An archive of correspondence from the author

N.p.: N.p., 1986. A collection of 4 autograph letters signed by Kenneth Millar (a.k.a. Ross Macdonald), quite strong in content, addressing a wide range of topics. Also included is a very humorous response to a "Celebrity Questionnaire." Ranging from 1955, the letters typically detailed, lengthy, and thoughtful. Among the topics addressed in the letters are: an effusive recommendation for fellow author Dennis Lynds (a.k.a. Michael Collins) for a Guggenheim fellowship, the deal for the 1973 film version of "The Drowning Pool" ("judged by the principals involved, it looks very promising"), his reading (a long discussion of "The Mystery of Edwin Drood," "Tristram Shandy"), reactions to jacket artwork ("'The Goodbye Look' seems to me an improvement over that for 'The Instant Enemy'"), his excitement over seeing praise from Elizabeth Bowen, Charles Portis, and even English poet Donald Davie (who called "The Galton Case" "a great novel"), a review of his work by Ray Bradbury in the Los Angeles Times, a hilarious Celebrity Yearbook Questionnaire ("Favorite Expression: 'Do not become alarmed' / Greatest Hero: Freud"). The cornerstone of the collection is a lengthy rumination by Millar on his own standing in the pantheon of crime fiction writers. He is rueful of the fact that the Collins Crime Club editions of his novels in England put across a more "traditional" crime fiction style that leads reviewers to comparisons with Hammett and Chandler. He puts forth the idea (one that is now very much accepted by historians) that his fiction is what American critic Samuel French Morse calls "almost...a new genre." He writes: "This view of me is making great headway in this country at last," and suggests that his British publisher consider publishing "an omnibus of three or four of my best books, suitably introduced, [which might] convey a new message." Letters are all Near Fine, some on Macdonald's stationery, some with his typed address at the top left, all dated.

Width: 9" Height: 11.25" a crisp fine copy in slipcase [mint]. "#228 of 1000 copies, signed by both Flanagan and Ballagh on the colophon page. 6 photogravures . Dubliners" is a collection of 15 short stories by James Joyce, first published in 1914. They were meant to be a naturalistic depiction of Irish middle class life in and around Dublin in the early years of the 20th century. The stories were written when Irish nationalism was at its peak, and a search for a national identity and purpose was raging; at a crossroads of history and culture, Ireland was jolted by various converging ideas and influences. They centre on Joyce's idea of an epiphany: a moment where a character experiences self-understanding or illumination. Many of the characters in "Dubliners" later appear in minor roles in Joyce's novel "Ulysses." The initial stories in the collection are narrated by child protagonists, and as the stories continue, they deal with the lives and concerns of progressively older people. This is in line with Joyce's tripartite division of the collection into childhood, adolescence, and maturity. Condition / Notes: This is a scarce limited edition of this collection of stories by Irish writer James Joyce, signed in ink by Thomas Flanagan and pencil signed by illustrator Robert Ballagh on the colophon page. This is number 228 of 1000. This volume is bound in quarter green leather and Irish hankerchief linen, with bright gilt lettering to spine. Volume is in excellent condition. This book contains an introduction by Thomas Flanagan and 6 photogravures by Robert Ballagh printed on handmade paper. This edition was printed at Wild Carrot Letterpress and Heritage Printers. The text has been set in Monotype Scotch by Dan Carr and Julia Ferrarie at Golgonooza Letter Foundry. The design is by Benjamin Shiff. The photogravure plates were made by Jon Goodman, and editioned by Bruce Chandler, Peter Pettengill, Catherine Mosley and Greta Lintvedt. The paper was made at Cartiere Enrico Magnani. Suede-lined linen slipcase shows light shelfwear. Case measures approximately 9.5" x 11.75". Author: James Joyce - James Augustine Aloysius Joyce was an Irish novelist and poet, considered to be one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century. Joyce is best known for "Ulysses" (1922) , a landmark work in which the episodes of Homer's Odyssey are paralleled in an array of contrasting literary styles, perhaps most prominently the stream of consciousness technique he perfected. Other major works are the short-story collection "Dubliners" (1914) , and the novels "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" (1916) and "Finnegans Wake" (1939). His complete oeuvre includes three books of poetry, a play, occasional journalism, and his published letters. Joyce was born to a middle class family in Dublin, where he excelled as a student at the Jesuit schools Clongowes and Belvedere, then at University College Dublin. In his early twenties he emigrated permanently to continental Europe, living in Trieste, Paris and Zurich. Though most of his adult life was spent abroad, Joyce's fictional universe does not extend beyond Dublin, and is populated largely by characters who closely resemble family members, enemies and friends from his time there; "Ulysses" in particular is set with precision in the streets and alleyways of the city. Shortly after the publication of "Ulysses" he elucidated this preoccupation somewhat, saying, "For myself, I always write about Dublin, because if I can get to the heart of Dublin I can get to the heart of all the cities of the world. In the particular is contained the universal." Laid in letter. All laid in tissues protectors present. ; 0 .

Sur l'homme et le developpement de ses facultes ou Essai de physique socialeParis: Bachelier, 1835.

First edition, and a fine copy, of Quetelet's principal work in which he presented his conception of the homme moyen ("average man") as the central value about which measurements of a human trait are grouped according to the normal distribution (this was the first time the normal distribution had been used other than as an error law).

❧Stigler, The History of Statistics, 1986, Chapter 5.

"With Quetelet's work of 1835 a new era in statistics began. It presented a new technique of statistics, or, rather, the first technique at all. The material was thoughtfully elaborated, arranged according to certain pre-established principles, and made comparable. There were not very many statistical figures in the book, but each figure reported made sense. For every number, Quetelet tried to find the determining influences, its natural causes, and the perturbations caused by man. The work gave a description of the average man as both a static and dynamic phenomenon.

"This work was a tremendous achievement, but Quetelet had aimed at a much higher goal: social physics, as the subtitle of the work said; the same title under which, since 1825, Comte had taught what he later called sociology. Terms and analogies borrowed from mechanics played a great part in Quetelet's theoretical explanation. To find the laws that govern the social body, one has to do what one does in physics: to observe a large number of cases and then take averages. Quetelet's average man became a slogan in nineteenth-century discussions on social science" (DSB).

"Quetelet made two important advances toward the statistical analysis of social data: the first of these was formulating the concept of the average man, the second the fitting of distributions. Quetelet's first awakening to the variety of relationships latent in society may have come with his investigation of population data, but his interests soon spread. From 1827 to 1835 he examined scores of potentially meaningful relationships through the compilation of tables and the preparation of graphical displays... He examined birth and death rates by month and city, by temperature, and by time of day. He calculated the month of conception from the birth month and tried to relate it to marriage statistics. He investigated mortality by age, by profession, by locality, by season, in prisons, and in hospitals. He considered other human attributes: height, weight, growth rate, and strength. Quetelet's interests also extended to moral qualities: statistics on drunkenness, insanity, suicides, and crime. In 1835 he collected a number of earlier memoirs and added to them to form the two-volume book that was to gain him an international reputation as a social scientist: Sur l'homme et le developpement de ses facultes ou Essai de physique sociale. It was translated into English in 1842 as A Treatise on Man and the Development of his Faculties.

"There was no mistaking Quetelet's aim in this book: to lay the ground-work for social physics, to conduct a rigorous, quantified investigation of the laws of society that might some day stand with astronomers' achievements of the previous century. His beginning was only tentative, and he was careful (sometimes to the point of being apologetic) not to claim more success than he could defend; but he was eloquent and his zeal caught the public eye. A rare, three-part review in the Athenaeum concluded by remarking: 'We consider the appearance of these volumes as forming an epoch in the literary history of civilization'." (Stigler, pp. 169-70).

"From 1819 Quetelet lectured at the Brussels Athenaeum, military college, and museum. In 1823 he went to Paris to study astronomy, meteorology, and the management of an astronomical observatory. While there he learned probability from Joseph Fourier and, conceivably, from Pierre-Simon Laplace. Quetelet founded (1828) and directed the Royal Observatory in Brussels, served as perpetual secretary of the Belgian Royal Academy (1834-74), and organized the first International Statistical Congress (1853). For the Dutch and Belgian governments, he collected and analyzed statistics on crime, mortality, and other subjects and devised improvements in census taking. He also developed methods for simultaneous observations of astronomical, meteorological, and geodetic phenomena from scattered points throughout Europe" (Britannica).

Kress C.4017; DSB XI: 236-8; S. M. Stigler, The History of Statistics, 1986, Chapter 5.. Two vols., 8vo (210 x 127 mm), pp. [iv], xii, 327, [1], with two folding plates; [iv], viii, 327, [1] , with four folding plates (four plates engraved, the other 2 lithographed). Twenty-Five Books From a 1986 Exhibition at the Rhode Island School of Design (Some Signed or Inscribed)

Various: Edition Hansjorg Mayer and Others, Various. First edition. Paperback. Very Good. On May 5, 1986 an exhibition was held in Providence at the Rhode Island School of Design simply entitled Dieter Roth at The Rhode Island School of Design. Dieter had been a teacher at RISD back in 1965-66 and retained many connections with the school and its faculty. The collection offered here comes from one of the former faculty members who was a close friend of Dieter and who was given these books after the exhibition was completed. Each book has a characteristic drill hole through the entire binding near the top left hand corner of each volume. It was Dieter's practice, well-acknowledged, to hang his artist books from chains that passed through the book drillhole and were suspended from the ceiling ( See Dobke, Dieter Roth Books + Multiples, Catalogue Raisonne, pp 126 as a typical example.) We have two original annotated black and white photographs which will be included with the sale of these items. The photos were taken by the giftee at the event in 1986 and help document the provenance of this collection. The books are offered as a collection with a few exceptions which will be noted below. It is a testament to how well constructed these books are that they have survived so well the drilling process. Each volume can stand alone as a very good, complete example of each work. The process of hanging these items gives true meaning to the idea of books as art. We consider these copies to be more than just the sum of their parts, but represent multiples of Dieter's voracious output of art and artist books. While it is not known exactly how many books were hung for this exhibition, it is probable that this collection represents a substantial portion of that part of the exhibition. As such, the collection will allow the purchaser to effectively recreate a distinct and substantial portion of an entire Dieter Roth art exhibit. All of the books offered are first editions. Children of Light [Inscribed Association Copy]

NY: Knopf. 1986. The uncorrected proof copy of the first American edition of his fourth novel. This is Stone's Hollywood novel -- an eerie tale of an actor/screenwriter and a psychotic, drug-dependent actress, with echoes of both King Lear and Kate Chopin's The Awakening, both of which are also among the plot elements. A harsh look at the underside of Hollywood's glamour, written after Stone had had two less-than-satisfying experiences with the Hollywood adaptations of his first two books, A Hall of Mirrors and Dog Soldiers, filmed respectively as WUSA and Who'll Stop the Rain? Inscribed by Stone to another National Book Award-winning writer and his wife: "For ___ & ___ with admiration and respect -- my deepest esteem/ Robert Stone." Some dustiness and rubbing to covers, with a bit of spine-fading; very good in wrappers, in custom folding chemise and slipcase. A very nice association copy. . First Edition. Softcover.
