        Quartet. Etchings by Joseph Goldyne

Berkeley, CA: Pacific Editions. 1986. One of 165 copies all on Twinrocker handmade rag paper, each signed by the author and artist. Page size: 12 inches x 8-1/4 inches. Bound by Klaus- Ullrich Rotzscher: gilt stamped morocco and Twinrocker paper in custom clamshell box. Four of the five etchings accompany each of the four essays by Thomas and a fifth, For Quartet, weaves visual metaphors of the themes of the four essays. The etchings incorporate a variety of graphic techniques, including aquatint, spitbite, drypoint, and hard and soft ground methods. They were proofed by Kay Bradner at Katherine Lincoln Press and the edition was printed by Robert Townsend and Kate Hanlon. The text is handset in 16 point Bembo and Centaur and printed letterpress at the Arif Press by Wesley B. Tanner who also designed the book. Title calligraphy is by John Prestianni. This is a real collaborative effort among artists and the result encompasses Thomas&#39; central themes: the dominant role of symbiosis in life on our planet; guarded optimism in the face of great odds; the magical role of music and metaphor; and the idiosyncrasies of language and communication. The late Lewis Thomas, National Book Award winner, had a long and distinguished career as a scientist before combining that career with that of writing. Joseph Goldyne, trained as a physician before embarking on a career in art. His work is widely collected and critically acclaimed. <br>See an <A HREF= http://www.bookrouter.com/im/juvelisbks/8966.jpg >Image.</A><br>

        Der Schlottbeisser. Radierung.

1986 1986 - 76 x 64 cm, 54 x 41 cm, Minimal angeschmutzt, kleine Knitterspuren sonst tadell. Vom Künstler handschriftlich betitelt und unten rechts signiert. A. Paul Weber (1893-1980), deutscher Lithograf, Zeichner und Maler. 1100 gr. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

La Danse Des Infideles: Bud Powell

L'Instant, Paris 1986 - L'Instant, Paris, 1986, First Edition. In the original French, large folio in white boards, title blind stamped to top cover, touch of shelf wear to bottom edges, fore corners gently bumped, spine ends slightly creased and compressed, else, near fine, crisp, unmarked; in a very good++ dust jacket, unclipped, short closed tears to rear panel edges, light wear to extremities and spot of rubbing at the lower front panel flap fold, now in mylar sleeve. Paudras' memoir/biography of Powell is aesthetically a worthy successor to his definitive graphic study of Charlie Parker, To Bird With Love, published in 1981. Handsomely designed, lavishly illustrated with vintage b&w photographs and ephemera, the author draws heavily on his close personal relationship with the great pianist, to whom he was extraordinarily devoted, and for whom he acted as de facto guardian and unofficial manager during Powell's troubled stay in Paris during the late 50's, and early 60's. The award winning French film, Round Midnight, also released in 1986, directed by Bernard Tavernier and starring Dexter Gordon, presented a thinly disguised fictional account of a doomed expatriate jazz musician in Paris in the 50's. A composite portrait based loosely on the lives of Powell and the great tenor saxophonist Lester Young, the film borrowed substantially from Paudras' book and featured a young 'guardian' figure named "Francis". Lovely book, increasingly uncommon. J1658 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

O RIO DE JANEIRO: A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNAL BY BRUCE WEBER

(WEBER, BRUCE). Weber, Bruce. O RIO DE JANEIRO: A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNAL BY BRUCE WEBER. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., 1986. First Edition. Folio. Pictorial Wrappers. Photography Monograph. Very Good. np, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Text in English and Portuguese. Drawings by Richard Giglio. Designed by Sam Shahid, Rise Daniels and Donald Sterzin. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. Bruce Weber&#39;s second book - an outrageously lavish paperback that was published at the then unheard of price of $60.00! - is a joyous celebration of the cultural diversity of Brazil. Filled with tanned, elegant bodies on the beach, and in hotels and nightclubs, "O Rio de Janeiro" portrays the city&#39;s youthful hedonism in a way that had not been captured before, or since. One of the most notable aspects of this book is the many portraits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu legend Rickson Gracie, and his fifteen member family at work and at play. A handsome copy of this most desirable early Bruce Weber title (cited on pages 254-57 of "The Book of 101 Books") showing some light wear and rubbing to the covers and edges of the textblock. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. 0-394-55938-X Inventory Number: 023376&
