Ein Platz fur Hot Dogs [Another Roadside Attraction]

(Hamburg): Rowohlt. (1987). Galley sheets for the German edition of Another Roadside Attraction (A Place for Hot Dogs). Inscribed by Robbins, in German. 11-3/4" x 8-1/4" photocopied sheets, reproducing numerous copy editor's markings and printed on rectos only. Fine. Together with the first German edition, a paperback original, which has slight rubbing and is near fine in wrappers. Uncommon, possibly unique: publisher's seldom keep this "dead matter" after a book is finished, and even the authors usually don't get the dead matter from their foreign publications. First Edition.         I Want to Take Picture

Nexus Press, Atlanta 1987 - FIRST EDITION of one of the seminal photobooks of the 1980's. SIGNED BY BURKE INSIDE ORIGINAL DRAWING OF HIS HAND. One of only 1000 copies printed of the first edition. "Bill Burke has become known for his large-format portraits shot on Polaroid Land film, which have the formality and feel of nineteenth-century photographs whilst remaining acutely modern in their sensibilities. In his best book, I Want to Take Picture, this technique is entirely appropriate, since it records his personal pilgrimage to southeast Asia, duplicating the enterprise of the old colonialist photographers but adding a contemporary twist. "Although the pictures have a nineteenth-century feel, the book is also a diary that records a twentieth-century experience. Burke not only uses his photographs, but also employs documents- reproductions of ephemera like money and bus tickets- and collages them with handwritten captions. The result is a kaleidoscopic impression of his journeys, taking the book out of the documentary realm and into that of the personal road trip. However, this particular sojourn does not merely connate the search for self that occupies so much of late twentieth-century American photography. It also represents a moving attempt to come to terms with some of the events that haunted his generation" (Parr/Badger, The Photobook). Roth 101. Atlanta: Nexus Press, 1987.         Baltasar and Blimunda.

Jonathan Cape, London 1987 - First British edition of the Nobel Prize-winning author's first book to be translated into English. Octavo, original cloth. Signed and dated by Saramago. Fine in a fine dust jacket. The New York Times Book Review has said that Baltasar and Blimunda "[m]uch reverberates in memory after reading this enchanting novel, but most of all the love story which soars over the rest of the action like a flute above a heavy orchestra. Mr. Saramago, a writer of sharp intelligence, keeps this love story under strict control, free of pathos or sentimentality. It is of, and on, the earth." Indeed, "Saramago has produced a novel that is deeply imbedded in the history of his land yet moves in mystical realms. It is a romance and an adventure, a rumination on royalty and religion in 18th century Portugal and a bitterly ironic comment on the uses of power" (Walter Goodman, The New York Times).         Blue Water, Yellow Balls.

(Easthampton, MA) Warwick Press 1987 - Quarto. (4)pp., accordion-fold. One of twenty copies signed by Carol Blinn, who wrote, illustrated, and printed this book. A poem by Blinn is accompanied by a watercolor illustration that extends across the central page spread, depicting three yellow balls floating on a cerulean pool surrounded by evergreen trees. The image is an homage to David Hockney, who made a series of paintings of swimming pools using vibrant shades of acrylic paint. The title page is accented with blue and yellow watercolor, and on the page following the poem is a palette of the watercolors that Blinn used in her illustration. Created by Blinn in the summer of 1987, the book is an ode to the season, bringing alive the bright colors, heat, and slower pace. Bound in tan cloth with a watercolor label evoking the undulation of water. Housed in a matching box backed in light green morocco. Laid in is a portfolio of materials describing the artist's process of imagining, writing, and designing the book. These include diagrams depicting ideas for the book's binding and eleven drafts of the text, evolving from prose to poetry, showing the author's changes. A lovely, scarce book produced in a very small limitation. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        The White Rose

Newton, IA: Tamazunchale Press, 1987. 31pp. Truman Capote's essay describes his first meeting with French author Colette, during which she gave him a crystal paperweight and inspired him to start collecting the objects for himself. The book has been specially bound by Tom McEwan to reflect the world in miniature found in paperweights. In his artist's statement, McEwan explained that his intention was to create "a contemplative, enigmatic design, something which invites the viewer to interpret, examine and explore." Using goatskin, hand-dyed to evoke the "dazzling patterns frozen forever" in crystal, McEwan created swirls of blue, green, pink, and yellow that are transected by shafts of rippling gilt tooling, much as light shines through a paperweight. The design continues onto the doublures, and the flyleaves are hand-colored with acrylic ink to match. Images of statues emerge from within the patterns on the flyleaves, their forms highlighted by more shafts of light in the form of gilt tooling. The technique of incorporating image transfer into the binding is a signature of McEwan's design style. The page edges have been decorated with acrylic ink and rippling gold. The motif continues onto the buckram box, which is decorated with more hand-dyed goatskin arranged in an abstract pattern and surrounded by gilt-tooled rippling lines. Tom McEwan was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 2014 and last year won first in three of the major categories in the Designer Bookbinders Annual Competition, including the Mansfield Medal for the Best Book. He studied fine bookbinding at Glasgow Metropolitan College under Jim Vallance and was the winner of National Library of Scotland's competition in 2008. (2 1/2 by 1 3/4; 63x44mm).

        American Prospects.

Times Books, Houston 1987 - First Edition. Oblong quarto. Fine in a near fine dust jacket that shows a small closed tear. Signed by Sternfeld. A very sharp copy. Roth 101; Parr & Badger; The Photobook: A History Vol.II, Joel Sternfeld's work is considered a classic amongst photography, having permanently enhanced the face of color photography. "American Prospects is less a composed sequence than a series of deceptively classical compositions. But many of the pictures contain wild juxtapositions: firefighters extinguish a blaze while one of their number shops nonchalantly for pumpkins matching the flames; a basketball hoop stands sentry in a new suburban dead end; pretty flowers shimmer alongside a sports car in the same wild pink. The idealized semirural life is really a world of uncanny disquiet, perfectly suited to the still and mute image" (Aperture Magazine). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Schellmann, Munich And New York 1987 - COLOR SCREENPRINT BY ANDY WARHOL. "This print was commissioned to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the Bavarian Reinsurance Company in 1987. It is based on a photograph of Neuschwanstein Castle, a nineteenth-century palace built by King Ludwig of Bavaria in the foothills of the Alps. Today it is an extremely popular tourist attraction and is the most photographed building in Germany. It has also featured in many aspects of contemporary culture from the cover of British band's Blur's 'Country House' album to numerous computer games. Warhol's image combines a screenprinted photograph and hand-drawn lines which were also subsequently screenprinted. Through the colour combination, with the castle dramatically different from the landscape, Warhol creates a collaged effect - a characteristic of his work from the 1980s" (National Galleries of Scotland website). Color screenprint, 1987. Image size: 851x600 mm (33.5x23.63 in). Edition of 1200. With the artist's ink stamp, lower left. Printed by Rupert Jasen Smith, New York. Published by Schellmann, Munich and New York. See Feldman II.372. A spot of soiling at upper margin. A fine impression. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Portrait of Truman Capote

1987. Original pencil drawing of Capote on white paper. Barry Moser is known for his portraits, especially those of authors. These were usually done as wood engravings, but each portrait often began as a line drawing such as this. In 1987, the same year that this portrait was done, Moser illustrated the posthumous first edition of Capote's early story I Remember Grandpa. Image measures 6 1/2 by 4 inches and is tastefully matted. Fine.

I Want To Take Picture [SIGNED]

Nexus Press, Atlanta 1987 - First edition, first printing. Signed with drawing (of Burke's left hand with notations) in ink by Burke verso the front free endpaper. Hardcover. Photographically illustrated laminated paper-covered boards, no dust jacket as issued. Photographs and text by Bill Burke. Unpaginated with numerous four-color and black and white plates, designed by Burke (who also made the duotone and halftone separations) while in residency at Nexus Press in 1987. 15 1/4 x 11 1/2 inches. This first edition was limited to 1000 hardbound copies. CONDITION: Near Fine (slight shelf wear, else Fine). Out of print. Extremely scarce. [Cited in Andrew Roth, ed., The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century. (New York: PPP Editions in association with Roth Horowitz LLC, 2001), in Andrew Roth, ed., The Open Book. (Göteborg, Sweden: Hasselblad Center in association with Steidl Verlag, Göttingen, Germany, 2004), and in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).] Since the early 1980s, Bill Burke has photographed extensively in Southeast Asia, focusing primarily in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Burke's haunting and layered examination of the landscape and people is informed by the collective political and social conscience galvanized by the United States' lengthy occupation and annihilation of these regions before, during, and after the Vietnam War. His lifelong desire to connect personally and viscerally to the people he meets sets his work in an altogether separate category from most artists who photograph outside their circumscribed "experience." Neither overtly political nor proscriptive, Burke's work instead recognizes the personal is indeed political. Gone are the cultural stereotypes we have long seen in images of Southeast Asia. Instead we are able to experience the intensity of the individual through Bill Burke's idiosyncratic and careful observation. He obliterates the notion that the "documentary photograph" is a vehicle for "truth" and compellingly shows the viewer that it is always a form of personal or political propaganda. 'I Want to Take Picture' (Nexus Press, 1987) is a combination artist book and 'travelogue.' It is considered by many to be one of the very best, disturbing and important books in the history of photography. From Bill Burke (1987): "Each day, I was thinking about practicality, is my pass in order, how do I get there, who do I meet that will get me through. The philosophical thoughts came later. When I realized that I had access to the camps and could see the Khmer Rouge, it was like being able to see the Devil. It seamed to be an incredible opportunity." From an interview with Bill Burke by Willis Hartshorn (New York City, June 1987): "Hartshorn: 'Do you find it problematic that in a politically savage environment your pictures are often ambiguous as to who's good and who's bad?' Burke: 'I have no problem with ambiguity. Again, all the information is filtered, everything I know about it is secondhand. I know what the refugees at the border say and what books say. I heard how bad the Khmer Rouge were, and then as I read more I found out the other people had been bad too. The people who were victims at one time were victimizing others at another time. There are two sides, the information is slanted, and it's good that people understand that. . . I would like things to be spelled out clearly so I wouldn't have to think about it. But that's not the way it is. I can't say this is this and that is that. There is no indisputable truth.'" Signed by Author [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Later Chinese Painting and Calligraphy: 1800?1950, 3 VOLS.

Three volumes, 400+370+262 pages, large format, hardbound and slipcased, total weight about 13 kg !Western critics and historians of Chinese painting had long looked on the 19th and early 20th centuries as a sort of dead zone in the development of Chinese art, attributing the work of more modern Chinese masters to a burst of creativity inspired by the "eccentrics" of the 17th and 18th centuries. Maverick collector Robert H. Ellsworth revealed the error of this assumption when he acquired a number of brilliant 19th-century Chinese paintings in the 1960s. What he discerned was a period of enormous change and innovation, influenced both by a major shift in Chinese art toward calligraphy and seals (prompting more brutal, energetic brushwork) and by increasing exposure to the West; clearly, Ellsworth argues, these 19th-century paintings were the true precedents for modern Chinese art. This three-volume catalog is a singular exploration of this unjustly overlooked era and is a superb example of the bookbinder's art in its own right, originally priced at USD 850. It beautifully reproduces all 471 paintings Ellsworth donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art as of 1987, along with hundreds of images of calligraphic scrolls and fans. The index volume contains commentaries and biographies of 300 artists and calligraphers, along with transliterations into Chinese script of every inscription and seal. The three volumes are bound in silk, with embossed gold stamping, petite Chinese calligraphic scrolls applied to the covers, and gilt-edged pages, all enclosed in a similarly decorated clamshell case in brown silk.FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE; a surcharge applies only for USA and Canada.==============================================================
