A catalogue Raisonné of the Unsigned Limited Edition Works of Sir William Russell Flint together with a Review of Fine Books and Other Collectable Ephemera

London & Bristol: Sir William Russell Flint Galleries Ltd. & Michael Stewart Associates,, 1986 & 1994. With contributions by Cecilia Green and Moira Shearer. 2 vols. Quarto. Original blue half morocco with blue boards and original full blue morocco, titles to front covers and spines gilt. With the publisher's slipcases. Fine in fine slipcases. Cecilia Green's copies, with her name written on the Russell Flint bookplate pasted to the front free endpaper of the first volume and the inscription "This book belongs to Cecilia Green" on the limitation page of the second volume. Cecilia has tabbed a number of pages where she sat as the model. Cecilia Green, was the favourite model of Sir William Russell Flint, appearing in many of his paintings in roles which varied from Spanish gypsy to cloistered nun. Her nude poses - more aesthetic than erotic - were, and remain, famous. Their association lasted for some 15 years, but she was much more than his model and his inspiration. Flint's wife was confined to a nursing home with arthritis, and Cecilia took over many additional duties, such as dealing with agents and acting as hostess.

Boston, MA: Little, Brown & Company, 1986. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. Boston, MA: Little, Brown & Company, 1986. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 160 pages. Artist Book. One of the greatest art photography books of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. A brilliant production by Vera Lehndorff and Holger Trulzsch: Oversize-volume format. Cloth boards with black titles embossed on spine, as issued. Art by Veruschka/Vera Lehndorff. Photographs by Holger Trulzsch. Essay by Susan Sontag. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Japan to the very highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents the single most brilliant realization of the body as artistic medium. One of the most valuable contributions of Modernist art/philosophy is its emphasis on the body (it is important to be reminded that for two thousand years, philosophy regarded the body as marginal and contingent rather than central and essential to who we are). Veruschka was the very first supermodel. As the one personality who is inseparable from our appreciation of her body, Veruschka (whose real name is Vera Lehndorff) examines her body in relation to beauty, through transfigurations, the single most interesting idea of Modernist art. She wants us to see that there is a major difference between "transform" and "transfigure": The latter goes much deeper, is more radical, and is ultimately about transcendence. Ravishingly beautiful when she produced this great book, Veruschka uses her body to create sublime, one-of-a-kind works of art. In each of them, she is completely changed, often beyond recognition. She becomes the cinematic beauties Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth. In other Ovidian images, she denies her humanity altogether and becomes an animal, a statue, a stone. The most haunting transfigurations of all are the Series called "Oxydation", in which her body appears to disintegrate before our eyes. "Not merely beautiful but 'about' the beautiful, as it is very much concerned with the testing of beauty, through artifice, through distortion, and through transfiguration" (Susan Sontag). A "must-have" title for art and photography collectors. This presentation copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and inscribed in black pen on the front free endpaper by the author: "To Michael, Veruschka". Veruschka signed most copies with her real name. This is the very first (and much-sought-after) copy we have finally found where she signed with her iconic name, and her signature is magnificent. This title is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A very rare signed copy thus. 163 plates. One of the most brilliant artists of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER COPY OF THIS TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). The Flood

Edinburgh, Polygon, 1986., 1986. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. Pp188. Soft cover issue, published simultaneously with the hardback. Minor wear, read once. Signed by the Author, with his hangman's gallows motif below. This copy belonged to 'Apple' Jon Curt, flat-mate and fellow student of English at Edinburgh University, who graduated with first class honours but then abandoned his doctoral thesis after a year. By way of compensation Rankin made him 'Dr. Curt', forensic pathologist of the Rebus novels. Truly scarce- whilst technically more common than the hardback (around 750 copies compared with 300), our experience shows this as the more elusive of the two (no others available at time of writing). This may be down to the fact that paperbacks are read and lost/discarded more often than hardbacks.

Offered here is a double page watercolor used in Conover's Froggie Went A-Courting published by Ferrar Strauss Giroux in 1986. It is the story of a handsome humanized, seafaring frog's wooing of Miss Mousie. An entire world of humanized creatures is created around this traditional song with text retold by Conover. Reviewed by School Library Journal as a 'tour de force.'. This illustration measures 15 1/2" wide x 9 1/2", signed. The scene shows all of the wedding party in the water after being chased by Tom Cat. Froggie has saved the day by capturing the cat in a net. Its a fabulous image that you'd never get tired of looking at. [a] Conover has been illustrating children's books since 1974. Her work is noted for rich colors and incredible attention to detail, some of which is executed using a magnifying glass for accuracy. There is plenty to look at but without the overcrowding that hampers so many modern children's books.

Paris, France: Centre Nationale De La Photographie, 1986. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Paris, France: Centre Nationale De La Photographie, 1986. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 1 pages. Rare Irving Penn collectible item. A framed pristine vintage poster of the "Irving Penn" museum exhibition poster, which utilizes one of his greatest portraits. The poster is huge at 26 X 34 inches and weighs 40 pounds. Printed in gravure on thick cream uncoated stock paper in Paris, France to the very highest standards. The breathtakingly beautiful printing quality must be seen to be believed: The nuances and "chiaroscuro" details (particularly of the grimy floor, often lost in reproduction) of the original photograph are captured by the blown-up poster as faithfully as a printing process possibly can. Published on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition held at the Centre Nationale de la Photographie Paris in 1986. Presents in poster format Irving Penn's "Indian Children, Cuzco, Peru, 1948", one of the greatest photographs of the 20th century. The heartbreakingly beautiful yet formally rigorous portrait of two shabbily dressed American-Indian children shyly posing for the camera, their hands resting on an ornate European colonial-period table, is classic Irving Penn. A testament to his greatness and humane-ness as a photographer, it is everything the 20th century is about in one simple yet stunning image: Colonialism and culture, The Old and The New, Rich and Poor, North and South, East and West. "If Richard Avedon was a snapshot Delacroix, all fire and figures, Penn was Ingres with a Leica, all ravishing edges and perfect composition and a quality of deep color that was the envy of every other photographer" (Adam Gopnik). Irving Penn died on October 7, 2009 at the age of 92, his place in photographic history permanent and secure. Not just a memorabilia but a genuine collectible, this is a "must-have" item for Irving Penn collectors. This item is very highly collectible. After all these years, this is the only copy we have ever found, is available online, and despite being more than 25 years old, has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. If ever they turn up, vintage prints of the image easily command $500, 000 at gallery and auction sales. The superior quality of this vintage gravure poster must be seen to be believed; it is eminently collectible in its own right. A very rare copy thus. 1 gravure plate. Irving Penn's "Moments Preserved" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A flawless collectible copy. An archive of correspondence from the author regarding his writing process, and regarding the publication of the 1987 collection, "The Annex and Other Stories

N.p.: N.p., 1986. A curated collection of 9 typed letters signed written by John D. MacDonald to various serious inquiries from readers all over the world regarding his fiction, as well as some correspondence with the Finnish publisher Eurographica (who published "The Annex and Other Stories in 1987), all dating between 1953 and 1986. Quite strong in content, the letters show a thoughtful side of a writer who was generally very quiet about his process.& & Among the topics addressed in the letters are: the novels with which he was the most pleased ("The End of the Night," "Slam the Big Door," "Please Write for Details," "A Key to the Suite," and "The Last One Left"), the number of his books he believes to have sold as of April 1986 (90,000,000), a philosophical discussion about appraisals of an author's enduring merit ("a delusion"), a fascinating and detailed discussion of his process for conceiving a new novel ("I have thrown away beginnings which were stronger than the one eventually used"), a detailed response to a request from a Finnish publisher about which stories to put in an anthology, and an explanation regarding the location of his archives and "professional materials."& & One sentence from a 1986 letter would appear to sum up the author's attitude about his craft the best: "I really like writing...were my books unsalable I would do them anyway, and then bury them in the back yard."& & Letters are all Near Fine, some on MacDonald's stationery, some with his typed address at the top left, all dated.
