Identification of a Specific Telomere Transferase Activity in Tetrahymena Extracts" in Cell, Vol. 43, No. 2, December 1985 (Part 1) pp. 405-413

MIT Press, Cambridge 1985 - FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF BLACKBURN & GRIEDER'S NOBEL PRIZE WINNING PAPER REPORTING THE DISCOVERY OF THE ENZYME NOW KNOWN AS 'TELOMERASE'. The award of the Nobel Prize recognizes the discovery of a fundamental mechanism in the cell, a discovery that has stimulated the development of new therapeutic strategies. As a side note, this work is cited in Rebecca Skloot's The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.Dr. Carol Greider and Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn played an important roll in solving a significant problem in biology, namely, "how the chromosomes can be copied in a complete way during cell divisions and how they are protected against degradation. The Nobel Laureates have shown that the solution is to be found in the ends of the chromosomes - the telomeres - and in an enzyme that forms them - telomerase" (Nobel Prize Portal). "The long, thread-like DNA molecules that carry our genes are packed into chromosomes, the telomeres being the caps on their ends. Elizabeth Blackburn and Jack Szostak discovered that a unique DNA sequence in the telomeres protects the chromosomes from degradation. Carol Greider and Elizabeth Blackburn identified telomerase, the enzyme that makes telomere DNA. These discoveries explained how the ends of the chromosomes are protected by the telomeres and that they are built by telomerase. "If the telomeres are shortened, cells age. Conversely, if telomerase activity is high, telomere length is maintained, and cellular senescence is delayed. This is the case in cancer cells, which can be considered to have eternal life. Certain inherited diseases, in contrast, are characterized by a defective telomerase, resulting in damaged cells. "Carol Greider, then a graduate student, and her supervisor Blackburn started to investigate if the formation of telomere DNA could be due to an unknown enzyme. On Christmas Day, 1984, Greider discovered signs of enzymatic activity in a cell extract. Greider and Blackburn named the enzyme telomerase, purified it, and showed that it consists of RNA as well as protein. The RNA component turned out to contain the CCCCAA sequence. It serves as the template when the telomere is built, while the protein component is required for the construction work, i.e. the enzymatic activity. Telomerase extends telomere DNA, providing a platform that enables DNA polymerases to copy the entire length of the chromosome without missing the very end portion" (Nobel Prize Portal). Greider and Blackburn (as well as Jack Szostak) were awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize for the discoveries they report in this paper. CONDITION & DETAILS: Cambridge MA: MIT Press. Large 4to. (11 x 8.5 inches; 275 x 213mm). Original printed wraps. Near fine condition inside and out. [Attributes: First Edition]

(WARHOL, ANDY). Warhol, Andy. ANDY WARHOL: AMERICA - SIGNED TWICE BY THE ARTIST. Signed Presentation Copy from the Artist. New York: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1985. First Edition. 4to. Pictorial Wrappers. Artist Monograph. Fine. 224pp, profusely illustrated in b&w. Designed by Barbara Richer. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "From the camera that never leaves his side now comes a love letter, a remembrance, and an astonishing portrait of modern life: "America". Culled from his ten year archive, it is a work of blinding insight, a book of strange beauty and enormous contradictions. Here are the very private world of wealth and celebrity, the young Americans of today with their sexy, muscular bodies, and the street world of America's poorest people. Andy Warhol has achieved enormous popular success and critical acclaim in art, advertising, graphics, films, records, modeling, and magazine publishing. With "America", he reveals to us all over again a country and an artist we thought we knew so well. It is Andy at his funniest and most touching; it is America with all its staggering contradictions; it is an important and beautiful new work from the twentieth century's most American artist". What more can we mere mortals add about Warhol's unsettling fame, physique, and $-obsessed black and white chronicle of post-Bicentennial American life? A most handsome example of the stated Harper & Row paperbound first printing additionally BOLDLY SIGNED "Andy Warhol" vertically on the right margin front cover and on the page facing the table of contents - both in heavy black marker. The Cover signature has faded through the "Warhol" portion, while the interior is bright and strong. Though not stated, we acquired this directly from the photographer James Fee prior to his passing. It was originally purchased from the Rizzoli Bookstore in Soho publication party for "America" on October 30th, 1985 at which Warhol signed copies in this fashion. A copy of the handbill for the event is laid in. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. 0-06-096004-3 Inventory Number: 025401

Bob Dylan: Lyrics, 1962-1985- Includes All of Writings and Drawings.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1985. First edition. Quarto, original glossy illustrated boards. Signed by Bob Dylan on the front free endpaper. This example was signed at the publisher's office for gifts to represenatives of Knopf. It is estimated that only a handful were signed. In fine condition. Dylan's lyrics have incorporated various political, social, philosophical, and literary influences. They defied existing pop music conventions and appealed to the burgeoning counterculture. Initially inspired by the performances of Little Richard, and the songwriting of Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson, and Hank Williams, Dylan has amplified and personalized musical genres. His recording career, spanning 50 years, has explored the traditions in American song--from folk, blues, and country to gospel, rock and roll, and rockabilly to English, Scottish, and Irish folk music, embracing even jazz and the Great American Songbook. Dylan performs with guitar, keyboards, and harmonica. Backed by a changing line-up of musicians, he has toured steadily since the late 1980s on what has been dubbed the Never Ending Tour. His accomplishments as a recording artist and performer have been central to his career, but songwriting is considered his greatest contribution. Dylan has sold more than 100 million records, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He has also received numerous awards including eleven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award. Dylan has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Minnesota Music Hall of Fame, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and Songwriters Hall of Fame. The Pulitzer Prize jury in 2008 awarded him a special citation for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power." In May 2012, Dylan received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama. In 2016 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature.

Béthune, éditions Brandes, 28 mars 1985. - 29 x 20 cm., 40 p., ill. h. t. En ff., chemise imprimée, chemise toile éditeur titrée, étui toilé éditeur. Parfait état. Edition originale. Poster for Warhol/Basquiat Paintings - SIGNED BY BOTH

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Exhibition poster signed by both artists, from the exhibition at Tony Shafrazi Gallery, September/October 1985. Color printed poster depicting Warhol and Basquiat wearing boxing gloves after the photo by Michael Halsband, signed in black by each artist above their portrait. 19 x 12 inches (49 x 31 cm). Folds, a few ink smudges likely from original signing. Nicely and archivally framed in red and yellow.

A very rare dually-signed example of the original exhibition poster from this important gallery show featuring the now-iconic image of Warhol and Basquiat posing as boxers, designed as though advertising a bout. The show displayed the collaborative paintings Warhol and Basquiat worked on from 1984-1985. These works were the culmination of their friendship, one which began awkwardly in the late 70's with the younger artist breathlessly hawking his postcard paintings to his idol. By 1983 through the intercession of Page Powell (Basquiat's lover and Warhol's friend) and Bruno Bischofberger (Warhol's Swiss dealer) the two artists developed a friendship. During this time, Basquiat makes frequent appearances in Warhol's diaries: traveling, exercising, and attending parties together. Eventually, the two began work on the paintings that would constitute the bulk of this exhibition.

It was Bischofberger who arranged for the works to be shown at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York. Shafrazi had once been a graffiti artist himself, achieving his moment of notoriety in 1974 as the man who sprayed the foot-high words Kill Lies All on Picasso's Guernica. But the process was not without conflict. Warhol, whose work ethic was legendary, grew frustrated with Basquiat's erratic appearances and the two worked very little on these paintings at the same time. The show was a financial and critical failure and marked the end of their friendship.

The poster however, remains one of the most poignant and enduring images of the 1980's NY art scene, stylising the artistic partnership into a prize fight, with Warhol and Basquiat standing shoulder to shoulder, wearing boxing gloves and Everlast shorts.

The opening of the exhibition was attended by the poster's consignor and her recollections of the event, including descriptions of the moment both Warhol and Basquiat signed the piece, were documented in the October 1985 issue of the California College of Arts and Crafts newsletter. In the article, the opening is described as packed and that "it was impossible to see the art work, which served more as a backdrop to the theatre of the moment ... the large, mechanically rendered logo-symbology by Warhol was willingly insulted by the wild, gestural hand of Basquiat."
