VERUSCHKA: TRANS-FIGURATIONS ("VERUSCHKA: TRANSFIGURATIONS") - Rare Fine Copy of The First American Edition/First Printing Signed By The Artist As Veruschka - ONLY SIGNED COPY ONLINE

Boston, MA: Little, Brown & Company, 1986 - 1st Printing. Signed. 160 pages. Published in 1986. Artist Book. One of the greatest art photography books of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. A brilliant production by Vera Lehndorff and Holger Trulzsch: Oversize-volume format. Cloth boards with black titles embossed on spine, as issued. Art by Veruschka/Vera Lehndorff. Photographs by Holger Trulzsch. Essay by Susan Sontag. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Japan to the very highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents the single most brilliant realization of the body as artistic medium. One of the most valuable contributions of Modernist art/philosophy is its emphasis on the body (it is important to be reminded that for two thousand years, philosophy regarded the body as marginal and contingent rather than central and essential to who we are). Veruschka was the very first supermodel. As the one personality who is inseparable from our appreciation of her body, Veruschka (whose real name is Vera Lehndorff) examines her body in relation to beauty, through transfigurations, the single most interesting idea of Modernist art. She wants us to see that there is a major difference between "transform" and "transfigure": The latter goes much deeper, is more radical, and is ultimately about transcendence. Ravishingly beautiful when she produced this great book, Veruschka uses her body to create sublime, one-of-a-kind works of art. In each of them, she is completely changed, often beyond recognition. She becomes the cinematic beauties Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth. In other Ovidian images, she denies her humanity altogether and becomes an animal, a statue, a stone. The most haunting transfigurations of all are the Series called "Oxydation", in which her body appears to disintegrate before our eyes. "Not merely beautiful but 'about' the beautiful, as it is very much concerned with the testing of beauty, through artifice, through distortion, and through transfiguration" (Susan Sontag). An absolute "must-have" title for Veruschka, art, and photography collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and inscribed in black pen on the front free endpaper by the author: "To Michael, Veruschka". Veruschka signed most copies with her real name. This is the very first (and much-sought-after) copy we have finally found where she signed with her iconic name, and her signature is magnificent. This title is a great photography book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare, one-of-a-kind signed copy thus. 163 plates. One of the most brilliant artists of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER COPY OF THIS TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0821216376.         O Rio de Janeiro (Signed First Edition to Ralph Gibson)

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1986. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Soft cover. Fine. This is a signed and inscribed association copy of the first edition, first printing of the critically acclaimed photobook \"O Rio de Janeiro\" published by Alfred A. Knopf, New York, in 1986. Containing 144 spectacular color and duotone full-page gravures (four folding), the book is an intimate photo-essay that features images of sculpted fashionable young people and the sensual Rio de Janeiro scene. Bruce Weber has produced a formidable list of wonderful photobooks throughout the years but \"O Rio de Janeiro\" still remains his most popular and sought after book. Writing in \"The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century\" Vince Aletti states, \"O Rio is most successful as a carefully planned act of seduction.Weber has turned his trademark fiction of youthful exuberance and sexy camaraderie into a fast-paced montage intercut with landscapes, still lifes, news photos and family snapshots.\" Measuring approximately 11 x 14 inches, the book is bound in photographically illustrated flexible boards. The book and the covers are in FINE condition. The book is warmly inscribed, signed, and dated by Bruce Weber to Ralph Gibson and his wife on the title page. Ralph Gibson was the pioneering founder of Lustrum Press, whose collaborative approach revolutionized the photobook by offering photographers such as Larry Clark and Robert Frank \"a market for the kind of highly personal photography books that regular publishers usually fear to touch\" (New York Times). Cited in The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century by Andrew Roth.

Howl. Original Draft Facsimile, Transcript & Variant Versions, Fully Annotated by Author, With Contemporaneous Correspondence, Account of First Public Reading, Legal Skirmishes, Precursor Texts & Bibliography. Edited by Barry Miles

New York: Harper & Row. (1986). First. First edition. Edited by Barry Miles. Quarto. Tiny scuff on last leaf, else fine in about fine dustwrapper with a couple of tiny spots on the front panel. Nicely Inscribed by Ginsberg over two pages to fellow Beat poet Ray Bremser with a drawings of a flower and a snake: "For Ray Bremser - See you in Brooklyn Monday March 16, 1987 to teach my class and read your poetry. Allen Ginsberg. New York City 777-6786. February 3, 1987." As a teenager Bremser was imprisoned in reform school for armed robbery, where he began writing jazz-inspired Beat poetry, sending it to Ginsberg, Corso, and Le Roi Jones, who published them in "Yugen", and celebrated his release with a party in 1958. Despite their championship, he lived a rough life filled with excess, but never abandoned his poetry. In the process he shared an apartment with Elvin Jones, got high with John Coltrane, and inspired Bob Dylan (as per the liner notes of "Another Side of Bob Dylan"). After his death, his ashes were spread by other poets on Ginsberg's farm in Cherry Valley, New York. .
