Typed Letter Signed by Bruce Long, concerning the William Desmond Taylor murder case, together with the first issue of Long's pamphlet 'Taylorology'.

Letter: 10 January ; Mesa Arizona. Pamphlet: Number 1 Fall 1985 1986 - Letter: 4to, 1 p. Twenty-six lines. Text clear and complete. On aged and worn paper, with a couple of holes, light staining and indentations. Addressed to 'Jon', whose book, with a 'chapter pertaining to the Taylor case' Long 'would like very much to see'. Long encloses the copy of 'Taylorology', of which he writes, 'Despite my intentions, there was only one issue due to very poor response -- only a dozen subscribers.' He boasts that his 'collected material on this case', 'primarily newspaper clippings', 'weighs over 30 lbs., with more information coming in every week'. He mentions the fact that the director King Vidor was 'working on a book for many years', and that his research has 'passed into the hands of Sidney Kirkpatrick, with a book of their material, 'A Cast of Killers', on the verge of publication. He has himself been contacted by Douglas Whitton, 'a Canadian who has been researching the case for 8 years and working on his own book'. They have decided to collaborate, with a book due to appear in 1987. A strip of paper with the letter carries a 'list of a few additional publications which came to my attention after the newsletter was published'. Pamphlet: 4to, 24 pp. Stapled. In fair condition, on lightly-sunned and stained paper, with crease to front cover. Strapline reads 'A Continuing Exploration and Review of the William Desmond Taylor Murder Case'. Printed in double-column. Long describes the 'purpose of Taylorology' as to act as a 'forum' and 'focal point', as well as to 'reprint rare old newspaper material on the case'. The magazine contains an 'Introduction to Taylorology', a seven-page account of Taylor's inquest, sections on 'Wallace Smith', 'Taylor's Words', 'Celebrities' and 'Humor', and a 'Bookshelf'. A cartoon relating to the case, from the Pittsburg Sun, 11 February 1922, is reprinted on a full page, and a diagram of the murder scene, from the Los Angeles Record, 2 February 1922, is also reproduced. Two more printed issues followed this one, and in 1993 the magazine became an online publication. It has garnered praise as an invaluable resource for those interested in the case and the early days of Hollywood. This item is, as Long points out in his letter, scarce, only a dozen individuals having subscribed to the first issue. In the first online issue, Number 4, Long states that he has 'no present plans to reprint' Numbers 1 to 3. No copies on COPAC, and the only copy on WorldCat at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.         The Small Garden of Gloria Stuart

1986 - No. 49 of 50 copies of this artist's book inspired by the movie star Gloria Stuart (1910 -2010). Ms. Stuart was a leading lady in the 1930s and early 1940s, best known then for her roles in "The Invisible Man", and many decades later, after a long retirement from the movies, for her role in "Titanic" in 1997. Ms. Stuart, though, was far from idle during her many years away from acting, and her multifarious productivity away from the camera are every bit as fascinating as her Hollywood career. Besides being a political activist sympathetic to liberal causes throughout her life, Ms. Stuart was active in the decorative arts as a designer and business owner, and she enjoyed considerable success as a primitivist painter as well. Most pertinent to this book, Ms. Stuart became both an ardent gardener and an artisan printer, producing artist's book in which she did virtually everything, including the writing, the designing and the printing. While this book was written and produced by Joseph J. D'Ambrosio, a celebrated California book artist, it is a celebration and homage to Ms. Stuart's achievements, and some of the elements in the book such as the overlay of foliage imagery are a nod to Ms. Stuart's own work. This D'Ambrosio creation impresses with many other clever effects such as its intricate paper cuts of the preliminary pages to conjure up a three dimensional illusion of forest and trees, with the foreground a caryatid of two tree trunks shaped like women's bodies. D'Ambrosio has bestowed on us an object of revelatory beauty, and while the aesthetic is unabashedly modernist, the spirit is traditional artistry and artisanship at its best. The book, which is modest in size, a little over 6 inches tall, is in mint condition, and it is protected with a cloth box that contains a felt repository or well in which the book resides.         Collection of 132 Colin De Land Fine Art and American Fine Arts, Company Exhibition Announcements

(New York: Colin De Land Fine Art and American Fine Arts Company, 1986-2004). Cards range in size from 3 1/2" X 5" cards to 5" X 7" brochures. Uniformly close to fine.. Collection of 132 exhibition announcements from Colin De Land Fine Art and American Fine Arts, Company Gallery. De Land was the art world's enfant terrible in the 1990s, responsible for three commercial spaces in New York that bucked the notion of what a "commercial" gallery should do. His shows rarely opened on time, he never had a consistent stable of artists, and he occasionally showed work by artists who didn't exist. De Land's approach was a direct response to the bull market of the 1980s, and he fostered artists hailed for their strong, but often humorous, institutional critique. This sense of humor permeated his projects, and by the time he relocated to SoHo in 1988, American Fine Arts, Company was a laboratory and refuge for raucous minds. Collection includes announcements for Peter Nagy, John Dogg, Richard Prince, Peter Hopkins, Collins & Milazzo, Vito Acconci, Barbara Gladstone, Joseph Kosuth, Peter Fend, Cady Noland, Peter Nadin, Jeff Koons, Joel Shapiro, Christopher Williams, Frank Stella, Rob Pruitt, Carl Andre, John Waters, Gary Gross, and Mark Flood, among others.

Very near fine in a near fine slipcase (lacking the separate original print, 2 small light spots on spine. ) Winner of the Photography Book of the Year Award, this is a retrospective collection of Bernhard's work, an erotic photography classic and a magnificently produced and very beautiful book. Mitchell, one on photographing the nude, the other a brief biography of Bernhard.       Milano: Jaca Book, 1986. Prima edizione (First edition). ril tela, sovrac, custodia (cloth, DJ, slip-case). Ottimo (Fine). 4to. A cura di Giovanni Chiaramonte. Presentazione di Carlo Bertelli. 110 fotografie in bianco e nero di Gabriele Basilico. Note biografiche e apparato critico. Anne Rice's second book in The Vampire Chronicles follows Lestat through the ages as he conducts his own search for his origins and to find meaning in what has happened to him. Unlike the cruel and dark Lestat we saw in Interview, this book reveals a sympathetic figure with his own blend of morality, romanticism, and bravery. Lestat has been asleep for fifty-five years and awakes entranced with the modern world. He becomes a superstar rock musician and millions of fans fall under his spell. Breaking the vampire code of silence, Lestat reveals himself to the world in the hopes that the world's immortals will rise and join together to solve the mystery of their, and his, existence. 1st edition, 1st printing signed by Anne Rice.         THE FLOOD.

Edinburgh: Polygon, [1986]. - First edition. Signed by the author. Author's first book. Fine in dust jacket. Mary Miller is an outcast, believed by some to have occult powers, and is the mother of a bastard son, Sandy. Years later, Mary finds herself caught up in a faltering affair with a local schoolteacher while Sandy falls in love with a strange homeless girl. As the action moves towards a tense and unexpected climax, both mother and son are forced to come to terms with the past, in the growing knowledge that their small dramas are being played out against a much larger canvas, a drama glimpsed only in symbols and flickering images of decay and regrowth, of fire and water - of the flood.
