Jorge Francisco Isidoro Luis Borges, KBE (Spanish: [ˈxorxe ˈlwis ˈβorxes]  audio (help·info); 24 August 1899 - 14 June 1986) was an Argentine short-story writer, essayist, poet and translator born in Buenos Aires. His work embraces the "character of unreality in all literature".[1] His best-known books, Ficciones (Fictions) and The Aleph (El Aleph), published in the 1940s, are compilations of short stories interconnected by common themes, including dreams, labyrinths, libraries, mirrors, fictional writers, philosophy, and religion. Borges's works have contributed to philosophical literature and also to the fantasy genre. Critic Ángel Flores, the first to use the term magical realism to define a genre that reacted against the dominant realism and naturalism of the 19th century,[2] considers the beginning of the movement to be the release of Borges's A Universal History of Infamy (Historia universal de la infamia).[2][3] However, some critics would consider Borges to be a predecessor and not actually a magical realist. His late poems dialogue with such cultural figures as Spinoza, Camões, and Virgil. In 1914 his family moved to Switzerland, where he studied at the Collège de Genève. The family travelled widely in Europe, including stays in Spain. On his return to Argentina in 1921, Borges began publishing his poems and essays in surrealist literary journals. He also worked as a librarian and public lecturer. In 1955 he was appointed director of the National Public Library and professor of Literature at the University of Buenos Aires. He became completely blind at the age of 55; as he never learned braille, he became unable to read. Scholars have suggested that his progressive blindness helped him to create innovative literary symbols through imagination.[4] In 1961 he came to international attention when he received the first Prix International, which he shared with Samuel Beckett. In 1971 he won the Jerusalem Prize. His work was translated and published widely in the United States and in Europe. Borges himself was fluent in several languages. He dedicated his final work, The Conspirators, to the city of Geneva, Switzerland.[5] His international reputation was consolidated in the 1960s, aided by his works being available in English, by the Latin American Boom and by the success of García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude.[6] Writer and essayist J. M. Coetzee said of him: "He, more than anyone, renovated the language of fiction and thus opened the way to a remarkable generation of Spanish American novelists."[

Konzert für Klavier und Orchester. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. (1985-88). Faksimile-Partitur/Facsimile-Score. ED 7746

Schott, Mainz, London, New York, Paris, Tokyo 1986 - First edition. Limited, one of 100 numbered and signed copies, of the 700 total edition. In publisher's hard paper wrappers. (156) p. One of the one hundred signed copies of the facsimile edition of Ligeti's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. György Ligeti's Piano Concerto, whose Movements I-III were completed in 1986, and IV-V in 1988. Scored for a reduced orchestra with unusual instruments such as harmonica, slide whistles, and an ocarina. Ligeti considered as his most complex and technically demanding score. The first three movements were premiered in Graz in 1986, the entire work was first played in Vienna in 1988, both times conducted by Maria di Bonaventure, whom the piece is dedicated. György Ligeti (1923-2006) was a Hungarian (Transylvanian) born composer. Studied at the Music Academy of Cluj and Budapest. After his graduation, he started to collect folk music in Romania and taught composing and counterpointing at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He left Hungary after the revolution in 1956 and started to work at the radio station in Cologne where he made acquaintance with Karlheinz Stockhausen who had a major influence on his art. In 1959 settled down in Vienna and became a citizen in 1967. Taught at the Universities of Darmstadt, Stockholm, Stanford and Hamburg. Under the influence of Stockhausen, he started to compose music for electronic instruments (eg. Artikulation and Atmosphères), thus earned a reputation in the Western European music scene. After these works he gave up composing electronic music but his experiences with such instruments made and effect on his later compositions. His music could be characterised as a mixture of Western avant-garde music and Hungarian folk music combined with sense of humour and absurd. Lower right corner slightly bumped, otherwise in fine condition. In publisher's hard paper wrappers First edition. Limited, one of 100 numbered and signed copies, of the 700 total edition. Exhibition sticker inside the front. Discreet library markings. Living-Room Exhibition. Translated reads as: "I Have Been Crucified by the System". Medieval style crucifixes with the artists' face replacing that of Christ. Cavellini coined the term "autostoricizzazione" (self-historcization) and created his own popular history. He was also a prolific collector of abstract art. His correspondence pioneered "mail-art" when he his new work by post to 15,000 recipients. Appropriating art history, as can be seen in this album, was a means for Cavellini not to deconstruct traditions, but to insert himself into them.

        Birds of New Guinea

Princeton, New Jersey: Princeton University Press, 1986. 293 Pages Indexed. Handbook No.9 of the Wau Ecology Institute in Papua New Guinea. Dark gray cloth with silver lettering on spine. Used book in As New condition. Interior text pages are flawless. This book is the first definitive ornithological field guide to New Guinea, the world's second largest island and one of the richest tropical environments in the Old World. Because of its isolation, New Guinea's biota includes spectacular radiations of unusual plants and animals of which the birds of paradise are perhaps best known. The region has long attracted naturalists, ecologists, and anthropologists. This book treats all of the more than 700 species of birds recorded from the region, illustrating more than 600 of them in forty-seven fine color plates and eight black-and-white halftone plates. The text contains species accounts treating identification, distribution, ecology, vocalizations, and behavior. This is preceded by a detailed introduction to the region, with sections on climate, biogeography, rain forest ecology, and conservation. A chief contribution of the book is the wealth of information on the habits of many of the region's little-known species. Included is an ornithological gazetteer, along with four maps showing natural features and important ornithological localities. Bruce Beehler is Scientific Assistant to the Secretary Emeritus, Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, D.C. Dale A. Zimmerman is Professor of Biology at Western New Mexico University. Thane K. Pratt is a wildlife biologist with the Division of Fish and Wildlife, Commonwealth Northern Marianas. . Fourth Printing. Hard Back. As New/Near Fine.         ODCZYTANIE POPIOLOW Kriat efer-mikle [= a reading of ashes]

Gazit, Tel Aviv, Israel 1986 - Hebrew translation pages face the Polish pages. The Hebrew is vowelized. Bibliophilic edition of 625 numbered copies. Jerzy Ficowski (October 4, 1924, Warsaw - May 9, 2006, Warsaw) was a Polish poet, writer and translator (from Yiddish, Russian, Romani and Hungarian). During the German occupation of Poland in World War II, Ficowski who lived in W¿ochy near Warsaw was a member of the Polish resistance. He was a member of the Home Army (Armia Krajowa, AK), was imprisoned in the infamous Pawiak and took part in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. His codename was Wrak and he fought in Mokotów region. Following the Warsaw Uprising, Ficowski entered a camp with other survivors of the battle. After the war, Ficowski returned to Warsaw and enrolled at the university in order to study philosophy and sociology. There he published his first volume of poetry, O¿owiani ¿o¿nierze (The Tin Soldiers, 1948). This volume reflected the Stalinist atmosphere of the early postwar Poland, in which heroes of the Armia Krajowa Warsaw Uprising were treated with suspicion at best, arrested and executed at worst, together with the sense of a new city arising from the ashes of the old. His early works show the influence of Julian Tuwim. Later he became interested in the poems of the interwar period, with elements of fantasy and grotesque. In the later period his poems reflected various moral and social aspects of life in the People's Republic of Poland. From 1948 to 1950 Ficowski chose to travel with Polish Gypsies and came to write several volumes on or inspired by the Roma way of life, including Amulety i defilacje (Amulets and Definitions, 1960) and Cyganie na polskich drogach (Gypsies on the Polish Roads, 1965). He was the member of the Gypsy Lore Society and translated the poems of Bronis¿awa Wajs (Papusza). He was interested in many aspects of international poetry. He translated the poems of the Spanish poet, Federico García Lorca, and he was also a known specialist of Jewish folklore and Modern Hebrew poetry, becoming an editor of the Jewish poem anthology Rodzynki z migda¿ami (Raisins with Almonds, 1964). Ficowski devoted many years of his life to the study of the life and works of Bruno Schulz, and in 1967 published the first edition of what is considered the definitive biography of him, entitled Regions of the Great Heresy. He received the award of the Polish Pen Club in 1977. His 1979 collection of poems, A Reading of Ashes, has been called the most moving account of the Holocaust written by a non-Jew. As a consequence of his signing, in 1975, of the letter of 59, practically all of Ficowski's writings had become banned in Poland for the remainder of the decade, and only the emergence of Solidarity in the early 1980s has brought his works back to Poland's bookshelves. Both his prose and poems continued to be widely translated in the West. He was active in the opposition movement, and was a member of the Workers' Defence Committee (Komitet Obrony Robotników, KOR) and subsequently of the Committee for Social Self-defence KOR. Under the communist regime he had urged his fellow writers to voice their concerns over censorship and the suppression of workers. His most public statement was a letter to the Writers Union in which he said, "I do not believe deeply in the immediate effectiveness of letters to the government, but even less do I believe in the effectiveness of silence." Following the fall of communism, liberalisation of Poland and its breaking with the Soviet bloc, Ficowski continued to write and translate works from languages as diverse as Spanish and Romanian, not to mention the Yiddish and Roma languages that had always fascinated him.
