O Rio de Janeiro. A photographic journal

1986 - (196)pp.

        The Arab Bulletin

Gerrards Cross, Bucks: Archive Editions,, 1986. Bulletin of the Arab Bureau in Cairo, 1916-1919. Including indexes for 1916, 1917 and 1918, and the supplementary notes on the Middle East nos. 1-4, 1919-1920. With a new introduction and explanatory notes. 4 volumes, octavo. Original black crushed morocco-effect paper boards, spines lettered and ruled in gilt, top edges gilt, red and gold endbands. Occasional sketch-maps Corners very lightly bumped, an excellent set. Second edition (O'Brien's "first English edition"), trade issue. A complete facsimile of the Arab Bureau's secret bulletin, first issued in June 1916 with an initial circulation of 26 copies; this edition, prepared by Cambridge librarian and Arabist Robin Bidwell, the first practicably obtainable, with just one complete run of the original bulletin traced in commerce (Sotheby's, New York, 1968). The Arab Bureau was established in the spring of 1916 "to co-ordinate Middle East intelligence and to spread propaganda while countering the effects of hostile propaganda, particularly among Muslim troops" (Bidwell, introduction, p. xxiii). Previously there had been no means of co-operation between the Foreign Office, which oversaw operations in Egypt and Western Arabia, the India Office (Mesopotamia and Eastern Arabia), and the War Office (operating in areas where neither organisation had a particular remit). Lawrence served as the first editor of the bulletin and later became a contributor from the field during the Arab Campaign; other contributors included H. St J. Philby, Ronald Storrs, Gertrude Bell, who served as the Bulletin's Mesopotamia correspondent from Basra, and David Hogarth, whose archaeological expeditions provided cover for the creation of a British intelligence network across the Levant. In a retrospective in the hundredth issue of the bulletin (20 August 1918), Hogarth credited Lawrence with the original suggestion that the Arab Bureau publish a regular summary of its intelligence activities, and summarised the aims of the publication as threefold: "Firstly, it aims at giving reasoned, and as far as possibly definitive, summaries of Intelligence, primarily about the Hejaz and the area of the Area of the Arab Revolt Â… and secondarily about the other Arabic-speaking countries Â… Secondly, it aims at giving authoritative appreciations of political situations and questions in the area with which it can deal at first hand. Thirdly it aims at recording, and so preserving, all fresh historical data concerning Arabs and Arab-speaking lands, and, incidentally, rescuing from oblivion any older facts which may help to explain the actual situation: likewise, any data of geographical or other scientific interest, which may be brought to light by our penetration of the Arab countries during the present war". An indispensable resource for the Middle Eastern theatre in the First World War, and containing "the first published records by Lawrence of the Arab campaign" (O'Brien). There was also a deluxe issue of 25 numbered copies.

New York: Viking Press, 1986. First edition. Thick octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by Stephen King on the half title page, "To Ray- with best wishes, Stephen King 2/14/88." An excellent near fine example with some foxing to the topedge in a fine dust jacket. Having conquered the evil force once, they are summoned together 27 years later when the cycle begins again.       - CONOVER,CHRIS. ORIGINAL ART: FROGGIE WENT A-COURTING [FROG AND MISS MOUSIE IN PARK p. [5]]. Offered here is the full page watercolor used opposite the second page of verse in Conover's Froggie Went A-Courting published by Ferrar Strauss Giroux in 1986. It is the story of a handsome humanized, seafaring frog's wooing of Miss Mousie. An entire world of humanized creatures is created around this traditional song with text retold by Conover. Reviewed by School Library Journal as a 'tour de force.'. This illustration measures 7" wide x 9 1/4", signed. Admiral Frog and Miss Mousie are in a lush manicured garden, gazing at a large statue of Uncle Rat. Two little mice are playing croquet in the background. Charming. Conover has been illustrating children's books since 1974. Her work is noted for rich colors and incredible attention to detail, some of which is executed using a magnifying glass for accuracy. There is plenty to look at but without the overcrowding that hampers so many modern children's books. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

The Birds (Archive of original title card maquettes for the 1963 film)

Universal City, CA: Universal Pictures, 1986. Archive of three title card maquettes hand lettered by Harold Adler for the 1963 film. Also included are two fascinating autograph letters, both elaborately designed and executed in a calligraphic style, from Adler to author, illustrator, and editor Fridolf Johnson relating to Adler's work with Hitchcock. Harold Adler was a calligrapher who created hand lettered titles on over 100 films, worked frequently with Alfred Hitchcock, and was a favorite of legendary title sequence designers Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro. In addition to "The Birds" (1963), his credits include "Comanche!" (1956), "The Man with the Golden Arm" (1955), "The Seven Year Itch" (1955), "Carmen Jones" (1954), "Psycho" (1960), "In the Heat of the Night" (1967), and "Justine" (1969). In 2012, an exhibition of Adler's work was organized by noted typographer and design historian Jill Bell at the American Advertising Federation, Kansas City. In the first letter, dated May 16, 1986, Adler describes, after touching on other topics, meeting Hitchcock and then presenting him with layout ideas for the titles. He then goes into detail regarding his answer to a question about the techniques of artist Eric Gill, stating that Hitchcock "was amazed" by this answer, and after that would "request 'to be sure to bring that nice you[ng] man along" (meaning Adler) whenever he had a job for Adler's firm. The second letter, dated June 10th, 1986, focuses almost exclusively on Adler's work on "The Birds," going into some detail regarding both the creative and technical processes of producing hand lettered titles for films. He also describes Hitchcock as "an unusual person to work with. He was a master at what he did, knew what he wanted [and] smoked the finest cigars." He then concludes the letter with some brief remarks on how his approach to title lettering evolved over the course of his career. The letters themselves are works of art, executed in a variety of inks in Adler's detailed penmanship, with Johnson's name on each in particular receiving full calligraphic treatment. Also included are draft title cards for the film, stylistically similar to each other, but much different from the titles used in the finished film. Two of the cards are marked as "camera ready" in holograph colored pencil, with titles executed in white paint on black board. The third card, photo stat on black paper, which accompanied the June 10th letter, has been annotated by Adler on both the recto and verso, explaining the in more detail the technical process of putting the lettering on film. Overall, a significant collection of material illuminating a little explored aspect of film design, with a direct and significant connection to a seminal work by a director known for personally overseeing all aspects of production. Each letter 19 x 24 inches, single leaf, rectos only. May 16th letter folded twice for mailing, June 10th letter folded three times. Two long diagonal creases to the May 16th letter, else both are Fine. Original mailing envelope for the May 16th letter included. "Camera ready" title cards 22 x 14 inches. Lightly rubbed and about Near Fine. Third card 18 x 4 inches. Near Fine.
