An operator calculus having application in quantum electrodynamics" in Physical Review 84, 1, October 1, 1951, pp. 108-128

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF THE NOBEL PRIZE-WINNING PHYSICIST RICHARD FEYNMAN'S DESCRIPTION OF HIS TIME-ORDERED OPERATOR CALCULUS - A FUNCTIONAL CALCULUS FOR NON-COMMUTING OPERATORS. An important work with significant applications in quantum electrodynamics, the historian of science and physics S. S. Schweber has said of this paper that it "must surely be placed near the top of any list of the most seminal and influential papers in theoretical physics during the twentieth century" (Schweber, "Feynman and the visualization of space-time processes," Rev. Mod. Phys., 58, 1986, 502). In this paper, Feynman "considers an operator calculus for general systems of operators where the idea is to attach time indices to keep track of the order of operations in products. Operators with smaller time indices are to act before operators with larger time indices. With time indices attached, functions of the operators are formed just as if the operators were commuting" (Jefferies, Spectral Properties, 15). "Feynman's time-ordered operational calculus for non-commuting operators "makes it possible to represent functions of (nonc-ommuting) operators as path integrals, with the integrand being the path-ordered exponential operators, the order of which is controlled by a parameter that varies along the trajectory" (ibid). Finally, the operator expressions must be restored to their natural order or 'disentangled'. The final step is often difficult; it consists roughly of manipulating the operator expressions until their order on the page is consistent with the time ordering" (Jefferies, Spectral Properties, 15). "While Feynman made many original and imaginative contributions to theoretical physics, it may well be that his place in the history of science will be largely based on his approach to renormalizing quantum electrodynamics, and especially on the tools that he invented to accomplish that goal, such as path integrals, the operator calculus, and the famous Feynman diagrams" (Selected Papers, p. 7). The historian of science and physics, S. S. Schweber wrote: Feynman's papers "on the space-time approach (or path integral approach) to nonrelativistic quantum mechanics, on quantum electrodynamics, and on his operator calculus [this paper] must surely be placed near the top of any list of the most seminal and influential papers in theoretical physics during the twentieth century" (Schweber, 502). CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Institute of Physics. 4to. 10.5 x 7.75 inches (262 x 194mm). Bound in original wraps; meticulously rebacked. Very faint library stamp on the front and rear wrap as well as the first page; literally the stamps are very difficult to even see (see scan). Otherwise fine condition in every way.
