a conception is near to the understanding of hand [made]paper in Japanese culture). Gradually, he accentuates the various aspects of paper creation and at last he ranges the process of its rise into further semantic contexts [sic]. First he produced hand [made]paper from original raw materials which were soaked in water and ground on [in a] mixer into a water suspension, after adding glue, the paper pulp was put in layers on a felt base, on which the size of the sheet is limited by a frame. The sheet thus gained is pressed to remove the surplus water and dried by air. The result[s] of this work are individual variants of hand [made] paper; analogously, as in [Kocman’s] first bookbinding experiments the results had been the ‘fulfilment and non-fulfilment’ of the rules of bookbinding; thereby, the author [Kocman] is interested in the visual and the haptic [tactile] qualities of the created sheets, their micro-structure and the lyrical character of the detail[s] (this interest has been one of the constants of Kocman’s work for more than ten years now [1980]). In controlling the possibilities of technology, he used as raw material cuttings of hand[made]paper from Velke Losiny, later he emphasized the specific characteristics of the various kinds of paper by [using] some component (Cotton and Flax Paper), which changed their visual or haptic quality. Tea papers were made by mixing tea leaves into the paper pulp and they thus created a document of the author’s private relation to tea (similarly ‘Tobacco Paper’ resulted from a stimulus that allowed him to materialize his own relation to the personality of Josef Vachal). Later he became interested in the transformations of machine papers – he ground beautiful Ingres papers and remade them into ‘Hand-[made]Ingres’. His work with printed paper then led to the destruction of printed texts, [books] to their disintegration into words, syllables, letters or their fragments – here not only the matter [material] of the paper is transformed, but also the text, which in the newly created sheets of hand [made] paper forms a kind of chance ‘three-dimensional collage'."
