        Nobody Lives Forever

London: Jonathan Cape, 1986. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by John Gardner on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Future Bond author Raymond Benson said "This is far and away John Gardner's best James Bond novel, and it is precisely because it is such a personal plot for the leading character. It's a plot reminiscent of From Russia, With Love, and it moves along excitingly! The chase idea was splendid indeed, and the reader is chased along with Bond throughout the book." Benson praised the story's "many surprising turns" and believed that if it were a film it would "have much of the same tension that something like Hitchcock's North by Northwest had."

LATER CHINESE PAINTING AND CALLIGRAPHY: 1800-1950, 3 VOLUMES

1986 - ELLSWORTH, Robert Hatfield. LATER CHINESE PAINTING AND CALLIGRAPHY: 1800- 1950, 3 VOLUMES. New York, 1986. 10.5 x 15", 3 vols, xvi; xviii; xxiii, 399; 369; 281 pp., 875 color plates, 118 text-figures, text in English with Chinese captions, index, cloth, all edges gilt in gold, brown decorative clamshell style box with tipped in color plates. Condition Fine. The culmination of more than three decades of study and collecting, the three-volume Later Chinese Painting and Calligraphy: 1800-1950 is one of the most important, sumptuous publications of Asian Art. Taking a period that has been ignored and undervalued by scholars, curators, and collectors, Robert Ellsworth has produced a work that not only forces us to re-examine all previous assessments of that tumultuous era in Chinese art, but promises to launch a new wave of interest in, and appreciation for, its unique achievements. Through more than 850 superb examples from his own collection, the author shows how exposure to Western art led, in painting, to an extraordinary new diversity and vitality, and how archeological discoveries in China fueled a dazzling renaissance in calligraphy. Two of the three volumes reproduce 550 paintings and 325 calligraphies, representing the work of every major artist of the period in full color. The extensive commentaries in the third volume include biographies of each artist. Every calligraphy, inscription, and seal is transliterated into precise English. The breadth and depth of fresh scholarship, the quality of the art, and the luxurious production combine to make Later Chinese Painting and Calligraphy: 1800-1950 one of the monumental achievements in art book publishing in our century: an essential source book for anyone interested in Asian art, and an object of permanent beauty and value. **Due to size and weight, the shipping cost is $30.00 (USA addresses) or $95.00 (non-USA addresses).

LETTER, COVER AND INSCRIPTIONS ON PHOTOS HANDWRITTEN BY LEONARD BERNSTEIN Leonard Bernstein (/ˈbɜrnstaɪn August 25, 1918 - October 14, 1990) was an American composer, conductor, author, music lecturer, and pianist. He was among the first conductors born and educated in the United States of America to receive worldwide acclaim. According to Donal Henahan, he was "one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history."[2] His fame derived from his long tenure as the music director of the New York Philharmonic, from his conducting of concerts with most of the world's leading orchestras, and from his music for West Side Story, Peter Pan,[3] Candide, Wonderful Town, On the Town and his own Mass. Bernstein was the first conductor to give numerous television lectures on classical music, starting in 1954 and continuing until his death. He was a skilled pianist,[4] often conducting piano concertos from the keyboard. As a composer he wrote in many styles encompassing symphonic and orchestral music, ballet, film and theatre music, choral works, opera, chamber music and pieces for the piano. Many of his works are regularly performed around the world, although none has matched the tremendous popular and commercial success of West Side Story. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century Peter (Emmanuel) Gradenwitz (* 24. Januar 1910 in Berlin; † 27. Lore of Gold.

Avoca, Nebraska:: Blue Heron Press,, 1986-1987.. Edition of 20. 6 x 9", 12 leaves, multi-color with sewn binding and blue hemp covers. Woodcut and letterpress on Okawara paper. Text in typeface of Garamont. A pairing of early texts with Kunc's contemporary art. The text is taken from three sources: The Stone of the Philosophers, an undated 17th-century work by George Starkey; the Golden Tractate of Hermes Trismegistus (fourth or fifth century); and, Of the Nature of Things by Paracelsus (Theophrastus von Hohenheim) from 1650. All three concern the process of making gold. "Now you shall understand that the Ancient Philosophers made division of the Water to separate it into four substances; one to two and three to one; the one third part of which is colour; which is a coagulating moisture; but the other two thirds are the Weights of the Wise. “Take an ounce and a half of the humidity; and the midday Redness, the soul of gold, take a fourth part which is half an ounce. Of the citrine Seyre take similarly half an ounce. Of the Auripigment take half (which are eight) thus making a total of three ounces; and you must know that the Vine of the Wise is drawn forth in three, and the Wine of it is perfected in Thirty...." Karen Kunc: "Text and full page woodcut illustrations alternate to create a vision and mystery surrounding the art of creation. Nature is animate within the medieval understanding and this contemporary imagery."

Jorge Francisco Isidoro Luis Borges, KBE (Spanish: [ˈxorxe ˈlwis ˈβorxes]  audio (help·info); 24 August 1899 - 14 June 1986) was an Argentine short-story writer, essayist, poet and translator born in Buenos Aires. His work embraces the "character of unreality in all literature".[1] His best-known books, Ficciones (Fictions) and The Aleph (El Aleph), published in the 1940s, are compilations of short stories interconnected by common themes, including dreams, labyrinths, libraries, mirrors, fictional writers, philosophy, and religion. Borges's works have contributed to philosophical literature and also to the fantasy genre. Critic Ángel Flores, the first to use the term magical realism to define a genre that reacted against the dominant realism and naturalism of the 19th century,[2] considers the beginning of the movement to be the release of Borges's A Universal History of Infamy (Historia universal de la infamia).[2][3] However, some critics would consider Borges to be a predecessor and not actually a magical realist. His late poems dialogue with such cultural figures as Spinoza, Camões, and Virgil. In 1914 his family moved to Switzerland, where he studied at the Collège de Genève. The family travelled widely in Europe, including stays in Spain. On his return to Argentina in 1921, Borges began publishing his poems and essays in surrealist literary journals. He also worked as a librarian and public lecturer. In 1955 he was appointed director of the National Public Library and professor of Literature at the University of Buenos Aires. He became completely blind at the age of 55; as he never learned braille, he became unable to read. Scholars have suggested that his progressive blindness helped him to create innovative literary symbols through imagination.[4] In 1961 he came to international attention when he received the first Prix International, which he shared with Samuel Beckett. In 1971 he won the Jerusalem Prize. His work was translated and published widely in the United States and in Europe. Borges himself was fluent in several languages. He dedicated his final work, The Conspirators, to the city of Geneva, Switzerland.[5] His international reputation was consolidated in the 1960s, aided by his works being available in English, by the Latin American Boom and by the success of García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude.[6] Writer and essayist J. M. Coetzee said of him: "He, more than anyone, renovated the language of fiction and thus opened the way to a remarkable generation of Spanish American novelists."[

Konzert für Klavier und Orchester. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. (1985-88). Faksimile-Partitur/Facsimile-Score. ED 7746

Schott, Mainz, London, New York, Paris, Tokyo 1986 - First edition. Limited, one of 100 numbered and signed copies, of the 700 total edition. In publisher's hard paper wrappers. (156) p. One of the one hundred signed copies of the facsimile edition of Ligeti's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. György Ligeti's Piano Concerto, whose Movements I-III were completed in 1986, and IV-V in 1988. Scored for a reduced orchestra with unusual instruments such as harmonica, slide whistles, and an ocarina. Ligeti considered as his most complex and technically demanding score. The first three movements were premiered in Graz in 1986, the entire work was first played in Vienna in 1988, both times conducted by Maria di Bonaventure, whom the piece is dedicated. György Ligeti (1923-2006) was a Hungarian (Transylvanian) born composer. Studied at the Music Academy of Cluj and Budapest. After his graduation, he started to collect folk music in Romania and taught composing and counterpointing at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He left Hungary after the revolution in 1956 and started to work at the radio station in Cologne where he made acquaintance with Karlheinz Stockhausen who had a major influence on his art. In 1959 settled down in Vienna and became a citizen in 1967. Taught at the Universities of Darmstadt, Stockholm, Stanford and Hamburg. Under the influence of Stockhausen, he started to compose music for electronic instruments (eg. Artikulation and Atmosphères), thus earned a reputation in the Western European music scene. After these works he gave up composing electronic music but his experiences with such instruments made and effect on his later compositions. His music could be characterised as a mixture of Western avant-garde music and Hungarian folk music combined with sense of humour and absurd. Lower right corner slightly bumped, otherwise in fine condition. In publisher's hard paper wrappers First edition. Limited, one of 100 numbered and signed copies, of the 700 total edition. Appropriating art history, as can be seen in this album, was a means for Cavellini not to deconstruct traditions, but to insert himself into them.
