Jorge Francisco Isidoro Luis Borges, KBE (Spanish: [ˈxorxe ˈlwis ˈβorxes]  audio (help·info); 24 August 1899 - 14 June 1986) was an Argentine short-story writer, essayist, poet and translator born in Buenos Aires. His work embraces the "character of unreality in all literature".[1] His best-known books, Ficciones (Fictions) and The Aleph (El Aleph), published in the 1940s, are compilations of short stories interconnected by common themes, including dreams, labyrinths, libraries, mirrors, fictional writers, philosophy, and religion. Borges's works have contributed to philosophical literature and also to the fantasy genre. Critic Ángel Flores, the first to use the term magical realism to define a genre that reacted against the dominant realism and naturalism of the 19th century,[2] considers the beginning of the movement to be the release of Borges's A Universal History of Infamy (Historia universal de la infamia).[2][3] However, some critics would consider Borges to be a predecessor and not actually a magical realist. His late poems dialogue with such cultural figures as Spinoza, Camões, and Virgil. In 1914 his family moved to Switzerland, where he studied at the Collège de Genève. The family travelled widely in Europe, including stays in Spain. On his return to Argentina in 1921, Borges began publishing his poems and essays in surrealist literary journals. He also worked as a librarian and public lecturer. In 1955 he was appointed director of the National Public Library and professor of Literature at the University of Buenos Aires. He became completely blind at the age of 55; as he never learned braille, he became unable to read. Scholars have suggested that his progressive blindness helped him to create innovative literary symbols through imagination.[4] In 1961 he came to international attention when he received the first Prix International, which he shared with Samuel Beckett. In 1971 he won the Jerusalem Prize. His work was translated and published widely in the United States and in Europe. Borges himself was fluent in several languages. He dedicated his final work, The Conspirators, to the city of Geneva, Switzerland.[5] His international reputation was consolidated in the 1960s, aided by his works being available in English, by the Latin American Boom and by the success of García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude.[6] Writer and essayist J. M. Coetzee said of him: "He, more than anyone, renovated the language of fiction and thus opened the way to a remarkable generation of Spanish American novelists."[

Each volume with original beige/grey cloth with black lettering to spine and front cover; Vols II to VI with their original lithographic dust-jackets protected with original acetates. Original cardboard slipcase for volume II only. First American edition of the six-volume catalogue raisonné of Chagall's lithographs, richly illustrated with 27 out of 28 original lithographs (lacking the lithographic dust-jacket of volume 1). "Chagall's emblematic irrationality shook off all outside influences: color governed his compositions, calling up chimerical processions of memory where reality and the imaginary are woven into a single legend, born in Vitebsk and dreamed in Paris" (Dictionary of Modern Art). For Chagall, the medium of lithography did not come easily. Printer Fernand Mourlot ran a lithography press where such greats as Braque, Matisse, Picasso, Miró and Chagall came to have their designs printed and to learn about this still nascent print-making process. "For many long months Chagall came and worked tirelessly, and his dissatisfaction allowed him to have only a few of his first attempts printed" (Sorlier, 45). Volumes I and II contain 23 (of 24) of the original 28 lithographs published throughout the series (once again, Vol. I is lacking its original lithographic dust-jacket); the dust jackets and frontispieces of Volumes III and IV account for the remaining four. Volume V was published near the end of Chagall's life, and Volume VI was published posthumously. All were issued separately over a period of 26 years, and published simultaneously in English and French. For more information, see: Gauss, 391. Freitag 1914. See Cramer, 43, 56, 77, 94.Vol. I with sporadic offsetting along edges of binding, and clear water-staining at top paper edge and upper fore-edge (not affecting pages). Vol. V with closed tear along acetate's back cover; dust-jacket rubbed at head and tail of spine, and previous owner's Ex-Libris on inside of front cover (Israel Perry). Slipcase in fair, bindings in good (Vol. I) to very good; acetate in good- to very good, dust-jackets in good+ (Vol. V) to very good; interior in very good condition.

        Paul Graham: Beyond Caring [SIGNED]

Grey Editions, Bristol 1986 - First edition, first printing. Signed in black ink on the half-title page by Graham. Soft cover. Photographically illustrated wrappers; no dust jacket as issued. Photographs, text and design by Paul Graham. Unpaginated, with 32 four-color plates. 9-1/4 x 11-1/2 inches. Scarce. [Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).]. Fine. A Mint copy. From the publisher: "Beyond Caring is a searing indictment of the conditions in social security and unemployment benefit offices across Britain. Throughout 1984 and 1985 photographer Paul Graham visited the waiting rooms, corridors and cubicles of the Department of Health and Social Security and the Department of Employment, to document the squalor, all-day queues and inadequate service in this most vital section of the welfare state. Each photograph dramatically conveys the misery and sheer human waste endured by the many millions at the poorer end of our society. They build to form a unique document of the suffering and hardship caused under the current welfare benefits system, and give powerful voice to the argument for its compassionate reform."         Konzert für Klavier und Orchester. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. (1985-88). Faksimile-Partitur/Facsimile-Score. ED 7746

Schott, Mainz, London, New York, Paris, Tokyo 1986 - First edition. Limited, one of 100 numbered and signed copies, of the 700 total edition. In publisher's hard paper wrappers. (156) p. One of the one hundred signed copies of the facsimile edition of Ligeti's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. György Ligeti's Piano Concerto, whose Movements I-III were completed in 1986, and IV-V in 1988. Scored for a reduced orchestra with unusual instruments such as harmonica, slide whistles, and an ocarina. Ligeti considered as his most complex and technically demanding score. The first three movements were premiered in Graz in 1986, the entire work was first played in Vienna in 1988, both times conducted by Maria di Bonaventure, whom the piece is dedicated. György Ligeti (1923-2006) was a Hungarian (Transylvanian) born composer. Studied at the Music Academy of Cluj and Budapest. After his graduation, he started to collect folk music in Romania and taught composing and counterpointing at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He left Hungary after the revolution in 1956 and started to work at the radio station in Cologne where he made acquaintance with Karlheinz Stockhausen who had a major influence on his art. In 1959 settled down in Vienna and became a citizen in 1967. Taught at the Universities of Darmstadt, Stockholm, Stanford and Hamburg. Under the influence of Stockhausen, he started to compose music for electronic instruments (eg. Artikulation and Atmosphères), thus earned a reputation in the Western European music scene. After these works he gave up composing electronic music but his experiences with such instruments made and effect on his later compositions. His music could be characterised as a mixture of Western avant-garde music and Hungarian folk music combined with sense of humour and absurd. Lower right corner slightly bumped, otherwise in fine condition. In publisher's hard paper wrappers First edition. Limited, one of 100 numbered and signed copies, of the 700 total edition.         Il sistema mi ha messo in Croce

Torino, Italy: Stygian, 1986. Folder. Ex-Library. 31 cm. Includes fold-out collage "mail art" by Cavellini, signed by the artist with London, Ontario postmark. Also: three unused stickers from the exhibition, one large stamp and cow sticker, and 20 beautiful full-colour plates of artwork. Loose sheets in black paper folder. Folder is rough edged and worn. Exhibition sticker inside the front. Discreet library markings. Living-Room Exhibition. Translated reads as: "I Have Been Crucified by the System". Medieval style crucifixes with the artists' face replacing that of Christ. Cavellini coined the term "autostoricizzazione" (self-historcization) and created his own popular history. He was also a prolific collector of abstract art. His correspondence pioneered "mail-art" when he his new work by post to 15,000 recipients. Appropriating art history, as can be seen in this album, was a means for Cavellini not to deconstruct traditions, but to insert himself into them.

In a National Endowment for the Arts interview, she recalled being introduced to his songs by her longtime accompanist, David Garvey, saying 'I fell in love with them. It's just the way he writes, and from then on he was on my program often.' She also recalled the standing ovation Hoiby's songs brought at a 1991 Carnegie Hall recital." Timothy Freenfield-Sanders/G. In den folgenden Jahren wurden seine Zeichnungen aber immer farbiger, komplexer und kompositorisch dichter. Er fügte zuerst seinen Abbildungen ausführliche Titel hinzu und entwickelte daraus schließlich jenes erzählerische, dokumentarische Stilmittel der \"Inschriftierung\". Seine späteren Blätter sind oft mit Schrift und Bild und nur wenig Lücken bis an den Rand gefüllt...\" (Zitat) Versand D: 7,00 EUR Kunst

        Birds of New Guinea

Princeton, New Jersey: Princeton University Press, 1986. 293 Pages Indexed. Handbook No.9 of the Wau Ecology Institute in Papua New Guinea. Dark gray cloth with silver lettering on spine. Used book in As New condition. Interior text pages are flawless. This book is the first definitive ornithological field guide to New Guinea, the world's second largest island and one of the richest tropical environments in the Old World. Because of its isolation, New Guinea's biota includes spectacular radiations of unusual plants and animals of which the birds of paradise are perhaps best known. The region has long attracted naturalists, ecologists, and anthropologists. This book treats all of the more than 700 species of birds recorded from the region, illustrating more than 600 of them in forty-seven fine color plates and eight black-and-white halftone plates. The text contains species accounts treating identification, distribution, ecology, vocalizations, and behavior. This is preceded by a detailed introduction to the region, with sections on climate, biogeography, rain forest ecology, and conservation. A chief contribution of the book is the wealth of information on the habits of many of the region's little-known species. Included is an ornithological gazetteer, along with four maps showing natural features and important ornithological localities. Bruce Beehler is Scientific Assistant to the Secretary Emeritus, Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, D.C. Dale A. Zimmerman is Professor of Biology at Western New Mexico University. Thane K. Pratt is a wildlife biologist with the Division of Fish and Wildlife, Commonwealth Northern Marianas. . Fourth Printing. Hard Back. As New/Near Fine. Illus. by Zimmerman, Dale A.; Coe, James. 6 1/2" X 9 1/2".
