The Last Resort: Photographs of New Brighton

Wallasey: Promenade Press, (1986). Faint crease to the top corner, else near fine in photo-illustrated wrappers.. First Edition. Oblong quarto. SIGNED by Martin Parr and dated in 1986, the year of publication. While books signed by Parr are not uncommon, this is the first copy I have seen with a contemporary signature. Text by Ian walker. The photographer's first book in color, and the collection that sets the tone for Parr's work to date, with images that convey the subtle juxtaposition of the humorous, the desperate, the banal, and the offbeat in today's society.

        Eigenhändiger Brief m. U.

Cavendish (Vermont) , 28. II. 1986.

THE THEORY & PRACTICE OF RIVERS

Seattle:: Winn Books,. 1986.. First edition. Number 38 of a stated 350 copies, SIGNED BY HARRISON and the illustrator, RUSSELL CHATHAM. Together with a suite of FIVE 14 x 18" PRINTS SIGNED BY CHATHAM, each marked AP and numbered "31/40," and a colophon indicating the suite was produced specifically to accompany 175 copies of the book. Supposedly 175 of the 350 copies of the book were signed by both Harrison and Chatham and came with the suite of prints by Chatham, and the other 175 were signed only by Harrison and did not include the prints. As so few of the purported 175 suite of prints have shown up on the market, we wonder if there were more than 40 copies of the "proof" and if those are what sometimes appear. (The publisher has indicated in a letter to us that none of the copies were numbered. Yet, this copy is numbered and there are others recorded as such.) The book is near fine and the slipcase is slightly darkened with some soiling and a faint half-moon shadow, presumably a partial glass ring, but still very good or better. The prints and accompanying colophon are fine. .

        La Belle Dame Sans Merci

Wind and Harlot Press, (Shaker Heights, OH) 1986 - 12pp. One of twenty-three copies. Keats's ballad of a knight wooed by a beautiful and wild "faery's child" and then abandoned by her, haggard and pale, on the cold hillside. In a designer binding by Paul Delrue depicting the setting at the poem's beginning and end: the countryside after harvest has ended, a barren and empty landscape with a sloping hill and the silhouettes of birds overhead. A rustic fence borders the pale green, tan, and brown fields, all created using Delrue's signature "Lacunose artwork." In this technique, Delrue covered the boards first with tan goatskin, and then many layers of leather in autumnal hues, some puckered and others flat, were overlapped and alternately sanded down smooth and varnished with PVA to create various effects. The Lacunose panels are set onto the goatskin background intentionally askew, echoing the knight's disorientation, and bordered by blind-stamped circles. The endpapers are grey and violet paper handmade by the artist with flecks of gold and silver. In a handmade-paper chemise and a cloth and handmade paper-covered box with a gusseted pocket for the book. Extremely fine. (3 by 2 1/8; 77x53mm). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The New York Trilogy: City of Glass; Ghosts; The Locked Room

Los Angeles: Sun & Moon Press, 1986. First edition. 3 vols. 8vo. Publisher's blue cloth. A fine set in near fine dust-jackets (with logo printed on spine of all three volumes). First edition. 3 vols. 8vo. Signed copies. The complete New York Trilogy, Paul Auster's classic meta-fictional detective story, signed by Auster in volumes 2 and 3. This was Auster's second work and his signature theme of the search for identity and his brand of American existentialism appear fully formed here. The trilogy is not only set in New York, it uses Manhattan's grid layout as an integral part of the story. It established him as a writer to watch, and indeed Auster has since published another fourteen novels, as well as poetry, memoirs and screenplays.

En attendant Godot. Pièce en deux actes

[Paris]: Les Editions de Minuit, 1986. 134, [2] pp. 12mo. Original printed wrappers, tiny speck on rear wrapper, else fine. With a black cloth box. 134, [2] pp. 12mo. Presentation copy. A lovely association copy to a significant Beckett collaborator in the last years of his life. The presentation reads: "For Rick with love from Sam Sept 88". Waiting for Godot was the play that secured Beckett's lasting fame. No matter that he'd been publishing since the 1920s or was Joyce's amanuensis. This play in which "nothing happens" set him on a course that led to the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969. Rick Cluchey is a playwright, actor and director, who co-founded the San Quentin Drama Workshop in the mid-1950s at San Quentin State Prison while serving a life sentence for robbery and kidnapping. Cluchey and Beckett met in the 1970s (once Clucheys sentence had been commuted) and he toured Europe with his play The Cage. Their relationship was especially productive in the last seven years of Beckett's life. Cluchey served as the assistant director on a production of Godot in Berlin and Beckett later directed him in productions of Krapp's Last Tape and Endgame. It comes as no small surprise that The San Quentin Drama Workshop became Beckett's American theatre of choice. Indeed, Cluchey wrote and performed the play "Rick and Sam" which was a testament to his relationship with Beckett.

        TERMINAL STATUS

[Np: Privately Printed by the Author, nd. but ca. 1986].. [8],176 leaves. Quarto. Photographically reproduced typescript, printed on rectos only. Title- page and two sectional-titles printed at The Tragara Press. Black cloth, lettered in gilt. Fine. One of four copies, privately printed, of George Sims's otherwise unpublished novel, TERMINAL STATUS, a political dystopia set in the year 2055, in a world devastated by nuclear and biological warfare. Inscribed, signed and dated on a preliminary leaf by the author to Alan Anderson of The Tragara Press : "Number two of four copies. For Alan from his friends George and Beryl 10.x.86," and with Anderson's booklabel. There are a few scattered original manuscript corrections in the text. Sims inscribed another copy (#3): "The germinal idea for this book came to me on a coach trip from Alpbach to Munich (in 1975)...Unpublished and probably unpublishable (because of the unforeseen collapse of Communism). I sent a typescript of the book to Graham Greene who liked the book but thought I made the 'Glossary' too long and too complicated. Plenty of action and some excitement, with an attractive heroine and a very nasty villain." HALLIWELL, p.138.

        Literary Correspondence

1986-1987. A collection of letters from Waters, mostly to his literary agent, Joan Daves, as well as related ancillary materials showing Waters at work in the after-market for his writing, with opportunities for later editions and film versions. Waters wrote primarily about the American Southwest, in particular the Native American experience. His father was part Cheyenne. The first typed letter signed is from Waters to his agent, Joan Daves, dated August 24, 1986 and concerns Lesley Ann Warren's interest in optioning the film rights to The Woman at Otowi Crossing and the contract for publication of a hardcover, illustrated edition of The Man Who Killed the Deer. It is stapled to a copy of the contract, with numerous marginal corrections and a retained copy of Daves' reply, agreeing with Waters that the intended publisher (Gibbs Smith) had overreached in the contract. An included exchange between Daves and Gibbs Smith posits a simpler agreement, while a retained carbon shows Daves reaching out to Ohio University Press to confirm they had no claim to hardcover rights. The second typed letter signed is from Waters to Keith Sabin, in Daves' absence, and is dated September 29, 1986 and describes the purchasing history of Flight from Fiesta and the current unwelcome "blitz" he, Waters, is undergoing from Ritz Productions regarding theatrical rights. Waters encloses an initialed copy of the letter he wrote to Ritz Productions redirecting their overtures to Daves upon her return from Europe. Both of these letters are stapled together with retained copies of both Sabin's and Daves' replies, as well as a retained copy of an earlier letter from Sabin to Waters saying they had been approached by Ritz and the initial contact letter from Ritz with an unsigned agreement for Right of First Refusal. Also included is a letter from Fiesta publisher Clark Kimball to Daves recommending the production company. The fourth typed letter signed, from Waters to Daves, dated April 29, 1987, again describes the publishing history of Flight from Fiesta and informs Daves that the publisher, Clark Kimball, has been approached by CBS-Columbia regarding film rights, and he includes Kimball's letter. Attached are the retained copies of letters from Daves to both Waters and Kimball, admonishing all that Kimball has no role in film rights for the title, and a later letter from Kimball acquiesces. The fifth typed letter signed, from Waters to Daves (August 3, 1987), delineates an additional inquiry regarding a film option for Flight from Fiesta and several leads on optioning The Woman at Otowi Crossing should Lesley Ann Warren's option expire. Waters takes Daves to task for not responding to offers already presented, for not keeping him informed, and for being about to depart for Europe leaving him without representation: "I don't like to end our agent-client relationship after so many years, but if the overload of work at this crucial time is too much for you, I don't see any alternative." A copy of a letter to Waters at about this point from Alton Walpole shows one of the interested parties facing obstacles bringing Otowi Crossing to the screen. Also, a letter to Daves from The University of Nevada thanks Daves for sending financials on Ohio University Press's Frank Waters: A Retrospective Anthology (included), but bemoans how infrequent the agent's communiques have become. However, the Daves-Waters agent-client relationship was ongoing in October: in the sixth typed letter signed in this archive, Waters informs Daves of yet another inquiry for Flight from Fiesta and asks her advice about payment on an opportunity he has to write the text for a book of photographs to be published by Arizona Highways (likely Eternal Desert, published in 1990). As mentioned, many of the letters are stapled; most are folded for mailing; in some instances they bear the agency's routing marks or highlighting. The lot as a whole is near fine. No Binding.

London, England: Sotheby's Publications, 1986. This is Volume I only of a three-volume work. Copy no. 70 of a limited edition of 1,500 copies. Technically ex library but with very few of the usual ex library markings: from the library of the Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum. Primary text in English, with ancillary text in Turkish. Printed in England and Japan, bound in Scotland. Handsome oxford blue buckram binding, the front board with a crisp design of a ceramic vase in green, blue and gilt within a gilt rule frame, and with crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the spine. 14.5 x 10.25 inches. Unbumped spine head and tail, with sharp corners. Text block firmly bound in. 376 numbered pages, with 34 stunning color plates, many full-page, and hundreds of monochrome plates, all on heavy-weight semi-glossy stock. Neat ex libris label of the McNay Museum to the front pastedown. Tiny stamp "ASIA" in green ink to the top left corner of the first page of the contents section. Else we can find no other markings to the book, inside or out. An immensely clean copy, and quite tight. Almost certainly unread. The pictorial dust jacket with white lettering on a dark blue background and with a color photo of a celadon piece to the front of the DJ. Near the tail of the DJ spine a white library call label pasted on and also a small red dot above the label, the dot and the top of the call label with a horizontal piece of clear tape laid over. Else a lovely DJ. Housed in a heavy-duty cardboard slipcase covered in oxford blue buckram. The slipcase spine with a white library call label pasted on, else an exceptionally clean slipcase and quite sturdy. A Near Fine copy in a Near Fine DJ in a Near Fine slipcase. This first volume is introduced by a series of essays surveying the background to the Topkapi Saray Museum collection and various aspects of the ceramics themselves. One essay throws new light on how porcelains both entered and left the palace, in what quantities and at what dates. Another essay examines the nature of Ottoman taste in this field, showing how porcelain was regarded at the court, and for what purposes and on what occasions it was used. Further important articles examine in detail the use of Chinese and Arabic marks on the porcelains. A full working bibliography, a concordance and a thorough index also appear in Vol. I. This is followed by a section of color plates and then an illustrated inventory of the celadon wares, ranging from the 13th to the 15th centuries and including Jingdezhen porcelain and Southeast Asian celadons.. First Edition. Decorative Boards. Near Fine/Near Fine. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Limited Edition.
