Highlands, NC: The Jargon Society, 1986. First Edition. Paperback. Fine. Large 8vo. Spiral bound. Fine condition. INSCRIBED by Mickler in year of publication ("To Dean / Ernest Matthew Mickler / 3.7.86." Additionally SIGNED publisher Jonathan Williams. Laid in is a two-page obituary for Mickler by Williams signed by him ("JW for SDW"). Top-stapled and folded once, else fine. One of the more unusual titles in Jargon's run and it's only best-seller. Issued as Jargon 101. [Jaffe B52]. With an introduction by the publisher and inscribed to his life-long friend, Stanley Dean Willis. Willis attended St. Albans High School with Williams and was his best friend there. The obituary here included was eventually published in Williams' book BLACKBIRD DUST. A cookbook often seen as satirical, it is in fact a geniunely appreciative work of culinary americana. A warm and intimate association for one of Jargon's best-known titles.

Yokohama, Japan: Sokyu-Sha Kanagawa-Ken, 1986. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. Yokohama, Japan: Sokyu-Sha Kanagawa-Ken, 1986. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 132 pages. Artist Book. One of the greatest art photography books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the 1998 American Edition (entitled "Solitude of Ravens") and the 2008 Japanese Reissued Edition. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now very rare. An austerely elegant production by Michitaka Ota and Kazuyuki Goto: Oversize-volume format. Black raw silk cloth boards with recessed impression of the very first raven image on both the cover and back with titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Masahisa Fukase. Afterword by Akira Hasegawa in the Japanese original and felicitous English translation. Brown hard board slipcase with black titles printed on white stock paper. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by Toppan Printing Company Tokyo to absolutely the highest standards. In publisher's original plastic wrappers. In translucent glassine DJ, as issued. The latter is found either in damaged condition or missing altogether in most extant copies of the book. Presents, in a perfect Artist Book rendition, Masahisa Fukase's "Karasu". Some of the most lyrically beautiful images that exist in photography (or any other medium), they were taken as a form of self-therapy by Fukase, a devastated man turning to art's healing power. In the wake of his marriage's collapse, the suicidal Fukase chanced upon a picture of a flock of ravens. It captured in one vivid image his depressive state and crystallized his otherwise unbearable feelings about loneliness, suicide, and death. Fukase began to photograph ravens in snow and at night in Hokkaido. The sequence renders their black silhouettes like brushstrokes in classic Japanese "sumi-e" calligraphy. The project was to occupy Fukase for a full decade (1975-1985). His achievement has never been surpassed, not even by the artist/photographer himself (who was by then paralyzed but lived for another twenty-seven years, dying on June 9, 2012) : "Karasu" exemplifies Japanese aesthetics and her artistic tradition, the greatest in Asia, in all its delicacy, nuance, and power. An absolute "must-have" title for Masahisa Fukase collectors. This title is a modern art photography classic. This is one of very few copies of First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online, is still in the publisher's original plastic wrappers, and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. When they do turn up, copies usually have flaws, particularly the delicate glassine DJ, which is either creased, worn, and torn or missing altogether. This is it: The ultimate auction house, museum, and private collector's copy. A very rare copy thus. 62 plates. Selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook", "Karasu" was also chosen as the greatest photography book of the last 25 years by The British Journal of Photography panel of photographers, artists, and writer/critics in 2010. One of the greatest artist/photographers of the 20th century. A flawless collectible copy. .

The designs are reproduced in black (with a few white highlights) or light beige-greens. One plate is printed in white on the gray stock. The plates and the color lithograph are based on the extraordinary mural designs created by the great Scottish sculptor and artist for London's Tottenham Court Road Underground station. The London Underground stated that they would take care to protect the mosaics -"…some sections of existing mosaic tiles will have to be carefully removed and reinstated once the tunnelling work is finished. Where small sections do have to be permanently removed from their current location, they will be preserved with the aim of being used elsewhere on the station in the future.". Signed By Artist. Cecilia Green, was the favourite model of Sir William Russell Flint, appearing in many of his paintings in roles which varied from Spanish gypsy to cloistered nun. Her nude poses - more aesthetic than erotic - were, and remain, famous. Their association lasted for some 15 years, but she was much more than his model and his inspiration. Flint's wife was confined to a nursing home with arthritis, and Cecilia took over many additional duties, such as dealing with agents and acting as hostess.

Boston, MA: Little, Brown & Company, 1986. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. Boston, MA: Little, Brown & Company, 1986. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 160 pages. Artist Book. One of the greatest art photography books of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. A brilliant production by Vera Lehndorff and Holger Trulzsch: Oversize-volume format. Cloth boards with black titles embossed on spine, as issued. Art by Veruschka/Vera Lehndorff. Photographs by Holger Trulzsch. Essay by Susan Sontag. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Japan to the very highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents the single most brilliant realization of the body as artistic medium. One of the most valuable contributions of Modernist art/philosophy is its emphasis on the body (it is important to be reminded that for two thousand years, philosophy regarded the body as marginal and contingent rather than central and essential to who we are). Veruschka was the very first supermodel. As the one personality who is inseparable from our appreciation of her body, Veruschka (whose real name is Vera Lehndorff) examines her body in relation to beauty, through transfigurations, the single most interesting idea of Modernist art. She wants us to see that there is a major difference between "transform" and "transfigure": The latter goes much deeper, is more radical, and is ultimately about transcendence. Ravishingly beautiful when she produced this great book, Veruschka uses her body to create sublime, one-of-a-kind works of art. In each of them, she is completely changed, often beyond recognition. She becomes the cinematic beauties Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth. In other Ovidian images, she denies her humanity altogether and becomes an animal, a statue, a stone. The most haunting transfigurations of all are the Series called "Oxydation", in which her body appears to disintegrate before our eyes. "Not merely beautiful but 'about' the beautiful, as it is very much concerned with the testing of beauty, through artifice, through distortion, and through transfiguration" (Susan Sontag). A "must-have" title for art and photography collectors. This presentation copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and inscribed in black pen on the front free endpaper by the author: "To Michael, Veruschka". Veruschka signed most copies with her real name. This is the very first (and much-sought-after) copy we have finally found where she signed with her iconic name, and her signature is magnificent. This title is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A very rare signed copy thus. 163 plates. One of the most brilliant artists of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER COPY OF THIS TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). The Flood

Edinburgh, Polygon, 1986., 1986. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. Pp188. Soft cover issue, published simultaneously with the hardback. Minor wear, read once. Signed by the Author, with his hangman's gallows motif below. This copy belonged to 'Apple' Jon Curt, flat-mate and fellow student of English at Edinburgh University, who graduated with first class honours but then abandoned his doctoral thesis after a year. By way of compensation Rankin made him 'Dr. Curt', forensic pathologist of the Rebus novels. Truly scarce- whilst technically more common than the hardback (around 750 copies compared with 300), our experience shows this as the more elusive of the two (no others available at time of writing). This may be down to the fact that paperbacks are read and lost/discarded more often than hardbacks.

Offered here is a double page watercolor used in Conover's Froggie Went A-Courting published by Ferrar Strauss Giroux in 1986. It is the story of a handsome humanized, seafaring frog's wooing of Miss Mousie. An entire world of humanized creatures is created around this traditional song with text retold by Conover. Reviewed by School Library Journal as a 'tour de force.'. This illustration measures 15 1/2" wide x 9 1/2", signed. The scene shows all of the wedding party in the water after being chased by Tom Cat. Froggie has saved the day by capturing the cat in a net. Its a fabulous image that you'd never get tired of looking at. [a] Conover has been illustrating children's books since 1974. Her work is noted for rich colors and incredible attention to detail, some of which is executed using a magnifying glass for accuracy. There is plenty to look at but without the overcrowding that hampers so many modern children's books.
