        The Flood.

Edinburgh, Polygon, 1986. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. Pp188. Soft cover issue, published simultaneously with the hardback. Minor wear, read once. Signed by the Author, with his hangman's gallows motif below. This copy belonged to 'Apple' Jon Curt, flat-mate and fellow student of English at Edinburgh University, who graduated with first class honours but then abandoned his doctoral thesis after a year. By way of compensation Rankin made him 'Dr. Curt', forensic pathologist of the Rebus novels. Truly scarce- whilst technically more common than the hardback (around 750 copies compared with 300), our experience shows this as the more elusive of the two (no others available at time of writing). This may be down to the fact that paperbacks are read and lost/discarded more often than hardbacks.

        Postcard to Roy Kerridge.

Postcard 14 x 11 cm, red ink on cream card with design of dove of peace to front, manuscript message with musical notation signed by Pete Seeger to reverse with US 22 cent stamp, sent from his home in Beacon, NY; horizontal creases across card, very good. This is a fascinating postcard from Pete Seeger (b. 1919), the singer and song-writer whose work in the post-war period made him a senior and pivotal figure in the folk revival of the 1960s. He wrote protest songs such as "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" and "If I Had A Hammer" that were of central importance to the burgeoning folk and underground movements and which were inspirational to the young Bob Dylan, of whom Seeger was an early supporter. The Byrds were heavily indebted to him, including famous versions of his songs "Turn, Turn, Turn" and "The Bells of Rhymney" alongside several Dylan numbers on their first album. A card-carrying communist in his youth, he was blacklisted by US television for many years and continues to record politically-charged music together with his beloved traditional folksongs to this day. This little message to the British writer Roy Kerridge reveals Seeger the musicologist, tracing the origins of the song "Kumbaya" back to the South Carolina gospel song "Come by here" , with the observation, which once made seems so obvious that one wonders why one had never noticed it before, that it uses the melody of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". Kerridge is a man thoroughly in tune with Seeger's beliefs. In his 2011 autobiographical novel Stalin's Schoolboy, Kerridge, who was brought up by Marxist parents, puts this definition of communism into the mouth of his 11 year old self: "'It means that you like Russia more than England, you don't like God and Empire, but you do like folk tales and folksongs. You like primitive people better than white people, so you stick up for the Indians, not Cowboys'".

        Cat alphabet

1986 - Original ink designs for an alphabet formed from cats, signed and dated by the artist. Blegvad was a prolific children's book artist, whose atmospheric ink drawings are often compared to Gorey and Sendak. His illustrations graced more than 100 picture books, of which the best known is probably Mary Norton's Bedknob and Broomstick. Each letter of this charming alphabet is composed of cats contorted (as is the nature of cats) into the shape of the letter. The images range from the humorous K, where a cat bites the tail of an unsuspecting feline victim, to the endearing E, where a mother cat nurses her kittens. These designs were eventually used for a set of rubber stamps. Framed in a simple white mat and black frame. Very fine. (Image measures 9 1/2 by 5 7/8 inches [24x15cm]; frame measures 13 5/8 by 10 1/8 inches [35x26cm]). [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        The Last Worthless Evening

Boston: Godine. (1986). A collection of four novellas and two stories by one of the writers who helped to resurrect the short story as a literary form in America in the 1970s and 80s. This copy is inscribed by Dubus to Kurt Vonnegut: "For Kurt/ with gratitude to my old neighbor and with my deep love -/ Andre/ 1 February 1987." Additionally signed in full on the title page. Laid in is a carbon receipt for travel on the Eastern Airlines Shuttle on February 5th, signed by Vonnegut. Also laid in is a silent auction bidding form for two round trip tickets on Pan Am Airlines, to benefit The Friends of Andre Dubus Literary Series. Dubus was severely injured when he went to the aid of a disabled motorist and was himself hit by a car, causing him to lose one leg and the use of his other. A number of writer friends, spearheaded by Vonnegut, John Updike and several others, arranged a series of literary events to benefit Dubus and help offset his medical bills. Dubus and Vonnegut had gotten to know each other decades earlier, in the 1960s, at the Iowa Writers Workshop, where Vonnegut was teaching and Dubus was a student, at time Dubus refers to when he mentions his "old neighbor." An excellent association copy between two of the most highly regarded American writers of the second half of the 20th century. A fine copy in a good dust jacket, with several jagged tears. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine.

      - CONOVER,CHRIS. ORIGINAL ART: FROGGIE WENT A-COURTING. Offered here are 2 finished watercolors used as the title page and frontispiece illustrations of Conover's Froggie Went A-Courting published by Ferrar Strauss Giroux in 1986, reviewed by School Library Journal as a 'tour de force.' The pieces are drawn on a single piece of artist board that can be separated and framed individually. The frontis measures 7" wide x 9" high, signed. Admiral Frog in a tri-cornered hat and with a walking stick is striding down the gang plank of an old boat while his wife and two little froggie children look on. A frog ship's mate stands in the lookout. The piece on the right has a very beautiful coach that will be pulled by 3 catarpillars that are currently housed in their stall. (In the book itself, the printed information was inserted above the coach which is just blue sky in the piece itself). Conover has been illustrating children's books since 1974. Her work is noted for rich colors and incredible attention to detail, some of which is executed using a magnifying glass for accuracy. There is plenty to look at but without the overcrowding that hampers many books. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Morandi. I giorni di Grizzana

Edizioni d arte Ghelfi, Verona 1986 - Bross. editoriale fig. Ottimo esemplare. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
