(BASQUIAT, JEAN-MICHEL) (WARHOL, ANDY). Sharazi, Tony & Bruno Bischofberger. EXHIBITION POSTER FOR WARHOL * BASQUIAT PAINTINGS. New York: Tony Shafrazi & Bruno Bischofberger, 1985. First Edition. Folio. Printed Poster. Exhibition Poster. Very Good. One 19 x 12" sheet printed offset in color recto only, folded in quarters and subsequently flattened. A well-preserved, most presentable mailed and postmarked example of the 1985 true first printing of this exceedingly uncommon item that was folded in quarters and sent as the show's announcement showing moderate handling and soft creases along with some adhesive ghosting from two address labels applied to the verso that have since detached.         LLull-Tàpies

Very rare first edition of the most important book artist directed by Antoni Tàpies. Our copy is enriched with a moving autograph and a pencil drawing of the artist's hand - literally - on which rests the heart, his close friend and biggest French specialist of his work, writer and essayist Georges Raillard.Raymond Lulle, philosopher and Catalan poet of the thirteenth century, considered the first great writer in Catalan, exerted a major influence on the thinking and the work of Antoni Tapies who owned many ancient works of mystical thinker in his library. In 1973 Tàpies decided to undertake the realization of this monumental work he completed in 1985, both a tribute to his compatriot and heir balanced against their common metaphysical explorations. This affinity, beyond the centuries between the modern artist and the medieval writer, gives this work 10 years a special dimension in the work of Tàpies. The Catalan artist has wished to make an artist's book in the full sense therefore to meet this medium of literary thought, exploiting all the modes of expression of the plastic thinking: the line, color, matter, to the relief and the "size" of the sheet. More than a confrontation between text and image, Tàpies creates here a true scriptural and graphic dialogue "clarity ravaged" of his work and the "occult wisdom" written Raymond le Fou, writes Father Gimeferrer, "The convergence of these two worlds - verbal and plastic - will we see their revealing affinity. Dialogue two votes brandishing torches on the threshold of an august and distant silence. "(French Introduction, performed on a double book reprint - followed by an afterword by Miquel Batllori - attached to a copy).         1985 Interpolis Chess Touramnet, Tilburg (Score Sheets)

Tilburg: Interpolis, 1985. 14 (11 3/4" x 8 1/4") original score sheets in Tony Miles's hand. Two of the score sheets were not signed (Dzindzichashvili and Ljubojevic. The Tilburg chess tournament was a series of very strong chess tournaments held in the Tilburg, The Netherlands. It was established in 1977 and ran continuously through 1994 under the sponsorship of Interpolis, an insurance company. Fontys Hogescholen shortly revived the tournament series from 1996 to 1998, when the last edition was played. Since 1994 there is another annual chess tournament taking place in Tilburg, which has the name De Stukkenjagers, the field is generally much weaker than the traditional Tilburg tournament. The 9th Annual Interpolis Chess Tournament held in Tilburg, the Netherlands in 1985 was a category XV event. The eight participants of the double round robin were (in order of ELO): Jan Timman (2640), Viktor Korchnoi (2630), Robert Huebner (2620), Ljubomir Ljubojevic (2615), Lev Polugaevsky (2600), Oleg Romanishin (2590), Roman Dzindzichashvili (2570), and the previous year's winner, Anthony Miles (2560). This year marked the shift in the Interpolis event at Tilburg from a round robin to a double round robin. It was during the third round game against Romanishin that Miles began to suffer extreme back pain. He was forced to take powerful painkillers and lie flat on a massage table during his games in order to participate in the remaining rounds. However, this didn't stop Miles from winning his second title in a row, sharing it this time with Korchnoi and Huebner.

Friede I. [Greetings card with drawing to verso in red ink]

United Nations Children's Fund. New York 1985 - Card sent by Hans Erni and family with a drawing by Erni to the verso with text in holograph. Signed. Published by unicef, reproducing his 1985 work 'Friede I'. The drawing to the verso is typical of Erni's humanist, neo-classical style; a manner reminiscent of that of Jean Cocteau. Sir Herbert Read wrote of Erni that: "The main trend of art in the twentieth century has been anti-vital, in which term we must include the anti-human. There are very good reasons for this trend: it is an expression of the anxiety prevailing in the Western World, a search for some absolute in pure form, in fantasy, in dream or in gesture. [-] Against this trend very few artists in the Western World have been brave enough to protest. Certainly the most talented of those who have refused to despair, who have on the contrary dared to affirm life, who have even greatly dared to cast their joy in the face of destiny, is Hans Erni."         The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales.

New York: Summit Books, 1985. First edition of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed and dated by Oliver Sacks on the front free endpaper. Fine in fine dust jacket. In his most extraordinary book, "one of the great clinical writers of the twentieth century" (The New York Times) recounts the case histories of patients lost in the bizarre, apparently inescapable world of neurological disorders. The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat tells the stories of individuals afflicted with fantastic perceptual and intellectual aberrations: patients who have lost their memories and with them the greater part of their pasts; who are no longer able to recognize people and common objects; who are stricken with violent tics and grimaces or who shout involuntary obscenities; whose limbs have become alien; who have been dismissed as retarded yet are gifted with uncanny artistic or mathematical talents. If inconceivably strange, these brilliant tales remain, in Dr. Sacks's splendid and sympathetic telling, deeply human. They are studies of life struggling against incredible adversity, and they enable us to enter the world of the neurologically impaired, to imagine with our hearts what it must be to live and feel as they do. A great healer, Sacks never loses sight of medicine's ultimate responsibility: "the suffering, afflicted, fighting human subject.

Laid in clamshell box. Signed by artist and poet. Numbered. Kumi Korf, In & Out of Sculptural Books: "I discovered my passion for book arts when creating the collaborative piece 'Silk and Secrecy.' I needed a book structure that could hold both traditional letterset text pages as well as a three-dimensional collage; I was searching for a form that would open and close effortlessly, behave as an ordinary book, but also hold a surprise for the reader. After a few missteps, I found a solution. Since that time, artists' books, and particularly the process of inventing new structures, has been an enduring passion."Cerritos Public Library: "With text by Emoretta Yang, Silk and Secrecy obtains literary histories of silk and its importance in the ancient and modern worlds. The book opens to reveal a cut-out window through which long spools of handmade paper covered with multicolored strands of silk threads can be seen. The piece is the first part of Kumi Korf's Figured Silks series." Sandra Kroupa, Fiberarts Summer 1995: "Kumi Korf and Emoretta Yang's 'Silk and Secrecy' is one of the most significant pieces of the decade, challenging the nature of the book. In Korf's three-dimensional sculptural work, text and image are printed on small Japanese paper scrolls and elaborately wrapped with brightly colored silk thread. Text and image are there, but we cannot see them."
