Il Merlo Ha Perso Il Becco

Milano: Danese, 1987. Munari, Bruno. Oblong quarto. (6)ff. First edition. This book is an interpretation of an old Italian song for children about a blackbird who loses his beak, and was designed based on a concept that Munari first developed in 1940. In this creative children's book, Various parts of a blackbird are printed on transparent sheets of PVC plastic, so that in the beginning, the entire blackbird is visible. First, the poor blackbird loses its beak as the page is turned, and then its eye, wing, and leg, and so on, until all that is left is its heart. Below the illustration is the text of each verse of the song, and the chorus. Bound in flexible black plastic covers with a design of blackbirds on musical staves on the front, and the music to the song on the back, printed in white. Housed in a mylar sleeve, which also contains a folded sheet with a description of the book in a separate compartment. In fine condition. The book was originally accompanied by a cassette tape, which is missing from this set.

        Elamisches Wörterbuch (in 2 Bänden). Teil 1: A-H. Teil 2: I-Z.

Berlin : Reimer, 1987.. 1392 S. Originalleinen.. ISBN 3496009233

Autograph Letter Signed, 2 pages on one sheet 4to, n.p., "Monday," n.d. but 1945

To Captain Rago at the office of the Military Attaché, American Embassy. "This is to introduce Pollack and Carmen of the Carmen show. I saw it the other night and I think they do get the indecency, the gaiety, and the sadness, and I think it is very important that it should be given again in Paris and America, but they have plans but they want a little conversation and suggestion and I am sending them to you because I think you can give them some of both, w/ pleasure ." Signed, "Always, Gertrude Stein." With holograph envelope that was most probably hand delivered. Tape stains on verso at corners and one small corner tear. Stein's reference to the "Carmen Show" refers to "Carmen - GI version," a U.S. army troop entertainment show put on by soldiers for army soldiers. The story of this show is revealed by its surviving members. Joe Pollock [the Mr. Pollock of Stein's letter], a retired Philadelphia High School principal and member of the 63rd Infantry Division, along with others in the 63rd, put together a show "right after the military madness of World War II ended in Europe... [when] peace caught them unawares in the south German town of Tuberbischofsheim." Pollock recalled, "While we were waiting to get shipped to the Pacific to fight the Japanese [which they never did get to], El Stinko and me and a few other malcontents decided to put on a show to entertain the guys." The story is told by John Corr in an article titled , "A Tough Act To Follow," for Philly.com ([articles.philly.com/1987-10-23/news/26212560_1_reunion-town-hall-show]. Corr reports what veteran soldiers told him about Gertrude Stein. "Literary salon-keepers Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas caught the show in Paris and invited producer Pollock and a few others for 'tea and gingerbread'. The Stein-Toklas appraisal of the performance was a rave: 'Killing, Killing, Killing'." The soldiers described the Carmen show. "That slapped-together show ran for seven months, and was the big hit of the 1945 European Theater season." When Pollock met with Corr and a half dozen other survivors in Philadelphia in 1987, Corr reported that it was the "first full-scale reunion of the cast of "Carmen - GI version, circa 1945." Included in the cast was jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd. The performers said they just wanted to get out of the pup tents and mud, so they started this show. "We were supposed to do just three shows at the town hall in Tuberbischofsheim... then somebody from division saw the act, and, first thing we knew, we were on the road," one of the performers told Corr. On the road meant 143 shows in seven months in Germany, France and Italy. The performers told Corr the show was mostly burlesque, with hilarious, irreverent acts, and gave them all a cheerful camaraderie. Stein wrote our letter in 1945 after she went back to Paris from Culoz. She left Culoz in December of 1944. In a published letter from Stein to Carl Van Vechten ("The Letters of Gertrude Stein and Carl Van Vechten 1913-1946" by Edward Burns) postmarked 3 Jan. 1945, Stein says they had just moved back to Paris. Our research did not reveal additional information about Captain Rago, Stein's correspondent.

        Lake Isle of Innisfree.

Edition du Palimpseste 1987 - Six etchings by Nathalie Grall. Copy 23/47 signed by the illustrator.Full pre-textured blue cowhide with lightly planed design, lettered in pale blue foil. Japanese paper endpapers. Bound by Christine Giard in 2011.Nathalie Grall (b.1961) is a French engraver who is known for the energetic, painterly gestures of her engravings. In her work she explores the edges of the abstract and the figurative. She has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. The most recent exhibit of her work was at Musée Goya in 2014-2015.Christine has used found leather not intended for bookbinding, pared it thin enough to use as a binding material, and planed it lightly with a subtle design that, combined with the texture of the leather, beautifully echoes Grall's engravings. Christine's understated lettering floats along with design.Christine Giard has been studying and teaching bookbinding for over 35 years. Her formal academic background is in the sciences, but her true love has always been the arts: literature, drawing, painting, music, and nature photography. Christine discovered bookbinding while she was creating floral art, one of many ways she found to combine art with her love of nature. In bookbinding, Christine found the perfect combination of her interests and talents. She immerses herself completely in the combination of the precision required in binding structures of all kinds, the attributes of the (mostly) natural materials involved, the freedom to choose or create the materials she uses to realize her designs, and the opportunities to never, ever stop learning. Her passion and creativity is evident in her bindings. Christine’s design aesthetic leans toward minimalism, but her use of unexpected techniques and materials create a tightly controlled tension that makes her work vibrate with energy.Christine is trained in trade binding, design binding, restoration, conservation binding, paper-making, and several paper marbling and dyeing techniques. She loves that she can work in all of these areas and combine them as she chooses.Christine has studied with many reknowned bookbinding artists, including: Micheline de Bellefroid, Michel Richard, Hugo Peller, Edwin Heim, Vladimir Tchekeroul, Sun Evrard, Helene Jolis, Edgard Claes, and Anne Goy.         Waffenruhe. Berlinische Galerie Fotografische Sammlung.

(30 x 26,7 cm) 4°.. - "... a European appropriation of an American vocabulary ..." (Badger a.a.O.) Vielleicht das amerikanischste deutsche Photobuch ... Kreuzberg und die "Mauer" vor dem 9. November 1989 - Parr/ Badger II, 65. Roth, The Open Book 336. Auer 673. "Die Lithos fertigte O. R. T. Kirchner + Graser, Berlin. Gesetzt aus der Walbaum Standard von Typologika Fotosatz GmbH, Berlin. Gedruckt bei Heenemann, Berlin. ... Die Aufnahmen entstanden in der Zeit von 1985-87." Mit minimalen Alters- und Gebrauchsspuren, die Ecken ganz leicht berieben und die untere hintere minimal verknickt. Gerry Badger schrieb bereits 1987 in einer Rezension über "Waffenruhe" in "Creative Camera": "... Schmidt confirms that photography certainly can be enough, a medium rich in allusion, visual surprise, and narrative quality when utilised by an intelligent mind's eye. .... Michael Schmidt has created a fetid poetry and an introspective gloom. This derives formally from the likes of Lewis Baltz and John Gossage - especially Gossage - but exudes a rhapsodic intensity of its own that marks it immediately as a European appropriation of an American vocabulary. Certainly, the pain and sense of loss running through the whole book like a subliminal subtext would seem to be as much personal as historical, as eschatological as phenomenal, as much diary as report. Waffenruhe is a subjective, deeply felt work, elegiac and bitter by turns. This is confirmed by the book's oblique, stream-of-consciousness text, and the bleak portraits of the photographer's daughters, even of himself in the final frame, the very picture of a somewhat inebriated, German Dylan Thomas, and sharing that artist's acute sense of the poetry of things, the fresh slant upon the apparently simple and obvious. As Janos Frecot writes in his brief afterword, Waffenruhe is not directly a book about Berlin, but a book that could have only been inspired by Berlin, a cri-de-coeur that could have emanated only from a Berliner." MAC

Kickshaw Press, Paris 1987 - One of 40 copies.Slipcase with closure made in polycarbonate, lined in velour, and airbrushed with automotive paint. Created by Sonya Sheats. 20 x 19.5 cmBeckett wrote Mercier et Camier in French in 1946, but refused to publish it until 1970. It wasn't until 1974 that an edition in English was published. While translating the novel from French to English, Beckett made substantial deletions and changes. This small edition consists of the passages Beckett eliminated from Mercier and Camier when he translated it from the original French to into English.Sonya began her binding studies in the studio of Anne Vion in France in 2000. She has been practicing and teaching bookbinding ever since, returning to France frequently to study with master binders, including Edgard Claes, Sün Evrard, Michel Richard, and Florent Rousseau. Sonya works with unusual leathers, wood, and polycarbonate as well as more traditional materials and structures. Her art ranges from minimalist leather bindings in muted hues to raucous colors and designs rendered on polycarbonate using automotive paint. No matter what material or structure, Sonya’s craftsmanship and sense of style shine. Sonya’s work can be found in private collections in the United States and Europe. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
