        PHOTOGRAPH - Signed

1987 - Signed "To Mark Roth / Richard Feynman" in blue ink. this photograph measures 4" X 6" and is in fine condition. This autograph was obtained in person. Richard P. Feynman was born in Queens, New York, on May 11, 1918, to Jewish (although non-practicing) parents. By age 15, he had mastered differential and integral calculus, and frequently experimented and re-created mathematical topics such as the half-derivative before even entering college. Feynman received a bachelor's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1939, and was named Putnam Fellow that same year. He received a Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1942, and in his theses applied the principle of stationery action to problems of quantum mechanics, laying the groundwork for the "path integral" approach and Feynman diagrams. While researching his Ph.D., Feynman married his first wife and longtime sweetheart, Arline Greenbaum, who was already quite ill with tuberculosis. At Princeton, Robert W. Wilson encouraged Feynman to participate in the Manhattan Project. He did so, visiting his wife in a sanitarium in Albuquerque on weekends until her death in July 1945. He then immersed himself in work on the project and was present at the Trinity bomb test. Hans Bethe made the 24 year old Feynman a group leader in the theoretical division. Although his work on the project was relatively removed from the major action, Feynman did calculate neutron equations for the Los Alamos "Water Boiler," a small nuclear reactor at the desert lab, in order to measure how close a particular assembly of fissile material was to becoming critical. After this work, he was transferred to the Oak Ridge facility, where he aided engineers in calculating safety procedures for material storage so that inadvertent criticality accidents could be avoided. After the project, Feynman started working as a professor at Cornell University, and then moved to Cal Tech in Pasadena, Calif., where he did much of his best work including research in quantum electrodynamics, the physics of the superfluidity of supercooled liquid helium, and a model of weak decay. Feynman's collaboration on the latter with Murray Gell-Mann was seen as seminal, as the weak interaction was neatly described. He also developed Feynman diagrams, a bookkeeping device that helps in conceptualizing and calculating interactions between particles in spacetime, notably the interactions between electrons and their antimatter counterparts, positrons. He later married Gweneth Howarth and had a son, Carl Richard, and a daughter, Michelle Catherine. In 1965, Feynman, along with Julian Schwinger and Shinichiro Tomonaga, shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for work in quantum electrodynamics. Feynman's popular lection series was published in "The Feynman Lectures," while his personal side was captured in "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!" and "What Do You Care What Other People Think?" Feynman is also known for his work on the Space Shuttle Challenger accident investigation, shocking the world by demonstrating the failure of the O-Rings. He died February 15, 1988, at the age of 69, from several rare forms of cancer. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

EQUAL RITES (Pristine First Edition Signed by Author and Illustrator)

Gollancz, London 1987 - Gollancz, Henrietta Street, Covent Garden (at the time). 1987. This was the author's first book published by Gollancz in the good old days, when the publisher had modest offices in Covent Garden and the author's signing sessions - although successful - were just moderately well attended. This is an immaculate copy, which makes connoisseurs of pristine boards dribble with excitement, whose immaculate spine sends a shiver down the you-know-what of combative vertebrates, whose pages are clean and wholesome, and whose magnificent dust jacket is, of course, illustrated by the late Josh Kirby.         The Wink, The Kiss, The Slap

Dallas, Texas:: Black Rose Press,, 1987-88.. Edition of 15. 3 x 4 x 3" plexiglas box with 3 flip books in drawers. Books: 3 x 2" miniatures bound in fur. Letterpress printed. Susan Kae Grant: "Inspired by failed relationships, [this work] consists of three miniature flip books bound in rabbit fur and contained in a plexiglas jewel box. On the surface, the books appear to be light and entertaining. However, upon closer examination the tiny flip books become painful symbols and reminders of the growing number of dysfunctional relationships in the culture. Beginning with the courting process, the reader is introduced to familiar issues such as 'pursuit,' 'trust,' 'response,' and 'deception.' The combinations of materials (fur and cubic zirconium) represent symbols used in society for enticement. The transparent and closed quality of the box entices the viewer, yet also provides a barrier much as the behavior that shapes human relationships."The three fur-bound books are presented in a treasure like chest with a 'man made' diamond mounted in the pull of each drawer. Fur and diamonds symbolize and represent the status people are encouraged to search for in relationships and the treasures the consumer industry has taught them to expect. "Repetitive text is printed letterpress on cards stock and contact-size photographs are original laser prints. Each of the three books is bound in a color chosen symbolically for the intended message. While flipping the pages, the alternation between male and female stares, winks, and kisses is barely noticeable and seems innocent. In the last book, The Slap, gender is hardly decipherable and the physical gesture combined with the color no longer appears innocent.

Things Change Medallion, and Autograph Note Signed

1987. A sterling silver medallion, dated Fall 1987, a year before the film's release, with the title and the two principal cities of the film, Chicago and Tahoe, printed on the perimeter. Of unknown (to us) purpose, but presented by Mamet, with an autograph note signed to a collector: "To ___ - Here is an item I do not think you have - with all best wishes/ David/ 6F95." The medallion is 1-5/8" in diameter, and has two ribbon attachment points on the back (no ribbon present). The note is on the back of Mamet's business card (which states only "David Mamet"), and it has been curled around the medallion, with retained creases. Exceedingly scarce memorabilia of a Mamet film, with a note attesting to its provenance being directly from the author himself.
