Friede I. [Greetings card with drawing to verso in red ink]

United Nations Children's Fund. New York 1985 - Card sent by Hans Erni and family with a drawing by Erni to the verso with text in holograph. Signed. Published by unicef, reproducing his 1985 work 'Friede I'. The drawing to the verso is typical of Erni's humanist, neo-classical style; a manner reminiscent of that of Jean Cocteau. Sir Herbert Read wrote of Erni that: "The main trend of art in the twentieth century has been anti-vital, in which term we must include the anti-human. There are very good reasons for this trend: it is an expression of the anxiety prevailing in the Western World, a search for some absolute in pure form, in fantasy, in dream or in gesture. [-] Against this trend very few artists in the Western World have been brave enough to protest. Certainly the most talented of those who have refused to despair, who have on the contrary dared to affirm life, who have even greatly dared to cast their joy in the face of destiny, is Hans Erni."         The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales.

New York: Summit Books, 1985. First edition of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed and dated by Oliver Sacks on the front free endpaper. Fine in fine dust jacket. In his most extraordinary book, "one of the great clinical writers of the twentieth century" (The New York Times) recounts the case histories of patients lost in the bizarre, apparently inescapable world of neurological disorders. The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat tells the stories of individuals afflicted with fantastic perceptual and intellectual aberrations: patients who have lost their memories and with them the greater part of their pasts; who are no longer able to recognize people and common objects; who are stricken with violent tics and grimaces or who shout involuntary obscenities; whose limbs have become alien; who have been dismissed as retarded yet are gifted with uncanny artistic or mathematical talents. If inconceivably strange, these brilliant tales remain, in Dr. Sacks's splendid and sympathetic telling, deeply human. They are studies of life struggling against incredible adversity, and they enable us to enter the world of the neurologically impaired, to imagine with our hearts what it must be to live and feel as they do. A great healer, Sacks never loses sight of medicine's ultimate responsibility: "the suffering, afflicted, fighting human subject.

        Silk and Secrecy

Ithaca, New York: Kumi Korf , 1985. Ithaca, New York:: Kumi Korf ,, 1985.. Edition 20. 15 x 11", 10 pages including free end page. Photo offset, xerography. Materials: Japanese paper, silk thread, museum board, foam core board, book cloth. Back board with inset of silk thread twined around eight scrolls. Cloth covered boards with title on front. Laid in clamshell box. Signed by artist and poet. Numbered. Kumi Korf, In & Out of Sculptural Books: "I discovered my passion for book arts when creating the collaborative piece 'Silk and Secrecy.' I needed a book structure that could hold both traditional letterset text pages as well as a three-dimensional collage; I was searching for a form that would open and close effortlessly, behave as an ordinary book, but also hold a surprise for the reader. After a few missteps, I found a solution. Since that time, artists' books, and particularly the process of inventing new structures, has been an enduring passion."Cerritos Public Library: "With text by Emoretta Yang, Silk and Secrecy obtains literary histories of silk and its importance in the ancient and modern worlds. The book opens to reveal a cut-out window through which long spools of handmade paper covered with multicolored strands of silk threads can be seen. The piece is the first part of Kumi Korf's Figured Silks series." Sandra Kroupa, Fiberarts Summer 1995: "Kumi Korf and Emoretta Yang's 'Silk and Secrecy' is one of the most significant pieces of the decade, challenging the nature of the book. In Korf's three-dimensional sculptural work, text and image are printed on small Japanese paper scrolls and elaborately wrapped with brightly colored silk thread. Text and image are there, but we cannot see them."

        Hamlet.

Rome: Delfino, (1985). Folio. 106pp. According to the colophon, this is one of 1,200 copies. Illustrated with ten color lithographs after drawings by Henry Moore. The editor, Dr. Stanley Wells, notes in the Foreword that this work reveals an "unsuspected spiritual kinship between one of the greatest visual artists of the twentieth century and the enduring genius of Shakespeare," who shared a "mythical quality, shunning literalism," and connected with the collective unconscious in their art. Bound in brick red morocco over thick beveled boards, with a rectangular gilt-metal bas relief by Moore, titled "Hamlet's Dilemma," mounted to the front cover. The book fits into a vertical sculptural stand covered with red suede. Covers lightly sunned along the lines of the stand, else fine. Because only three institutional copies of this monumental work are recorded, and given the paucity of copies in commerce, it is not difficult to conclude that the edition was not completed.

        COTE D'AZUR TRIANGLE.|THE

New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Co. 1985. 12 x 14. cloth of vibrant yellow, with title stamped in blue within a red triangle on front cover, housed in black clamshell box by Charriere. not paginated. Signed, Limited Edition, one of 125 copies only on Rives BFK, all signed by the author and artist, hand set in Janson, lithographs and etchings pulled by the Printmaking Workshop of Bob Blackburn. Bound by Gerard Charriere. In this play by Harry Kondoleon, "A woman, her husband, and her husband's lover go up and down the Riviera only to be disappointed by the Riviera. The dullness of the Cote D'Azur reveals to these Americans the dullness and impossibility of love... they tire of one another and pursue sex partners at random until they are attacked and consumed by sea dragons." Mark Beard's brilliant illustrations of these "two-dimensional and ironic" characters, in their bathing suits and sunglasses, in saturated primary colors and his flat presentation, are overwhelming in their impact of the characters' vapidity. With such illustrations as Greek temple caryatids folding out to reveal the Cote d'Azur and paper doll players, Beard's art inexpressibly moves the viewer to realize the inevitable crush of the dragon of these pitiable self-centered creatures. A brilliant mixture of wit and irony with difficult and innovative printmaking techniques producing prints with highly unusual textures, especially in the final fold out, which has an effect of great richness and mystery.

Jean Genet - Louis Diaz. Photographies Originales

Par l'auteur. A pair of original black and white photographic portraits taken and printed by Marc Trivier. The two photographs are, respectively : - An original photograph of Jean Genet taken in Rabat en 1985, probably one of the last portraits of the writer, who died the 14th of april 1986. - An original photographic portrait of Louis Diaz, committed to psychiatric hospital, taken in Liège in 1984. Artists, strangers, madmen, abbatoirs, trees - Marc Trivier photographed each of his subjects with the same interrogative intensity. Toutes réalisées dans le même format carré, élémentaire and clos, sans retouche ni recadrage, and seem less to show off a subject - famous or unknown, in or out of power, dead or alive - than to seek out a presence. "What interested me was not simply photographing a body or a face, but the curious situation of someone taking a photo of someone else." In placing his portraits of artists side by side with a divergent pair, Trivier denudes the work of its effect and reveals the enigmatic nakedness of the photographic body. "In his cosmogony every thing, every being - vegetable, mineral or human - deserves the same respect. "In his cosmogony every thing, every being - vegetable, mineral or human - deserves the same respect. For all are subject to the same iron law: solitude" (Luc Desbenoit in Télérama, 05/03/2011, on the occasion of Marc Trivier's retrospective at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie).Unsigned silver prints, like most of Trivier's work. Unique proofs printed by the artist.         Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman!"

New York & London: W. W. Norton & Company,, 1985. Adventures of a Curious Character. Octavo. Original red cloth-backed red boards, title to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. A beautiful copy, rarely seen in such excellent condition, in the bright jacket with just a little rubbing to head of spine. First edition, first printing of Feynman's classic volume of memoirs, including humorous and insightful stories from his childhood, education at MIT, work on the Manhattan Project, and his teaching and research career. The title refers to the bafflement of an administrator's wife at MIT when the inexperienced young Feynman requested both lemon and cream in his tea. Other memorable stories include his lock-picking escapades at Los Alamos, his request to see a "map of the cat", and the poignant death of his beloved first wife, Arlene. The New York Times review of this volume describes him as "a storyteller in the tradition of Mark Twain" who "proves once again that it is possible to laugh out loud and scratch your head at the same time" (NYT, January 27, 1985).
