LLull-Tàpies EDITION ORIGINALE Grand papier ENVOI AUTOGRAPHE

Barcelona: Daniel Lelong|& Carles Taché, 1985. Fine. Daniel Lelong & Carles Taché, Barcelona 1985, 36x50cm, en feuilles sous coffret. - The very rare first edition of the most important livre d'artiste executed by Antoni Tàpies. One of 120 numbered copies on vélin d'Arche paper, justified by the artist by hand on the colophon, with 25 original engravings, two signed and justified in pencil by Antoni Tapiès ; the only printing after 45 exemplaires de tête with a monotype. This copy retains its offprint of the text in French. Moving autograph inscription signed by Antoni Tapiès with a pencil drawing from the artist's hand - literally! - on which is superimposed a heart, to his close friend and the greatest expert on his work, the writer and essayist Georges Raillard. Raymond Lull, a 13th century Catalan philosopher and poet, considered the first great Catalan writer, had a major influence on the thinking and work of Antoni Tàpies, who had a number of old and significant works by the mystical thinker in his library. It was in 1973 that Tàpies decided to undertake this monumental work, which he only finished in 1985; it is, at the same time, an homage to a fellow-countryman by a spiritual heir and an examination of their shared metaphysical explorations. This affinity across the centuries between a contemporary artist and a mediaeval writer gives this work - created over 10 years - a particular place within Tàpies' oeuvre. The Catalan artist wanted, in this way, to create a "livre d'artiste" in the fullest sense of the term, starting with the encounter between the book and the object as an aid to literary thinking, by exploiting the full range of expression of the concept of plasticity: line, color, material, and relief, down to the very "size" of the leaves. More than just a juxtaposition of text and image, Tàpies here establishes a true graphic and written dialogue between the "ravaged clarity" of his work and the "occult wisdom" of Mad Raymond, as Pere Gimeferrer notes in his introduction. "The meeting of these two worlds - the verbal and the plastic - will allow us to see their revelatory similarities. It is a dialogue between two voices, torches in the sparse and distant silence."

Leiden, Jan Seversz., 18 August 1517. Folio. With the title-page printed in red and black with a large woodcut between different woodcut borders, and 239 woodcuts in text, including 121 woodcut portraits. Black blind-tooled goatskin (1637), with gold-tooled title and binding date on side.

Adams A2252; J. van Gelder & I.Jost, Jan de Bisschop and his icones and paradigmata (1985), pp. 196-211; Jeudwine, p. 253, and no. 388. First edition of the famous and beautifully illustrated Dutch national chronicle, known as the "Divisiekroniek", because of its publication in 32 devisions. The chronicle contains various narratives of historical, ecclesiastical and hagiographical nature and is profusely and beautifully illustrated with woodcuts of various size and style. Only ten of the woodcuts were specially designed and cut for the "Divisiekroniek": apparently the Leyden printer Jan Severszoon used whatever he happened to have in stock. Some of the woodcuts are ascribed to Lucas van Leyden, Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen and Cornelis Engebrechtsz. Of particular interest is the black goatskin binding with gold-tooling on the front side and the spine. There are 21 other volumes known with similar bindings, all with the date "1637" on the side and a shelf mark on the spine, with a number at the top (here: "102") and a capital letter at the bottom (here: "E"). The highest number so far is "158", the letters run from A to F. Professor Jan van Gelder has shown that the volumes originally belonged to the art-collector Pieter Spiering Silfvercrona (d. 1652), who was responsible for the uniform black leather bindings. With an owner's inscription on the verso side of flyleaf by the Dutch engraver Frans Koerten (1603-1668), and owner's inscription on pastedown by Van Meurs (?), who bought the present copy at the auction of the library of Johannes Enschedé. Very good copy, without the often lacking index of four leaves and only slightly browned. Binding rubbed along the extremities, slightly damaged on spine.

Ad 4: Chadenat 2165; NUC lists 1 copy only; this ed. not in OCLC. Ad 5: Chadenat 4391; this ed. not in OCLC nor in NUC. Nice collection of five very rare accounts of the early mission in southeastern Asia. Ad 1 : Rare third edition of a popular account of an overland voyage from France to the Far East by Jacques de Bourges (ca. 1630-1714), a companion of the French titular bishop of Berytus (Beirut), Lambert de la Motte, on the first expedition to the Far East of the newly erected Société des Mission Etrangères. They left Marseille in June 1660, and travelled via Malta, through the Middle East and India, to Siam (Thailand). After having lived there for a year, Bourges was sent back to France to report in Rome on the conditions for missionising in Siam. Two years later, in 1666, he published the original edition of the present work, based on the diary he had kept during his adventurous voyage. A Dutch translation was published in 1669. Ad 2 : Rare second edition of an account of the voyages and mission activities of the French bishops in the Far East, by François Pallu (1625-1684), the titular bishop of Heliopolis (Baalbek) with jurisdiction over Tongking, Laos and five provinces of southwestern China. He arrived in Ayutthaya, Siam, in 1664, where he met bishop Lambert (see above). Together they decided to take this city as the center for religious propaganda in Southeast Asia, because of its relative safety and atmosphere of tolerance. Pallu went back to Rome in 1665 to explain this decision, while Lambert began to construct the headquarters in Ayutthaya. Pallu was received by Louis XIV several times between 1667 and 1670, and managed to get royal assurances of finacial support for the mission. In 1668 he published the present work, of which the present edition is an abridged version. In 1673 he returned to the Far East where he worked until his death in China, 1684. Ad 3 : Rare second edition of this account, probably written by Luc Fermanel de Favery (Lach & Van der Kley), which brought fresh information about the condition of the mission in different parts of southeastern Asia between 1666 and 1671. The original edition appeared in 1674. It consists of four parts, the first dealing with the mission in Siam and containing descriptions of amongst others Bourbon Island, Madagascar, and Mozambique, the second treating the situation in Cochin-China, the third the mission in Cambodia, and the fourth being devoted to Tongking, including an account of the work of bishop Lambert (see above). Ad 4 : Very rare second edition of this work relating to the voyages and work of important missionaries in southeastern Asia between 1672 and 1675, thus being a sequel to the previous work. It includes information about bichop Lambert (see above), Chevreuil, Guiart, Vachet, Leroux, and Paumard. The original edition appeared in 1680. Ad 5 : Extremely rare second edition of this account on the mission in the Far East in 1666 and 1667, and can be regarded a sequel to the previous work. It originally appeared in 1680.Good copy with contemp. ownership's entry written on title 'Ex libris Hérisson'.

[Vol. III]: “Captain James Cook's three voyages of exploration to the Pacific between 1768 and 1780 were the first of the great European voyages of discovery to carry professional artists. The Art of Captain Cook's Voyages contains all the known drawings and paintings done for these voyages as well as a fascinating narrative and explanatory text by Bernard Smith and Rudiger Joppien. ¶ Volume III, describing Cook's final voyages, is of particular interest for its descriptions of the Pacific Northwest of America as well as Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands.” – YUP. ¶ Reviews: “The Joppien and Smith series, already hailed by reviewers of the first two volumes, is in turn a model for how to present scholarly explorations through visual communication. . . . In the spirit of Captain Cook the authors not only have compiled a resource for scholars, they have made it 'entertaining to the generality of readers.'” — David W. Plath, New York Times Book Review. ¶ "The two compilers of this massive collection are to be commended for the exhaustive task they have accomplished."—Dennis Puleston, New Scientist.
